What if your fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalances, and brain fog all traced back to a silent disease that affects 1 in 3 people—and you didn't even know you had it? In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Yousef Elyaman to talk about a condition that's quietly becoming one of the biggest threats to our health: fatty liver disease—now renamed Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). It's not just a liver issue. It's deeply connected to heart disease, cancer, infertility, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and even hormone dysfunction. The most alarming part is it's often missed in traditional medicine because there's no easy drug to prescribe. We break down: The real root causes—from sugar and starch overload to gut imbalances, toxins, alcohol, and chronic inflammation The surprising early warning signs your body might be giving you Why standard labs often miss it, and the tests you actually need The step-by-step functional medicine approach to reverse fatty liver naturally—using targeted nutrition, lifestyle upgrades, and proven supplements I also share the latest science on inflammation, why it's the common thread between fatty liver and nearly every chronic disease, and how to calm it down at the root. This is the episode I wish every patient (and doctor) could hear—because fatty liver is reversible when you catch it early, and the ripple effects of healing it are massive. If you care about your energy, hormones, brain health, or longevity… this one's for you. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox.Stress is almost synonymous with our modern lifestyles. We experience external stressors from our jobs, family responsibilities, financial worries, and many other places, then compound them with unhealthy lifestyle choices. The result is an epidemic of stress and increased risk for chronic diseases. In this episode, I talk to Wim Hof, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham about how to take control of our minds and bodies through cold therapy, breathwork, and mindset and meditation techniques that can help us tap into our innate inner power.Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold, include climbing Mount Everest in nothing but a pair of shorts, running across the Namibian desert at 104°F without drinking any water, and sitting in an ice bath for 1 hour and 52 minutes. He has proven in eight university research studies that he can consciously influence his autonomic nervous system, measurably reduce inflammation, regulate his internal pH levels and body temperature, and activate his immune system to resist the effects of poisonous endotoxins. These studies also show that Wim is able to teach others to achieve similar accomplishments in as little as four days through the Wim Hof Method.Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. Blood Clots: A Functional Medicine Approach | This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and ButcherBoxBlood clots are a fairly prevalent issue that can become very serious if not treated promptly. They can occur as a result of injury to the lining of the blood vessels or lack of mobility for an extended period of time. And while the traditional approach to treatment is using a blood thinner or aspirin, Functional Medicine focuses on the prevention of blood clots as well as treatment options, which may include healing the gut, reducing inflammation, and supporting genetics. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses this topic with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. They explore how health conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disease, metabolic syndrome—and even certain genetics—may increase the risk of blood clotting. How To Master Hunger And Cravings | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic GreensSo many of my patients tell me they feel their food cravings have gotten out of control and a lack of willpower is driving their weight gain, generally making them feel like crap. But, the truth is, this is not a matter of willpower. Our industrial food industry produces food-like substances specifically made to hook our taste buds with every bite, hijacking our brain chemistry and metabolism, and giving rise to disease. Our bodies actually have a finely-tuned appetite control system that is governed by certain hormones. However, our modern diet, elevated stress, and inadequate sleep impairs this system, leading us to crave the wrong foods and feel hungry all the time. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses our natural hunger regulator, ghrelin, with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. They talk about how this hormone works and what can interrupt its natural production. They also discuss strategies to help the body regulate hunger naturally.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. How to Quit Eating Ultra-Processed Foods | This episode is brought to you by EvenThe SAD (Standard American Diet) is over 60 percent ultra-processed food mostly from commodity crops—wheat, corn, and soy turned into hundreds of thousands of food-like products that bear little resemblance to our evolutionary diet. These addictive, nutrient-depleted foods not only make us obese and sick but drive us to consume more and more “food-like substances,” looking for the missing nutrients. Yet, a desire for real food is a fundamental part of our basic biological blueprint. Given the chance, our taste receptors will naturally gravitate toward the inherent goodness found in real, whole foods. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dave Asprey, Fred Provenza, and Dr. Assem Malhotra about how our taste buds, hormones, and brain chemistry have been hijacked by the food industry. They discuss how ultra-processed foods are leading us to be overfed, yet undernourished and how we can reclaim our nutritional wisdom by eliminating ultra-processed foods from our diet.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Is Dairy Good For Us? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBoxWe have no biological requirement for dairy, and yet, we've been told over and over again that this food is a great source of calcium and that milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. However, the research shows that none of this is true. In fact, close to 70 percent of the world's population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products—a problem known as lactose intolerance. But even if you aren't lactose intolerant, consuming dairy can lead to weight gain, bloating, acne, gas, allergies, eczema, brittle bones, and sometimes even cancer. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why he often works with patients to eliminate dairy in conversations with his colleagues Lisa Dreher and Dr. Elizabeth Boham. He also speaks with Dr. David Ludwig about his recent research on milk and dairy products.Lisa Dreher is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. How Sleep Apnea Drives Weight Gain, Memory Loss, High Blood Pressure, ADHD, And More | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBoxSleep is a major cornerstone for an energetic, joyful, healthy life. Unfortunately, millions of people are affected by a condition called sleep apnea and an estimated 80% of cases go undiagnosed. Sleep apnea is an extreme form of sleep deprivation where you wake up several times throughout the night. You can't sleep, you can't breathe, and as a result, you lack oxygen. You don't even realize you're waking up throughout the night. This lack of sleep drives weight gain and blood sugar imbalances. It can also raise your risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and more.In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center, Dr. George Papanicolaou, Dr. Elizabeth Boham, and Maggie Ward, about patients they have treated for sleep apnea. They share cases on issues ranging from anxiety to low libido to high blood pressure in which sleep apnea was a contributing factor.George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Underweight, Overtired, And Malnourished: How To Get Your Health Back On Track | This episode is sponsored by Tushy and Cozy EarthThe sad reality is that Americans suffer from massive nutritional deficiencies and our food is primarily to blame. These nutrient deficiencies are showing up in underweight and overweight people alike. Aside from a reduction in nutrient density in our food, we don't eat enough whole, unprocessed foods and instead have diets rich in refined sugars and starches. And even when we are eating the right foods, our bodies sometimes have trouble digesting and absorbing the necessary nutrients from those foods. Simply put, low nutritional status equals a poorly functioning metabolism. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the issue of malnutrition and what that means for our overall health. They dive into how they diagnose and treat the most prevalent nutrient and vitamin deficiencies and Dr. Boham shares cases of patients she has treated who have difficulty putting on and maintaining weight.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. Is Lactose Intolerance Causing Your Gut Issues? | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and PaleovalleyMost of us grew up hearing that dairy, and especially milk, is crucial for good health. In reality, dairy isn't the vital source of calcium and strong bones that we were led to believe. Dairy can cause digestive problems for the majority of people with lactose intolerance, along with a range of other symptoms in people with and without lactose intolerance. These symptoms can include sinus issues, skin issues, headaches, autoimmune issues, and more. So how do you know if the lactose in dairy, or dairy overall, is a problem for you?In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss lactose intolerance and the myriad of ways dairy can cause digestive problems, and more. They also share how they work with patients to determine how dairy is being tolerated, and if it is the cause of other underlying health issues.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. This week on The #FitwithFallon #Podcast hosted by Fallon Mercedes Brock, Fallon speaks with Dr. Elizabth Boham about #BreastCancer #Prevention. You may have seen her passionately spreading her knowledge about prevention on the Dr. Oz show, but she has good reasoning too. Right now breast cancer and other estrogen-related carcinomas are on the rise. Every two minutes a woman is diagnosed, and every 1 in 8 females will be diagnosed in their lifetime. Alarming numbers show that even younger women are now starting to get breast cancer. Currently, there are 260,000 women in their thirties and twenties who have it. If we have the most advanced medical technology in the world, why is breast cancer continuing to increase at a rapid rate and at an even younger age in the United States? Dr. Boham dives deep into the data that has led her to believe why the incidence of breast cancer continues to rise. As a #BreastCancerSurvivor herself, she reveals a shocking story of finding a lump while practicing a breast exam on herself during residency, turning out to be triple-negative breast cancer. After combining her traditional western medical training, and the functional medicine approach she learned to help beat her cancer, she is now giving patients the tools to give them a fighting chance at beating theirs.
