Those who listen and obey can take comfort in the promises of God, but those who disregard and disobey should heed the warnings of God. Dr. Alan Kurschner answers this question of whether the seals in the book of Revelation express God's future eschatological wrath. First Four Horsemen Seals He began with the first four seals showing that these are natural events in contrast to the supernatural judgment elements in the trumpets and bowls. The first four seals will purify the church before Christ returns. He also responded to the pretrib ignorant claim that "God would never bring tribulation to the church"; for example,  noted is 1 Peter 4:17: "For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?" Fifth Seal The fifth seal is deeply problematic for pretribulationism. It was demonstrated that the fifth seal thoroughly refutes the pretrib notion that the seals are the day of the Lord's wrath. The fifth seal depicts martyrs, showing that they rightly recognize the day of the Lord's wrath has not come. In 1 Thessalonians 5:9, we have a promise from God that no believers will experience the day of the Lord's wrath. Pretribs would have God breaking his promise by claiming that the fifth seal is God's wrath. Sixth Seal Dr. Kurschner explained that the sixth seal is also problematic for pretribulationists because the depiction of the wicked conveys that the wrath of God is impending, not that it has already started in the past. In addition, Joel 2:30–31 explicitly states that the celestial disturbances happen before the day of the Lord. He also noted Luke 21:25–28 and Matthew 24:29–30 which corroborates that the day of the Lord happens after the great tribulation. Seventh Seal Finally, it was explained that the two groups of people being delivered between the opening of the sixth and seventh seal demonstrates that the day of the Lord's wrath has not happened because they are being protected before God pours out his wrath with the opening of the seventh seal containing the trumpet and bowl judgments.  There is a progression in the final seals: the fifth seal promises wrath, the sixth seal portends wrath, an interlude in Revelation 7 protects from wrath, and the seventh seal pronounces wrath. It is wrong to claim that because Jesus opens the seals himself, the seals, therefore, contain God's wrath. Instead, it means that he is sovereignly orchestrating eschatological history—for the ungodly and the godly. The seals function as conditions that must be first met before the scroll is opened. The overarching question in the book of Revelation is: will you be an overcomer?

In a profound vision, the Apostle John, finds himself on the island of Patmos due to his commitment to spreading God's word. On this island, he hears a heavenly voice instructing him to document what he sees and send it to the seven churches across different cities. God's Revelation: God has chosen to disclose His divine plans to humanity, ensuring they understand His intentions for the future. The True Image of Jesus: John witnesses an awe-inspiring figure amidst seven golden lampstands, described with vivid imagery – hair as white as snow, eyes resembling fiery flames, and a voice like roaring waters. This figure is Jesus, revealing Himself in His majesty. Crucially, His first focus is on the churches, emphasizing their significant role. Surrendering to King Jesus: John's initial response to this revelation is one of terror, mirroring Isaiah's reaction. This encounter underscores the powerful and real presence of Jesus. With His claim of holding the keys to Death and Hades, Jesus emphasizes His dominion over life, death, and afterlife. Recognizing Him in His true glory induces a natural reaction of reverence and submission. Judgment and Accountability: Jesus further elucidates the vision, pointing out that the seven stars and lampstands symbolize the angels and the churches respectively. He then addresses the churches directly. Jesus acknowledges their deeds but admonishes one church for tolerating a false prophetess, Jezebel. Those swayed by her teachings are warned of impending punishments unless they repent. Message for the Faithful: For those who have resisted such temptations, Jesus offers words of encouragement. He asks them to remain steadfast in their faith. Those who persevere and uphold His teachings will be rewarded with power and authority, much like Jesus received from His Father. The overarching message is clear: Jesus is vigilant, watching over the churches, rewarding those true to Him, and calling out deviations from His path.

Emotionally react Bring it to the Word of God The wrath of God Romans 1:18-20  //  The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. God's wrath is a part of His character. You cannot put God's characteristics into human understanding. Human Wrath: Emotional response that is irrational, uncontrolled, and cruel. God's Wrath: Righteous opposition to evil and those who choose it. The opposite of wrath is not love, it is neutrality. How do we better understand God? Speculation - Us guessing who God is. Revelation - God revealing who He is. General Revelation - Common and available to all people Special Revelation - Available to all some The number one attribute of God mentioned in Scripture is His holiness. Romans 1 - Passive Romans 2 - Active Romans 2:5  //  But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. Romans 1:21-25  //  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Two most important questions you'll ever need to answer: Who is God? Who am I? Love and wrath were shown at the cross. Romans 2:1, 5-6  //  You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. Romans 3:23-25  //  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished

Similarly, in ch. 5 John hears of a conquering lion from the seed of David who will conquer his enemies and open the scroll, but when he looks he sees a bloody lamb. What can we learn from these two pictures? Was John surprised at the difference between what he saw and what he heard? The world is described as going dark, losing one third of it's population, water turning to blood, and many other overwhelming events. Each of the three sevens ends in the same way, the kingdom of heaven collides with earth and God's victory begins. As a church that received this letter, these terrifying events would have sprung up hope for their future. God is ultimately victorious and his power is shown in the midst of hardship. God also wants to reveal his victory to us today. We often think the book of Revelation is just about the end of the world. But, before any vision of future events occurs, John is first given a list of encouragements and warnings for each of the churches that he is writing to. These warnings include returning to their first love, removing false teaching, idolatry, and more. Why would a book about future events start with issues that are happening currently? Maybe God's first priority isn't the next steps, but the heart of his people right now. In a culture of busyness and progress, it can be so easy to be consumed with our next actions steps. Have you ever been praying for one thing but only hearing about something else? The reality is God wants to address our hearts and the things He sees as most important before getting to the details that we tend to focus on.
