In this second and concluding part on the Causes of the Wars of the Roses, Henry VI fails in his kingly duties, and rival factions were gain strength across England. Two houses had emerged: The House of Lancaster with Henry at its head, and the House of York with Richard Duke of York the main man. The Yorkists were joined by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and known as the kingmaker, though my guests today are sceptical as to his political achievements. Derek Birks and David Pilling return and we discuss the two houses, the rise of York and the faltering Lancasters, and the Kingmaker himself as momentum builds to the street fight that was the Battle of St. Albans in 1455. What starts off as an episode about The Percy Family, turns into a deep dive on Wressle Castle and it's ownership!  Some say this conflict over Wressle Castle starts the feud between the families Percy & Neville; which in turn may have given the Wars of the Roses a big old push in the fight direction.  This episode is ram packed with interesting tidbits listener! Why it has contract law, local and not so local caretakers, and many familiar characters from History.  Why there's Henry Percy (you can call him Harry Hotspur), his son Henry Percy, and who can forget Henry Percy's son, Henry Percy?   You'll laugh with Henry VI, cry with Richard Duke of York, and be slightly weirded out by the Kingmaker himself, Richard Neville Earl of Warwick. The recent Channel Four documentary, The Princes in the Tower: The New Evidence saw historian Philippa Langley and TV personality Judge Rinder examine documents which they believe prove Edward V and Richard Duke of York were not murdered by their uncle Richard III, but were in fact spirited away to mainland Europe. From there they plotted both their return and the overthrow of Henry VII, victor over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Joining today me in the first of a new series of bonus episodes is Jackson van Uden, the host of the History with Jackson podcast. Jackson chats about this evidence, as well as past episodes on his pod, and then we both talk about what to expect in 2024. So, there were those two boys in the Tower of London, Edward V,  King of England, who was 12, and Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, who was 9, and they disappeared one summer after their uncle Richard declared them illegitimate and became King Richard III.  And it was a total mystery as to what happened to them, and still is, and Richard III was not king for very long before Henry Tudor, who was on one side descended from Tudur ap Gronwy Fychan, which made the English no never mind, but on the other side descended from King Edward III, and so was a claimant to the throne of England by blood if you squinted your eyes and looked sideways, was a very good claimant to the throne on account of winning the Battle of Bosworth, after which King Richard was buried under a future car park. Henry was king, then, and there weren't any more men left from the family of Richard III and Edward IV,  because the princes in the  tower had disappeared and everybody, including us, thought they were dead. But maybe they weren't !  Maybe they got away! They maybe escaped the Tower and went to Flanders! And that kind of imagining allowed for Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, both of whom, four years apart, claimed to be either Edward V, or Richard Duke of York, or even their cousin George.  Both of them became the center of rebellions. Both of them lost the fight for the crown. One was allowed to be a castle worker and the other was kept at court until he misbehaved once too often and got executed. So we explain all that. And Anne explains all of the pretenders to the English throne.  And what is Michelle's rabbit hole, this episode? The ACTUAL BED that was made for the wedding of Henry and Elizabeth. No, really. She got a book about it and it's her favorite part of this whole hoopla.

For Round Two, we’re jumping right into the middle of an epic battle: York versus Lancaster. The Question is which King DESERVED to win the Wars of the Roses: Henry VI of the House of Lancaster or Edward IV of the House of York. Both men were the son of a warrior, both men sat on the throne, both men won the crown in battle. So which King, Henry or Edward, do you think deserved to be the ultimate winner of the Wars of the Roses?Henry VI was the son of one of the greatest kings in English history: Henry V. Son of that great warriors, Henry VI was the first King of England to inherit the French throne! King of France and England, all before turning a year old. And there’s the problem. The early years of Henry VI’s reign were also the early years of his life! When Henry V realized he was dying, he made provisions for his baby son’s reign with his brothers sharing responsibility. So young Henry VI was surrounded by relatives with their individual personalities and competing agendas. The York family were descendants of King Edward III, just like Henry VI was. Richard, Duke of York, was a loyal servant of the King who wanted a more important job. The king needed someone to establish order in France following the death of the Duke of Bedford. He appointed the Duke of York lieutenant-general of France. This was York’s big break, so he headed off to France. The King’s court fell apart in 1453. Summer brought disaster in France. The English army was destroyed by a French force. This represented a lasting defeat for the English. Henry VI was devastated and, possibly as a result, fell into an illness that left him unable to speak, recognize those around him, or comprehend where he was. He couldn’t eat or walk. It was as if he retreated from life. The next March, the Duke of York was elected as protector and defender of the realm. It was agreed that he would act until the king recovered. The king recovered as suddenly as he had become ill. His physical strength was restored. He was able to move around unassisted. He was able to communicate. He recognized those around him. He was delighted to see his wife and meet his newborn son. All those around him reportedly wept with joy.York did not weep with joy. He was thrown out of government and responded by raising an army and eventually fighting for the crown. After a series of battles, Richard Duke of York was killed at Wakefield in 1460. But his son Edward took up the fight and, a year later, was proclaimed King Edward IV.The fighting continued. After Yorkist forces defeated the Lancastrians, the Lancastrians regrouped. They were significantly helped by the addition of the "Kingmaker,"who had supported York but switched sides and restored Henry VI to the throne in 1470. But York assembled a new army and fought back, taking the throne once more in 1471. This time Edward IV made sure Henry VI and his main supporters were dead or immobilized, and he reigned for a dozen years.So...was it ok for the Dukes of York to come out in open rebellion against the King? Was it OK for Edward IV to take the throne (twice) from an anointed King?Who deserved to win the Wars of the Roses?

The so-called “Wars of the Roses” is one of the most fascinating periods of English history. There is the uber-king, Henry V, vanquishing the enemy in France and inspiring his troops (and Shakespeare!) to a stunning victory at Agincourt. There’s his son, the under-king, Henry VI. Crowed as a child, Henry VI never came anywhere near the ease or effectiveness on the throne his father had. There are the York brothers, Edward, George, and Richard. All sons of Richard Duke of York, the three brothers displayed a level of ambition and ruthlessness that led to of them to the crown of England. And there are some Beauforts and Nevillles and Tudors lurking about as well.I can tell you right now that one of my very, very favorite things about this time period is the women!!They weren’t all dressed in armor and riding into battle like Joan of Arc, but the English women involved in the Wars of the Roses were fierce, fearless, and fantastic. They were queens, and almost-queens, and duchesses, and all-around fighters. They were also mothers and daughters and sisters who had a level of access to the of course male leaders of the time. These women broke the rules—and I mean BROKE the rules—and made new ones. Working from the inside, they changed everything. There are some terrific books about these women, and I’d like to share three with you:**She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth by Helen Castor.**Blood Sisters: The Women Behind the Wars of the Roses by Sarah Gristwood.**Uncrowned Queen: The Fateful Life of Margaret Beaufort, Tudor Matriarch by Nicola Tallis.

Ruthlessness and Richard III: Thomas Penn (1483) In this haunting episode of Travels Through Time, Thomas Penn guides us back to the blackest year of them all, 1483. Richard Duke of Gloucester, has seized power. His rivals, the Woodville faction, have fled for their lives. And the uncrowned child Edward V has disappeared into the Tower of London, along with his younger brother. The two would never be seen again. This was the year that Richard Duke of Gloucester conceived a ruthless plan to seize the throne for himself. His actions would make his reputation for cunning, opportunism and recklessness. In retrospect, Penn argues, this was the year that the powerful House of York began to consume itself. The ‘Wars of the Roses’ saw the House of York ranged against their rivals in the House of Lancaster. The complex, long-running conflict played out in a succession of battles, betrayals and beheadings. It was a time when, as the historian Thomas Penn puts it, ‘necessity knew no law.’ So begins the final tragic act in the story of the House of York. ---  Show notes: Scene One: Northampton, the night of April 29/30, Richard and Buckingham’s plot Scene Two: Council chamber, Tower of London, morning of Friday 13 June, Richard’s accusation/Hastings’ execution Scene Three: Lincoln, Sunday 12 October, Richard’s response to news of Buckingham’s rebellion Memento: Edward IV’s will. --- People / Social Presenter: Peter Moore Guest: Thomas Penn Producer: Maria Nolan Editorial: Paul Lay / Artemis Irvine Digital Production: John Hillman Titles: Jon O.

That’s a lot of movie talk, so let’s get started. Here. We. Go. Universal Studios Classic: “Tower of London” (1939) In the 15th century Richard Duke of Gloucester, aided by his club-footed executioner Mord, eliminates those ahead of him in succession to the throne, then occupied by his brother King Edward IV of England. As each murder is accomplished he takes particular delight in removing small figurines, each resembling one of the successors, from a throne-room dollhouse, until he alone remains. After the death of Edward he becomes Richard III, King of England, and need only defeat the exiled Henry Tudor to retain power. There's currently about 8,000 tonnes of space debris orbiting planet earth and there are a number of reasons why this is a problem that needs to be dealt with swiftly. I spoke to Richard Duke of the Surrey Space centre who landed in the international news headlines last months with their REMOVE DEBRIS satellite and its space harpoon and net. Richard tells us about the satellite's development with Airbus and how Elon Musk and the ISS astronauts helped get the satellite into orbit for it's groundbreaking first in-orbit test. This podcast is brought to you by my own book DARK: The A to Z Of Astronomy & The Cosmos - it's part Universe A-Z explainer and part beautiful coffee table fodder. It's with crowdfunding publisher UNBOUND so every single pledge makes a massive difference in seeing this book get made. All pledges get your name in the book itself but there's lots of different pledge levels including bespoke artwork / limited edition art from the book and lots more. The name Edward V is unfamiliar to most, but the fate of the Princes in the Tower (Edward and his brother, Richard) is one of the most famous and mysterious issues in English royal history. The 12 year-old king came to the throne in 1483 but never received his coronation, instead being usurped by his uncle Richard Duke of Gloucester (soon to become Richard III). As a reign there's not much to review, but this week Rex Factor goes all whodunit and investigates who was responsible for the murder of the princes or if, indeed, they escaped their fate. Remember to check out our who's who guide to the episode if you lose track of who everybody is: http://rexfactor.podbean.com/whos-who-edward-v-princes-in-the-tower/

Henry V's untimely death in 1422 leaves a baby on the throne in the form of Henry VI and marks a total reversal in English fortunes. Disasters in France at the hands of Joan of Arc are eclipsed by the Wars of the Roses, with the Yorkist forces of Richard Duke of York and Warwick the Kingmaker facing off against the Lancastrians led by Margaret of Anjou and the Beaufort family. This is a dramatic period of numerous battles and the deaths of the most high profile figures in the land and amidst this chaos is a man clearly not well suited to the role of king and who proves to be one of the least capable monarchs in English history.
