National parks are home to many iconic trees. Bristlecones pines, Whitebark pines, Sequoias, even mangroves. And, of course, redwoods. These trees hold many stories. The size alone of redwoods and sequoias are enough to hold your attention. But there are backstories, as well. In the case of redwoods along the Northern California coast, the backstory can be heart breaking. There are chapters of logging fever, of course, as well as of political machinations, and stories of loss. Greg King presents the stories swirling around Redwoods in his book, The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods. One particularly interesting chapter for national park lovers is that Newton B. Drury, the 4th director of the National Park Service, actually worked against the creation of Redwood National Park.

Former Fort Meade City Manager Jan Bagnall declined to be interviewed for the second part of our interview series after receiving multiple threats since our first interview aired on December 13th, or Episode 29. On New Year's Day, I received an email from a stranger named Greg King. I would later learn that he was the campaign manager for Jaret Williams, who one his Fort Meade commission race in November. I was unsure how to proceed and a little concerned based on some of the things Bagnall had shared. However, I was uncomfortable putting just one-side of the story out there without giving the "other side" equal time to make their case. So, I decided to respond to King's inquiry and we discussed the situation in Fort Meade on the phone. I recorded the call and feature it in this episode of the podcast. We also discussed the impending arrival of Pat Oman, the incoming city manager who was recently hired by the governing body without he input and consideration of Mr. Williams. In this episode, Jeff and Greg discuss: The evolution of FactSet and how it is still assisting financial advisors. Changing technology and AI in the financial advising industry. Techstack choices, flexibility, and integration. How to become a best-in-class advisor from a tech perspective. Key Takeaways: Ask “Will this product help our clients solve a problem in their daily lives?” If you can answer yes to that question, looking into the product as an investment or service add for your firm could be worth it. Focus on your client experience and you can't go wrong. As your firm grows, you will need different things for your clients and advisors. Looking for tech that will integrate with each other can help you scale more easily and effectively. Use the client feedback as a guide for how you're going to evolve your tech stack in the future. "Focus on the end client, that should give you the answers they need about where you're headed. Concentrate on what they're telling you about how they're using services in the industry, and really use that client feedback as a guide toward how you build your technology stack." — Greg King Connect with Greg King: Website: https://insight.factset.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/greg-king-b650b33/ Connect with Jeffrey Concepcion: Website: https://www.stratoswealthpartners.comContact: https://www.stratoswealthpartners.com/contactTwitter: https://twitter.com/Stratos_WealthFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/stratoswealthpartnersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffconcepcion1/

Redwood stave pipes were fundamental to the industrialization of American society This episode of Terra Verde features an interview with Greg King, the author of the recently published book The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals and Real Estate in the California Redwoods. The book explores the economic and ideological webs of control over our industrialized society — and how the raw resource of the ancient redwoods provided fundamental industrial products dedicated to the establishment of economic empire. The post Economic Empire and the Raw Resource of the California Redwoods appeared first on KPFA.
The forest is disappearing—it's becoming a ghost—and along with its entire ecosystems. This is not something distant from us; it is us—the power of a tree is the air we breathe. Two and a half billion years ago enough oxygen had built up on earth to support multicellular life, and the first trees evolved about 400,000,000 years ago. The first primates appeared fifty-five million years ago, living in trees in the rain forests. In the past 10,000 years, the earth lost one-third of its forest—almost all of it in the last few hundred years. And the recent loss is caused, not by ice and fire and ice or earthquakes and volcanoes, but by the deliberate acts of human beings. We're talking in his Arcata home with an extraordinary writer/activist named Greg King, author most recently of The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods.

Every year millions of tourists from around the world come to California to see our famous redwoods. Yet few understand how unlikely it is that these last groves of giant trees still stand at all. Activist Greg King examines how investors and a growing U.S. economy drove the timber industry to cut down the giant redwoods on all but four percent of the original 2-million-acre redwood ecosystem. The land grab began in 1849, when a “green gold rush” of migrants came to exploit the legendary redwoods that grew along the Russian River. Several generations later, in 1987, Greg King discovered and named Headwaters Forest—at 3,000 acres the largest ancient redwood habitat remaining outside of parks—and then led the movement to save this grove. After a decade of one of the most dramatic and violent environmental campaigns in U.S. history, the state and federal governments finally protected Headwaters Forest in 1999. The Ghost Forest explores the mystery of what it was about this unique Northern California forest that was both so spectacular and yet so enticing as fuel for economic growth that it inspired a life-and-death struggle. Few but loggers and surveyors ever saw such magnificent trees, ancient sentinels that, like ghosts, have informed Greg King's understanding of the world, and have inspired him to tell the story of their discovery and their exploitation, and to protect them against those determined to cut them down. Greg King has dedicated his life to the appreciation and protection of California's majestic redwoods. Sadly, only 4% of the original 2 million acres of redwood ecosystem remains intact. Witnessing the devastation first-hand in the 1980s was a life-changing experience for King. In 1987, he discovered and named the Headwaters Forest in Humboldt County, the largest remaining ancient redwood habitat outside of parks. This sparked a decade-long struggle that led to its protection by state and federal governments. In his new book, "The Ghost Forest," he tells the story of the exploitation of California's redwoods going back to 1849.
It would seem unbelievable if it weren't true. EarthFirst!, bombs, crooked cops, racists. This is the story of the redwoods, or rather, the fight to protect the redwoods, as told by one of the partisans of this fight, Greg King. His new book, The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals and Real Estate in the California Redwoods is part memoir of his own time as fiery young radical in the Redwood Wars and part of history of the economic and social history that set the stage for the Redwood Wars.Greg joins the EcoNews to talk about his new book. On the afternoon of March 21st, 1924 a horrific crime shook the city of Chicago (and the entire country). Bobbie Franks, on his way home from school, was kidnapped and murdered by two teenage boy geniuses named Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. It has long been believed that Loeb was the mastermind behind the plan, while Leopold, in love with him, followed his orders. But my guests believe otherwise.Greg King and Penny Wilson, authors of "Nothing but the Night: Leopold & Loeb and the Truth Behind the Murder That Rocked 1920s America" reveal some of the fascinating information they uncovered while researching this case, including details of other murders Leopold and Loeb might have committed before they killed Bobby.Their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kingandwilsonFollow them on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AtlantisMagazinMore about the book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-but-Night-Leopold-America/dp/1250272661
Nearly a hundred years ago, two wealthy and privileged teenagers―Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb―were charged and convicted in a gruesome crime that would lead to the original “Trial of the Century”. Even in Jazz Age Chicago, the murder was uniquely shocking for the motive of the killers: well-to-do Jewish scions, full of promise, had killed fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks for the thrill of it. The trial was made even more sensational by the revelation of a love affair between the defendants and by defense attorney Clarence Darrow, who delivered one of the most famous defense summations of all time to save the boys from the death penalty. The story of their mad folie à deux, with Loeb portrayed as the psychopathic mastermind and Leopold as his infatuated disciple, has been endlessly repeated and accepted by history as fact. And none of it is true.Using twenty-first century investigative tools, forensics, and a modern understanding of the psychology of these infamous killers, Nothing but the Night turns history on its head. While Loeb has long been viewed as the architect behind the murders, King and Wilson's new research points to Leopold as the dominant partner in the deadly relationship, uncovering a dark obsession with violence and sex. Nothing but the Night pulls readers into the troubled world of Leopold and Loeb, revealing a more horrifying tale of passion, obsession, and betrayal than history ever imagined. NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT: Leopold & Loeb and the Truth Behind the Murder That Rocked 1920's America-Greg King and Penny Wilson.

We're so happy to be back after our summer hiatus. We've missed our wonderful educators and listeners. To kick off the school year, we're diving into a series of interviews with our CERTIFIED Ambassadors. We're starting off the school year with Greg King. Greg King is a Computer Assisted Design Instructor at McCann Technical School in North Adams, Massachusetts. Prior to leaping into a teaching career, Greg was a Senior Mechanical Designer/Project Manager for HVAC projects in both the design build and plan-spec marketplace. Greg has been an Autodesk student & user since 1997 with a primary focus on AutoCAD and Revit. Greg has an A.S. in Engineering Technology, and holds several accreditations including LEED AP O+M, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, Autodesk AutoCAD Certified User, as well as a MA Construction Supervisor License to name a few. In this episode, we chat with Greg about all things engineering. You've probably heard the joke, “Engineers aren't boring people. They just get excited over boring things.” But, that doesn't have to be true. Engineering doesn't need to be boring, and Greg is out to change that perception with his students. Listen for Greg's ideas to make engineering the coolest class at your school. He covers some of his favorite tools and topics, plus assignments that didn't go down as well as he'd hoped. Find out how to make engineering and design come alive! If you'd like to connect with Greg for additional ideas (or just to geek out over engineering), you can reach him at gking@mccanntech.org. This precious man, Greg King, looks like he could never do a wrong thing. NEVER! But when we factor in alcohol, we are dealing with more than just our own mindset. Now we've opened the door and let Satan have at it! Oh, yes...it will touch every listener hearing.

Greg King is our special guest on this week's episode of Three on the Ones and Twos. We honestly had no idea what record he would pick for us to discuss, but when he told us it was “Forever Came Today” by The Flesh Eaters, it all made sense. I can see Chris D.'s influence on Greg's style and persona as a frontman of GG King, and is a perfect fit for Jesse Smith's pick on the previous episode as a classic LA band from the punk era that does not get enough attention. Enjoy the episode, and listen to some Flesh Eaters!

On this first part of a 2-part episode, I share the fascinating story of the disappearance of the last imperial family of Russia, the Romanovs. After their disappearance, most believed they had been executed by the Bolsheviks, but sightings of one or more of the Romanovs would continue for years.
