In February Dr. Abbey Wick and I had the chance to attend a really unique event you may have heard of called Agronomy on Ice. This is an annual event on Devils Lake, North Dakota. Picture several ice houses and hundreds of people on a frozen lake in below zero temperatures who all just want to talk about agriculture and have a great time, and you'll have the basic idea. “If you've ever been to an ag show and they have booths and you walk down the alleys and you can stop and talk to people, think of that same concept only you're on a lake in North Dakota, in February, and instead of booths, you're in an ice house…..And the whole point is to treat it like a meeting, you come in see what is in the house and you start making connections.” - Jason Hanson The folks at Anheuser Busch were kind enough to let us set up shop in their ice house and host a series of casual conversations about soil health. We hear a few highlights from three of those conversations in this episode, which include Agronomy On Ice founder and Rock'N Roll Agronomy independent agronomist Jason Hanson, his Agronomist Happy Hour podcast co-host, Kyle Okke, the one and only Shark Farmer Rob Sharkey, Anheuser Busch Agronomy Manager Nikki Bylin, and Scott Bylin who farms in Northeast North Dakota also happens to be Nikki's husband. The day was filled with laughter, great conversation, food, and a whole lot of fun. “It's absolutely great. It's one of those things that's hard to explain...You look at it from the outside and you say, we're drinking beer, we're eating food. It looks like you're tailgating. I don't really see a lot of handouts or actual seminars... but the reality is you show up and you start meeting people, you start talking and you get into conversations…You make connections with people. You probably wouldn't have made in other settings and you probably learn more than you realize.” - Kyle Okke Throughout the day, we kept having people like Jason and Kyle pop in and sit down with us for a few minutes to talk about soil in their areas. Because as we know everyone's area and farm is unique. Our speakers shared what soil health means to their operation and customers. “Soil health is everything and it means a lot of things.….if you're not paying attention to your soil health, and you're not doing things to maintain good soils and good land, you're going to fall behind and you're not going to be profitable. You're not even going to be economically sustainable at where crop prices are.” - Kyle Okke This Week on Soil Sense: Enjoy hearing some of the conversations that happened at Agronomy on Ice 2022 Listen to “hallway conversations” with Agronomy on Ice founder and Rock'N Roll Agronomy independent agronomist Jason Hanson, his Agronomist Happy Hour podcast co-host, Kyle Okke, the one and only Shark Farmer Rob Sharkey, and Anheuser Busch Agronomy Manager Nikki Bylin and her husband farmer Scott Bylin Connect with Soil Sense Soil Sense Initiative Soil Sense Podcast is hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

SHOW NOTES INTRODUCING ANNA LINK! As an entrepreneur, I really appreciate people who go out and seize opportunities.  Actually, people who create their own opportunities are the ones that impress me most of all. Our guest today, Anna Link, did just that, and that is how she wound up being on this show.  Anna reached out to me and another agricultural podcast host, Rob Sharkey, on Twitter and requested to be a podcast guest.  I had her send me an email and let me know what she has been doing in the FFA, and it was a no-brainer.  I booked her on the show right away. Creating her own opportunities seems to be a character trait of Anna's, as requesting to be a guest on this show is certainly not the only time that she has done this.  Anna raises Hereford hogs, and she does so because they are so underrepresented in the show pig world.  But she did not stop there.  She started a Facebook group for people with Hereford hogs in Missouri.  That group has grown and now has spread across state lines. Anna also took the initiative to be part of the 4H as well as the FFA, as her parents were not pushing her to go that direction, she lives in town and does not have a farm.  Those efforts have led her in a good direction though, and she found herself serving as her chapter's president as well as her area's reporter. Enjoy this episode with this exciting young student.

More on Lesley: Lesley Kelly actively farms with her family at Watrous, Saskatchewan. Lesley is the head and heart behind the High Heels & Canola Fields blog where she dispels myths about agriculture and brings consumers and farmers together. She started the blog four years ago to promote agriculture and farmers, create community and have fun. A place to share stories and the whys and a place for her and others to learn, grow, smile and connect. Lesley's goal in being involved in agriculture beyond the farm from blogging, being a co-host on What The Farm podcast with Rob Sharkey and vlogging (Riding in Cabs with Farmers) is to bring people together, create conversation, collaborate and identify solutions that help both the industry and consumers. Mental health is near and dear to her heart. Lesley has been a leader in advocating for mental health in agriculture. She's been a part of the national Bell Let's Talk campaign and co-founded the Do More Agriculture Foundation whose mission is to break barriers and support all producers in taking care of their mental well-being. She was recognized by the Regina YWCA with the Women of Distinction award for this work. When Lesley isn't in the field, you can find her running to the hockey rink with her boys, taking pictures, going for a run on country roads, learning how to cook for a harvest crew and traveling with her husband, Matt. *Connect with Lesley* IG: @highheelsandcanolafields FB:@highheelsandcanolafields Website: http://highheelsandcanolafields.com/ Keep up to date with all things "The Dirt" by following along on Social Media IG: @agchicks https://www.instagram.com/agchicks/ FB: Ag Chicks https://www.facebook.com/agchicks Watch the visual version of every episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17nMmWCo1EY Shop Ag Chicks apparel : https://shopjunkndisorderly.myshopify.com/collections/junk-style

On today’s episode of the Future of Agriculture Podcast, I am chatting with possibly one of the most active Twitter users within the agricultural space – Rob Sharkey. Rob is the host of an amazing podcast I recently discovered called The Shark Farmer Podcast. “Sharky,” as his friends lovingly call him, runs a grain farm in Illinois in addition to an outfitters business for deer hunters. Today, I had the chance to ask him some of the most pressing questions I’ve always wanted to ask a farmer. Additionally, he shares his story of some of the most difficult challenges and obstacles he and his wife has had to face as a business owner, and he shares his unique opinion on various “ag-vocating” strategies appearing on social media over the last few years.   “Social media has been one of the best things for the agriculture industry.” – Rob Sharky   This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: Sharky explains why he decided to start his podcast and what the journey has been like for him. He explains why he stopped using Twitter for about a year. We discuss “hard times,” what hard times looked like for him and his wife, and how they overcame these challenges. We talk about the ag-vocating strategies across social media and he shares his opinion about these messages. He shares his advice to farm equipment and product sellers. He shares his opinion on the different “clicks” throughout the agriculture industry. Sharky shares his least favorite thing about owning a farming business, and what he thinks would change when his children take over the farm. He gives us insider information on what he plans to discuss at the Ag Chat Conference later this week!   Check Out Rob Sharky Across the Net: Shark Farmer on iTunes Shark Farmer on Twitter   Share the Ag-Love!
