In May 2000, 32-year-old Australian astrophysicist Rodney Marks died suddenly on an Antarctica base after falling ill just 36 hours earlier. The National Science Foundation (NSF) released a statement saying he most likely died of natural causes. But when the toxicology report came back, it revealed he had actually been poisoned by methanol. How did the methanol get in his system? And why did New Zealand authorities feel like the NSF wanted to stonewall their investigation? We spoke with reporter Stephen Davis, whose own investigation into the death of Rodney Marks first began more than two decades ago Stephen is also a professor and the host of the audio series The Secret History of Antarctica.
It's good to be back! Dat zeggen we altijd, en al zeker als we na enkele maanden terugkeren om het vierde seizoen van deze podcast officieus te openen. Officieus, inderdaad, want dit is de zogenaamde ‘nulaflevering'. The mysterious Death of Rodney Marks. Email us your mysteries at thisisdumbproductions@hotmail.co.uk
May 12, 2000. The South Pole, Antarctica. While working at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, 32-year old Australian astrophysicist Rodney Marks becomes seriously ill before he dies. Rodney's death is initially assumed to be natural causes, but when his body is transported to New Zealand months later, an autopsy reveals that he died from acute methanol poisoning. The New Zealand Police attempt to launch an investigation, but run into jurisdictional issues and since Rodney's American-based employers prove to be uncooperative, a coronial inquest fails to reach a conclusion about how Rodney died. Was Rodney Marks' methanol poisoning a tragic accident or was he the victim of foul play? Antarctica - a place of scientific research and study, and rarely a place for criminal activity. Though at the turn of the century, an Australian astrophysicist came down with a sudden illness before dying a day later. Due to winter setting in, a proper autopsy wouldn't be possible for another 6 months. Thanks to COVID, we all now know, better than ever the impact that social isolation can have on our mental health. Depression, confused thinking, and emotional instability were symptoms many of us became all too familiar with; but imagine you had been in lockdown somewhere thousands of miles away from the nearest city, in perpetual darkness for 6-months of the year, and subjected to temperatures as low as -80 degrees celsius... Oh, and you're locked down with your co-workers...That shit might just make you want to kill somebody... right?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
With no permanent residents, violent crime in Antarctica is very low. But low doesn't mean zero and the mysterious death of Rodney Marks is thought by some to be one of the only murders on the continent. *This case is unsolved* Want more content? Rodney Marks died a mysterious death in the South Pole in 2000.
Democrat Riggers have indicted Donald Trump again accusing him of leading a criminal conspiracy in the 2020 election. CPAC Australia triggered the usual suspects outraged at truth and jokes. A riggerrous edition of Tim's News Explosion. The Matildas didn't win the FIFA Women's World Cup. But because they came 4th they will be getting a bronze statue in Brisbane and a mural outside Stadium Australia. Federation Square was banned as a live site because of too many flares. The mainstream media declared the Matildas one of the gayest teams at the World Cup. However the cashed up Saudi Pro League won't be featuring any gay players where even public displays of Christianity are illegal. Louise Milligan on ABC's 4 Corners is dedicating a whole report about there being no openly gay male AFL players. In Melbourne a group of lesbians want an exemption from the Sex Discrimination Act to hold a lesbian-born female event at Victoria's Pride Centre. The CPAC Australia conference featured some based speeches including comedian Rodney Marks paying respect to the traditional owners ‘violent black men', Gary Johns stating Aboriginals need to learn English and just being an Aboriginal means you will die younger, the Christian founders of GiveSendGo stating they will only cancel those on terrorist lists, who support murder (abortion) and child abuse (gender transitions for minors), and the new Australia Christian Lobby Director Michelle Pearse opposing a proposed NSW ban on gay conversion therapy. But what most outraged the usual suspects was CPAC refusing to cancel former Blaze TV host Elijah Schaffer because he interviewed Joel Davis. Dan Andrews has paid the Commonwealth Games Federation $380 million of Victorian taxpayers' money in compensation to not put on the games in 2026. He is cutting money in other areas such as helicopter water bombers just in time for bushfire season. Poor urban planning has resulted in an estate in the Melbourne suburb of Kalkallo only having one entry and exit (but maybe that's by design?). A new Omicron subvariant BA2.86 with 30 mutations has been discovered which Alex Jones reported will be used as a justification for new mask mandates and lockdowns according to a US TSA source. Donald Trump's fourth indictment is under Georgia's RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act accusing him of leading a criminal organization to overturn the state's 2020 Presidential election result. Trump posted on his Truth Social accusing Fulton County DA Fani Willis of only going after those that fought to find the Riggers. Al Sharpton claimed Trump made up the word Riggers because it rhymes with the N-word because Fani Willis is black. Trump will not be attending any of the Republican Presidential primary debates. Another Killer nurse has been uncovered in the UK. Lucy Letby was found guilty of murdering 7 babies and attempted murder of 6 in an NHS neo-natal ward. Could the high number of British killer nurses be because they are protected by the cult of the NHS and are all as revered as Florence Nightingale? Rodney Marks was only 32, but he had already earned so much respect as an astrophysicist. And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn't land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned. This week we are joined by Richard, co-host of both Private Dicks and Unethical podcasts. In May 2000, a young Australian scientist named Rodney Marks died unexpectedly at a research base at the South Pole. His cause of death was determined to be acute methanol poisoning. Almost 23 years later, no one knows how Rodney ingested the poison or whether his death was an accident, a suicide, or a murder. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the mysterious death of Rodney Marks. Rodney had been to Antarctica a number of times before, and he had to pass a number of tests each time he went. Rodney was working at a station there at the time of his death, with about 50 people in total. Unfortunately, this station was cut off from the outside world for over six months at a time so when Rodney died, no autopsy could be performed until much later. Speculation and theories abound as to just what exactly happened to Rodney Marks.

By all accounts, Rodney Marks was a dedicated and passionate astrophysicist research scientist. He was studying Antarctic astronomy at the South Pole when he was mysteriously murdered in 2000. This episode is a slight departure from our usual programming. Buckle up for a deep dive into a truly fascinating topic...Antarctic crime. Crimes which occur in Antarctica may be rare, but they are rife with drama and intrigue. In this episode, Heather Thorkelson and Lauren Farmer discuss the complicated legal background of investigating and prosecuting a crime on the white continent, where multiple countries can claim jurisdiction based on where the crime occurred and who was involved. Several psychological factors also contribute to these criminal acts, including isolation and boredom. Paired with alcoholism, which is a known problem on the continent, trouble ensues. Lauren and Heather take us on a wild journey through the most infamous cases, starting with an ice axe attack over a chess game in 1952 and finishing up in 2018 with an ongoing feud ending in a violent stabbing. HIGHLIGHTS 1:05 Heather offers an overview of crime in Antarctica including what types of crimes have been committed over time 2:15 The legal background is incredibly complicated when it comes to which country has jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute crimes 7:23 Several psychological factors contribute to crimes in Antarctica, including isolation and boredom 9:55 The first Antarctic crime reported in any detail was a fight over a chess game at Russia’s Vostok Station in 1959 12:55 The infamous arson case at Almirante Brown Station on the Antarctic Peninsula in 1984 16:36 In 1996, a chef at the USA’s McMurdo Station attacked a coworker with the claw end of a hammer. 21:10 The case of Rodney Marks, an astrophysicist at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station who died in 2000 under mysterious circumstances. 32:02 As recent as 2018, an ongoing feud results in a stabbing at Russia’s Bellingshausen Station on King George Island. 39:25 Lauren discusses the various types of crimes that may be committed during ship-based operations and the jurisdictional issues that arise
Rodney has been a comedian since 1991 using 'hoaxes and jokeses' to bring light and joy to private and public events and corporate sessions. Rodney is hilarious as well as deeply kind and caring and has a beautiful knack for exploring the human experience with both lightness and depth. In this conversation, Rodney shares the inspiring, unique and ultimately awe-inspiring journey of one of his boys, who is (though never formally diagnosed) most likely somewhere on the autism spectrum.

We shall explore all the different possibilities on this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, which covers our very first mystery from Antarctica. Rodney Marks dies suddenly after vomiting blood on the research station he works for in Antarctica. What appeared to be an accident turns into several unanswered questions after his autopsy.
May, 2000. Australian Rodney Marks, 32, dies after a sudden mysterious illness while working on a research station at the South Pole. Later investigations find he died from ingesting a lethal amount of methanol. Was Rodney Marks’ death a tragic accident, an elaborate suicide or a sinister plot by one of his Antarctic colleagues? Rodney Marks was an astrophysicist who tragically died while overwintering in Antarctica in 2000. His cause of death was unknown, and his body stayed in Antarctica for five months after his death, as the below-freezing temperatures prevented his body from being flown back to be examined. When an autopsy was conducted, it was shockingly revealed that Rodney had died, not from natural causes as suspected, but from methanol poisoning. The 32-year-old was a genius scientist, working a dream job in a place he adored, who was talking about marrying his girlfriend.Suicide seemed unlikely, but to the fifty people living on the Admunsen-Scott South Pole Station, murder seemed impossible.EPISODE NOTES:Rodney Marks has become known, not for his scientific discoveries, but for being the first possible murder victim in Antarctica.Rodney Marks did more in his 32 years on this planet than I, personally, could ever achieve in five million lifetimes. He was beyond smart, was friendly, quirky, and well-liked by his colleagues in Antarctica. In his short time on Earth, he helped work on project that have both answered and asked more questions about our universe. The explanation for Rodney’s death has never been uncovered. For decades, the options have floated before investigators and those in Rodney’s life who still wonder – suicide, homicide, or accidental death? So many things have hampered the answering of these questions, from the complicated jurisdictional legalities at play in Antarctica, to inadequate medical care, to the possibly intentional suppression of the investigation by American organisations.Articles about Rodney litter the internet, here’s a small sample of those we used for this episode:https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/579732/mysterious-death-rodney-marks-scientist-who-was-poisoned-antarcticahttp://www.igpp.ucla.edu/public/mkivelso/refs/PUBLICATIONS/polar%20death.pdfhttps://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10561811https://www.mensjournal.com/features/a-mysterious-death-at-the-south-pole-20131125/And this is the CARA memorial page: https://www.southpolestation.com/trivia/blueflash/comments.htmlIf you like what we do please consider supporting us on PATREONSubscribe to the podcast on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.comwww.thatsnotcanonproductions.com

A mysterious death at the South Pole would spark a nearly decade-long international investigation.Rodney Marks was a 32-year-old astrophysicist, who worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. There, he had been working on a project to help map the stars, and not only did he take great pride and enjoyment in his work, but he also enjoyed the isolated culture down at the South Pole - where he would live for months at a time.On May 11th, 2000, Rodney began to complain of illness. Over the next 36 hours, his symptoms would progress to the point of no return, and the following evening, he would pass away due to total heart failure. Because the South Pole was so isolated, an autopsy could not be performed until months later. But when his remains were examined by a coroner later that year, the results were shocking... Rodney Marks was an Australian astrophysicist, who worked with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at the South Pole. After a day’s work, he became violently ill. 24 hours later he would be dead. But due to the harsh weather conditions, it would be six months before his body could be transported to New Zealand for a post-mortem examination. After an excruciating wait, results showed that Rodney had died from methanol poisoning. On the base were 49 other people, trapped in the winter cold. Was Rodney killed by one of his co-workers, or was his death a tragic accident? "Murder at the South Pole" is the kind of headline that newspapers can't resist. The people that choose to "winterover" at the South Pole in Antarctica are known as "polies", and they have a saying: "What happens on the ice stays on the ice" To them, to try to help outsiders understand what life is like there is an antithesis to why one goes there in the first place. For somewhere that doesn't see sunlight for eight months at a time. Shady things still go on. -LIKE-SHARE-COMMENT-TAG-REVIEW- Every month we'll choose one person from the seedy world of social media notifications and send them some free stuff... We're back from our world travels and we're talking about Antarctica. It's real strange down there dudes. Antarctica is larger than the continental United States, it's never been warmer than 58 degrees, there aren't any time zones, and there's just one native insect species. Oh, and it's full of UFOs and Bigfoots. Hot Topics: Antarctica, Operation Highjump, Rodney Marks, whale tanks, seal sounds, no more dogs, we're a bit rusty, and much more.
