Today, we're talking about a new phenomenon that affects social interactions. Phubbing is something we've all likely experienced or done ourselves at some point. The term is a portmanteau of "phone" and "snubbing", and refers to the act of looking at your phone instead of paying attention to someone else in a social situation. It's becoming increasingly common as our reliance on our mobile devices continues to grow. The term was first introduced in 2012 by Australian advertising agency Maccann Erickson, as part of a campaign for the Macquarie Dictionary. The “A Word is Born” campaign was designed to demonstrate that language is constantly evolving and hence having an up-to-date dictionary is important. Where does the term come from? Why do people phub then? How can we avoid phubbing someone? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Today's show had everything: drama, creativity, and a few million-dollar bananas. We kicked things off by dissecting the new Real Housewives of Beverly Hills taglines, and yes, we tried coming up with our own. Let's just say Joel's tagline had a bit too much attitude for reality TV. Then it was straight to spuds—no, not Joel. A business on Shark Tank is cashing in by writing personal messages on potatoes. Yep, they're making a literal hash of the competition! We also revealed Macquarie Dictionary's Word of the Year—enshittification. Don't worry; we broke it down for you, so you can start slipping it into conversations to sound intellectual (and a little cheeky). And now, for the pièce de résistance: Lin Manuel Miranda. We took a deep dive into why he's an absolute genius… sort of. It was more of a Lin-credible, Lin-sane, Lin-tensely hilarious chat about his unmatched creativity and possibly why he's the only person allowed to rhyme “Miranda” with “grande.” If you thought we were done, you're wrong—Lin-derestimating us, perhaps? Meanwhile, someone paid millions for a banana at an auction, proving that art is bananas—literally. We also wrapped things up with a Joel Jivin showdown themed around box office hits. It's a Lin-chanting, Lin-teresting, and wildly funny episode. Listen now before you feel Lin-excluded!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our host, Kosta Lucas speaks with Dr Katie Attwell, Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA). Dr Attwell leads the large interdisciplinary research project “Coronavax: Preparing Community and Government” with colleagues from UWA and Telethon Kids Institute. ‘Vax' was the Oxford word of the year in 2021, with ‘Strollout' being the word of the year in Australia according to the Macquarie Dictionary. The beginning of 2022 then became all about mandates, vaccine mandates being the main flashpoint of public contention. But do any of us actually really know what the term “mandate' really means? We've seen the terms “mask mandate”, “vaccine mandate” and even policy mandate, applied to different COVID responses and settings. But what is a mandate really designed to do, how has it been implemented and is it actually effective as a lever of social policy implementation?

Sitting there waiting for someone to finish being on their phone is not very enjoyable. You are being ignored and not paid attention to. This is phubbing, the combination of being on your phone and snubbing someone. It's happening all over but especially within families. In today's podcast, we are going to go over what you can do if someone is phubbing you and if you are the one guilty of phubbing, we will give a few tips so you can stop it. There is an overarching category to when technology devices interrupt or intrude our lives, this is defined as technoference. It's the mix of technology and interference. This is happening in our families and only getting worse as rings, notifications beeps and vibrations happen more frequently. You are playing with your child and your phone in your pocket beeps or vibrates. You got a message! You have to check it and that is a technoference. Taking it a step further, If you are paying attention to your mobile phone instead of the person you are with, you are a phubber. Phubbing effects our families (including our children and spouses) as well as our friends and people in the workplace. The word phubbing was created by the McCann advertising agency in 2012 as part of a marketing campaign for the Macquarie Dictionary. It means the combination of phone and snubbing. When someone phubs you, you may feel less important, rejected , or excluded and this can have a negative impact on you. It's not a good feeling. Now, the most common phubbing that happens is between partners or spouses. If it is your spouse who is phubbing you, here are a few things you can do to try to reduce it: 1) Have a direct conversation - Your spouse may not even realize that they are phubbing you. Have a phubbing intervention. You may say, "Sometimes when we are together, and even when I'm talking to you. your head is in your phone. I'm being phubbed and I feel like you are ignoring me. Let them know it's not welcomed. 2) Be more entertaining or interesting - You might not like this one but take a hard look at yourself and see if maybe you are really boring. Is the phubbing possibly justified because you are not making any effort to engage your spouse. Ask them to go on a walk, play a game, do something rather than just sitting and wishing they would pay attention to you. 3) Create rules - In our house, we have a rule that there are no electronics at the dinner table. Maybe when you are on a date together, phones are put away and only used to be available for an emergency. Come up with the rules regarding phone usage when together that are realistic and that you both can live by. These tips can help you reduce your spouse's phubbing. But what if you are the phubber? What if you are phubbing your children? If you are, then you are communicating to them that the phone is more important than them. Whether you are phubbing your spouse or your child, there are some things you can do to try to end your phubbing. 1) Reduce notifications - Turning them off is best but I understand this may be too revolutionary of a concept. But is there anything that important that can't wait? You have to know that someone sent you a Facebook or Instagram message? Turning off or reducing notifications can help reduce the temptation to even be on your phone. This can pre-empt the phubbing. You get a message and before you know it, you are down a deep rabbit hole of pictures of classic cars. 2) Ask yourself: Can this wait? - When you pull out your phone, is it really that important? Or are you simply on autopilot, bored, or not even realizing you are doing it? Before you grab your phone, ask yourself if it can wait. 3) Be present - If your spouse or child is in the room and you happen to be on your phone, maybe consider putting the phone down or away. Show them that they are more important than the phone. When you are alone, go for it. But when others are present,

Before 1788, hundreds of Indigenous languages were spoken in Australia. Today, that picture looks very different, but language remains an essential part of the fabric of Indigenous identity. In this special episode of Word for Word, we explore a language with tens of thousands of speakers, as well as some languages spoken only by a handful of people; novelist Kate Grenville tells the story of an unusual First Fleet lieutenant and his attempts to learn the Gadigal language; and we meet a young Indigenous woman in the remote community of Ngukurr, who is determined to keep her grandmother's language alive. Macquarie Dictionary acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, culture and community. We pay our respects to elders past and present. We acknowledge the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their cultures, languages, communities and ways of life. We acknowledge there are differing usages of the terms “Aboriginal”, “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander”, and “Indigenous” within Australia, and use these terms respectfully throughout this episode. Não Me Critica

XH: Hello and welcome to Round Table’s Word of the Week. This week, we’re talking about the word “phubbing.” It’s a really funny sounding word. John: It’s actually a neologism, two words combined into one. The first word is “phone” and the second word is “snubbing” so we come up with the word “phubbing.” XH: 这个词被翻译成低头症,也就是指因为低头玩手机而冷落了旁边的人的一种症状。 John: The term “phubbing” is supposed to mean someone who has the habit of snubbing someone in favor of using a mobile phone so that could be in a restaurant, that could be in a bar while you’re on a date or perhaps even while you’re watching a movie. XH: It seems that everyone is guilty of “phubbing” nowadays, but then where exactly did this word come from? John: That’s actually the funny thing about this word. This isn’t a word that someone randomly came up with and started using on Reddit or Twitter or what-have-you. Instead it was actually created by McCann Melbourne, which is an advertising agency that created the word behind a campaign by the Macquarie Dictionary to describe the habit of snubbing someone in favor of a mobile phone, now we call it “phubbing.” Macquarie Dictionary actually began a “Stop Phubbing” campaign that was designed to bring attention to this word and, of course, bring attention to the dictionary. XH: 和其它自然而然产生的新鲜网络词汇不同,这个词居然是由一个公关公司制造出来的,并且随着这个词汇的推广,他们还开展了一个叫做“停止看手机”的活动。 John: Not so much to do with pubbing, but I think one of the best strategies to deal with people who are, for example, walking on the street or in a subway station looking at their phone and not looking where they’re going, is most people have the tendency to try to walk around them, but I think the most effective way, as like a public campaign to get people to stop doing that, is to not walk around them. Either you can walk right into them, you know, gently, don’t hurt them or get into a fight. Or you just stop where you are and let them run into you. XH: That’s a very interesting idea, John, but I’m not sure how many lawsuits or street fights that will instigate. John: That’s what I’m saying, just do it gently and everything will be okay. The whole point is to remind people to stop doing that. XH: Hmm. Alright and that’s it for Round Table’s Word of the Week.

Even better, am I..or do you think I am? The Macquarie Dictionary defines racism as: "the belief that human races have distinctive characteristics which determine their respective cultures, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule or dominate others." So now the question is are you a racist? You see this term has evolved into more than skin color. It has crossed over into socio-economic related bias also. For example; if you are white, but believe that you are not the same as "white trash" then to ME you are still a racist. The same if you are black living in the burbs, but you think "niggas in the hood" are beneath you. And yes to you hispanics that think you are not the same as a "wet back fresh from the border" you are no better. But sometimes generalizing can be mistaken for racism. To say that black people that live in the projects mostly are living on welfare pimping the system and tend to be lazy, have babies out of wedlock and are prone to commit crime is really not racist. It's a mere fact when you look at the data. If you use the word "cracka" or "nigger" does that make you automatically a racist? If you are white and are suspicious of a group of black males walking toward you on a street corner is that racist? If you think illegal immigrants should be forced to leave America are you one? What about being suspicious of an ARAB boarding the same plane as you? The country is a "melting pot", but the "ING" at the end word "melting" means we are not fully cooked and blended all the way. So let's see where the hearts and minds of the callers are on K-100.
