Send us a textMike Perry has had a wild ride through the world of design. From cropping football players at NBC Sports to launching award-winning liquor brands with his agency, Tavern, Mike brings real craft, deep industry knowledge, and an obsession with the details that most people ignore. In this episode, Kirk and Andy dig into the intersection of creativity, commerce, and booze—specifically how alcohol packaging isn't just design, it's storytelling, strategy, and sculpture in one.Mike shares his journey from designing promos for MLS and NHL to building branding for Budweiser, Guinness, Pabst, and Smirnoff. He breaks down the thinking behind the recent Old Grand-Dad 16 redesign, how to work with (not against) label regulations, and why the back-of-pack matters just as much as the front. You'll hear about:• The unglamorous start at NBC Sports—and what you can learn from cropping out athletes• The power of legacy marks and why Tavern's “modern heritage” philosophy works• What designers get wrong about spirits packaging• Building client trust on brand revivals like Old Crow and Old Grand-Dad• Why design teams should always go through the archives• How bottle structure influences perceived value (and pricing psychology)• When you shouldn't follow hierarchy—and how to know when to break the rulesIf you've ever wanted to get into spirits branding, or if you're a packaging nerd who can't stop redesigning your bourbon shelf in your head, this episode will hit.Mike also talks about the highs and heartbreaks of launching new brands, working with master distillers, and the weird joy of seeing your beer can design in a trash pile after a party—because it means someone loved it.We'll definitely have him back for a full deep dive into beer design. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief steps off the whiskey trail to sit down with singer-songwriter Colin Boutwell at Wilson Valley Mercantile Distillery. Together, they dive into whiskey, love, and music, making for a soulful and spirited conversation. Colin, a longtime whiskey enthusiast whose journey began with Old Grand-Dad, shares stories and songs that take Big Chief on a nostalgic ride through the back roads of the Texas Hill Country. Colin performs four songs during the show, showcasing remarkable vocal and guitar control, effortlessly transitioning between notes and dynamics to captivate the room. Throughout the episode, Colin savors Wilson Valley Mercantile's Texas Notch Bourbon on the rocks. This “seed-to-sip” whiskey boasts a mash bill of 51% corn, 34% wheat, and 15% oats—all grown at Evans Ranch—and is aged for one year in Bell County. An additional yeast used during fermentation adds depth, creating a robust flavor that shines in every sip. Meanwhile, Big Chief enjoys Wilson Valley Mercantile's Texas Three Way Bourbon neat. Featuring the same mash bill as the Notch, he describes it as the perfect session whiskey—a spirit that pairs beautifully with porch-sitting and music that touches the soul. Once again, Big Chief uses this pause from the whiskey trail to spotlight a talented musician, proving that whiskey and music are the perfect pairing. Cheers to another unforgettable journey on The Whiskey Trip!

Steve Malloy of Malloy's Finest and Eric Rosentreter of Old Elk are back to discuss the financial side of whiskey and to drink some American spirits. While sipping on Virginia Distilling Co.'s collaboration with Goose Island and Old Grand Dad 16, we discuss how legacy brands are releasing more LTO's and earlier than usual; and is building a brand on LTO's a viable option. We also hit on the small batch blenders and their importance, retailers coming to realization that they're not the whiskey account that thought they were, and the current glut of whiskey that producers are in.Guests: Steve Malloy & Eric RosentreterHost: Jake HukeeListen to more episodes and read stories at keyinthelake.comKey In The Lake
Beam checked every box with this new release! It's their high rye recipe (Old Grand Dad) released as a single barrel at 7 years old at 107 proof. I don't I think we could have scripted it any better. And the results are incredible. Best NOSE on a Beam item I've smelled in years, maybe ever! Lot's of candied almonds and tropical fruit, very fragrant. On the palate, tons of Beam yeast flavor with orange rind, caramel, and soft spices to finish. The price is high, but it's an innovative release that doesn't rely on finishing, gimmicks or anything, just darn good bourbon released at the right age and the right proof. Worthy of any drinker's Collection.
I think I've been begging for an age stated OGD for the better part of a decade which is why I was so pleased to see a 16yr old Old Grand Dad at 100 proof just drop! Beam's high rye mashbill is on full display in this allocated offering, serving up licorice, orange marmalade, oak spice, fine leather and an impeccably chewy finish. This is a big, spicy, yet elegant whiskey right at home on the TOP shelf in any collection.
Jim Beam has been releasing limited edition bottles faster than we can keep up with. As a result, we thought it would be appropriate to review two brand new releases that are being discussed a lot: Old Grand-Dad 16 Year and Booker's The Reserves (2024 release). Both of these whiskeys are produced by Jim Beam, but they have different mashbills and there are significant differences in both age and proof. But, how do they taste? You'll have to listen to find out. Even though this is a "short" episode, we found a way to incorporate many blinds and pack in a ton of goodness. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

About a month ago rumors broke that the beloved Old Grand Dad 114 was kicking the bucket. A WhiskeyTuber released a video discussing an article from Vine Pair stating that insider information from Jim Beam was going to stop making OGD 114. The good news is at the time of uploading this Podcast the videos description has been updated stating "people at Beam reached out to me to let me know that Old-Grand Dad 114 is indeed still in production and will continue to be." That being said this episode looks at the news swirling around at the time of these rumors and what our thoughts where.
After an overwhelming responses from a post about what to review, the OGD 114 was highly suggest on X. So we do it! - - We also recap a massive haul from a trip to the liquor store. - Some blinds we did over July 4th. - And our review of the OGD 114 and what we think. Maybe go get yourself this bottle since it looks like it is going to be discontinued.

Tasting Notes: Since Old Grand Dad 114 has become more widely available again, we'd thought we revisit this under the radar value bourbon. Made with Jim Beam's slightly higher rye recipe, the same as in Basil Hayden, and bottled without age statement at 114 proof. The normally "foxy" yeast and orange peel characteristic of Jim Beam is on full display with fruit, yeast, and oak being pushed forward by the higher proof. Light and fruity on the nose, but with bigger oak than regular Jim Beam, this is an easy every day sipper to fall in love with.
We open episode 92 with another round of booze where we talk a bit about Old Grand Dad bourbon and the Bottled in Bond thing. Phil went to a whiskey tasting. John also does a taste comparison between two different High West ryes. A mercifully brief post-Super Tuesday chat. Celebrity crushes. Phil had a salt bath. Kitchen equipment. More talk about what shows we watch and John is making some “Goulash”. Kenny of All Trades and BBQ With Franklin The Song: “Furtherer and Fewer in Between”

In this weeks episode we taste Old Grand Dad Bonded and 114 then discussYasujiro Ozu's "Tokyo Story" from 1953.
Tasting Notes: Orange blossom honey, leather, and fruit roll up the nose. Chewable palate of Albanese gummies, foxy yeast, and another pile of candied oranges and real Corinthian leather! OGD 114 was ignored forever, and now that you can't get it, everyone wants it! So what's new? That being said, this is a steadfast sipper, really showing off that foxy beam yeast and orange note at a very approachable price point.

This week we go down the Beam bottled in bond rabbit hole trying the Old Tub against its cousin the Old Grand-Dad. But then we decide to get the Old Overholt off the shelf, another Beam bottled in bond, and compare it to the Tub and Grand-Dad. By now you're probably as confused by all these Beam bottled in bond products as we are - so you should give us a listen to see which of these three we like the best.

In this week's episode, we tap into a few of our favorite cost-effective and readily available whiskeys. We get into Old Grand-Dad 114, Sazerac Rye, and Evan Williams Bottled in Bond and why these are our go-to bottles.
