Ms. Sanner starts off her talk by describing the history of the president's daily intelligence briefing, then dives into how the briefings are crafted. She discusses what it means to be an intelligence officer and the importance of these briefs to the entire national security community. Then, she describes the day-to-day of delivering intelligence to President Trump, what worked best, and the lessons she learned in the process. In the 38 years that Steve Sanner has owned and operated Jiffy Lube oil change shops in Indiana, he has laid down some serious tread marks. He is owner and president of Jiffy Lube of Indiana, which counts 51 locations and about 510 employees altogether. That's the vast majority of the Jiffy Lubes in the state. But he hasn't been content to simply make his mark as a major Jiffy Lube franchisee. He has volunteered at the highest levels of some of central Indiana's highest profile organizations, including the Indiana Sports Corp., the local organizing committee for the Big Ten Football Championship and the Washington Township Schools Foundation. And he has used his Jiffy Lubes as a platform for some surprising community-minded initiatives. He has supported Indiana artists by commissioning 30 murals for his stores. He's kicking off a campaign called “No ticket, let's fix it,” in which police officers around the state give motorists $25 Jiffy Lube gift cards to get minor car repairs, at a total retail value so far of $300,000. It's a great way to get motorists into Jiffy Lube, but Sanner says he also wants to promote positive interactions between police and motorists while keeping roads safer. Sanner is the guest for this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast. He starts with a few wild stories about his early days as an entrepreneur and how he got a foothold as a Jiffy Lube franchisee. He reacts to some of the common complaints that consumers have about oil change shops. And he talks at length about his secondary career as a volunteer, including being in charge of all of the laundry in the March Madness bubble when Indianapolis hosted all of the NCAA men's basketball tournament in 2021. In today's episode, we discuss the second part of Alpha Reverence in which we talk about the secular versions of spirituality from the book "The Power of Ritual" by Casper ter Kuile. He recommends taking some of the things from religious teachings and using them in your life. We can be spiritual even without religion. Sometimes our most meaningful rituals are ones that we create. Spirituality is a connection to yourself, to a higher power, and to others. Sacred and transcendental experiences don't ONLY exist in churches or synagogues, temples, or mosques. Anyone can access those experiences, we just have to learn how, with our intentions, to invite that to happen. It can be achieved through: Sabbath - a day of rest and reflection. Community - synchronized singing or movements (example: CrossFit); and joining a group with a common cause Sacred Texts - you can find wisdom through texts such as reading a book or joining a book club or some community. Meal Time - communal, start with a prayer, or a toast. Prepare it with intention. Sacred intentional thoughts about how amazing it is to eat this food. Rituals where people are asked to share something or end with a board game. Fasting - but not just for health benefits, save calories or get into ketosis. But do it for mental clarity and donate your saved $$ to a shelter. Pilgrimage - a contemplative journey to a sacred place. Going to the ocean to scatter ashes. A pilgrimage has a purpose. To heal? To find forgiveness? To just experience something new or awesome. Seasons - honor the beginning of spring, summer, fall, or winter. Connect with nature with a hike, picnic with friends, donate leftover food to a shelter. Confession groups - such as AA, 12 step type addiction, recovery groups, and other spiritual programs. Sacrifices - giving up something for other people or charity. Other questions answered in this episode: What is humility? And how do we do it? What is the value of forgiveness? Why do we need to do that? And how do you do it? To seek out sublime experiences enlarges us. What does this mean and how might we do it? The 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant asked these questions: (1) What can I know? (2) What ought I to do? (3) What may I hope for? (4) What is man? These are the basic questions of philosophy. The root of the word PSYCHOLOGY is psyche, which is Greek for spirit or soul. An evolved man is many things, he is tender and he is tough. He is humble and he is confident. He is grateful for what is and yet still constantly seeking. Today we discuss REVERENCE. This is about deep respect. This is about respect for life, respect for others, and has to do with the connections we can improve with a higher power, with other people, and even to the natural world. Reverence is about RECOGNITION of the purpose of life, the sanctity of life, the significance of life and it includes spirituality but not necessarily traditional religion. Questions answered in this episode: What makes it so tough for men to have their connection with a higher power? Is there any obligation following belief? What is religious practice do you do that does help you find that connection to your higher power? Topics discussed: Reasons why men find it difficult to connect with a higher power: Sometimes people find it difficult to have any concept of a higher power because they come from dysfunctional backgrounds such as having horrible, abusive, and distant fathers. Some religious models have unhealthy perspectives. They do things to an extreme which is opposite to the biblical perspective of God wanting to have a balance. When a person prays for something that didn't happen, they don't have the understanding of the purpose of prayer and that God is not a Santa Claus. It all comes down to readiness of being connected to a higher power because nobody is going to be able to make you do it. The obligation following a belief: Find beliefs, systems, structures that work then study those and apply discipline towards them. It's beneficial to people. If religion is a vehicle that works for a particular man, apply with caution and be thoughtfully aware of how much influence it has on you. Religious practice that can help men find the connection to a higher power: Service (voluntary) Offering Efforts and Time Giving and Sharing Teaching the Fellowshippers ATHEIST / AGNOSTIC How can a person like that explore spirituality? How can a person not interested in the traditional view of God improve their spiritual life? It depends on what they are trying to achieve. You have a decision to make in improving your spiritual life. It can also start on sublime experiences. Final words, when it comes to a man trying to mend a relationship with God: One of the things that God says is that if you seek me, you'll find me. And if you want to find God, the first thing you do is look, and I think you can look in creation. Just like in Google, whatever you're searching for in life, you're going to find it. We start with the rules, but eventually, in spirituality, things have to move beyond that. There's gotta be more to life than just me, even if it's just others. Born in Peru, Fernando Calderón-Figueroa accompanies us to learn about how cities have been designed to welcome or not their citizens. His research focuses on geography and territoriality with a focus on different international cities. He describes his fascination for how amazing humans have developed technology to adapt to their needs and create shelter. However, he questions the impact of built environments in urban design, and the concept of trust among people in relation to those contexts. He posits that there is a history of displacement, gentrification and social mobility that responds to how cities evolve and change over time. What can you do to make sure your first (or next) performance review is a positive one? You should just focus on your work and let your hard-earned talents and intelligence shine, right? Wrong. Many people assume that their bosses will know and remember everything they've done. But this is unlikely to be the case: Research finds that people overestimate the extent to which their accomplishments are noticed and remembered by others. Bosses are likely to be particularly bad at remembering their employees' accomplishments because they may have multiple employees, as well as their own goals to focus on. Performance reviews can be nerve-wracking, but they're important for ensuring your boss recognizes your value. Here are three tips for these anxiety-inducing conversations: • Highlight your achievements. Remind your boss of your accomplishments and how they've contributed to the outcomes your company cares about. You might say something like: “I know one of our team's biggest priorities this quarter was to increase our social media following by 20%. The social media plan I developed is something I'm really proud of because it helped us achieve that goal.” • Demonstrate how you've helped your boss. Remind them of times you've built upon their ideas, helped them execute their goals, and brought your own ideas to the table that helped advance their cause. • Reemphasize your commitment to your organization. State your excitement about contributing to the future of the team and improving upon the work you're already doing. The truth is, performance reviews aren't always fair. Think back to when you were hired for your current role. It's important to understand that these elements of your performance will take time to build, and you will regularly have to maintain them if you want to continue to be evaluated positively. by Pastor Chuck Ryan The Alabaster Box Text: Mark 14:1-11 Thesis: A true love for God and our Neighbor is Extravagant because God's love is extravagant. “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son…” John 3:16 Money can be a “stumbling block” for some believers, preventing them from doing ministry because it cost too much. (vs1-5) “They growled or glowered or scolded her.” (A.E. Sanner, BBC, Mark, page 388) This lady's love for Jesus was expressed in an extravagant manner. “a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume…, she broke it and poured the perfume on Jesus head…, it could have been sold for more than a year's wages. (vss.3b&5a) This was possibly her life's savings! Jesus defended her actions in eight statement, not just one. (vs 6-9) “Leave her alone” God defends those doing his will. “I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.” (Isaiah 49:25) “Why are you bothering her?” Be careful not to discourage someone doing an act of kindness in Jesus' name. “She has done a beautiful thing to me.” “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. (Philippians 4:8) “The poor you will always have with you and you can help them anytime you want.” “If you are looking for an excuse, any will do.” Unknown “But you will not always have me.” Do not take for granted the spiritual liberties that we have today. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.” Luke 21:33-34) “She did what she could.” God recognizes all our efforts and contributions when given from the heart. “And Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and began watching how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large amounts. And a poor widow came and put in two lepta coins, which amount to a quadrans. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44) “She poured perfume on my body before hand to prepare me for burial.” The lady's actions revealed she recognized Jesus as the Messiah. “I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” We are fulfilling Jesus word's as we retell this story. III. Then Judas left and went to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Judas' actions surrounding money was a radical contrast to the loving lady who broke the alabaster jar of expensive perfume!

The #MeToo movement has encouraged more women to speak out about sexual harassment they have faced. But Dr. Jeanne Sanner says women still need to do more. Some would say she has a controversial take, that women for their own sake need to forgive their sexual harassers—the Bill O'Reillys and Harvey Weinsteins who betrayed their trust. Jeanne says it is important for women who have been victimized to change their own perceptions of the event and to stop condemning the men. After she was raped by a stranger, Jeanne told herself, “He may have controlled my body but he will not have control of my life.” She took back her power by choosing love over fear. She is the author of the upcoming book “Finding Unconditional Love a Little Peace at a Time.” Jeanne has a doctorate in spiritual studies, a master's in education and a bachelor's in psychology.
