Episode Summary: Fighting and winning in the twenty first century requires next gen electronic attack capabilities. Designing that technology and developing effective concepts of operation demands operational analysis. Heather Penney discusses this reality with Lt Gen David “Kooler” Krumm, USAF (Ret.) of BAE Systems. It comes down to empowering strategists, operational leaders, and technology experts to better understand how these functions can best empower overarching tactics, techniques, procedures, and investment decisions. Electronic attack is an incredibly complex, multi-dimensional capability. It's not binary—like a light switch that's on or off. Instead, there are incredibly nuanced effects in play, especially if various mission systems are brought together in a collaborative fashion. Major shortfalls exist in this area and it's time to lean into developing the operational analysis required to ensure the U.S. maintains its electronic attack advantage. “With dignity, but like any Christian, because the bishop of Rome is a pastor and a disciple, not a powerful man of this world.”That’s part of the instructions from Pope Francis to “lighten” the formality of his funeral arrangements. Francis wrote about his wish for a simpler ceremony in his autobiography, published earlier this year. The attitude reflected his wish that the church move closer to regular people and its mission of serving the marginalized, including migrants and the poor. Pope Francis died this morning at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. He was 88. He was a unique figure in Catholic history. He was the first Latin American pontiff, having been a Cardinal in Argentina. And he was a decided pivot from the previous leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI. Where Pope Benedict was a traditionalist prior to stepping down from the position, Pope Francis spent his years pushing for a more inclusive vision of the Catholic Church. He was also the first member of the Jesuit order to be elected to the papacy. Episode Topic: The Search for an Inspiring Life - How to Measure What Matters MostCollege students are typically of an age in which they actively recalibrate their compass, whether morally, vocationally, or otherwise. They shift from relying on external authorities to relying on a developing, inner authority. Over the course of a lifetime, however, various external authorities can come back to predominate our mindset as the principal measure of life. In U.S. culture, success in terms of wealth and status are perhaps foremost among these external authorities. How might we challenge ourselves to measure life on the basis of something more enduring, such as the inspiration we receive and the inspiration we provide? Join us in this ThinkND session as we explore ways to understand and measure life as inspired. The session is designed especially for people who are thinking about how to take stock of life, whether or not they have retirement or a second career in sight, and who want to understand the value of interpreting life as a good, inspiring story.Featured Speakers: Fr. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please You does in fact please You. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that, if I do this, You will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust You always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for You are ever with me, and You will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen. – Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude, page 79. In the account of Matthew, Jesus' mission fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases” (Mt 8:17; cf. Is 53:4). Jesus' healing mission went further than caring only for physical affliction. He touched people at the deepest level of their existence; he sought their physical, mental, and spiritual healing (Jn 6:35, 11:25-27). He “came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10). From tribal villages in sub-Saharan Africa, across Europe, throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, he sought to influence the attitudes, perceptions, and ultimately the behaviors of foreign audiences. He led, shaped, and managed MITRE's support to USCYBERCOM bydeveloping and overseeing the execution of cross-cutting technical strategies to increase MITRE's impact in advancing the effectiveness of cyber operations. He has a deep and abiding passion for the practical application of influence and persuasion in competition and conflict as technological advancements drive new realities in how people consume and process information. Professor Venhaus served over 28 years in the U.S. Army, primarily in persuasive communications (PSYOP). He designed, implemented, and managed multi-media campaigns on four continents across the full spectrum of peace and armed conflict. Professor Venhaus retired from the Army in 2014 after serving in the Pentagon as the principal staff advisor to the Secretary of Defense for information operations. His published works include a special report entitled “Why Youth Join al-Qaeda,” which examined case studies of individuals who became foreign fighters to discern their behavioral motivations and seeks to establish a usable strategy to divert future generations from the path to extremism. He has also authored several classified reports on applying persuasive communications against malicious cyber actors and in the competition below the level of armed conflict. A 1987 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Professor Venhaus is a plank-holder in the PSYOP Regiment and a Life Member of the PSYOP Veterans Association. He has also been awarded a Master's Degree in International Relations from Troy University and Masters of Professional Studies in Strategic Public Relations from George Washington University. Living by faith is a long, slow and deep walk that carries us through every landscape and season we can imagine. Along the way, questions, doubt and fear arrive and travel with our faith, hope and love. In my experience, learning to acknowledge and even embrace this commingled company within takes time, wisdom and sacred friendship. C.S. Lewis found this type of friendship in his relationship with a spiritual director who he described as “a man of ripe spiritual wisdom, noble minded but of an almost childlike simplicity and innocence.” I sat down with Samatha Gilbertson to talk about spiritual direction and the gift of not walking alone. Samantha is in healthcare ministry, where she maintains dual leadership roles in Spiritual Care and Mission Integration. She graduated from Portland Seminary, of George Fox University, with a Masters in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship and continued her studies to obtain her Spiritual Direction certification. Join us to learn more about spiritual direction and for our conversation on grief and loving well, as we enter the holiday season.

One of the most difficult questions that patients can ask a healthcare provider is “why me?”. To complicate things further, this question is often posed with spiritual or religions undertones, i.e. “why is X, Y, Z god doing this to me?” While healthcare providers seek to treat the physical, at one point in their career they will be challenged to respond to questions of spiritual and religious doubt. This is no easy task, as studies have shown that spiritual care is an enigmatic area for healthcare providers with multiple barriers (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28249545?log$=activity;https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24480531).
