Scott Payne (Code Name Pale Horse, White Hot Hate) is a retired FBI Special Agent and author. Scott joins the Armchair Expert to discuss his first taste of undercover work in high school in South Carolina, how he caught the bug training as a fresh-face narcotics officer, and his long shot cold application to the FBI. Scott and Dax talk about his first undercover assignment in the Outlaws biker gang, the ins and outs of performing believable criminal activity, and navigating guilt around putting targets away whose trust he'd earned. Scott explains that the ultimate goal of undercover is accountability by building relationships you're going to betray, infiltrating an insidious and violent accelerationist white supremacist cell, and a terribly fraught encounter with a goat.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. “There are a lot of people out there who just don't know how evil the world can be,” says Scott Payne, a retired undercover FBI agent who spent his career infiltrating violent motorcycle gangs and white supremacist groups. After growing up in a Christian home, he briefly fell into Satan worship until an encounter with a real demon sent him running back to his Baptist church. But that wasn't his only face-off with a dark underworld in a career marked by burning Bibles, lighting crosses, and sacrificing goats, while undercover with the KKK and a new strain of young white supremacist chaos agents known as “accelerationists.” He and Glenn discuss George Floyd, Gretchen Whitmer's kidnapping, Aleksandr Dugin, and the humanitarian costs of an open U.S.-Mexico border. Scott reveals the connection between gangs, cults, extremism, and even radical jihad but says he remains an optimist through it all thanks to his family, the prayers of his wife, and his relationship with Jesus. In a time when so many don't trust law enforcement or the FBI, Glenn asks Scott, “Is the FBI good or bad?” You'll have to decide for yourself. Scott Payne spent 25 years in the FBI, a lot of the time undercover infiltrating Nazi groups and white supremacist organizations, motorcycle gangs, etc. He busted up many plots including one Dylan Roof copycat that wanted to attack a synagogue in Myrtle Beach. He also spent Halloween night 2019 camping in the backwoods of Georgia, huddled with a cell of neo-Nazis as they slaughtered a goat and drank its blood in a ritual pagan sacrifice. In Code Name: Pale Horse (coming March 25), this retired FBI agent, crowned as the "Hillbilly Donnie Brasco," takes readers into some of the most terrifying and risky assignments in the FBI's history. They will join Scott as he goes undercover with the lethal Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Massachusetts; ventures into the mountains of Tennessee where he was on the front lines of the opioid epidemic; and travels to Alabama, where he infiltrates the Klu Klux Klan by singing and playing guitar for them as a thirty-foot cross burns, and wonders how this is his life. All the while, he managed to stay married to the love of his life, raise two girls, and spend Sundays at church, drawing on his family and his faith to get him through harrowing and exhausting assignments. This is an inspiring, emotionally honest memoir from an American hero and an unflinching deep dive into the most dangerous and pressing threats, beginning and ending with one of the most overlooked ones: the recent rise of a neo-Nazi accelerationist movement that's working to spark a race war, and Scott's mission to take it down before the unthinkable happens.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Hey, this is Scott and you're listening to What Was That Like. And the name of the podcast, What Was That Like, was chosen very specifically – because that's what I ask people who are guests on the show. They've just been through something really unusual, like being attacked by a monkey, or saving the life of a stranger, or some other crazy situation. And I ask them to tell all of us – what was that like. All the details. So that's what we do here, every other Friday. But sometimes I like to find someone who has a really unusual job, and ask them the same question. Today I'm talking to Scott Payne. For many years, he worked for the FBI as an undercover agent. He would pretend to be a criminal, in order to join white supremacist groups or biker gangs – including the notorious Outlaws group. As you can imagine, this guy has some stories. I asked him lots of questions about this job, and then he answered a few questions from What Was That Like listeners. He's an open book, and I learned some things, and I hope you do too. Scott Payne spent 23 years with the FBI and went undercover to expose and take down some of the country's most violent criminal organizations. Over the past decade or so, white supremacist groups with names like the Patriot Front and the Atomwaffen Division have been quietly recruiting new members online, spreading propaganda and conducting paramilitary training exercises across North America. One of these groups is called The Base and, in the summer of 2019, Scott Payne wanted to become a member. But Scott wasn't a neo nazi or a rightwing extremist. He was an undercover FBI agent. Over the course of 28 years in law enforcement Scott has infiltrated biker gangs, posed as a hitman, and ingratiated himself with drug dealers. Now he's taking us inside that world, with a memoir called Codename: Pale Horse, and the second season of the CBC podcast White Hot Hate, both of which he worked on with journalist Michelle Shephard.Feedback for us? Host Diana Korte speaks with former FBI Agent Scott Payne, author of the memoir, “CODENAME: PALE HORSE: How I Went Undercover to Expose America's Nazis.”A decorated agent dubbed the “Hillbilly Donnie Brascoe,” Payne takes readers along with him on some of the most terrifying and riskiest assignments in FBI history. His book begins in 2019 on a hot summer's day in Georgia where he joins the Base, one of the fastest-rising, most radical white supremacist groups operating in the US. Payne spent 28 years in law enforcement investigating cases against drug trafficking organizations, human traffickers, outlaw motorcycle clubs, gangs, public corruption, and domestic terrorists. He was also a SWAT team operator and instructor for firearms, tactics, and undercover operations.
My guest today, Scott Payne, spent more than two decades working with some of the most notorious biker gangs, illegal drug operations, and neo-Nazis. And, it would be hard to even imagine some of the things he's seen and experienced in his decades-long career as an FBI Special Agent. Today, Scott and I talk about what it takes to be a successful undercover agent, the lines that get blurred when working with some of the most dangerous criminals in the world, how to keep your cool under pressure (including the time a notorious biker gang stripped him in a basement to search him for the wire he was wearing at the time), and how a man transitions back into his ordinary life after one of the most dangerous jobs he could do. This is an inspiring, emotionally honest memoir from an American hero and an unflinching deep dive into the most dangerous and pressing threats, beginning and ending with one of the most overlooked ones: the recent rise of a neo-Nazi accelerationist movement that's working to spark a race war, and Scott's mission to take it down before the unthinkable happens.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

How do ordinary people become dangerous extremists? Former FBI agent Scott Payne infiltrated America's most violent hate groups and reveals their playbook. What We Discuss with Scott Payne: Scott Payne worked as an undercover FBI agent infiltrating various extremist organizations, including white supremacists like the KKK and accelerationists such as The Base, which aimed to trigger societal collapse and establish a white ethnostate. Accelerationist groups differ from traditional white supremacist organizations in that they don't believe in political solutions, but train for violence and "Boogaloo" (race war), preparing with tactical gear and weapons while planning attacks on infrastructure and targeted individuals. During his undercover work, Scott encountered disturbing rituals and behaviors, including a goat sacrifice during which members drank blood and took LSD as part of a neo-pagan ceremony associated with white supremacist ideology. White supremacist recruitment often targets vulnerable individuals from broken homes who are seeking belonging and connection, with online platforms like Telegram and Gab serving as recruitment grounds where extremist content can radicalize disaffected youth. Deescalation and communication skills proved to be Scott's most valuable tools throughout his career. His experience shows that even in hostile environments, the ability to talk through situations and remain calm under pressure is often more effective than physical confrontation — a skill anyone can develop and apply to their own difficult interactions. And much more... Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1132 And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Sharing an episode of Agent Pale Horse. It tells the story of FBI undercover agent Scott Payne, whose job it was to infiltrate the most dangerous gangs of our times: outlaw bikers, drug cartels and the international neo-Nazi networks hellbent on inciting a race war. He was taking down these groups from within. And Scott was good at it — people confided in him their most audacious plans for mass violence and domestic terrorism. After a 28-year-long career pretending to be somebody else, agent Payne is ready to tell his side of the story, and an unvarnished view of a life undercover. In this episode, Scott has his first in-person meeting with The Base. Alone. He needs to convince the international neo-Nazi network that he's one of them. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, we welcome Scott Payne to the show. Scott, aka “Hillbilly Donnie Brasco”, is a retired FBI Special Agent who spent 28 years in law enforcement, investigating drug-trafficking organizations, human traffickers, and domestic terrorists. Much of that work was undercover work that included him infiltrating Neo Nazi/white supremacist groups (like the Ku Klux Klan and The Base) and biker gangs (like the Outlaws Motorcycle Club). He is the author of a new book “Codename: Pale Horse - How I Went Undercover to Expose America's Nazis”. In this interview, we discuss what led him to federal law enforcement, how he was recruited into undercover work, what it was like being trained by Joe Pistone (aka Donnie Brasco), how he got his introduction into infiltrating the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, the time when he thought his cover was blown and that he was going to be murdered by the gang, how he joined/infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, the difference between old school white supremacists and “Accelerationists”, if he is worried about his safety now that he is retired from law enforcement, and much more. Let's get into it… Episode notes and links HERE. Donate to support our mission of equipping men to push back darkness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

His new book, Code Name: Pale Horse, reveals the harrowing details of his undercover life, including moments where he was seconds away from being exposed and killed.Scott spent 18 months embedded with the Outlaws motorcycle gang. In one chilling moment, they decided to strip-search him while he was wired up, a scenario that could have ended him on the spot. He also infiltrated the KKK in Alabama, adopting the codename Pale Horse to penetrate a violent neo-Nazi cell known as The Base, which was actively planning attacks and preparing for a so-called race war. This is raw, unfiltered, and straight from the front lines of America's most dangerous extremist groups. Scott took unimaginable risks to save lives and bring criminals to justice—all while balancing a wife, two daughters, and his faith. FBI veteran Scott Payne takes us into the world of undercover ops: infiltrating biker gangs, near-death moments, and the psychological toll of betrayal. What We Discuss with Scott Payne: Scott Payne worked undercover for the FBI infiltrating The Outlaws motorcycle gang, forming relationships with dangerous criminals over an 18-month period to gather evidence on crimes including drug trafficking, stolen vehicles, and potential connections to murder. Scott's undercover work involved serious personal danger, including a harrowing experience where he was strip-searched in the basement of the gang's clubhouse while wearing recording devices that could have gotten him killed if discovered. The psychological toll of undercover work is significant — Scott describes forming genuine friendships with targets that he ultimately had to betray, as well as physical and mental exhaustion that led to a breakdown during the operation. The FBI has developed safeguards for undercover agents' mental health, including psychological assessments and contact agents who provide support and maintain the agent's connection to their real identity during long undercover operations. Success in undercover work depends on authenticity and adaptability. Rather than completely fabricating a persona, Payne maintained aspects of his true self while adjusting to his environment, allowing him to build believable relationships and respond naturally in high-pressure situations. This approach — staying true to your core self while adapting to challenging circumstances — can be applied in many professional and personal situations requiring resilience. And much more... Lead Management as a skill is something local in-market mortgage professionals never developed. Often we left that up to our Real Estate partners. That deficiency is now a major problem as the modern originator pivots to incorporating a direct to consumer digital and social media origination strategy. This deficiency is also compounded by the evolution of many of our Real Estate partners who have changed their prospecting strategy and have become lead aggregation machines themselves. So let's explore how we "get in the game" here and develop our own lead management mastery.

On today's episode Cody sits down with former US Marine Corp Pilot and current owner and operator Scott Payne, of the Purcellville, Virginia Chickfila. This is the same Chick-fil-a where the Shieldwall Bible Study holds their meetings and where Cody takes his family to enjoy The Original "Humble" Chicken Sandwich. Scott is "always faithful" ... to his family, to the LORD and and to the Chick-fil-a promise. You will hear what its like opening, running and maintaining excellent service from the perspective of a man truly out to serve you and your family "a meal filled with hospitality."
