"If you exist, you belong." Filmmaker Arielle Nobile ponders and explores the question of belonging, and has settled on this answer. Still, we continue to ask, 'Where do I belong?' 'Do I belong?' and 'How do we all belong, despite our differences?" We hope today's episode assures and inspires you that in our human family, despite our missteps, all are welcome here. Our conversation covers revolutionary listening, perhaps the most powerful key to understanding and accepting each other. We can belong to ourselves and stand on our beliefs, and belong to each other, even when we strongly disagree with each other. We also talk about Arielle's recent move from the U.S. to Argentina, and what that means, her journey from in front of the camera to behind it, and how creatives can become bridges to unite disparate - and often, alienated - groups of people.Arielle and I share our experiences in performing arts, communication and optimism in humanity during challenging times. Thanks for listening.Arielle is a documentary film maker, who is usually the one asking all the questions. She is the CEO of Legacy Connections , which was founded in 2005. Arielle's company produces documentary films for families to reflect on their history, truths, shared values and vision for the future. She received her BFA in Experimental Theatre from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She then studied in an MFA-style year-long directing program at Second City Theatre in Chicago. She taught improv and theatre at Second City and Piven Theatre to adults and children, which makes her uniquely skilled at helping all her subjects relax and be natural on camera. Arielle is the producer/director of the award-winning documentary series Belonging in the USA: Stories from our Neighbors. The first film in the trilogy, The Story of Michael D. McCarty was a 2019 official selection at the Pan African Film Festival, the largest Black film festival in the US. Check-out Arielle's related Belonging in the USA podcast. Arielle was named to The Independent Magazine's List of “10 Filmmakers to Watch” in 2018 for the Belonging in the USA documentary series. In 2012, she won a Hugo Television award for her 6-part public television series, Belonging in Boulder: Unexpected Stories from Your Neighbors.
I hope you're ready to laugh! Today's guests, Rob Snow and Nick Doyle are masters at improvisation, and they had me laughing before we even hit record. Rob started a non-profit called StandUp for Downs and performs improv across the country to raise money for local Down Syndrome affiliates. A few years ago, he developed the Improvaneer Method, a program that teachers individuals with developmental disabilities improvisation skills. The program has yielded so many gains for its students- eye contact, patience, voice projection, problem solving, adaption to change, listening, focus, quick thinking, creative thinking, character development- to name a few! Rob and Nick describe the program more in this episode, and yes, they made me play some improv games!!! Meet My Guests: Rob Snow - CEO and Creator Rob is a native Ohioan, but moved to Chicago and began his comedy and improvisation journey in the late 90s while training at the famed Second City Theatre, as well as Improv Olympic and The Annoyance Theatre. In 2000, Rob “gave up” comedy for the serenity of the “real world”. He married his wife, Ellen, and they had their first son Charlie. In 2009 the Snows moved back to Ohio and Rob decided to give comedy a shot again performing open mics and guests sets while he traveled for his day job. Also in that year, Rob and Ellen had their second son Henry who was born with Down Syndrome. The merger of Rob's passion for comedy and the love of his son has paved his path ever since. In 2011 Rob created his first of three one-man shows which he continues to perform nationally (www.weneedasign.net). The Snows also founded Stand Up For Downs, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the lives of those with developmental disabilities through humor. In 2017, Rob created the The Improvaneer Method. He serves as the Chief Executive and still rolls up the sleeves to Co-Direct when Maggie allows him. Nick Doyle - Assistant Director and Sales Associate Nick Doyle is from Canton, OH and has become a vital part of the success of The Improvaneer Method. Nick is an original cast member and quickly establish himself as the ‘big brother' and leader of the troupe. Through his dedication to the craft, he quickly became a standout performer. In 2019, Nick joined Rob as a board member of his non-profit, Stand Up For Downs. He also joined the board of GiGi's Playhouse Canton. Nick serves as an Assistant Director for online and live Improvaneer Method classes as well as a Sales Associate helping promote and sell programs at conferences nationally. He also continues performing with The Original Improvaneers around the country. Beyond serving in all of these roles, Nick works as a host at Applebees restaurant in Canton. He is currently performing a one man show called “Truth Be Told” around the country. Nick's hobbies include bringing joy to everything that comes into his path. In today’s episode, we have the extraordinary Sam Bennett joining me. She is an actor, speaker, teacher, poet, a creativity and productivity specialist and also the best selling author of Get It Done and Start Right Where You Are. This woman is going to blow your mind! We talk a lot about her acting years, her very well known actor friends, how she has spent a lot of time doing incredible TV and at the same time experiencing fear and struggled to truly be in the spotlight. We talk a lot about being afraid of success and of truly being seen. We had a lot of fun in this conversation. We talk about life, death, creativity, procrastination, depression and everything in between. Sam is very open and honest about her personal experience of depression, how it shows up in her life and how she moves through life in spite of it. This conversation is for anyone who wants to create something new, who wants to find their way to a brand new part of their identity and to also remember their core self - the self that has been with them forever. If you are going through a transition of any kind and you are about to jump into a brand new chapter, if you want to create something for the world and yourself, then I hope you will take the time to listen. It might just be life-changing. “Showing up more fully for yourself allows you to show up more fully for your family, for your friends, and for the world.” ~Sam Bennett Sam talks about that voice inside of us, that might just be a quiet whisper right now. The voice that says you can do this too. My request of you is to please make sure that voice is being heard and taken seriously. However quiet it is, it is Divine. It is God or the universe talking to you and it’s your destiny. Be sure to comment below or connect with me on Instagram and let me know what you think of this conversation. Jane Morris has improvised, written, performed, and directed shows around the world. Beginning in Chicago, where she helped found the Second City ETC with her husband Jeff Michalski, and later from her own theaters in Los Angeles, no one has done more to advance the art of improvisation than Jane. As an actress with over 58 credits to her name she is best known for her roles in Raising Helen, True Lies, Frankie and Johnny and recently in Veep. As a director Jane was nominated for a 1988 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Revue for "Channel This" at the Second City Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Jane conducts a solo performance workshop that takes original work from idea to staging, to performing. The class works with actors and writers at any level of the process, whether they are just getting started, or almost ready to mount a whole solo show. Her workshop has produced 9 original shows and every participant has finished work. http://scholarsy.blogspot.com/2017/04/jane-morris-explains-improvisation-and.html https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0606623/ http://janemorriswritework.blogspot.com/
