Melissa Davey took the adage about it's never too late to try something new quite seriously. This wasn't about jumping out of an airplane kind of stuff. In her sixties, she retired from a lengthy corporate career to pursue her second act and dream of becoming a filmmaker. I always tell teens I coach or meet who are stressed about picking a college major and choosing a career path, that the average American changes careers, not just jobs, seven times in their lifetimes. You never know when circumstances allow you to drop the grind and forge a new direction, like you heard Australian Maddy Reynolds do in a WASP episode a few weeks ago when she dumped the corporate world to become a pro trail runner. Melissa was the Vice President of Social Security and Managed Disability at GENEX for 22 years, sat on the company's executive team, and worked throughout the United States to create and deliver services to the disability insurance marketplace. But after a day on the set with famed screenwriter and filmmaker M Night Shyamalan, she decided to take a risk and left her career to jump into the unknown. Pursuing her dream of becoming a filmmaker became a reality in late 2018 when Melissa completed her first feature film, Beyond Sixty, which highlights stories of women making similar jumps, including the woman behind the original voice of Siri, the Madam CJ Walker biographer, and the sculptor of Lady Gaga's Fame perfume carriage. During 2019, Melissa's film was accepted by and screened at eight film festivals throughout the United States and Canada, winning awards and confirming that it is never too late to learn something new. Picked up by a distributor and released in 2021, the film is currently available on most streaming platforms. Melissa's second film, Climbing into Life, details the inspiring life story of Dierdre Wolownick, the oldest woman to ascend El Capitan, who also happens to be the mother of famed free solo climber Alex Honnold. The film is currently making the film festival rounds. Melissa is a champion to show that it isn't too late for people over 60, particularly women to explore new pathways and make a profound impact on the world. It's such a great message to share, and she does it with an infectious energy as you'll find out in this episode.Melissa Daveymelissadavey.combeyondsixty.commelissa@melissadavey.comFacebook Beyond Sixty DocumentaryInstagram @beyond60project and @climbing_into_lifeBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

From an unhappy wife and lonely mother to the status of athlete later in life, Dierdre confronts fear and ageism and gains a wonderful new community in the outdoors.  At age 71 Dierdre pushes back against the societal norms that assume her retirement years will be spent slowing down. *** Don't miss out on new episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast that are released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! Todays episode is a truly inspiring conversation about conquering seemingly impossible physical challenges no matter how hold you are.   My guest is Dierdre Wolownick,  a accomplished musician, linguist,  inspirational speaker and author,  who also happens to the be mother of Alex Honold, featured  in the documentary Free Solo for his death defying rock climbing without using ropes. Dierdre started running marathons at 55, started rock climbing at 58 and at the age of 66 conquered the 3,000-foot-high rock face, El Capitan, in Yosemite National park. Not only did she accomplish this incredible feat she did it in record time.   Dierdre and I chat about her climbing journey and what it takes mentality and physically to accomplish such an incredible physical challenge. We discuss the role of courage, not being afraid to learn, how to manage the unknown an so much more.  What I loved bout this conversation is that the tips and strategies that Dierdre shares are so relevant and applicable to just about any ‘out of your comfort zone' pursuit.   I don't see scaling rock faces anywhere in my near future but I walked away from this conversation with so many great insights and lessons that I will be applying to many things in my own life.   I hope you enjoy this conversation as much I did. ———— Dierdre Wolonick is a professor of languages and has taught five foreign languages on three continents for 44 years. Her writing in books & magazines world-wide has won awards, and her independent publishing company produced several award-winners and international best sellers.   As a musician all her life, Dierdre founded and conducted the West Sacramento Community Orchestra, and plays in many community orchestras and smaller ensembles on flute, clarinet or piano / keyboard.  She just returned from a 3-country speaking tour in Europe, and in later 2023, the documentary about her life, “Climbing Into Life,” will be available at film festivals across the country.   Blog/Web page: dierdrew.us.       Instagram: dierdre_wolownick_honnold FB: dierdre wolownick-honnold Documentary:  https://www.facebook.com/climbingintolife/ https://www.instagram.com/climbing_into_life/

Originally aired April 26, 2019Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she's made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and began climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It's evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box. Have you ever thought that it was too late to achieve a goal? That being past 50 years old meant that certain things were out of your reach forever? This week on Pursue Your Spark, our guest, Dierdre Wolownick, tells us how we can truly achieve anything we put our mind to, even when we're older than 70.  4 Steps To Achieve Any Goal, No Matter Your Age Dierdre is an author, mother, professor, marathoner, and musician, speaks 8 languages, plays several instruments, and founded and conducted the West Sacramento Orchestra, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. She is also the oldest woman to climb Yosemite's El Capitan, the iconic 3,200-foot granite wall in Yosemite National Park. She broke her record after scaling the rock face when she was 66 and for a second time on her 70th birthday. What a legend! Despite what people think, life after 50 is still a life worth enjoying with fun and adventure. Dierdre shredded her fears and started climbing at 59! What is something you've been dreaming of doing but felt as if the time has passed? Whatever it is, take a page from Dierdre's book, and do it anyways by having the courage, journaling your dreams, getting rid of stifling beliefs, and doing the unexpected. Eliminate any thought or belief that keeps you in the box you have put yourself in. Three of these fears mentioned in the podcast relate to time, uncertainty, and age. What if I don't have enough time to pursue my spark after dealing with family duties? What if I am unsure about my dreams and desires or don't even know what goals I'd like to achieve? What if I truly am too old? Dierdre explains that you can always make time for what's important if you want it badly enough. She also encourages us to recall what made us happy as a child and go back to explore that passion. In doing so, we should embrace aging, as it is a natural part of life, and make the time to keep being exhilarated by the child-like activities we did when we were young. She has so much more advice to give us on this topic, but you should finish the podcast and then grab a copy of her book,  The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story. As you heard here, you will learn how to “…make friends with fear in all its forms” and catapult into your brave future, where all of your “crazy” goals are met, regardless of your age. Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking to the amazing Dierdre Wolownick about the sharp end of life. In part 2 of our conversation, Dierdre talks about her big climb up El Capitan and the journey of overcoming her fear to accomplish that feat at 66 and then again at 70 years old. “Only you know what you're capable of”, she says, “and you'll never know if you don't try it.” Dierdre has created a life after 65 that reflects her belief that age is irrelevant, that anybody can do anything by little baby steps. One of the challenges is to know yourself and block out the media's representation of aging, to have the courage to think outside of the box. She is passionate about developing the mindset of digging deep and recognizing that the battle is you against you. This episode challenges the typical idea of what an older woman can do. If you're looking for someone who is challenging the status quo, living an extraordinary life and facing down her fears after retirement, join us. Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking to the amazing Dierdre Wolownick about the sharp end of life. Dierdre is the mother of famed free solo climber Alex Honnold. In part one of our two part conversation Dierdre lays the groundwork of her own story of finding out what she was capable of by testing the beliefs she has about herself. As a mother of two extreme athletes, she has encouraged and watched her children achieve extraordinary things. In her own life she's been a writer, author, symphony orchestra conductor, linguist, traveler, professor and much more. This story brings us to her latest accomplishments of becoming a runner and a climber after the age of 60. Dierdre challenged not only the media view of women of a certain age but her own beliefs about what she “could” do. After a brief but seemingly insignificant interaction with her son about a one mile run she had just completed, she was faced with the idea that she could do more. If you can run one mile, you can run one and a half was all he said. This one minute exchange became the turning point to her life and unbeknownst to her, her future of becoming a rock climber. Tune in to hear the first [art of Dierdre's inspiring story of what one woman found herself capable of a little beyond midlife when others are winding down. At the age of sixty-six, Dierdre Wolownick became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the iconic 3,200-foot granite "big wall" in Yosemite National Park.* For her this wasn't just any climb. Yes, The Captain is perhaps the most prized big wall climbs in the world. It was in June that same year that Dierdre's son Alex Honnold stunned and terrified the world by climbing without ropes—a free solo assent—this vertical wall that rises one half mile out of the earth in Yosemite National Park. Alex is no stranger to making news for his death-defying ability to speed climb routes, without protection, that give other expert climbers nightmares. Dierdre's son is indeed a rock climber in a special club: He's still alive. Says Honnold's friend and rock climbing legend Jimmy Caldwell, "All the other free solo climbers in the world are dead." Add this all together and you get the media sensation of Honnold, a paradox that his friends and family know couldn't be more opposite of his aloof and down-to-earth personality. National Geographic's blockbuster documentary of Honnold's assent of the Freerider route of El Captain, which won 7 Emmy's and an Academy Award for best Documentary Feature in 2019. I speak with Alex's mom, Dierdre, to deconstruct the public's polarized reaction to her son's lifestyle and to talk about her book The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story, about her journey as a parent who joined her son on his adventure, pushing the limit's of what's possible.  Should we see Honnold's climbing as reckless? A sophisticated dance with passive-aggressive self-harm? Or does our strong emotional reaction to his mastery and success in this solitary sport say more about our own denial of the risks we take every day flying in airplanes, living with firearms, or any number of questionable health and dietary choices we make. Do we envy Alex's clarity and focus and lack his courage to squarely face our own limitations and accept our own mortality? **The YouTube version of this episode, has some really cool footage of Alex climbing in the intro** Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SoulOfLifeShow or Twitter: https://twitter.com/SoulofLifeShow Want to book Keith as a guest on your podcast? Wife and mother. Teacher and musician. Marathoner and rock climber. At 66, Dierdre Wolownick became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite--and in The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story, she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence. Dierdre grew up under the watchful eyes of a domineering mother and realized early on that her parents' plans for her future weren't what she wanted for herself. Later, what seemed like a storybook romance brought escape, with new experiences and eye-opening travel, but she quickly discovered that her husband was not the happy-go-lucky man he had first appeared. Adapting as best she could, Dierdre juggled work and raising two young children, encouraging them to be fearlessly confident. She noted with delight how her “little lady” Stasia took it upon herself to look out for her baby brother, and watched in amazement as Alex (Honnold of "Free Solo" fame) started climbing practically before he could crawl. After years of struggle in her marriage and her ultimate divorce, Dierdre found inspiration in her now-adult children's passions, as well as new depths within herself. At Stasia's urging, she took up running at age 54 and soon completed several marathons. Then at age 58, Alex led her on her first rock climbs. A world of friendship and support suddenly opened up to her within the climbing “tribe,” culminating in her record-setting ascent of El Cap with her son. From confused young wife and busy but lonely mother to confident middle-aged athlete, Dierdre brings the reader along as she finds new strength, happiness, and community in the outdoors--and a life of learning, acceptance, and spirit. If the name Dierdre Wolownick doesn't sound familiar to you, you aren't alone. Wolownick is Dierdre's maiden name, but she is indeed the mother of Alex Honnold, the greatest rock climber to ever grace the sport. While we do talk about Alex and his motivations, Dierdre's story is much deeper than merely being his mother, and she also has a much different origin story than most of our guests. Having grown up in a post World War II Polish immigrant family in New York City, she struggled to break the mold of what children, and particularly girls, were allowed to do. In her mid 20's, Wolownick made the decision to move to California, where she married and began a family. But the struggle continued, and she tells us, in both our conversation and her book "The Sharp End," that she longed for connection her entire life. Dierdre and I talk about her ultimate redemption, which she discovered through rock climbing and running. It was through these sports that she experienced a rebirth, but not until her mid 50's. Dierdre's tale is a beautiful one in which the phoenix does indeed rise, in her case up the proverbial walls of Yosemite Valley as the oldest woman to ever summit famed El Cap.

This week’s conversation is with Dierdre Wolownick, the mother of legendary adventure rock climber Alex Honnold. You may recognize him from this year’s Academy Award Winning film, Free Solo, where he became the first person to ever free-solo El Capitan in Yosemite.Alex was a previous guest on this podcast, episode 108.I wanted to speak with his mother Dierdre for a couple of reasons.First, Alex was one of the more challenging interviews I’ve ever had on this podcast.Everything just seemed so matter of fact to him.One thing I hope you’re noticing from listening to these conversations is how much one’s upbringing (their parenting structure and environment) dictate who they become and why they do what they do so I thought who better to have a follow up conversation with then Alex’s mother.Second of all, Dierdre’s own story is quite incredible.Inspired by her daughter, Stasia, Dierdre began long-distance running at the age of fifty-five, and she has since completed several marathons, as well as numerous half-marathons and other races. At fifty-eight, she took up rock climbing with her son, Alex, and at the age of sixty-six, she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the iconic 3,200-foot granite wall in Yosemite National Park.Dierdre’s award-winning writing has appeared in magazines, newspapers, and books worldwide, and she created a publishing company that sells internationally.aShe just published her first book, The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story, where she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence.I think you’ll be fascinated by this conversation.--------------Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. In some circles, Dierdre Wolownick is best known as Alex Honnold’s mom. But she is also the oldest woman to climb El Cap, an author, teacher, linguist, musician, marathon runner, and someone who continues to push her comfort zone. We talk to Dierdre about her new book The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story; what shaped her philosophy of parenting; how she’s become more courageous with age; and the importance of continuing to push past limits.TOPICS & TIMES:Growing up in a home with “old world” values (3:58)Dierdre’s philosophy of parenting (10:23)When family dynamics become very public (21:37)The importance of expanding our comfort zones (26:29)On the specialized languages of outdoor sports communities (32:40)On the “devastating absence of connection” (38:18)Book recommendations (42:55)Dierdre’s philosophy of life (47:15)What are you most passionate about currently? While you may not recognize her name, you'll likely recognize the name of her son – Alex Honnold. In the off chance you don’t know who Alex is, he’s the guy who free solo’d El Capitan and was featured in the movie Free Solo. I won’t go into any more detail than that but, if you haven’t already, you should see this Oscar-winning movie, Free Solo – and Dierdre is in the movie by the way. So, yeah, Dierdre is Alex’s mom. And that fact might be interesting right there. But Dierdre has her own interesting story to share. She’s a woman who speaks multiple languages and who only speaks French to her two children. Because she’s passionate about music and saw the need for it in her hometown, she founded an orchestra in West Sacramento, CA. She began running when she was in her mid-50’s after telling herself all her life that she was not a runner (sound familiar?). She’s the author of numerous books with another one coming out in May called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story. If all that wasn’t inspirational enough? She began climbing when she was 57-years-old so she could better understand what it was that her son was doing. And eventually Alex led her up El Capitan after free solo’ing it himself when Deirdre was 66. She has a lot more to do and figures she’ll need to live to at least 125 to accomplish these many things. Dierdre is a fascinating woman. She really lives by her own rules (I mean, how many parents do you know that only speak to their children in a foreign language?). And what living by your own rules means is that you can accomplish a great many things. I know you’ll be inspired by this conversation with Dierdre Wolownick. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she’s made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and became climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It’s evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box.
