The Episode in 60 Seconds Everybody knows that Brad Feld "wrote the book" on start-ups. But what does he have to say to growth-stage companies or mature companies? A lot. Brad takes us into the stories of companies he helped start that have grown and learned tough lessons along the way. The core of the interview explores: The call to always experiment and innovate. What tasks to keep doing so that you can keep learning. How to build communities with other businesses. You can't scale your company alone. Our Guest Brad Feld has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur since 1987. Prior to co-founding Foundry Group, he co-founded Mobius Venture Capital and, prior to that, founded Intensity Ventures. Brad is also a co-founder of Techstars. A writer and speaker on venture capital investing and entrepreneurship, Brad has written a number of books as part of the Startup Revolution series, and writes the blogs Feld Thoughts and Venture Deals. Brad holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Management Science from MIT. An art collector and long-distance runner, he has completed 25 marathons as part of his mission to finish a marathon in each of the 50 U.S. states. He lives in Boulder, Colorado. Show Notes John urges Brad to reflect on his career and contributions with this question, "If you were to sum up what others should know about you in a paragraph, what do you want others to know about you?" (2:04 and following) Your company is an endless series of small experiments. - Brad Feld We explore other questions including: How does a CMO of an established or growth-stage company learn from a successful startup in 2020? What has hindsight taught you about coaching and leading other companies? What was one thing you concept you got wrong in the first edition Venture Deals? What did you learn from your work with Uber? How does a company change when stagnant? How do you keep growing, or more importantly, scale (or scale again)? How would you advice a marketing leader to play an active role in growth? Regularly learn from the things that fail. - Brad Feld I think the best marketing leaders spend much more time with customers around the selling process and the product process than they do internally with their teams. - Brad Feld Brad's Latest Book: The Startup Community Way Many cities fail to nurture startup communities because governments, large corporations and universities are not effectively collaborating with entrepreneurs or with each other. A critical disconnect remains between the entrepreneurial mindset and those of many other organizations who wish to engage with and support entrepreneurship. There are structural reasons for this, but these obstacles can be overcome with appropriate focus, specific behaviors, and sustained practice. An explanatory guide for startup communities, The Startup Community Way is rooted in the theory of complex systems. The book establishes the systemic properties of entrepreneurial ecosystems and reveals why their complex nature leads people to make predictable mistakes. As complex systems, value creation occurs in startup communities primarily through the interaction of the parts - the people, organizations, resources, and conditions involved - not the parts themselves. This continual process of bottom-up interactions unfolds autonomously, producing value in novel and unexpected ways. Through these complex, emergent processes, the whole becomes greater and substantially different than what the parts alone could produce.

Maybe you retreat to a room alone for a few minutes. Have John 15:5 written out and ready to reflect on whenever you have a tough day. We know how we are supposed to answer this question: Is Jesus enough? Of course he is! But it’s one thing to make a sweeping declaration of surrender, saying we’ll give him our very lives…but what about when our comfortable and familiar routines are interrupted? In today’s episode, we’ll consider where we’re truly looking for life, and we’ll hear Jesus’ invitation to us that can change everything.Show Notes:John 4:10, 13This week’s practice:Take some time to read the story we talked about today in John 4: 1-26 and ask yourself: What are the wells that YOU are going to for life? As you search your heart in the presence of Jesus, my prayer is that he would remind you that he is the true source of life and joy and purpose, and that even if life never looks the same again, we don’t have to be afraid, and we can have hope because of him.More Resources:For more resources to help you connect with God in the chaos of motherhood, visit http://www.lindsaysterchi.com/free/. When I walk on stage to give a keynote, I'm often introduced "expected to die, now teaching others to truly live, John O’Leary.” Today, I welcome 19-year-old John Smith who just 5 years ago fell into an icy lake, spent 15 minutes trapped below the ice and did not take a breath for over an hour. He was declared dead; yet he is alive and fully recovered today. His miraculous story was recently featured in the major film Breakthrough and today he shares it with us. If you’re struggling to make sense of your suffering, have lost your personal faith or have stopped believing in miracles, this episode is for you. SHOW NOTES: John was adopted at 5 months old from Mixco, Guatemala. January 19, 2015: John + two friends are playing on a lake when the ice broke. One self-rescued, the other was rescued by emergency personnel. With his life flashing before his eyes, John realized he was going to die. Firefighter Tommy Shine heard a voice, directing him exactly to John's location, pulling him up after being underwater for 15 minutes. The world-renowned doctors spent over an hour doing everything medically + scientifically possible to bring him back to life. John's mother came to pray over his body, the atmosphere + physical temperate in the room the changed. The moment she began to pray, every apparatus on him turned on. Sixteen days later, John left the hospital with no lingering medical issues. With miracles, there are a lot of skeptics but there is science to back up this miracle. DeVon Franklin, the producer of Breakthrough, encouraged John to "stay humble and stay hungry." "God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called." "By the time die, how many people can I influence to take to heaven with me?" - John's pastor Jason Noble inspires him to share his story to inspire others. John's miracle has called him to study becoming a pastor at North Central University this fall. Follow John on Instagram at @JohnASmith25. Breakthrough is now available on DVD and digital download. Get it here. Get a copy of Joyce Smith's book Breakthrough here. John Smith mentions watching a video about my story. Watch it here. "When excluded from activities, I felt like it was my fault. This is something not only children internalize, but that adults do too." "I couldn't understand what I was going through. That pushed me to find other means to express myself." "Belonging is a basic human need." I had good grades, good manners. I convinced myself that settling for that was enough. There's no progressing in life if you don't come to terms with your story. Even the strongest of us go through moments where we feel let down or taking advantage of. Just to visualize it: These mountains you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb. I gives me so much power. I must believe in myself before I expect anyone else to believe in me. I must raise my own voice and not expect someone to fight for me. To get heard, I was the one who had to raise my voice. It was the first time I wrote my feelings out on paper. It was weird at first... unfamiliar. I found myself going back to it day after day. It became the home that I was searching for because nobody was telling me that I was being too sensitive or that I shouldn't be feeling that way." "They didn't want to be here, but felt like they had to be grateful. They felt out of place and made to feel that they were not good enough." Najwa said of her Libyan students in Canada. "I started to write to help them feel empowered. I thought I was writing for them, but I was writing to heal my 16 year old self. That was a pivotal moment." If you enjoyed Najwa's story of advocacy, owning your story and using your voice, check out Ep. #82 with Christine Caine. NAJWA ZEBIAN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Prophet. I love hat it talks about elements of love and life and purpose and friendship and that it's timeless. It was written decades ago and if I were to read it in 2000 years, it would still make sense. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Innocence. When I was young I used to take everything at face value. I wouldn't hesitate to smile. If I saw someone struggling, I'd get emotional and try to help them. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My journal. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My grandma. I lived with her and I remember so many lessons that she taught me as a child. She would tell me old stories of going through the war and what she learned about life. I never got a chance to give her a proper good bye. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? I need to put myself first in order to be able to give to others. When I feel depleted, it's because I didn't honor my boundaries. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Forgive yourself for being hard on yourself and tying your happiness to whether or not people welcomed you into their lives. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Truly lived and owned her own story.  *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday! As seen on EWTN, John Finch has launched into a ministry of bringing to light The Father Effect. The father wound is no small topic and we here in the trenches feel like it is such an important one.  This interview with John Finch is very powerful and we hope it reaches out to all who need to hear it, men and women. Many people are wounded and hurting dearly but not really sure what is at the root of that pain. We are all wounded on some level because of some one and there is only One that can provide complete healing, Jesus Christ. We are God’s children and He sent the Word Incarnate to bring about our healing and as He has promised over and over in Scripture that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Please consider supporting our Podcast Our Guest:   John Finch,  grew up the youngest of 3 boys in a suburb of Dallas where he lost his father to suicide at age 11. As a young man, John did anything he could to avoid confronting the wounds he suffered as a result of being fatherless. His craving for affirmation from a father who was not there to provide it, led him to seek that affirmation from the world in many unhealthy ways. In an attempt to find value as a man, he created a false persona that left him completely unfulfilled. His life was based on the pursuit of money in order to prove his success and he became a social alcoholic as he strived to be the life of every party and gain the attention of those around him. It was only when John realized and dealt with the unresolved issues of his father wound that he was able to become truly fulfilled. On April 20th, 2009, he finally came face to face with the issues that drove him to seek approval from a father who was not there to give it to him. By forgiving his father and recognizing what it truly means to be a man by God’s standard, he became a new man, husband and father. John seeks to break down the barriers that prevent men and women from addressing deep rooted anger and hurt from the wounds they have suffered in this life by candidly and openly sharing his story, his failings, and his path to a new way of life. John’s mission is to educate, encourage and equip men to become the fathers they were created to be, and to help men walk in daily awareness of their significant and lifelong influence as fathers. Through The Father Effect Movie, John shares stories and messages that will move viewers to a new awareness about the everlasting impact of fathers and the importance of forgiveness and openness in the relationships of this world. John has been married for 23 years. has three daughters and lives in Denton, Texas. He is the founder of The Perfect Father Ministries Inc, a 501(c) non-profit and EncouragingDads.com, a community of people from all of the world who share short stories to encourage dads. John’s new book, The Father Effect, Based on the feature film of the same name, THE FATHER EFFECT is a must-read for the millions of men and women who have lost their fathers through divorce, death, or disinterest. John Finch always struggled after his father committed suicide when he was eleven, but it wasn’t until he was raising his own three daughters that he truly understood their futures relied on his coming to terms with his difficult past. To move forward, he needed to forgive both his father for choosing to leave, and himself for not being the best father he could be. This journey led to THE FATHER EFFECT, a book containing practical help for anyone, man or woman, with a deep father wound from losing a dad through divorce, death, or disinterest. Through positive lessons on forgiveness and approachable advice on how to change your legacy as a parent, partner, and person, THE FATHER EFFECT is the ultimate healing tool for anyone who has suffered the absence of a dad.     john@thefathereffect.com www.TheFatherEffect.com EncouragingDads.com The Father Effect YouTube Channel The Father Effect GodTube Channel Facebook – The Father Effect Movie Twitter – @johnpfinch https://youtu.be/_iZnFPXVJ60   Show Notes: John’s new book – The Father Effect Healing the Masculine Soul by Gordon Dalbey Father’s online community EncouragingDads.com Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin 1690  Inside EWTN article on The Father Effect EWTN Episode of Take 2 with Jerry and Debbie Interview with John Finch   Call to Action –  How can we support our husbands and other men in our lives in their roles as a father and also in their role as a son. First, go watch the YouTube video of the short film.  Affirm our spouses, sons, or any other man in our life suffering through a father wound.  Also for those not married or women who feel they are wounded, go watch the film and ask the Lord to reveal to them any father wound that they may be carrying themselves. We do this so that God may start a mighty work of healing and restoration in our lives. Scripture –   “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you.” 6 Hence we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13: 5-6 Saint Quote – “Sometimes the only way the good Lord can get into some hearts is to break them.” –Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Links: jmacvo.com www.dogandponystudios.net Show Notes: John started as a post audio engineer in the 1980s in Detroit working on car commercials He's been working in Las Vegas for the last 20 years for clients including MGM resorts. More and more of John's time is spent networking and chasing leads as competition in his industry increases. The key to building a client base is to find common ground and establish a relationship. He performs as the lead in Paul Sating's first season of Subject: Found. He will have a role in season 2, and will be doing sound design for it. They were nominated for a Parsec award. He's also appeared on an episode of John Grills's podcast Creepy. John prefers recording his own sound to using prerecorded audio. If you want to start doing your own sound, just get a recorder and start recording sound. Pay more attention. Try and emulate high quality work. Include sound in a soundscape as it serves the story. It's the subtle details that draw you into the story. Gimlet's Homecoming is an audiodrama that impressed John with its sound design. Quality is only half the work; you have to market yourself. Set aside time to do so. If you want to commission work from Dog and Pony Show, contact them through the website They do foley, they do sound design for independent movies. Use them to outsource some of your production to focus on other aspects of your production. Complex sound design is an untapped niche in the audiobook world, especially when it comes to childrens' books. John recommends the Sure MV88 microphone.
