On April 8, 2024, a full solar eclipse will make is way across North America from Texas to the Northeast. It'll cross the Mississippi River south of St. Louis. Much of southeast Missouri and all of southern Illinois will be in the path of totality, with some places experiencing the eclipse for just over four minutes, including Trail of Tears State Park just north of Cape Girardeau. Many of these places were in the path of another total eclipse just 7 years ago. In this episode, I talked with Alison Dubbert from Missouri State Parks and Cory Jobe from Great Rivers and Routes in Alton, Illinois. We gave an overview of the places that will have a good view of the total eclipse in Missouri and Illinois, with an emphasis on public lands, and some of the special events going on to celebrate it. Accommodations will be hard to come by in the eclipse zone if you haven't booked a place yet, so we offered some tips about where you should look. We have some tips for daytrippers, too, and a few thoughts on how to deal with the expected crowds. (Hint: Be patient.) We also talked about some of the lessons learned from 2017, when crowds got very big in many places. In the Mississippi Minute, I share a few memories about viewing the eclipse in 2017.

Basic #1: Want to lead? Start by serving...Ever heard the saying “We rise by lifting others?” Servant leadership is a management philosophy founded by Robert Greenleaf who teaches that a leader's role is to serve. This is vastly different from traditional leadership where the main focus is the success of the company. A servant leader shares power; puts the needs of the employees first and develops their people for success.Servant leadership is a philosophy Jerry believes in strongly. “It means understanding what employees need and want to achieve, and then giving them tools and resources to meet (their own) performance expectations,” he explains. Another pillar of the philosophy is sharing power. Jerry shares that when starting out in any new role, he would take frontline staff or team leaders into his exec level meetings. “It's about sharing opportunities for creating and implementing new ideas across the business. This creates a culture where every voice is valued…”Basic #2: Want great customer experience? Work on your employee experienceTo Jerry, the most important thing a manager can focus on is their team.“Imagine you've had a bad day. And now you have to get on the phone and talk to a customer – and they're mad. You're not feeling good. How are you going to deliver in that kind of mindset? Now imagine your manager supports you and says ‘I understand, take a couple of minutes, get some coffee, just relax'...”Making sure they have the answers they need by the end of each day is Jerry's highest priority because at the end of the day, customer experience begins and ends with employee experience...“I know there will be emails from business partners and clients, but I make sure that I answer any kind of questions from my frontline employees, my supervisors, or my leaders – every day, no matter what.”Basic #3: Want to hold on tight to quality? You'll need to know when to let go!“When your new manager tells you that your team has a case backlog of four months – or over 40,000 cases – you might want to turn around and run…but there is another way. It's a big call, and some people in the business might question your tactics, but sometimes you just gotta let it go!” explains Jerry. And that's exactly what he did, announcing to his discouraged teams that “We're just going to forget those. We're going to refine our processes and we're going to get the right technology in place. We're not going to win any customer service points by bringing up old service complaints anyway!”Today, the team responds to most cases in the moment, in real time, something that wouldn't have happened if Jerry hadn't cleared a four month backlog for a fresh start.Basic #4: Want to build connections? Digital isn't (always) the answer...Jerry considers the most important attributes for frontline teams to be compassion, empathy and an ability to listen. “One of the industry's biggest challenges is how technology is being incorporated into customer experience,” believes Jerry, cautioning that companies who rely on technology alone are doomed to fail. “We all love to throw technology out there as the answer. But at the end of the day, customer experience is about humanity. It's about communication and connecting. It doesn't matter how we connect – through an email or text, or on the phone – it's about how you create real connection in the digital space and outside of it...”One of Jerry's favourite ‘connections' was how 7-eleven supported babies born on July 11th; or even 11 minutes past 7. Every year, the company would send packages to random families of babies born on that day; as well as core supplies to hospitals to keep new mums and nurses going – like onesies, gifts and a coffee bar for the nurses. “On one occasion, the company even pledged a college fund for one of those babies!”Basic #5: Want brand loyalty? Focus on quality, not quantity! To Jerry, building brand loyalty is simple: “You have to provide a service and meet the customer's expectations.” The complication comes when you consider that not all customers have the same expectation. So how do you set a bar – and how do you raise it so high that customers would have a 7-eleven themed wedding, for example? (Hint: Be sure to tune in to the podcast to hear the full story.)“It's got to be tailored to the individual. And that's what's hard about customer experience because everybody's expectations are different. You have to find the line between what's acceptable and not acceptable, and then make sure the experience you provide is always above the ‘acceptable' range.”Jerry also shares the infamous ‘2 hour 35 minute' call to Zappos story which exemplifies how using the right metrics can drive the right behaviours that build customer loyalty. In this case, tracking call quality, not quantity, but it's a great reminder of how frontline experience can be hindered without the right focus…“You need to cut through the red tape of financial gains metrics to prioritise customer experience. That builds loyalty and that's where you're going to build profitability.”Let's recap Jerry's top five customer service basics:Put your ego aside and practice ‘servant leadership'Work on providing an awesome employee experienceKnow when to start afresh with systems and processesMake building lasting connections on and offline a top priorityKeep your focus on customers; not metrics

What a beautiful, flowing, value packed, full of gold and silver and everything in between conversation with Karina. I simply can not acknowledge all the goodness! If you love Musical Theatre, are IN Musical Theatre or wish to make it a career path, this is the episode for you.If you are inspired and touched by notions such as we are all Earth Humans, borrowing things and time and even our own experiences here in this life time, then this episode is for you. If you want to feel who is the wonderfully talented on stage, and equally real and impactful off stage HUMAN that is Karina, this is the episode for you. We talk audition process and what best serves us and what does not. Hint - Be the authentically, unique YOU every time. We talk getting the part, and how perfect bliss turns quickly to panic as that adventure then begins. We love and gush all over Cats and I get a chocolate craving talking about winning the Golden Ticket. I admit I want to wear a Tiara every day just because and Karina admits she secretly adored being the world's biggest brat. We dive into the theatre's secret ingredient of deep cast love and I share my own theory on that phenomenon. We both get goose bumps over the reverence that can be conjured within a cast for each other and for the creation of something truly timeless and soul moving. I stalked Karina's Instagram for this one and it shows. I am proud to say that I know all about her love affair with New York (you should see the stars projecting from her eyes as she speaks of it), her Kit Kat sponsorship that surely must be on the way, her Plan B Tik Tok career and most importantly, her daily practice of gratitude, grounding, humour and being present in the here and now. Powerful stuff. Karina's emphasis on the importance of the little things, the truth of there being place for all of us (Yes you do Westside Story), and her mission to bring eco friendly accountability to theatres in Australia is admirable and a definite "watch this space". Her desire to see more representation and gender neutrality within the Industry is another "I know she will make change" in this camp note to make. Karina and I both profess our no fear attitudes to lemons and our fierce capacity to make some serious lemonade. Queens. There is a warming celebration of the artist and the artist's arena is this episode that every performer will recognise and relish in. For this very reason, every artist will also feel the pain in the current global climate of an Art's traumatising shutdown. Karina's message of hope? Reach out and reach together, connected and as one. Remember who you are, and why we do what we do. We recorded this on a full moon and it was so fitting to read this Cats reference and Instagram post from Karina, "And if you're ever feeling lonely just look at the moon. Someone, somewhere, is looking at it too." We are in this together my artist friends, and this too shall pass. Let us have the conversations, share the real stories, and know none of this is meant to be gone at alone. Pandemic or no pandemic. The performing artist's journey is an intense, struggle fuelled, overwhelming, yet oh so magical choreography... best done with a collective force field. Karina embodies the Dancer's Circle mantra - Human first, Dancer second and I am still buzzing from connecting and sharing with this incredible and light filled fellow performing soul. Endlessly grateful.

Dr. Josh Satterlee, DC talks to Dr. Justin Trosclair DC on A Doctor's Perspective Podcast. Make a clinic gym hybrid your next profitable expansion. Dr. Josh Satterlee goes through the why, how much square feet, fees, equipment, hiring, special certifications, class sizes and much more. You got them pain free, let's keep them with exercise. He has a sad yet interesting story on how he went from engineering and biomechanics to becoming a chiropractor. We discuss his origin story and the evolution of the clinic gym hybrid going from 800 sq ft with two doctors to 4990 sq ft (3000 of it gym space). His first hire to expand services was actually an athletic trainer and not another doctor, hear why. Plus when you hire a bunch of part timers for the gym, he needed a general manager, hear why again. Dr. Satterlee is (TPI) Titleist Performance Institute Certified and then Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) super certified and has been teaching SFMA for many years now. What courses should we take if we want to get in to the clinic gym hybrid?    HINT: Be clear on what joint we are isolating. The ‘mode' of exercise (kettle bells vs bands vs whatever) doesn't matter as much as isolating the joint and motion you are trying to repair. The patient has gotten better and they are looking at you doctor for the next step. The clinic gym model gives you an add on service that the patient already is hinting at. They got pain free, now I want to keep it that way. Cam a small space halt implantation? Can we just do bands, balls, kettle bells, pilates, McGill 3 type stuff etc or do we need high tech big machines? BONUS: on amazon there is a mesh bag with a jump rope, pull up band, mini bands, floor sliders and you would want a 12 inch foam roller and you could get the clinic gym started. Motion in a joint is key to a healthy joint. Another reason to consider the clinic gym model is because often you find a patient is back at a gym again or work etc and 7 weeks later they are back in the office because of a re-injury. Why not have supervised classes (you not teaching them) to keep them injury free? Does the trainer babysit each person? Also, the number reason why Dr. Josh advocates for groups and not 1 on 1… it's not money. The ideal situation is 4 people and 1 trainer for one hour. Every exercise has a few steps to make it easier and harder. How difficult are the sales part ... because cities have gyms down the street. You can also recommend a 4 week group class as an add on during their initial report of findings. Some will sign up before they are out of pain. Also an option is doing a 21 day challenge or a 6 week weight loss challenge. Remember: We build these clinic gyms based on your Medical Expertise, not on the size of your space or equipment in it. Groups build dynamics that keep them coming for more. Dr. Satterlee goes over who to hire and what to pay and it will surprise you just how affordable it is to implement this program.  Reasons to transition into the gym model which can include less paperwork and spreading the liability around.  Dr Josh even opens up about his poor communication in family dynamics and how with effort he was able to turn his marriage around. “How The Best Leaders Insure A Healthy Staff Culture So you’re a leader. It’s no accident. It’s just natural. Well, for most people S. I. McMillen, in his book None of These Diseases.  He tells a story of a young woman who wanted to go to college, but her heart sank when she read the question on the application blank that asked, “Are you a leader?” Being both honest and conscientious, she wrote, “No,” and returned the application, expecting the worst. To her surprise, she received this letter from the college:  “Dear Applicant: A study of the application forms reveals that this year our college will have 1,452 new leaders. We are accepting you because we feel it is imperative that they have at least one follower.” They assume responsibility as the greatest influencer of staff culture. McDonald’s “McDonald’s vision is to be the world’s best quick service restaurant experience. Being the best means providing outstanding quality, service, cleanliness, and value, so that we make every customer in every restaurant smile.” (No comment) #7 most recognizable logo worldwide Amazon’s vision is to be earth’s most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.” Walmart To help people save money so they can live better. PepsiCo “PepsiCo’s responsibility is to continually improve all aspects of the world in which we operate – environment, social, economic – creating a better tomorrow than today. Here’s my favorite one. For a time, this was Nike’s vision statement. Crush Reebok. 2. They have mastered self governance. Though their behavior is not fueled as much by personal discipline as an inside out approach. It’s genuine. They have learned self control. John Wooden led the UCLA Bruins to 10 NCAA men’s basketball championships in 12 years.   The most any other coach has won is 4 championships. John Wooden coached hundreds of great players, many of which became all Americans and went on to play in the NBA.   He taught them how to shoot and play defense and rebound.  He poured thousands of hours into these talented young men.  But he always started with one simple lesson.  Every year when he gathered his troops for the first time, he started with this lesson. He taught his players how to put on their socks. John Wooden wasn’t known for his fiery half time speeches.  He wasn’t known for his last second play calling.  He didn’t pace the sidelines and yell and scream at his players to get them motivated.  Most of the time he just sat there with a rolled up program in his hand.  He wasn’t known for any of those things, but he was legendary in his preparation. 3. They are under the influence of The Holy Spirit. You cannot wring enough life or meaning out of secular accomplishment to satisfy your soul. The hole you are trying to fill has an eternal and spiritual dimension that only matters of eternity and spirituality can satisfy. This is why it is imperative that you discover and participate in God’s multifaceted vision for your life. It is what you were made for. Andy Stanley. 4. They make others feel valued. By recognizing the unique contribution of each person privately (and publicly) they fuel morale and a spirit of appreciation. Hint: Be specific with your compliments rather than a passing “good job” comment. As I was writing this message I pulled out a book written by a friend of mine. Liberating Ministry from The Success Syndrome. His name is Kent Hughes and he has written over 20 books. He just recently retired. This book is about his biggest failure. He planted a church over 30 years ago it just beat him up. That little church that he considered a failure was the church I was going to when God got a hold of my life. Kent was a huge encouragement to me. I’ll always remember one moment in particular. I was with my parents and Kent put his hand on my shoulder and said, “This kids going to grow up and be a pastor someday.” I’ll never forgive him for that. My elder board and I read a book this last year that I highly recommend.  It’s called The Dream Manager,  Matthew Kelly.  Charlie wanted to climb Half Dome at Yosemite. We all called him from church I spent my life trying to get people to notice me on the stage. Now I’m trying to be the stage. 5. They honor their staff by paying careful attention to how sticky matters are handled. In difficult situations they take time to separate the person from the behavior. Even when someone is terminated, it can be done in an honorable way where they feel valued as a person rather than disposed of like a broken tool. The definitive leadership diagnostic tool is finally available. Its elegant simplicity is characteristic of pure science at its finest. To put it in lay terms, this theory maintains that all human beings fit into one of three basic leadership types as represented by this photo. There are three types of leader: the Moe personality type, the Larry personality type, or the Curly personality type. The Moe type is the person with a high need to be in charge. General Patton and Napoleon were Moes. All books with the words vision or leadership in the title are written by Moes. All popes are Moes. The Larry type is a person who more or less hangs around waiting for Moe to disappear so he can take over. A “rising Moe.” as it were. Larrys often suffer from “delusion of Moe-ness.” All TV or radio talk show second bananas are Larrys. This is why they are so agreeable. The Curly type doesn’t have a clue. True Curly types will never be anything but Curly types, and could not even tell you the difference between Moe and Larry perhaps due to repeated eye gouges and head slaps and blows from the occasional falling anvil. The only really confusing part of this test is that the Stooge with curly hair is called Larry, while the Stooge called Curly had a crew cut with no curls at all. Don’t let this minor flaw deter you or influence your own personal hair style. Of course, some of you have been in abusive situations where your stooge has not been valued. You may be interested in a book coming out this fall: Releasing Your Inner Stooge. And if you’re not happy with your particular stooge, just remember: It could be worse.
