This week on DOPEY! We welcome Philly Junky, Artist, Book and Game Designer Dave Marques! We start reading the Jenni Spotify comments. Play Allison voicemail (paramedic blowjob in ambulance post-Christian rehab relapse), Miles voicemail (veins wrecked by crack run, imaging lab vein scan horror, switched to sniffing/smoking/femoral). Reads Dana email (using while listening to dopey, Philly trank/xylazine hell, 10-year heroin/PCP run, funny bad gas station robbery story). Dave connects deeply, offers help (Dopey Nation socials/Zoom, 25 meetings/week), we stress that recovery is doable. Dave Marquez (Philly artist, inventor of Relapse vs Recovery game/activity book, ~10 years sober 6/9/16). Dave Marquez interview highlights (starts ~27:52): Early life/family addiction — Kindergarten stealing at Nativity school, mom prison check fraud/coke/heroin, dad PCP/meth/LSD chemist (horse dewormer contract, biker gang supplier), Moonies kidnapping half-brother Jesse, parents split kids no custody, dad took Dave after mom prison/grandma rehab/aunt binge, dad sober then full alcoholic (nice sloppy drunk, Eagles yelling). Teen years/drugs — Pot/PCP 7th grade (~12), "love boat" blunts, rainy days romance, graffiti start 97–98 (SEV/Shiva tag), stabbed kid 8th grade (utility cutter), juvie Pittsburgh 18 months (school + D&A program, "yes them" to get out). High school fall — Ankle bracelet 9th grade, friend OD heroin, vice principal fight on PCP, multiple expulsions ($80k graffiti damage), umpiring/job purpose lost to girl/drugs. Adult spiral — Daughter born 2004, dad death 2007 heart attack (no 911 to save ambulance cost), inherited $30k → oxy dealer → heroin, escort driving (pinching bags, chaos), scams (Dave & Buster's tickets, college copper theft, steak return scam with mom, fake bills), lost everything, daughter's mom left after needles found. Jail/fentanyl era — Multiple arrests (shoplifting, attempted carjacking hiding in dryer), fentanyl OD in jail (snorted 2 bags, turned purple, lawyer visit saved him, pre-Narcan), worst detox Montgomery County (puking bile, shitting bunk, Ativan shower), 3 weeks hole (disoriented, makeshift chess/solitaire). Bottom & recovery — Turned down free bag in Gen Pop (first "no" in 20 years), parole home, 3 months clean no detox spot, self-made meeting papers judge accepted, mom helped (attic, toiletries), reconnected daughter at 16–18, good relationship now. Sober life/art — Car painting job via Ray (wash → prep), murals/barber shops, enamel pins/coloring books, Relapse vs Recovery game (card game from New Year's inspiration, recovery/12-step jargon humor, Instagram @relapsevsrecoverygame, gamecrafter.com, Amazon/Meta struggles drug content). Ends grateful for purpose/creativity in sobriety, teases Patreon video game play. Developers behind a proposed 130-acre data center on the southwest side of Marion County secured preliminary approval Thursday. Indiana voters will still have the same number of early voting days after a bill that would have reduced days failed to receive a necessary vote. Governor Mike Braun quickly signed legislation this afternoon to bring the Chicago Bears to Indiana shortly after the Indiana Senate gave its final approval 45 to 4. Shenzhen-based Transsion Holdings is now a massive Chinese technology company that few people outside of Africa and certain parts of Asia have heard of. Even in China, the brand, now the world's 5th-largest mobile phone producer, remains largely unknown. Transsion gained notoriety after it entered the African market in 2006. Back then, the world's largest phone brands all but ignored African consumers, selling low-end, late-model devices designed primarily for Western and Asian consumers. The Chinese company saw an opportunity and tweaked the software on its phones to optimize photos for darker skin tones, and added a suite of features like dual SIM cards, dustproofing, and longer battery life to sell sub-$100 phones to Africa's booming youth market. That formula worked, and the company's three brands, Tecno, Infinix, and iTel, have dominated the market for more than a decade. But little is known about how Transsion achieved its success in Africa. Lu Miao, an assistant professor at Lingnan University in Hong Kong, joins Eric & Cobus to lay out the company's strategy and why it was so effective in a market that others largely ignored. Gabriela Nguyen helps people break their overreliance on cell phones and social media to venture offline and become self-empowered again. With over 40% of American social media users ages 18 - 22 feeling addicted and 50% of British teens reporting the same signs, she has her work cut out for her. And she's doing it all through her company, Appstinence, and their 5 D process: decrease, deactivate, deflect, downgrade, and depart. Gabriela isn't just texting the text (see what we did there?), she's walking the walk having been an enthusiastic social media user herself, she now has what she calls a 'dumb' phone (not a smart phone - get it?). “It's not a utopian fantasy of like, ‘Oh, if only I could run out into the woods and leave all my technology behind and get off social media and reinvent myself,' she says, "It's something that people are actually doing.” We talk about how her dad tossed the family TV when she was a child, what it feels like to connect with others on a human level and not through our phones, and what she is saying yes to in 2026 (remember, SAY YES is our motto for the year). On this week's Political Breakfast, strategists Tharon Johnson and Brian Robinson, along with prominent lawmakers like Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, traveled to Sea Island for a state Department of Natural Resources fundraiser. However, the talk of the benefit was the recent FBI raid in Fulton County, and the seizure of 2020 election records. Republicans like Raffensperger are breaking their silence on the issue, urging the GOP to stop trying to "rerun" President Donald Trump's 2020 election grievances. Trump has repeatedly insisted the 2020 election was stolen, despite multiple recounts and audits confirming his loss to former President Joe Biden. Plus, legislation to ban phones and other electronic devices in Georgia public high schools is underway at the Gold Dome this week. A vehicle tracked through neighborhood surveillance footage. A firearm allegedly matched through a national database. She explains NIBIN ballistics methodology, how multi-jurisdictional investigations function in practice, and why the indictment's firearm suppressor allegation may be the most damning evidence of premeditation prosecutors have. This is how law enforcement builds a double murder case from digital breadcrumbs and forensic science.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #TrueCrimeToday #FBI #NIBINBallistics #ColumbusOhio #DoubleHomicide #JenniferCoffindaffer #TrueCrimeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
