Starting out in Ohio, musician Ryan Bueter has toured with a who's who of artists before starting 'The Killer Dueling Pianos'. Ryan moved to California in 2005. He has been performing and hiring musicians for his dueling pianos company since 2010. He worked hard, hustled, learned the business, networked and learned the financial end of the entertainment industry to help scale his business to what it is now.The Killer Dueling Pianos are constantly busy performing all over the country at corporate events, resorts and private parties. 80% of their business is in California. Because of AB5, it has limited his ability to book events for himself and his performers in California. He agrees that the bill was carelessly written and is too broad in it's coverage. Ryan has invested a large amount of time and money into building his brand in California which restricts him from moving away. His story is very similar to many musicians who live in the state. Many don't find it practical to leave. His hope is that the law is repealed and the state can go back to the way it was for all musicians, freelancers and independent contractors."Be Professional with everything you do. If you want people to take you seriously, show them that you can manage without them." Sheryl Schane is a San Diego based, certified meeting and convention planner, with over 25 years in the Hospitality and Tourism industry. Sheryl’s work includes planning, coordinating and managing onsite operations for several industries: Medical, Building, Technology, Insurance, Investment Banking, Financial Services and professional sports. We continue our week long conversations with California based freelancers and musicians who are being drastically affected with California law AB5. In this insightful conversation, Sheryl shares a wealth of information about AB5, explains the factors needed to qualify for an exception, maybe, the connection to the Dynamex decision, it's affect on her industry and others, her thoughts on a possible underground economy because of it and much more. The Impact AB5 is having on Sheryl and the entire Meeting and Event Planning Profession is significant. Colleagues have received notices from agencies or longtime clients making a tough call to no longer contract with CA based independent meeting planners because of AB5. Instead, these agencies and clients have chosen to hire our colleagues from neighboring states to manage the meeting operations here in California because they are not willing to deal with the risks of AB5. This is very sad and disturbing. An unintended consequence of what is happening to us and so many other professions. The ripple effects of AB5 are astounding. This is the first episode in a series that will feature guests discussing the new law in California, AB5. AB5 has disrupted the lives of many California based freelancers, independent contractors and especially freelance musicians. Many individuals and businesses have moved out of state or shut down completely because of this law. Although some groups were able to get exceptions, the majority of independent entrepreneurs still struggle to understand the laws language and how it applies to them. There is also a great amount of 'collateral damage', meaning those who depend on the services of independent contractors and freelancers can no longer get them without expensive legal maneuvers.Karen Anderson is the founder and administrator of the Facebook group Freelancers Against AB5. A gathering place for information about the law, stories from those affected and how to get involved in it's repeal.Karen is a third-generation Southern Californian who divides her time between Hawaii and California. With a 25-year career as a freelance writer, editor and photographer, Karen specializes in homes, interior design, architecture, food, travel and feature stories for print publications in Hawaii and California.
