Memphis City Councilman Frank Colvett said on Memphis Morning News, he's not sure if JB Smiley didn't read the U of M Auxiliary charter before he presented a resolution demanding seats on the board. Simply put- there are no additional seats. This is part of the city council's attempt to push back on Mayor Strickland's plan to transfer Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium to the University of Memphis. Council members showed dissatisfaction that the mayor didn't present it to them before going public. The council's animus towards the handling of the plan, could put the $50 million gift by the Smith family, in jeopardy.Support the show: https://www.newstalk989.com/personalities/memphis-morning-news/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Tigers on Tap Episode 12. In this episode, Trey and TJ review the Tigers' gritty 24-3 win over Temple in Week 5 and preview the upcoming matchup against pre-season AAC favorite, Houston Cougars. Houston was ranked in the Top 25 coming into the year, but comes into the game against the Tigers with a 2-3 record. The Tigers are favored to win the game on Friday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. In the first segment, TJ and Trey review the Temple game. For the second straight game, the Tigers' offense struggled to maintain any sustained momentum. For the first time in a long time, the Tigers went into halftime with zero points on the board. The Tigers' defense played inspired and kept Temple out of the endzone the entire game. They also forced three more turnovers continuing the trend of forcing opponents' turnovers and protecting the ball themselves. The Tigers are second in the nation in turnover margin at +9 on the season. TJ and Trey talk about the issues the offense is having. What are the trends they see that concern them? How can the Tigers fix the offensive woes? In the second segment, TJ and Trey preview the upcoming Week 6 game against the Houston Cougars. Houston and Memphis have faced off numerous times in the AAC, and all that will come to an end this year as Houston exits the AAC and moves to the Big 12. The Tigers come into this game on a four game winning streak, but the next three games will be the toughest stretch during their 2022 season. Houston has underwhelmed this year so far after being picked to win the AAC conference this year. They come in at 2-3 on the year, 0-1 in the AAC. TJ and Trey discuss the matchups they are most interested in seeing during this game. Houston lost their most talented defensive lineman at the beginning of the year, but still boast a fast and aggressive defensive front seven. The Tigers have struggled on the offensive line to protect Seth Henigan and open up holes for the run game. Trey and TJ discuss the Tigers' evolving offensive strategy and what types of wide receiver routes would be effective to stifle the Houston defense. Trey and TJ are both concerned with how the Tigers' secondary will be able to stop Nathaniel "Tank" Dell Jr, the prolific Houston wide receiver. Clayton Tune, the starting quarterback for Houston, has also proven himself to be a capable runner this year, and TJ and Trey discuss how the Tigers' defense needs to shore up their strategy against a quarterback who can be a dual threat. TJ predicts the Tigers will win 27-24 in a close, tough game against a talented, but fractured, Houston team. Trey predicts that the Tigers will win 30-28. Welcome to Behind Enemy Lines Episode 6. GoTigers247 is joined by Rob Sellers from CougarsDigest.com as the Tigers face off against Houston Cougars at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Friday, October 7th. Houston was ranked in the Top 25 during the preseason and was picked to win the AAC Championship this year, but things have not gone well for them so far. The Cougars sit at 2-3 on the season, and 0-1 in the AAC after a frustrating OT loss to Tulane in Week 5. There has been plenty of frustration for everyone involved in the program, but head coach Dana Holgorsen has received a majority of the blowback. Houston brings back quarterback Clayton Tune and wide receiver Nathaniel Dell Jr to an offense that has normally been extremely potent. The Cougars lost star running back Alton McCaskill in the preseason to a knee injury, and Tune has struggled to find open receivers down the field. Houston fans have described the offense as "bland" and are frustrated with the offensive line play as the Cougars have had to replace multiple offensive linemen over the past few years. Rob speaks about the unfortunate penalty issues that the Cougars have experienced during their five games. He says most of the penalties come from a lack of awareness or just plain bad luck. He believes that if the Cougars can limit their penalty issues against the Tigers, they will have a better chance of winning the game. The defense boasts a strong and aggressive front seven, but opponents' offenses have targeted that aggressiveness with short dump off passes. He believes the matchup between the Tigers' offensive line and the Cougars' defensive line will be the matchup that will determine the outcome of the game. If the Tigers can exert their will at the line of scrimmage, he believes Seth Henigan can pick apart a secondary that has routinely had issues covering receivers down the field. Obviously, the offensive line has been a point of concern for the Tigers, alongside the route running ability of receivers. Can the Tigers' receivers gain separation from Houston in the secondary and exploit their deficiencies? Rob believes the Tigers should absolutely be expected to win the game. He shares that he believes the Cougars are talented enough to "wake up" at some point during this season, but the concern for him is that the Cougars are not as talented as believed in the preseason. Greg and Eli talk about the another week of craziness in the NFL, Mike Evans and Marshon Lattimore back at it again, issues at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium and more.
Former QB1, now Graduate Assistant, Brady White joined GoTigers247 on this episode of Off the Boards. Brady White was QB1 at Memphis from 2018-2020 and during his three seasons led the Tigers to some of the most successful years in program history. After leaving Memphis following the 2020 season, Brady was invited to rookie minicamp with the Tennessee Titans, ultimately ending up being drafted to the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL. But, like a lot of cerebral players, he has transitioned to a new career path in coaching college football. Brady shares with GT247 his mindset on whether or not he will continue to play and why he chose to start his coaching career now. Brady believes he is not done playing football just yet, but he also believes that coaching has been written in the stars for him since he stepped foot on a college campus. Coming to Memphis solidified the desire to coach, and so when an opportunity to become a graduate assistant at his alma mater opened up, the choice was clear. Brady shares how he reached out to Head Coach Ryan Silverfield, and details the conversation when he let Ryan know he was ready to join his staff. Brady describes his love for football and how being around the sport in any capacity is important to him. He knew that during the off-season with the USFL he wanted to continue to be able to contribute to the game, and believed that coming to Memphis was the best opportunity for him to jumpstart his career in coaching. In the second segment, Brady goes into great detail about why he chose Memphis to start his coaching career. With Brady's numerous connections that he has established over the years at Arizona State and Memphis he could have made a few phone calls and probably joined a plethora of staffs. Brady shares why, ultimately, his confidence in Ryan Silverfield, head coaching acumen and his love for the city of Memphis brought him back here. Brady describes Memphis as a second home. He loves this city and the University and believes transferring to Memphis in 2018 was the best decision he has made. He believes coming back to Memphis feels right, and appreciates the love he and his family has received from the city and Tiger fans. Brady transitions to talk about his role as a GA for the offense, and how he will be spending most of his time in the wide receiver room with Coach David Glidden. We described his role with the wide receivers as a "cheat code" for the offense because of his ability to share what the QB1, specifically Seth Henigan, is looking for from them. While it would seem obvious that Brady would work with the quarterbacks, putting Brady in the wide receiver room seems to be a strategic move to help communication between two of the major position groups in the offense. We end the show talking about how much the landscape of college football has changed since his entry into the college game in 2017. Brady talks about how college football programs need to adapt to these changes or risk getting left behind. This discussion prompts a conversation around the investments that the city of Memphis has made into the program through the Memphis Rising program and the renovations to the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Brady is proud to see where the program is now and believes that the best is yet to come for Tiger football and Tiger fans. In the latest installment of Tigers on Tap, join lifelong Memphis Tiger fans, TJ Willis and Trey Lasley, as they discuss the latest news in Tiger athletics. In the first segment, Trey and TJ discuss Tiger football and the big recruiting weekends that the Tigers have had over the past two weeks. Trey and TJ discuss the needs of the Tiger team for the 2023 class, and if they are happy with the group of kids that have committed to play for the Tigers. The guys try to alleviate some of the noise in TigerNation about the lack of highly ranked players that have committed so far. TJ discusses how rankings in high school football recruiting services have notoriously been late to evaluate players and once they have committed to a team will more than likely receive a ratings bump. Trey and TJ share a firm belief that the overall ranking of the Tigers' 2023 recruiting class will be much higher than where it is currently ranked. The guys then talk about the brand new turf that has been installed at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium over the past few weeks and how excited they are about the Tigers finally being able to play on a new field, instead of the dingy, old turf they have played on for quite a long time. In the second segment, Trey and TJ change topics and discuss Tiger basketball, and all the news that has dropped over the past few weeks. Trey mentions the hiring of former Tulsa head coach, Frank Haith, as an assistant basketball coach. TJ and Trey are both extremely pleased with the hire and believe that the veteran leadership of a former rival head coach will only serve the Tigers well on both ends of the floor. Then the guys discuss the ongoing saga of "Where is Larry Brown?" They break down how important it will be to have Larry Brown around the team and how his multiple decades of experience can only serve Penny well. They end the discussion on the coaching staff by highlighting the hire of former Vanderbilt assistant coach and Whitehaven High School head coach, Faragi Phillips. TJ and Trey share how they believe the Tiger staff is in a good place and believe this staff can really bring the best out of the players. The guys end this segment talking about the roster and all of the new players that have committed to playing for the team. They go into detail on the games of Keonte Kennedy, Emmanuel Akot, and Kao. They share their thoughts on how these players will gell with the remaining members of the team and also with prized transfer portal signee Kendric Davis. TJ and Trey end the show discussing Johnathan Lawson and how they believe he will surprise Tiger fans with his skill level. About Tigers on Tap Tigers on Tap is a podcast for fans by fans. In this episode of Off the Boards, we are joined by Memphis Tiger head football coach, Ryan Silverfield. Ryan is entering into his third full year of leading the Tigers and is coming off a disappointing 6-6 record in 2021. Ryan shares his reaction and thoughts about spring football and the goals he established for the team during spring football. He spoke about how proud he was of the way the team has gelled during the offseason and the emphasis that the staff puts on conditioning during summer workouts. Ryan then discusses the quarterback competition during the spring between Grant Gunnell and incumbent starter, Seth Henigan. He speaks glowingly about the maturation of Seth and the step he's seen in Seth since stepping on campus as a skinny, 17-year old kid. Ryan talks about the "swag" that Seth possesses and how he has demanded and earned the respect of veteran players on the Tiger roster. He goes in depth about the comparisons between Seth Henigan and former Tiger great, Brady White, in terms of the mental side of playing the game. Ryan highlights how the staff purposefully recruits high character guys and the way they go about weeding out kids that might not fit the "character" of the team. To end the first segment, Ryan talks about the rest of the quarterback room and which of the guys in that room have the potential to back Seth up to start the year. In the second segment, Ryan shares how his recruiting staff doesn't necessarily look at film first to determine whether or not to offer a kid in high school a scholarship. He shares how his team has a checklist of character questions that help them understand if a kid will fit into the culture he is creating at Memphis. Ryan breaks down the 2023 recruiting class and the needs that the Tiger staff has identified for the team. Kenny asks Ryan how he feels about the impact that the transfer portal has had on high school recruiting and Ryan's own personal conviction about finding the balance between plugging and playing players through the portal and recruiting and developing young high school talent. Kenny and Ryan then discuss the Memphis Rising Initiative and the unveiling of the proposed mock ups to renovations to the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Ryan shares how excited he is to see the changes and is proud of the community investment into the football program. He states that he believes that his staff is building the culture at Memphis the right way and is excited to see the community investment as recognition of that fact. To close out the interview, Kenny asks Ryan about the Big 12 expansion plans and if he thinks Memphis not being added to those plans will negatively recruiting for the Tigers. Then they transition to discuss NIL and the ever changing conversation around NIL and recruiting and how he views recruiting in the NIL era. They discuss their thoughts on how they believe QB1 was always Seth's job to lose, and how Seth proved himself worthy of continuing to build on his freshman year exploits where he was voted to the Freshman All-American team. Trey and TJ discuss how Tevin Carter is, more than likely, the second string quarterback, and how impressed they have been with him during spring ball. In the second segment, Trey and TJ go into great detail about the new plans for the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The Tiger football introduced new renderings in a video under the Memphis Rising plans for Tiger athletics. TJ describes the renderings as the best possible scenario, and if the stadium is renovated to the depth that the renderings propose, the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium will be the most beautiful stadium in all of college football. The guys push back against the criticism that the Tigers athletic department have received because they have moved away from an on campus stadium. In the third segment, the guys reiterate how Tiger fans should "Trust in Penny." After Kendric Davis' signing with the Tigers out of the transfer portal most Tiger fans were expecting a rush of signings to fill out the 2022-23 roster. Since that hasn't happened some fans are concerned about what Penny is doing on the recruiting trail. The guys go into detail on the status of Deandre Williams and Lester Quinones, and who they believe the Tigers might be targeting in the transfer portal.
