It's more common to have an uneven skin tone than not. Regardless of your skin colour, dark spots and patches can appear on any part of the face and body. This is referred to as hyperpigmentation - think of it as your skin's way of keeping a diary of your adventures (such as sun-soaked holidays, scarring moments and pregnancy journeys). While it's common, many people find it problematic. So, as summer gives its last hurrah, I'm sharing my Pigmentation Playbook. It's designed to get you clear on the types of hyperpigmentation you may (or may not) have, outline the approach to treating this tricky skin concern, and explain why taking a 'stepladder' approach might be your best bet in the quest for a bright and even complexion. As we navigated through the world of pop culture and current events, we ended up in a whirlwind of discussions that included everything from the return of Vanderpump Rules to the mystery surrounding Beyonce's skin tone. But not every topic was about fun and games. Black is beautiful. Never forget that. And yet, skin bleaching products are everywhere you look – be it in billboards or social media. Both men and women are doing it, even if they don't always want to admit to it in public. The problem is: making your skin lighter could actually be dangerous to your health. In this episode we explore the abusive and dangerous cosmetic procedure of skin bleaching. This is the process of whitening the skin or obstructing the natural process of melanin production. What is melanin? Melanin is a brown or black pigment found in the retina, hair, and skin; it is naturally produced in humans and animals. Why would anyone want to prohibit or decrease the amount of melanin their body produces? Though, some say they use to treat hyperpigmentation marks, a vast majority of consumers of these skin whitening products have one goal in mind, to become more fair, they want to be white. Let's explore why would people of color intentionally lighten their skin. The painful history of these skin whitening products can be traced back to brutal slavery. Though, this began amongst European women during the Victorian-age, today skin lightening is most commonly used amongst people of color. Within ethnic groups across the world darker skin people have been told that they are unworthy and not as beautiful as more fair skin people. What is even more devastating is that a lot of this hateful colorist rhetoric comes from within each individual ethnic groups. For example, in India, famous Bollywood actors and actresses encourage their followers to be more "Fair & White" by using skin lightening serums. What are the adverse reactions associated with using these products? Besides the emotional toll it takes on the people that feel they need to be more fair, it can cause serious health problems. The idea of altering skin tone has been around since ancient times. Arguably, it was during the height of colonialism and the rise of “scientific racism” (the pseudoscientific idea that empirical evidence supports notions of racial superiority and inferiority) from the 18th to the 19th century that white skin became even more desired. Today, over a century after the zenith of scientific racism, the aesthetic standard of “lighter is better” has persisted, particularly in the “global south.” In some ways, challenging the practice of skin-lightening on the basis of skin damage is a lost cause as users will so often believe that the aimed-for benefits will outweigh the dangers. Skin whitening has been marketed as part of a fight against ageing, which means it has also come to be seen as a legitimate way to take care of one’s skin. Women (and men) are told over and over that getting and keeping glowing skin at all ages is a standard requirement for beauty. In this week's podcast episode, Marni spoke with Dr Tess Mauricio about skin whitening and skin bleaching. Dr Tess Mauricio is a Board Certified Dermatologist, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She is the founder of M Beauty by Dr Tess and the youngest woman to hold the position of President of The San Diego Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Why is skin bleaching so popular amongst minorities? Why has Colorism or Shadeism dug deep into the world's view on beauty all stemming from Eurocentric beauty standards? Colorism is a huge disadvantage for darker-skinned people while it offers privilege to those with lighter skin. Research has linked colorism to lower incomes, lower marriage rates, longer prison terms, and fewer job prospects for darker-skinned people. This episode aims to increase your awareness of colorism by learning about the practice and its historical roots, the celebrities who’ve experienced it and how changing beauty standards might help us fight the discrimination being experienced. To be honest, when I started out researching this topic, I was pretty clueless and surprised at how prevalent skin bleaching is and is a continued practice in parts of the US, Africa, the Carribean, and Asia. Despite this practice, that is going back several hundred years, and the known physical, physiological and mental damages that can occur from the continued use of skin bleaching, it is still prevalent and in some cases seen as necessary in order for a woman to be considered of worth or value in her society. I hope that after listening you gain some deeper insight into this unfortunate self-care practice and develop a level of understanding of what skin bleaching is and how the practice has been perpetuated and encouraged for so long, a certain level of empathy for understanding their why and lastly a hope that you will go out into your communities and begin to respect and revere in the uniqueness of all women no matter their looks or skin color and see that deep down, essentially we are all the same. Has the AFRICAN-AMERICAN community itself gotten past the issue of COLORISM? A few years ago KENDRICK LAMAR intentionally chose DARKER MODELS for his Poetic Justice video, but that was viewed in the HIP HOP industry as going against the industry norm. In the past LIGHT SKINNED BLACKS were deemed to have more privilege than their darker peers, which often lead to different degrees of envy (i.e. WILLIE LYNCH). However has the recent movement to highlight the beauty of MELANINATED people gotten rid of this type of envy? If so, why are SKIN BLEACHING creams considered BEAUTY products and why are they so popular in AFRICAN countries? .MENTAL DIALOGUE asking the questions America's afraid to ask. In recent weeks Instagram star Blac Chyna caused an uproar with her endorsement of a skin lightening cream. Getting paid for promotional products and services can come at a cost to one’s audience and followers. Frequent use of bleach whitening creams can be interpreted as self hate. We're calling the Hair Weave and Skin Bleaching epidemic for what it is.......A MENTAL SICKNESS.......but too many of us are so terribly afraid to delve deep within and face the music of their own generational ailment of a dysfunction. In this episode of The LanceScurv Show, Mrs. Scurv and yours truly go in hard on the unfortunate self hating phenomenon of the self mutilation of taking these dangerous toxic chemicals to lighten one's skin and gluing and/or weaving another corpse's hair (and D.N.A.) onto their scalp to feel "better" about their appearance and to move closer to what they feel is a more European appearance. Why do these women feel so low about the Creator given natural appearance that they would spend so much money on fake hair and risk their health with these deadly concoctions to look like a people who laugh at the clown-like grotesque visuals that these low self esteem suffering people present. We made it to 10 weeks in. Still consistent. We get into our personal stories and adventures in Hip-Hop involving the likes of #Ghostface Killah, Killah Priest, Trife Da God, Jay Electronica, DJ Premier, Terminology, Lil Fame from M.O.P., Mos Def, and more. We then get into stories about treks to get albums pre-internet. Then we get into edited versions of songs. From there we get into new additions to the lexicon of mainstream America courtesy of Hip-Hop like #THOT, #Bando, and #ratchet. We then get into a host of topics including #gangsta lyrics being used at trials, jailhouse freestyles, and world music artists from genres such as #azonto, #dancehall, #reggae, #soca, and #afrobeat like #Chronixx, #Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Wizkid, Ice Prince, D'Banj, Sean Paul, and Bunji Garlin. We end it off with skin bleaching and the light skin vs. dark skin wars. Needless to say this is a must listen!
On Wednesday May 6, 2015, the government of Cote d'Ivoire banned skin-whitening creams citing health risks caused by the use of these creams. This has generated much-needed discussion around the use of these creams on the African continent and in the diaspora. Our guest, Dr. Anne Lihau-N’kanza, a Congolese surgeon trained in Trauma and critical care joined us to discuss this very important issue affecting not only in Cote d'Ivoire, Congo but around the world.
HERE WE WILL GO INTO DOME OF THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE BLEACH THE SKIN AND SOME OF THE DANGEROUS PHYSICAL EFFECTS AS WELL AS A FEW PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS.
Globally, the practice of skin bleaching has reached pandemic proportions, and in Ghana, the focus of the current research, upwards of 30 percent of the female population currently actively bleaches. Medical professionals and public commentators all agree that the desire to be seen as beautiful motivates the practice. Advancing the popular Ghanaian aphorism “ahoofe kasa,” which means literally “beauty talks,” this presentation will explore the politics of beauty among women in Ghana, particularly those who currently use or at one time have used skin lightening agents. More specifically, the study relies primarily upon qualitative data to investigate the relationship between gender, skin bleaching, light skin, and beauty. Although the participants interviewed indeed claim that their use of skin lightening agents is fueled by a desire to be perceived as more noticeably beautiful, critical analysis of the data reveals that what they are seeking is not an arbitrary beauty, but one that is functional and materializes via light skin. In this way, beauty via light skin, as gained through skin bleaching, allows participants access to social capital, and for many, their newly bleached light skin color becomes a bartering tool negotiable for economic capital.
Tonight we want to find out what you define as ugly and what you see as beauty. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and beauty is only skin deep but how do you see yourself? Why do we need to fill our breasts, lips and butts with silicone to feel attractive to men? Is it ok to be bald or should men who can afford it get a hair transplant in order to feel better about themselves. What lengths are we willing to go to make our skins lighter or darker? Let's chop it up!3479457556
