Recorded on 19 September 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Andy Bannister Today's public square is largely a digital one, so it's vital that Christians, ministries, and churches think creatively and clearly about how to engage the world of media, social media, and other digital spaces. Andy Bannister, Director of Solas, a UK-based evangelism ministry that specialises in digital content creation, helps us explore how we engage hearts, minds, and souls through the digital realm. How can we create content that will be read widely and shared? Do some things work better in digital spaces and others less effectively? What are the positives and what are the pitfalls of digital spaces? Does digital evangelism need huge budgets, or can one do a lot with a little? We explore all this and more in this talk. Dr. Andy Bannister is the Director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity, speaking and teaching regularly throughout the UK, Europe, Canada, the USA, and the wider world. From universities to churches, business forums to TV and radio, he regularly addresses audiences of both Christians and those of all faiths and none on issues relating to faith, culture, politics and society. Lamin Sanneh, wonderful African theologian wrote a great book a few years ago, called Whose Religion is Christianity. And he makes the point that all the major world's major faith traditions have largely stayed focused on the culture where they began. So, Islam is an Arabic faith you pray in Arabic. You pray facing Mecca. Saudi Arabia is the spiritual center, so it's remained centered on Arabia. Thailand...Buddhism...90% of the world's Buddhists are in Thailand, and that part of Asia, you know, the whole thing sort of kicks off.And so it goes for all the world's major faith traditions. The one exception Lamin says is Christianity. It begins as a Middle Eastern faith, then it expands into Asia and becomes an Asian faith, then it goes west and becomes an African faith then it heads up north and becomes a European faith. It goes across the Atlantic with the Pilgrim Fathers and becomes an American faith. Now it's headed south and becomes a Latin American faith. It's going back into Africa, again, with millions of Christians there, and again, now spreading like wildfire across the Middle East. And he makes the point: Christianity is...you can't pin it down, because it's not tied in to one human culture. Because the God of the Bible is much bigger than human culture even though in the person Jesus, He stepped into one culture in particular.---Listen to author, speaker and apologist, Andy Bannister being interviewed by author and theologian, Andrew Ollerton. In this wide-ranging special episode of Pod of the Gaps we cover a number of vital issues in/around the challenges of leadership, mission, apologetics, and ministry. In particular, Andy Bannister and Joe Boot both reflect on their similar experiences of working as directors for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. These reflections include the problematic patterns they noticed in the organization long before the worst came became visible; the dilemmas of working for “family-run” organizations where asking questions is discouraged; the ways making/keeping money can corrupt vision and principles longer term. They reflect not only on what went wrong, but also on what lessons can be learned for the future in all sorts of ways. We also talk about Joe Boot's insightful book, "Ruler of Kings", which seeks to reclaim a robust vision of the kingdom in all spheres of life, society, education, and politics. We discuss the different approaches that may be taken in advancing the vital course of mission in these troubled times for the Church in the West. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. Muslims are no longer half a world away, but now include our neighbors, friends, classmates, and coworkers. Do we as Christians worship the same God as Muslims do? What distinguishes Allah from Jesus, the Qur'an from the Bible? And how might we begin to have meaningful conversations with our Muslim neighbors? This is part two of our discussion with Qur'anic scholar, Dr. Andy Bannister, author of Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? (uhop.me/SameGod). Andy continues to offer his insights and wisdom from his years of experience in answering these and other questions and in engaging Muslims who are searching for much more than what they read in the Qur'an.Dr. Andy Bannister is the Director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, speaking and teaching regularly throughout the UK, Europe, Canada, the USA, and the wider world. Have you ever wondered how persecuted Christians who suffer specifically because of their faith can sustain the same kinds of objections? On today's podcast, Dr Andy Bannister - apologist, evangelist and director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, discusses how his own interest in apologetics and evangelism developed. He explains how to deal with the difficult questions of suffering and evil, how persecuted Christians can help us grow in faith, and why we must be honest about the differences between Christianity and Islam.Andy is an experienced and well-travelled speaker and writer who is used to dealing with the difficult questions raised by Christians, atheists and people of other faiths. For resources and more details about Andy Bannister and Solas you can visit the Solas website at www.solas-cpc.orgSupport the show (http://www.releaseinternational.org/podcast)
Many people in our postmodern world argue that Muslims and Christians worship the same God. They post that, as members of the Abrahamic faiths, Christianity and Islam are essentially the same. Most Christians intuitively know this is not true; yet, they still struggle to articulate why it is so. My guest on this podcast is Andy Bannister and his new book is an excellent resource to answer this question. Andy has been engaging Islam since the 90s through street evangelism in London and even completed a Ph.D. in Qur'anic studies. He is the Director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, an evangelism and training ministry based in Scotland. He is passionate about getting the gospel out of the four walls of the Church (and into places like coffee shops, universities, schools, pubs, and so on). He also loves equipping Christians to share their faith at work or among their friends. Andy is a frequent speaker and the author of several works including "The Atheist Who Didn't Exist" and his latest "Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God?" The Guys Like Us Podcast is joined with Andy Bannister who is an author, writer, photographer, adjunct speaker for RZIM, and Director for the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. Andy talks about his education in Islamic Studies and how he stepped into apologetics. Andy shares how we can live together, in the midst of our differences. It’s people who are equal, it’s ideas that are not. We must move away from thinking about Abrahamic faiths to bring together Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Let’s look at each religion as different, rather than assuming similarity. Andy speaks to university audiences across the world on relevant topics by meeting people where they are, “in the public square,” like the early Apostles in Ephesus. Andy dives into some common atheist arguments, the problems with the logic, and the solution found at the cross. Finally, we discuss public Christianity, taking the Gospel outside of the traditional church setting at both a communal and individual level. From head, to heart, to imagination, the Word connects through them all. You can find Andy and more about what he is doing by visiting him at solas-cpc.org.

David Robertson is minister of St Peters Free Church in Dundee Scotland. http://www.stpeters-dundee.org.uk He is also the associate director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity http://www.solas-cpc.orgDavid is in Sydney to speak at Katoomba Christian Convention and for a holiday. He does a lot of writing – in newspapers, magazines, on the net and also books. He's the author of Awakening (the life of Robert Murray McCheyne); The Dawkins Letters, Quench (cafe evangelism) and Magnificent Obsession. His latest book is called Engaging With Atheists. He's interested in history, politics, theology, music, sport, art etc. David's a ‘big picture' person who likes to look at things in a wide context – especially the growth, decline and renewal of the church in the West….His nickname ‘wee flea' comes from a series of interactions He had on the Richard Dawkins website. Robertson was banned from his site under his own name and Dawkins called him, Alaister McGarth and John Lennox ‘fleas living of a dogs back'.Robertson promptly started reposting under the name ‘the wee flea', and Dawkins, not being aware of Scottish church history or the nickname of my denomination (the wee frees), let it go by for a few weeks…until he was outed…and banned again!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thepastorsheart)

During his time as leader of the Liberal Democrat party, Tim Farron was repeatedly questioned about his views on homosexuality and gay sex. When he resigned he said “To be a political leader and to live as a committed Christian, has felt impossible for me”. On a recent Premier Christian Radio interview he reignited the controversy by stating that he regrets saying that gay sex was not a sin. Revd David Robertson of Solas Centre for Public Christianity and Jonathan Bartley of the Green Party react to the interview. David believes that Christians are being discriminated against if they diverge from society’s current views on sexuality. Jonathan, who is also a Christian, doesn’t believe that discrimination is happening and conservative Christians need to get used to new realities. `With so many world religions and philosophies on offer, why should anyone turn to Jesus?' This is the question addressed by Andy Bannister, director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, and an Adjunct Speaker for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, at our Alpha Launch Sunday morning service.
Andy Bannister on how life's biggest questions are not just abstract, but deeply personal. --- "I think the gospel has something to say in every area of life. Christianity is a public truth. One of the mistakes Christians make is answering yesterday's truth. One way to address this is to do a lot more listening and a lot less talking." In the West, it's safe to say that there are many obstacles that come between people and taking faith seriously. There's the idea that science holds the answer to all things; that religion is the cause of all wars; that all religions are the same. "It's far more respectful to my Muslim friends to recognise that what they believe is different, and to take the effort to understand those differences, and not to assume they're just like me." Andy Bannister is the Director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity in the UK, and author of the book The Atheist Who Didn't Exist: Or, The Dreadful Consequences of Bad Arguments. He's dedicated the better part of his life to encouraging people to consider faith, to think carefully and seriously about it. In this conversation we talk about life's big questions; some of the key differences between Islam and Christianity; and what Christian faith has to offer our culture that might be worthwhile. "The reason I treated you with respect and dignity was because I believe you're a person made in the image of God and that your life bears incredible value and dignity. You, on the other hand, have told me three times during our lunch that you believe human beings are nothing more than atoms and particles - nothing more than biology. But you haven't treated me as a person made of atoms and particles, you've actually treated me as a person made in the image of God. You've treated me on the basis of my worldview, not yours. I'm very grateful for that." --- SUBSCRIBE to Life & Faith on Apple Podcasts: www.bit.ly/cpxpodcast
Dr. Andy Bannister, Director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity and speaker at RZIM, joins me this week to discuss his book, "The Atheist Who Didn't Exist: Or the Dreadful Consequences of Bad Arguments." Listen as we discuss arguments from new atheist and why tolerance is disrespectful, and then frame it all in a picture of evangelism and pointing people to Jesus.

This week we air a debate that recently took place on whether Britain's increasingly secular society is thereby a more tolerant one. Does secularisation bring a level playing field for everyone, or are Christians now being marginalised for their beliefs? David Robertson is a church pastor and author who runs the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. He debates with Terry Sanderson, spokesperson for the National Secular Society. Justin also speaks to both for their reflections on the debate and its implications for society. The debate took place at Gunnersbury Baptist Church - the full recording with audience Q&A can be accessed at http://www.gunnersburybaptistchurch.org/events/viewmp3.php?mp3=39-0 Also: Order Unbelievable? Mike Lee aka "The Religious Antagonist" is a US atheist who makes YouTube videos mocking Christianity. His videos are popular but his approach earns him both praise and criticism from fellow atheists. David Robertson is Pastor of St Peter's Free Church, Dundee and director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. He often interacts with atheists online and has earned himself the title "the wee flea" for his provocative interactions on the Dawkins website. David and Mike debate whether Mike's approach is a helpful one. David accuses Mike of emotional atheism and an incoherent view of Christianity. David Robertson is a Scottish church pastor and author of "The Dawkins Letters". He recently hosted the first Conference of the newly established Solas Centre for Public Christianity. As a key respondent to Dawkins he has earned himself the nickname "The Wee Flea". He takes questions from three skeptics on today's prgramme. Stephen Lees has come to doubt his once-held faith. He asks whether Christians are obliged to believe the miracles of the Bible. Agnostic Stephen Pilcher asks how it can be fair for God to send people to hell who simply don't find enough evidence for his existence. And atheist David Moser asks how prayer to an all knowing God makes sense. Today's interview is with Pastor David Robertson of St Peter’s Free Church in Dundee, Scotland and Chairman of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. He talks about his interaction with Richard Dawkins' God Delusion book, his open letters to Dawkins (and the Dawkins Letters book), his thoughts on persuasive evangelism, the goals of evangelistic conversation, the positive effect from the new atheism, how being a pastor overlaps with evangelism and apologetics, the problem with American apologetics, the importance of practical application, connecting with an audience, the top issues that always seem to come up, the state of the new atheism today, the influence of postmodernism, stopping calling yourself an apologist, our tone with others, the starting point for conversations, and more. Enjoy. Apologies: the audio quality was substandard this week because of a technical glitch.
