Peter & Paul were so very different in their weaknesses, upbringing, personalities, and gifts. And yet, by their repentance at the experience of Christ, they were made so profoundly useful to Christ for the revelation of His salvation and the building up of the Church. We look at their lives and ministries today to gain great hope and confidence that Christ takes each one of us, His living stones, and places us all together in a beautiful order for our salvation and that of those outside the Ark of Salvation; Christ's Holy Church.

Why do evangelicals trust a Jewish canon finalized centuries after Christ over the Bible of the apostles? In part two of our Seeking Roots, Finding the Church series, Greg shares his journey from a Calvinist seminary where the Masoretic Text was taught as the “authentic” Old Testament to Catholicism, where he discovered the Septuagint's role in the apostolic Church. Explore how evangelicals' search for “Jewish roots” leads them to a post-Christian Rabbinic tradition and the myth of the “Council of Jamnia,” missing the Church's authority as the New Israel. Discover why the Septuagint, affirmed by early Church councils, offers the true Christian canon and covenant, rooted in the apostles celebrated on the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. Whenever June 29 falls on a Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul instead of the normal Sunday in Ordinary Time. When this happens, we have the opportunity to reflect on the nature of the Church and its masculine, hierarchical dimension. This aspect of the Church gives us the grace of the Sacraments and the guarantee of the truth of her teachings. Yet, the constant conviction of the Church is that her nature is fundamentally feminine, as the "Bride of Christ." Learning to be receptive, like Mary, is the key to our self-understanding. May Peter and Mary teach us to be Church!

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, ApostlesThe Miracle of Dunkirk refers to the large-scale evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France, during World War II. Trapped by German forces, over 338,000 British and Allied troops were rescued by a combined effort of the Royal Navy and civilian boats between May 26 and June 4, 1940. Sts. Peter and St. Paul went on a spiritual rescue mission across the Roman world by evangelizing with boldness. They suffered and died as witnesses to Christ's truth, strengthening the Church through their letters, doctrine, and leadership. Sts. Peter and Paul continue to intercede for the Church as saints in heaven. Today, we celebrate the feast day of the pillars of the Catholic Church, Sts. Peter and Paul. St. Peter was chosen by Our Lord to be the first Pope. He preached the Gospel to the Jewish people and established the headquarters of the Church in Rome, where he was eventually martyred.St. Peter was buried on the Vatican Hill in Rome and a church was built on the spot. This is the same place where the Vatican Basilica is today. The bones of St. Peter are in the crypt below the Vatican and so the central church of the Catholic Church is literally built on St. Peter.St. Paul, meanwhile, spread the Gospel to the Gentiles, starting communities of Catholics all throughout the Roman Empire. He also ended his life in Rome, where he was likewise martyred. The institution for which these two saints died is the only divine institution on this earth. By this, I mean that it is the only institution specifically founded by God. When Our Lord came on this earth, He founded one institution before leaving this earth, what we call the Catholic Church. His association with this institution is so close that we speak of the Church as the Bride of Christ. God is married to the Church He founded. What this means is that Our Lord chose to make the Catholic Church the one institution on this earth that would communicate the fruits of His Redemption to mankind. Our Lord takes all of the graces that He merited on the Cross and He has them pass through the Catholic Church to souls, especially through the administration of the sacraments by the priests of the Church. It is for this reason that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. There is only one Savior, Jesus Christ. He has chosen to found only one divine institution on this earth, the Catholic Church, and He has only given to that Church the power to save souls, the power to communicate to men the graces that flow from the Cross for the salvation of souls.

Episode 136: The Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul In today's episode, we look at some details from the second reading and Gospel reading for this upcoming Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul that are relevant for doing apologetics. The first detail, which is found in the second reading—taken from 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18, relates to apologetical discussions on the topic of purgatory. The detail in the Gospel reading, which is taken from Matthew 16:18-19, relates to Peter's role as the “rock” of the Church—the visible foundation of Jesus' Church here on earth, and his infallibility. AI will fundamentally transform science. It will supercharge the research process, making it faster and more efficient and broader in scope. It will make scientists themselves vastly more productive, more objective, maybe more creative. It will make many human participants—and probably some human scientists—obsolete… Or at least these are some of the claims we are hearing these days. There is no question that various AI tools could radically reshape how science is done, and how much science is done. What we stand to gain in all this is pretty clear. What we stand to lose is less obvious, but no less important. My guest today is Dr. Molly Crockett. Molly is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. In a recent widely-discussed article, Molly and the anthropologist Dr. Lisa Messeri presented a framework for thinking about the different roles that are being imagined for AI in science. And they argue that, when we adopt AI in these ways, we become vulnerable to certain illusions. Here, Molly and I talk about four visions of AI in science that are currently circulating: AI as an Oracle, as a Surrogate, as a Quant, and as an Arbiter. We talk about the very real problems in the scientific process that AI promises to help us solve. We consider the ethics and challenges of using Large Language Models as experimental subjects. We talk about three illusions of understanding the crop up when we uncritically adopt AI into the research pipeline—an illusion that we understand more than we actually do; an illusion that we're covering a larger swath of a research space than we actually are; and the illusion that AI makes our work more objective. We also talk about how ideas from Science and Technology Studies (or STS) can help us make sense of this AI-driven transformation that, like it or no, is already upon us. Along the way Molly and I touch on: AI therapists and AI tutors, anthropomorphism, the culture and ideology of Silicon Valley, Amazon's Mechanical Turk, fMRI, objectivity, quantification, Molly's mid-career crisis, monocultures, and the squishy parts of human experience. Without further ado, on to my conversation with Dr. Molly Crockett. Racializing Caste: Anthropology Between Germany and India and the Legacy of Irawati Karve (1905-1970) (De Gruyter, 2025) analyzes how racial knowledge has circulated in transnational entanglements, particularly between Germany and India, into the research on human variation in India, racializing the understanding of caste and ethnicity. It focuses on the legacy of Irawati Karve (1905-1970), an Indian anthropologist trained at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Eugenics, and Human Heredity in Berlin, Germany (1927-1930) and a prominent scientist in post-colonial India. Besides a historical analysis of Karve's adaptation of racial approaches to the study of Indian castes, the book applies material-semiotic and ethnographic lenses to examine how her work is taken up today in anthropology and population genetics. By showing how transnational and transcolonial entanglements in race science shape knowledge on human diversity in India, the book offers novel insights to discussions in anthropology, STS, and global history, including the racialization of difference, colonial legacies, and post-colonial sovereignty in science. It contributes to a better understanding of the co-constitution of politics and sciences of human diversity and it argues for a closer attention to inequalities as a way to de-link from the legacies of scientific racism.
