Ep 465 - Seeing Street Kids' Potential Guest: Krista Thompson By Stuart McNish   “The reasons why children end up on the streets are complex. Often, their arrival represents an active decision on their part in response to serious rights violations at home,” says Moses Ogutu in “Under The Bridge: The Invisible Lives of Street Children.” Ogutu was a child of the street for five years. Today, he is an international business and trade lecturer at the African Leadership University and a 2017 Mandela Rhodes Scholar.   Ogutu's life journey is proof that children who end up on the streets can and do rise above the challenges they face. Ogutu points out that homelessness among youth is a global problem and in each jurisdiction, the reason a child arrives on the street is individual and globally similar.   Krista Thompson, the past CEO of Vancouver's Covenant House, agrees. “There are many successful intervention strategies that work to help young people who clearly have smarts and grit and problem-solving abilities to move forward toward a more positive future.” One such strategy is “Relentless Support,” a program that Covenant House offers.   We invited Krista Thompson to join us for a Conversation That Matters about ensuring that young people are not forgotten, are visible, and supported to grow, develop, and realize their potential.   Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca   Join me Oct 3 for Conversations Live - A Vancouver Sun Town Hall: AI - Friend or Foe https://www.conversationslive.ca/

Part 3: “Multnomah County Manson”For the past two weeks, I've told you the stories of the Street Kids of Portland that fell prey to the power of The Family- Led by Grant Charboneau and Greg Wilson. They had a hand in the killings of Hal Charbanou, Misty Largo, and Leon Stanton. One of their murderous helpers was James Nelson. While Grant and Greg spent their time behind bars, James finished his, was released, and soon found himself on the streets yet again. Finally, he could fulfill his desire to be the leader of a group of kids. But he would rule with a literal iron fist. When a young girl with disabilities enters the scene, she struggles to follow the rules and soon meets consequences she never imagined and certainly didn't deserve. This is the conclusion of Street Kids- and the Multnomah County Manson family. For photos and sources for today's episode, check out the Murder in the Rain episode blog. Episode Host: Alisha HollandIf you'd like more episodes of Murder in the rain, Patreon members of at least $5/mo, gain access to exclusive episodes, ad-free episodes, bonus content, and more.Follow us on:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/murderintherain/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/mintherain/ Twitter  https://twitter.com/murderintherain TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@em_murderintherain Website https://www.murderintherain.com/ Email murderintherain@gmail.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Factor 75 and use my code rain50 for a great deal: https://www.factor75.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/murder-in-the-rain/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Part 2: “Fantastic Army of the Night”Last week I introduced you to Grant Charboneau, Greg Wilson and the Family of street kids they ruled over. They had their own rules and if they were broken, there would be ramifications. Which was what happened to Misty Largo; a teenage girl who was murdered after a brutal 36 hours of torture, brought on after the family decided she was not abiding. Grant, as XO or the leader of the family, was starting to feel paranoid that his henchman, or hench-boy, 15-year-old Leon might spill about not only Misty, but the violent murder of Hal; Grant's father. So, what would become of Leon? Today, I'll be telling you about the death order put out on Leon and what Grant and Greg faced when the police came knocking. Part 1: "Rambo Games"Homeless rates have skyrocketed across the country over the last few years. But it isn't anything new. But back in the 1980s there was a new scene brewing in the houseless community- street kids. While many of the street kids of Portland were simply looking for a new home, a new sense of community where they could feel safe away from abusive homes, others were finding opportunities to take leadership positions that would allow them to take control over the kids. Creating “Families'' which differed little from the Manson Family. Today I'll be telling the first part of three surrounding Grant Charboneau, Greg Wilson, James Nelson and how their rule left Jessica Williams, Michelle Largo and Leon Stanton Dead.

When we speak of revolution, aren't we are ultimately speaking of the creation of a different culture? And if so, how plausible or meaningful is it to imagine deliberately crafting a culture? In this episode, we begin to examine the long history of cultures on the margins of civilization as political projects, which are often misconstrued by states (and their ethnographers) as archaic remnants rather than deliberate efforts at state evasion. While this history will ultimately take us through millions of years of evolution, we will start by drawing out the parallels between northern California's back to the land movement--a culture we are all well aware was deliberately crafted as a political choice--and hill tribes, as described in James C. Scott's masterful The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia.

The double murder of Audrey Carey and Steve Carter captivated the Bay Area back in 2015 after it was found that the crimes had been carried out by a trio of transient youth.   For many around the Bay, it was a catalyzing moment that pushed the problems of homelessness and youth dislocation out of the realm of “social problem to be addressed,” and instead into the realm of “clear and present danger to be protected against.” But is there something more to be learned from the stories of the three young people responsible for these crimes? And if we did manage to learn those lessons, could we do a better job supporting other young people walking a similar path? That’s the set of questions raised by former San Francisco Chronicle crime and criminal justice reporter Vivian Ho in her new book, “Those Who Wander: America’s Lost Street Kids.” She joins this edition of KCBS In Depth to discuss.  Host: KCBS Radio reporter Keith Menconi

Known around the world as throw-away-children, street-kids are subject to abuse, neglect and exploitation. They arrive on the streets of towns and cities from dire circumstances to live or to escape the cycles of abuse and neglect. Yet many view them as an irritation or at the worst pests that need to be removed from society. In this episode we interview Social Worker Marion Thomas, chat in studio to Paul Hooper; Director of The Homestead Projects for Children and visit a number of local Outreach Projects working with kids in Muizenberg to get their perspectives. We look at some of the problems resulting from a life on the streets and how it impacts both the street children, residents and visitors in our communities. What should our responses be to them and how do we help solve the problems arising. There are two sides to every story, and we try to understand both.

As founder and director of ‘Street Kids Direct’ he works tirelessly in Guatemala with a small team of staff and volunteers doing outreach on the streets, mentoring high risk young people, operating a centre which is a safe place for the children to come and training and campaigning for the rights of these children. Street Kids Direct is now one of the most successful charities working with street children in Guatemala and can accredited with the reduction in children on the streets of Central America. What Duncan has seen and the stories he can tell can be harrowing but we can’t ignore the desperation and the poverty that children in this world live in. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world. Youth Centres across the country play an important role in the rehabilitation of young street children. It is often the need to escape from poor circumstances at home, that drove them onto the streets in the first place. As the country commemorates Youth Month, Port Elizabeth is home to a youth centre where boys aged between six and 18 are placed by the court. Veronica Fourie paid a visit to the Khayalethu Youth Centre
