We're double-dipping on Kurt Busiek today! We're still continuing his run on Thunderbolts with #18 and the rudest French supervillain you'll ever meet, but first we're reading Superman: Secret Identity from 2004, with Stuart Immonen on art. It's a story about a regular kid named Clark Kent in a regular universe where superheroes only exist in comics, who gets ridiculed constantly for his name. And then he gets powers. Whoa! Join us as we follow this variant Clark Kent through a full lifetime, and we discuss the duality of Busiek. Next Time: We check out the Secret Identity spiritual sequel, Batman: Creature of the Night!

Episode 199!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Superman: Secret Identity"! Collecting the critically lauded 4-issue miniseries written by Kurt Busiek (JLA/AVENGERS, ASTRO CITY) with art by Stuart Immonen (SUPERMAN: END OF THE CENTURY, THOR). Set in the real world, SECRET IDENTITY examines the life of a young Kansas man with the unfortunate name of Clark Kent. All Clark wants is to be a writer, but his daily life is filled with the taunts and jibes of his peers, comparing him to that other Clark Kent -- the one with super-powers. Until one day when Clark awakens to discover that he can fly...that he does in fact have super-strength! But where did these powers come from? And what's he going to do about it? Superman: Secret Identity is a four-issue mini-series written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Stuart Immonen. It was first published monthly, starting January 2004. The title was not released under the Elseworlds banner, but is regarded as a non-canonical story. The story describes the life of Clark Kent, a man in a world in which superheroes exist only as characters in comics, who suddenly gains the powers of Superman and embarks on a super-heroic career, but keeps his existence secret from the world at large. On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!, we finished our summer reading program with Batman: Creature of the Night from Kurt Busiek and the late John Paul Leon. Beginning in late 2017, Busiek returns with his take on Batman, using the same concept that he used a decade earlier with Superman: Secret Identity. Beginning in the 1960s, we follow the story of Bruce Wainwright who happens to be a fan of Batman. His life starts to follow a similar path like that of Bruce Wayne, surrounded by Alfred, Robin and Detective Gordon. We are joined in the studio by friend-of-the-show Jeff Smith who suggested the Batman mini-series to us. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. This Week: Another fan chose book for March Madness, Superman Secret Identity: In this critically acclaimed work from writer Kurt Busiek (ASTRO CITY) and artist Stuart Immonen (Ultimate X-Men), an alternate “Clark Kent” encounters complications the real Superman never had to handle: a career, a wife, children—a real life. Despite his iconic name, Clark Kent from Picketsville, Kansas, is just a normal kid whose parents thought they were being clever. He can’t fly, or see through walls, or shrug off speeding bullets—that is, until the day he can. And it’s all much harder than it looks in the comics. Follow Clark across the decades as this man with powers tries to prove he can make the world a safer place without sacrificing everything. Next Week: The Uncanny X-Men. Magneto, master of magnetism. The bitterest of enemies for years. But now they must join forces against a new adversary who threatens them all and the entire world besides in the name of God. In God Loves, Man Kills.
In an all-new, all-different episode of Off The Panel (by gar, it's been a while), Alex and Jamie go deep into the greatest Superman story to ever not contain Superman. Thirteen years ago, veterans Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen took the comics world by storm when they introduced fans to an ordinary teenage boy named Clark Kent, who lived in a world identical to our own, right down to the comic book character he was named after. What happened when he discovered he was more like that other Clark Kent than he thought left readers speechless at the time, but the mini-series had faded from the spotlight until the announcement of its follow-up in 2016. Join your hosts as they discuss the power this story still holds, the ability of myth to frame our own lives, and Jamie finally becoming one with the universe. Joe's homework in the wake of Kick-Ass was to read one of James' favourite comics ever and one of Seb's favourite comics ever. So let's hope this went well, otherwise he's probably fired. Meanwhile, there have also been a few movie trailers of note that we'd probably better get around to discussing in the news section. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Recorded at The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, held in Kendal UK, on Saturday 17th October 2015 (Please note: this recording ends abruptly, due to the recording medium losing power - trust me when I say, the panel ends with rapturous applause!) "Award-winning artistic chameleon and Marvel Architect Stuart Immonen began his comics career in 1988, and he's worked for most of the industry's major publishers - including Marvel, DC and Image - in the quarter-century since. During his decade-long tenure at DC, in addition to writing and pencilling Adventures Of Superman, Stuart illustrated the critically-acclaimed mini-series Superman: Secret Identity. For Marvel, as well as 2011's Fear Itself event, he has drawn such high-profile series as Ultimate Spider-Man, The Mighty Thor, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers and the cult favourite Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. After joining forces with Mark Waid to inaugurate Marvel's digital Infinite Comics line, in the Marvel NOW! era, Immonen launched All-New X-Men and All-New Captain America. His creator-owned credits include collaborations with Kurt Busiek on Shockrockets and Superstar, and with wife Kathryn Immonen on Never As Bad As You Thunk, Moving Pictures and the recently-completed Russian Olive To Red King. Need we say more? Join Stuart Immonen and festival patron Sean Phillips in a live draw event where Stuart will also discuss his life and work."

Winston Noel from the great podcast Hear Me Out stops by to talk about comic book cartoons of the ‘90s and today. We cover everything from X-Men to Young Justice, and get ready to hear the old Fantastic Four theme like you’ve never heard it before: a semi-competent a cappella performance by improv comedians! Winston’s appearance also brings out the music fiends in Matt and Brett, so get ready to hear more about Oasis and Sheryl Crow than you have all week. Or maybe all year? Check out Winston’s podcast Hear Me Out, where he and co-host Alden Ford defend the most indefensible songs known to mankind. You can also follow him on Twitter @WinstonNoel and see him perform with the improv group Grandma’s Ashes every Saturday night at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. Next week’s reading is Superman: Secret Identity from DC Comics by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen. You can purchase a new printing of this modern classic on Amazon or get a digital download on Comixology. On the December 21, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film editor Ben Pearson to discuss the latest film and TV news, including updates on the future of the DC Film Universe.Opening Banter: In The News:(og Erin): Dwayne Johnson Says Black Adam Will Not Appear In 'First Chapter' Of The New DC UniverseWhat does this mean? Have we seen the last of The Rock as Black Adam?Could he possibly return later?Valerie: Zachary Levi Suggests There Are No Plans To Recast Shazam In The New DC Universe(og Jeremy): James Gunn Addresses The Current State Of DC, Knows It's Pretty Rough Out There Right NowWhat Gunn tweeted:One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least. Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind.No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we've been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions. We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us.But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.Mid-Roll Sponsor break: “we're going to take a quick break, and we'll be right back”(og Ben): The DCU Will Face Less Studio Interference Than The Snyderverse Did, According To James Gunn"The position is different than it was with Zack [Snyder], etc. Peter [Safran] & I are the heads of DC Studios. The only studio interference would be from us!"(og Devin): Plans For Elseworlds DC Projects Are 'Actively Happening' According To James GunnSomeone on twitter asked if he was open to producing any Elseworlds DC projects that aren't set in the DCU, to which James Gunn responded “That is actively happening.”Should they be doing movies outside of the connected universe? Is he talking about Matt Reeves' The Batman movie and The Joker sequel? Or is he talking about actual elseworlds adaptations? What DC Elseworlds story would you like to see as a live action movie?Peter would love to see Red Son or Superman: Secret Identity (not really an elseworlds story)Other possibilities: Gotham by Gaslight, Kingdom Come, The Golden AgeAll the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.
