La semana pasada el experimento T2K de Japón anunció el primer indicio de que las oscilaciones de neutrinos distinguen entre materia y antimateria. Esencialmente, un neutrino que se propaga por el espacio no se comporta igual que un antineutrino. En el programa de hoy os explicamos qué es lo que hace T2K y cómo ha descubierto estas diferencias entre neutrinos y antineutrinos, y también os contamos por qué este resultado es uno de los más esperados de los últimos años en física de partículas. Para ello contamos con la ayuda de Anselmo Cervera, investigador en el Instituto de Física Corpuscular de Valencia. Le journal Nature en fait sa Une aujourd'hui. Même si on ne peut pas encore parler de découverte au sens de celui de la physique des particules qui requiert une signifiance statistique très grande, les nouveaux résultats obtenus par la collaboration internationale T2K ne cessent de se rapprocher des 5 sigmas tant recherchés : une nette différence est observée dans le comportement oscillatoire des neutrinos muoniques et celui de leurs antiparticules, avec une signifiance statistique qui atteint 3 sigmas.

Like so many of us, Richard got his start in music, where he was a vocalist / wanna be rockstar. As luck would have it, his "real job" in a music store exposed him to pro-audio systems and a career was found! Los neutrinos son partículas elementales pequeñísimas, sin carga eléctrica y tan escurridizas que pueden atravesar la Tierra sin chocar con ninguno de sus átomos en el camino. A pesar de la dificultad que entraña la detección y estudio de los neutrinos, una colaboración internacional estudia las propiedades de estas partículas con el experimento llamado T2K, del que nuestro invitado, Federico Sánchez Nieto, es portavoz internacional. El experimento consiste en crear un haz de neutrinos con el acelerador J-PARC, situado en la costa Este de Japón, a orillas el Pacífico y detectarlos, después de recorrer los 295 km que los separa, con el Super-Kamiokande, un enorme detector situado en el interior de una montaña, junto a la ciudad de Toyama, en la costa Oeste de Japón.

Roy is a high energy particle physicist currently involved with the ATLAS project at CERN Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. He has also been part of the T2K project in Japan and is current pursuing graduate work in high energy physics at Technion Israel Institute of Technology. Previously, Roy has studied at Imperial College of London. Roy and Prakhar talk about CERN LHC, High energy physics, quantum physics and cosmology.

Les résultats de cette année viennent d'être publiés, bien qu'encore intermédiaires, ils s'orientent doucement vers un résultat fondamental : la brisure de la symétrie CP dans les neutrinos, en d'autres termes : les neutrinos et les antineutrinos ne se comporteraient pas de la même façon...

La nouvelle la plus intéressante qui nous soit arrivée durant ces trois dernières semaines de torpeur estivale est sans aucun doute cette présentation de résultats de l'expérience T2K sur l'oscillation des neutrinos et des antineutrinos, faite le 6 août à Chicago lors de la conférence internationale ICHEP 2016.

Cristina pensa à Kiyoshi. Lui pouvait lui fournir des informations, et le connaissant, il se ferait un plaisir de l'aider dans sa recherche. Elle voulait savoir s'il pouvait exister des liens entre les activités d'assainissement qui avaient lieu près de la centrale accidentée de Fukushima et Gazkron Fluids, voire s'il ne se serait pas passé des événements bizarres non loin du site.Cristina et Kiyoshi étaient restés amis depuis qu'ils s'étaient rencontrés au cours d'une grande réunion scientifique sur les neutrinos qui s'était déroulée au Japon deux ans plus tôt. Kiyoshi avait son âge, et lui aussi avait réussi à intégrer une équipe de recherche après sa thèse.Kiyoshi Kitano travaillait toujours dans les neutrinos, sur une expérience qui s'appelait T2K. Elle consistait à envoyer un faisceau de neutrinos produits au centre nucléaire de Tokaï, où il travaillait, vers le grand détecteur de neutrinos de SuperKamiokande qui se trouvait à plusieurs centaines de kilomètres de là, pour étudier comment les neutrinos oscillent d'une saveur à l'autre au cours de leur trajet. C'était le même type d'expérience auquel Cristina avait participé au cours de son post-doc franco-italien avant de rejoindre XENO1000. Ils s'étaient liés d'une belle amitié lors d'une soirée mémorable où ils avaient rejoué des scènes mythiques du film Lost in Translation où Cristina s'était prise pour Scarlett Johansson le temps d'une nuit.(...)

A Japanese particle physicist struggles to find his place (and learn English) in the American midwest. Teppei Katori is an experimental particle physicist and a lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. His major interest is neutrino physics, especially neutrino interaction measurements on nuclear targets, and tests of space-time symmetry with neutrinos. Currently he works on two neutrino projects: the T2K experiment in Japan, and the IceCube experiment in Antarctica.
