Welcome to another episode of ADHD Support Talk Radio, the longest-running podcast dedicated to helping adults with ADHD. Hosted by Tara McGillicuddy, a woman with ADHD and a long-time advocate for the ADHD community, this episode takes a deep dive into one of the most common struggles for individuals with ADHD—productivity and planning. As we usher in 2025, many people find themselves facing the overwhelming task of setting goals and creating a plan for the year. However, for those of us with ADHD, this process can be a source of stress, self-doubt, and procrastination. In this episode, Tara addresses a listener's question about how to approach planning for the year ahead, breaking down big goals into manageable tasks. The listener shares their frustration with underestimating how long tasks will take, and how this leads to a mad dash to finish things, often leaving them disappointed with the results. This self-criticism and limiting belief mindset can be a major roadblock for anyone with ADHD trying to plan effectively. Tara's response may surprise you: she suggests that sometimes, it might be best to stop planning entirely—or at least not in the traditional sense. Planning can be overwhelming, and for those with ADHD, it can often lead to more stress and a sense of paralysis. Tara explains that while planning has its place, trying to plan for an entire year, especially with ADHD, may not be the best approach. Instead, Tara encourages listeners to focus on the present and work in smaller, more manageable chunks of time. She explains that our brains can only handle so much at once. When we try to plan for 365 days, it's no wonder we feel overwhelmed. Instead, Tara advises starting with just one task at a time and creating a rough guide or schedule for the day. This allows for flexibility, acknowledging that things like energy levels and unexpected events will impact how much can be accomplished on any given day. She highlights the importance of factoring in padding, or extra time, to avoid stress and accommodate life's unpredictability. One of Tara's key suggestions is to use action blocks—short bursts of focused work. Whether it's 20-minute or 30-minute intervals, these shorter sessions help combat the overwhelm of a long to-do list. Tara recommends setting a timer during these action blocks, with the timer placed in a visible area, to help stay focused and accountable. She explains that having a visual timer can be a powerful tool for ADHD minds, providing structure while keeping the focus on the task at hand. Additionally, Tara encourages flexibility with time. When estimating how long a task will take, it's important to add some padding to the estimate. Whether it's a phone call or a larger project, things rarely take the exact amount of time we anticipate. By adding extra time, you give yourself the freedom to adjust without the added pressure of unrealistic expectations. Throughout the episode, Tara acknowledges that the goal is not to be perfect but to make progress. It's about tweaking strategies and making small changes that work for you. She also shares exciting news about her upcoming 5 Day Action Challenge and a free Ask Me Anything webinar on January 13th, where she'll dive deeper into ADHD productivity strategies. Tune in to this episode for practical, ADHD-friendly advice on how to approach your productivity goals for 2025. In this episode of the ADHD Support Talk Radio podcast, co-host Lynne Edris takes a unique perspective on common struggles experienced by adults with ADHD, namely poor follow-through, procrastination, and avoidance. Lynne challenges the conventional view of procrastination as laziness or a character flaw and instead explores it as a behavioral habit born of a coping mechanism that has gone awry. This episode originally aired in April of 2021. Lynne delves into the underlying reasons behind procrastination and avoidance, helping listeners understand the root causes of these behaviors. She emphasizes that individuals with ADHD often struggle with executive functioning, which can make it challenging to initiate tasks, sustain focus, and manage time effectively. Procrastination and avoidance, therefore, become maladaptive coping mechanisms that provide temporary relief from the anxiety and overwhelm associated with tasks. By reframing procrastination as a coping mechanism, Lynne helps listeners gain insight into their own patterns of avoidance and understand the emotional and cognitive factors that contribute to their struggles. This shift in perspective helps individuals move away from self-blame and judgment and towards a more compassionate and proactive approach to addressing their challenges. Throughout the episode, Lynne provides practical strategies that listeners can implement to overcome procrastination and improve follow-through. These strategies are tailored to the specific needs of individuals with ADHD and take into account the unique aspects of their cognitive functioning. By addressing the underlying causes of procrastination, such as fear of failure, overwhelm, or difficulty with task initiation, listeners can develop effective tools and techniques to enhance their productivity and consistency. In this compelling episode of ADHD Support Talk, seasoned productivity coach and co-host Lynne Edris dives into a crucial topic for unlocking success with ADHD: the intricate relationship between success and failure. Drawing from her personal journey and decades of professional experience, Lynne challenges the conventional notion that "failure" stands in direct opposition to "success." Instead, she invites listeners to view failure as an essential building block on the path to their own success and achievement. By examining our tendency to fixate on what isn't going well, Lynne reveals how valuable lessons often remain hidden within these experiences. She emphasizes that the journey toward successful, lasting change is seldom a linear one; but full of hurdles, setbacks, and detours. These very challenges, Lynne argues, are instrumental in solidifying personal growth and transformation on the way to unlocking success. True failure, she suggests, lies in the refusal to learn when circumstances don't align with our plans—an opportunity for growth squandered. This episode introduces a profound shift from the traditional success-versus-failure mindset to one that centers on continuous learning. It forms a core element of Lynne's daily setup and review process, a key feature of her Unleashed 90-day Time Management program: Listeners are invited to reflect on their day and consider the insights gained or rekindled. By adopting a perspective of growth and learning, Lynne asserts that individuals with ADHD can transform their journeys in remarkable ways, impacting every aspect of their pursuit of a more fulfilling life. Tune in to this thought-provoking episode and embark on a journey of redefining success and embracing the power of learning on the path to success with ADHD! ADHD is often blamed for communication breakdown, when it's really a matter of differing communication or behavioral styles between individuals. Co-host Lynne Edris is joined by Bonnie Mincu to discuss how differing styles and assumptions can create misunderstandings, and how to avoid them in your relationships. Bonnie Mincu began her ADHD Coaching business after leaving a 23-year corporate career as executive coach, trainer and consultant. Floundering without structure and deadlines, she learned, to her surprise, that she had ADHD. This sent Bonnie into an entirely different career as an ADHD Coach and trainer. As one of the first coaches to develop training for ADHD adults, Bonnie created tools and solutions for common ADHD challenges such as chronic overwhelm, poor time sense, mental paralysis, inability to plan, disorganization and toxic shame. Bonnie's been an annual speaker and presenter in many online summits and conferences and has taught her day-long seminar on ADHD in the Workplace for NYU.
