My guest this week is the perfect person to keep our traction going for diversity and inclusion month! She is a self-proclaimed proud and positive disruptor that lives by the motto if you know better, do better. And she has had more than 20 years of experience in the fintech space, paving the way for the much-needed disruption of gender bias along the way. Zum Rails COO and Chief Diversity Officer Tara Wilson talks to us today about how to bake DEI into your DNA.For those of you who may not know, Zum Rails offers a seamless, off-the-shelf product to combine open banking with payments, creating an easier way for businesses to manage the full maturation of the transaction. Their objective is to simplify the payment space and they see each payment as a full lifecycle that includes onboarding, settlement and even management beyond the payment reconciliation. Their target markets include mortgage companies, crypto, lending an investment, and their company currently has just under 50 people – all of which are working fully remote. As for the diversity and inclusion aspect, I talked to Tara about how to build it into the company DNA. She speaks passionately about having each company know what their NorthStar is when it comes to DEI and to strive to make that journey happen while living within the values and principles of each individual company contributor. Some of the main strategies she talks about include defining core values, establishing a mission and vision, leadership training, the importance of same-place mentality, and executing all of this from the top down through open, honest, and consistent communication. Tune in this week to hear Tara talk about her journey to COO, including what it felt like to be one of the only women in fintech and the “lucky to be here” versus “deserve to be here” mentality that has motivated her passion for DEI. We also talk about how to make DEI a true company standard versus a tick box exercise, and why leaders need to understand ROI when it comes to employee well-being.
Tara Wilson was introduced to network marketing through a family member. In fact, her whole family jumped on board with the first company she joined, and they're still involved. How does Tara look at network marketing? She says, we're not selling a product. We're filling a need. She's passionate about health and wellness because that's a need she enjoys filling. She advises to make sure you're passionate about the company you're involved with. People will be drawn to your passion. She's not naïve to the fact that you'll hear the word ‘no' a lot, especially as a new Distributor. But she has some tricks to help you with that! Her advice also includes following a mentor. Go out and do what they did. Take other people succeeding in this business as proof that you can succeed as well. Tara Wilson is among the top network marketing professionals in the world. Her teams span across 16 different countries. She's built her business while raising her 3 kids. Tara has a true passion for helping new, hungry entrepreneurs reach their true potential. She holds a psychology degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Before becoming a network marketer over 15 years ago, she was a wholesale mortgage representative. Experience in the network marketing industry has allowed Tara to help countless families reach their goals. She is very passionate about the industry and about coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs to become extraordinary. Together with her husband, Chris, her 3 kids, Justin, Lexie, and Emery, and dog, Bailey, she strives to show people what is possible. When you hear the word fierce, what comes to mind? Powerful? Aggressive? Inspiring? For today's guest, Tara Wilson, fierce is her word and she's built her second business Fierce Labs on the foundation that by being fierce you are creating your life your way. You and I know that fierce is a big word, so in this episode we break down what that means, where we're stopped, and all the different ways you can access what you need for your greatness.
In this episode of K9 Conservationists, Kayla speaks with Misa Winters and Tara Wilson about laboratory analysis of scat after field collection. Science Highlight: Duration of urination does not change with body size What can we learn from our scat samples? Genetic analysis (what species, what individual, what did it eat, sex typing) Morphological diet analysis (fur, bones, teeth, plants, insects) Microbiome (bacteria and immune system interaction) Parasites, pathogen analysis (bacteria and viral disease) Hormonal analysis (stress, pregnancy, nutrition, relative age) Age (isotope data) Hormones in particular are great from scat because it is more representative of an animal over time, versus a blood sample which is a smaller snapshot in time and could be skewed by the stress of capturing or darting an animal. What questions from samples are harder/easier to answer? Easier: Species ID from mitochondrial DNA (if you have good reference data) Prey analysis (if you have a targeted strategy - e.g. it's hard to use a single genetic marker to analyze ALL prey but it depends on if you're looking for mammals, birds, fish, etc.) Pregnancy (but actually need three assays estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone which can also point to a juvenile or adult). Stress - is it nutritional or environmental (T3 or cortisol) Harder: Individual capture-mark-recapture since it uses nuclear DNA and relies on a good resampling scheme. How many animals are on the landscape? Especially when using prey data, you have to make a lot of assumptions about how many predators can eat from the same prey species. We also know that DNA from prey is not equally represented after digestion, it will depend on the tissue ingested too.
