In dieser Podcast Episode wird die aktuelle Situation in Syrien beleuchtet, die mit dem Sturz Bashar al Assads im Dezember 2024 nach über 50 Jahren Diktatur einen tiefgreifenden Wandel erfahren hat. Im Zentrum stehen verschiedene Rebellengruppen, allen voran Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), eine islamistische Gruppe, die unter der Führung von Abu Muhammad al-Julani bzw. Ahmed al Sharaa steht. Diese Gruppen sind oft ideologisch und militärisch heterogen – von islamistischen Fraktionen bis hin zu gemäßigten Kräften, die sich für ein demokratisches Syrien einsetzen. Die Absetzung Assads und die Bildung einer Übergangsregierung werfen wichtige Fragen auf, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Wahrung der Rechte von Minderheiten, wie den Kurden, Alewiten, Drusen oder den Christen, die in Syrien eine bedeutende Rolle spielen. Ein weiterer Aspekt ist der Einfluss der Türkei, die sowohl militärisch als auch politisch stark in die Syrienkrise involviert ist. Die veränderten Machtverhältnisse in Syrien haben nicht nur regionale Auswirkungen, sondern auch Folgen für Europa. Europas Rolle wird dabei vor allem im Kontext des Wiederaufbaus und des Wissensaustauschs zwischen den syrischen Flüchtlingen und den europäischen Ländern betrachtet. Besonders relevant ist der Beitrag, den Syrer, die bereits in Europa leben, durch ihre Erfahrungen und Fachkenntnisse leisten können. Ist ein nachhaltiger Frieden und eine stabile Zukunft in der Region möglich? Gäste: Thomas Schmidinger ist Lehrbeauftragter am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Universität Wien mit Schwerpunkten Naher Osten, Politischer Islam, Religion und Politik, Irak, Kurdistan, Sudan, Antisemitismus und Migration. Neben der Universität Wien lehrt Thomas Schmidinger auch als Associate Professor an der University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH) im Irak und als Lektor an der Fachhochschule Oberösterreich in Linz im Bereich Soziale Arbeit. Er ist Mitherausgeber des Wiener Jahrbuchs für Kurdische Studien, Generalsekretär der Österreichischen Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Kurdologie/ Europäisches Zentrum für kurdische Studien und Mitglied mehrerer wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften. Salah Farho ist in Damaskus geboren und aufgewachsen. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums der Rechtswissenschaften in Damaskus kam er 2015 nach Österreich, wo er als gerichtlich beeideter Übersetzer für Arabisch und Kurdisch arbeitet. So gut wie niemand hat es kommen sehen und auf einmal ging es schnell: Innerhalb von 10 Tagen hat die Rebellengruppe HTS in Syrien den aktuellen Diktator Baschar Al-Assad gestürzt und in Syrien die Macht übernommen. Für alle verwunderlich war, wie schnell das möglich war und wie wenig Gewalt dafür notwendig war. Während Foltergefängnisse geöffnet werden und sich so gut wie alle über das Ende der grausamen Diktatur der Assads freuen, ist die Zukunft des Landes noch unklar: In den Kurdengebieten im Nordosten gibt es von der Türkei unterstützte Angriffe, Israel bombardiert Ziele in Syrien und in welche Richtung genau Mohamed Al-Jolani, der Anführer der HTS, Syrien führen wird, ist unklar.

Der österreichische Sozialwissenschaftler und Publizist Thomas Schmidinger ist seit vielen Jahren im Orient unterwegs. Kaum jemand kennt etwa den Nordosten Syriens so gut wie er. Wie geht es den Christen in den von den Kurden dominierten Teilen Syriens, wie in jenem Gebiet unter der Kontrolle der Türkei und wie dort, wo islamistische Milizen das Sagen haben? - Schmidinger weiß mehr darüber. Und er hält auch mit seiner Meinung zu den westlichen Wirtschaftssanktionen gegen Syrien nicht hinter dem Berg und erklärt, warum sich die Kirchen und Christen im Westen mehr dafür engagieren sollten, dass es in Syrien zu einer Aussöhnung zwischen den Religionsgemeinschaften kommt.

Seit Wochen warten tausende Flüchtlinge an der griechisch-türkischen Grenze und hoffen, dass sie es nach Griechenland schaffen.
