This week, we're going to be talking about PTSD. I say this as a heads-up for listeners that we'll be dealing with some heavier subject matter. And because we're talking about such a serious subject, I think you'll understand why the copy for this episode isn't as chipper as usual. PTSD is something that I think a lot of us have come to associate with either combat veterans or the victims of violence, but any mental health professional will tell you that there is no litmus-test for trauma. But of the many professions that interact with trauma, few of them do so as regularly as that of a firefighter, and unfortunately my guest today had to find this out the hard way. After becoming a firefighter at the age of 19, Nick Wingo quickly realized he was not yet equipped to handle the Death part of the life-and-death situations he was being called to help in. And after years of towing the line and pushing down his pain, Nick finally broke. And as he has put the pieces back together and come to understand his PTSD, he is on a mission to share his story and help other first responders seek the help the need and deserve. The author of Amazon Bestseller, Building Grit: Fighting the Fires of PTSD, Nick and I discuss how leaders can recognize warning-signs in themselves, why our blindspots usually end up being the things we see most clearly in others, and the need to dispel the myth that there is a threshold for who gets to struggle. I hope you enjoy the show. **************If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. Nick is able to share his story of being a firefighter, which has taught him many core values, such as gratitude, resilience, intuition, and tenacity. These values have allowed him to persevere through difficult times and find his true identity. Through my struggles and hardships he has learned that it is possible to overcome and find joy in life. He is now dedicated to helping others and provides an open ear to anyone in need. Enjoyed the episode? On average, 100 firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty. However, that number doubles when it comes to firefighters who end up committing suicide. That is an alarming leap, and that is only a number that has been recorded. There are far more that go on to end their lives and are never recorded. The leading cause of suicide happens to be PTSD. In today's episode, I interview Nick Wingo a retired firefighter and PTSD survivor as he shares his hero's quest that lead him to form Build Grit where he guides men on how to fight the fires of PTSD. Have you seen things in your life that you can't unsee? Do you have a path to finding your way out of these images? No one wants to see the horrors of life yet some occupations are inherent to them. For the most part, these occupations are predominantly male and without a resource to help them, many struggles with parts of their career while others feel the only way out is to end it all. But there is hope as my guest today is about to share his story. Nick Wingo spent the early part of his life as a firefighter paramedic where he saw things that most people could never even understand. After retiring as a firefighter Nick has put his passion into conquering his PTSD and helping others to do the same. He then began coaching men through some of the battles we face by becoming in sync with our inner selves and practising breathing techniques. Nick was able to heal himself from trauma and uses his trauma as a factor in helping out men today. In this episode we discuss... how to peel back the layers and heal your trauma how to manage panic attacks the pillars of GRIT how to get back into alignment with yourself breaking through limiting beliefs To reach Nick:

Training in martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, wrestling, & Muay Thai is my outlet for improving my mental health and becoming a better person. Want to download our new ebook that teaches 7 lessons learned from the martial arts? Click here and enter your email when the popup prompts you to do so. On this twenty-sixth episode of the podcast, I chat with Nick Wingo. Nick specializes in helping people master their breathing. Nick is a breathwork coach who helps his students understand how to incorporate powerful breathing exercises into their daily routines. After spending his youth training in combat martial arts like Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu, Nick became a firefighter. Motivated by service, Nick chose to become a first responder and help his community. Life on the front lines of service can bring demons after retirement. Eighteen years of firefighting left Nick with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a host of other mental health issues. Through discovering the power of breathwork, Nick was able to change his life and pull himself out of the darkness. Now, after discovering the power of Soma breathwork, Nick has dedicated himself to sharing this life changing information with humanity. On this episode, you will learn about the basics of Soma breathwork and why you should incorporate daily breathing practices into your life. We dive into the science behind the breath and why practices like chanting mantras can be powerful ways to boost oxygen production. This is an episode you do NOT want to miss. Favorite Quote: "Science has found that when you 'OM' chant, you produce 15x as much oxygen as when you breathe through your mouth." In this episode we catch up with fellow podcaster, author and retired firefighter/paramedic Nick Wingo. Nick has 20 years experience protecting and serving in the mountains of Colorado as both a firefighter and a paramedic. Since retirement, Nick uses his time, influence and resources to help others overcome the effects of PTSD. Starting as a fireman at the age of 18, Nick has seen a lot. We even touch on his short accidental career as a stripper! This show wouldn't be complete without the "hot fireman" story. Nick hosts his own podcast called Building Grit and has written a book of the same name. You dial 911 and they show up. They don't wear capes, but their yellow jackets very well could be just that. They are trained to be fearless, quick problem-solvers, and they willingly put their lives in danger with no guarantee of coming home to their families. They are the firefighters and paramedics of our great nation. But there's a darker tale that reveals an epidemic where our beloved protectors have no one to rescue them. Nick Wingo is a former firefighter paramedic who retired to dive headfirst into his PTSD by creating Building Grit, a program focused on helping other firefighter paramedics address the big hairy elephant in the room……PTSD. Not only is he the Founder Building Grit, but he's also the Founder of the Non-Profit, Gifting Grit, focused on helping firefighter paramedics across the nation source mental health coverage, cover co-pays and other out of pocket expenses. Nick is a best-selling author, and podcast host. Today, Jeff and Nick waste no time kicking down the door on the mental health crisis amongst firefighter paramedics in our country. Nick shares the number of “line of duty” deaths compared to the staggering estimate of suicides amogst this unique group of individuals. Jeff voices his outrage at the mental health system and Nick shares the slow process of bringing this all to light by simply doing one simple thing……….finding help for himself. He talks candidly about his experiences as a firefighter and specific instances that, over time pushed him over the edge and into treatment for PTSD. Jeff and Nick discuss drinking, suicide, and how it's all connected to firefighting paramedics. Gifting Grit is a non-profit started by Nick to help others like himself secure mental health treatment before it's too late. What You'll Learn: The number of Nick's friends who died in non-duty related situations What inspired Nick to start Gifting Grit during treatment One big hairy audacious goal Nick has as a result of being spit out by the organizational structure within the firefighting paramedic organization The effects of his Nick's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and what he battles with on a weekly basis Nick's plan for a 3-Day event to help people through PTSD based on things that are currently working for them When Nick discovered he was shoving his emotions deep down Depression Anxiety Effects of Alcohol and PTSD What happens to the brain when you can't get out of your own way and how to solve it doing one simple thing Cyclic natures and how to break them How many firefighters die each year from “Line of Duty” related circumstances The estimated suicide rate within the community of firefigher paramedics One multifaceted focus that has helped Nick live an enhanced life on his journey to help a million people And much more! FAVORITE QUOTE: “I should never have to be a dime out of pocket if my job was the one that caused me this mental health stress, nor should anybody else. And let's be honest, the drinking and drug problems come as a direct result of the stresses of the job. They're a direct result of the trauma they deal with. Now, do we all have a choice in how we deal with it? Absolutely. But if you're not taught tools or ways to deal with this (trauma), you're going to end up in this position.” -Nick Wingo Connect with Nick: Facebook Instagram Nick Wingo's Website How to Get Involved: Addicted to Winning connects listeners through stories that prove why mindset matters. Jeff Brekken was working a 60-hour week on his family's farm by the time he was 10. When he wasn't helping with the harvest, he was at the hockey rink. Jeff's early life experiences taught him he needs to be either all-in or all-out. In 2000 he started a single-family home construction business and by 2008 he was looking for his next big thing. On today's episode of the Becoming the Big Me podcast your host Djemilah Birnie has another special guest for the great conquest project, Dannah Macalinga Pedrigal. Dannah is a freelance VA based in the Philippines. Before she decided to work home based as a freelance VA, she worked in three big companies in the Philippines. When she graduated from college she was hired right away by a direct selling company and stayed there for 4 years. From an Admin Clerk, she became an Operations System Specialist which is a supervisory position. Then she was assigned to a different city which was far from away, you could only travel there by air and by sea. It was her first time being away from her family and being independent. When she got there she fell in love with the place and decided to switch to a new job for “greener pastures”. She applied to one of the biggest Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) companies in the Philippines that handled companies in the US from Telecommunication, Credit Cards, Banks, Gaming Consoles and Ecommerce. She was hired and got the job as Sales Representative of an ecommerce account then was transferred and promoted to Technical Support Professional II of a known gaming console account. Everything was doing well and her life was sailing smoothly until November 8, 2013 came. I encountered Dannah this year, 2021, in the midst of a global pandemic while she was pregnant with her now daughter. She began working for Becoming the Big Me and has been a massive blessing to my life. She helped me organize all of my assets for the Becoming the Big Me Podcast and was crucial in the back end side of the launch. If it wasn't for Dannah I do not believe that I would have been able to get the Becoming the Big Me Podcast to rank in the top 100 in its category in the USA and multiple other countries during its launch and if it wasn't for her continued support I am not sure I would have made it into the top 1.5% globally according to Listen Notes reporting. Through Jennifer's journey she has had to learn the lesson of living life for herself and overcoming the obstacle that so many find themselves in, of living their life for others. Jennifer would put it, her transformation wasn't in the form of one major event, it wasn't instant, more so, it was a slow burn, a transformation over the journey of life. Gradually learning, gradually becoming more steadfast to the vision, becoming better and better each day of being free from the trap of others opinions. This is Jennifer's story. On today's episode of the Becoming the Big Me podcast your host Djemilah Birnie has another special guest for The Great Conquest project. Djemilah was so impressed by Russell's story and she is so excited to share it with you. Russell is the founder of Invictus Life where he helps men to find their way back to their inspired masculine soul, the soul that was sacrificed in the pursuit of being who they thought they were supposed to be. Russell helps his students to see that they are Unconquerable and that they have the power to create whatever reality they desire. Russell has an incredibly powerful story of conquest that will inspire so many people. When Russel was in the prime of his career, he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. He spent 6 years on the transplant list, while maintaining a Chief Actuary (act-chew-ary) role and providing for a family of 7. Overcoming the disease through a liver transplant was really only the first battle for Russel, for what he uncovered during his physical recovery was a soul & identity that had been buried in through his efforts to please others and do what he thought was "right". The real conquest for Russel was the conquest over the battle that emerged as he revived his soul. This is Russell's story. In today's episode of the Becoming the Big Me Podcast Djemilah Birnie chats with Peter Neilson. Peter is an accomplished automotive professional with over 15 years of experience in the automotive industry, his business now certified auto consulting caters to small repair shops, new emerging products and hybrid vehicles. Due to his extensive knowledge of hybrid vehicles, Peter has become known as the hybrid guy. Peter has the ability to take an unhealthy automotive repair shop and transform them into a healthy and thriving business. Because of his skills, Peter can produce productive and long lasting results for business owners, Peter has always been focused on helping others and his own continual learning. But he hasn't always had the sense of confidence and a sense of purpose that he does today. On Peter's journey of becoming he has faced many obstacles and failures along the path, yet he has continued to persevere and keep going. In addition to the professional hurdles that Peter had to face, something happened in his personal life that triggered a search for purpose and meaning. Through the darkness Peter rose up and instead of allowing the sadness to paralyze him- he turned it into fuel. For we do not have control of every situation that happens to us, yet when we are on the path of Becoming we understand that we do have power over how we move forward from it. This is Peter's story. At 18, Nick Wingo thought he'd struck gold in his new career as a firefighter. It was the period just after 9/11, and it felt like he was doing something purposeful with his life: “We were America's heroes,” he says. Then, the deaths started — and so did the impact they'd ultimately have on him. Within his first few months as a firefighter, he responded to a call that involved a dead infant. Afterward, he climbed back into the fire truck alongside the lieutenant, who turned to him and said: “You'd better get ready, because that's what your career is going to look like.” He wasn't wrong. Ultimately, Nick would develop PTSD from his time as a firefighter and leave the field on disability after 18 years. It's a diagnosis, he says, that's exceptionally common for firefighters and other first responders to develop, and yet, for the public, it's an association that usually stops short at military veterans. “People recognize post-traumatic stress for veterans,” Nick says. “It's, ‘Oh, they go to war. They see people get killed.' Well, so do I. I've seen murders. I've seen brutal things that I cannot unsee. And people don't understand that.” That's a narrative that Nick, with his new book “Building Grit: How to Fight the Fires of PTSD And Come Out Stronger On The Other Side,” aims to change. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, he and Gary talk about their activism for first responders' mental health, how CBD intersects with that, and the reality of what firefighters go through. What You'll Learn: Why Nick is passionate about ensuring “no firefighter has to pay for their own mental health services ever again” What Gary heard from firefighters and police officers with PTSD after giving them CBD Why it's so imperative we change the way we talk about the 300-500 firefights who commit suicide every year And much more! Favorite Quote: “Just because we're all experiencing lack of sleep and not sleeping well does not mean that it's normal.” — Nick Wingo Connect with Nick: Building Grit Facebook Instagram YouTube How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike.
