In what ways do you feel a spouse/partner can influence our ability to create? Rewilding is a concept that has gained much popularity in recent years as the pandemic has peeled back the layers of industry and challenged our global relationships with consciousness, our priorities, and our politics. There are many conversations to be had about rewilding our external lives through learning to garden or farm, by taking a closer look at how fast we're moving as a world, and by choosing to raise our children in ways that benefit their spirits and their wholeness. But what about this idea of rewilding the idea internal aspects of society? Our thoughts, our inner landscape, our conscious minds, our mental wholeness, and our souls? How can our ways of orienting to the world be benefited by rewilding the inner landscape of the soul? It felt incredible to sit down with Bethaney Wilkinson and discuss these things. While we didn't come away with concrete step-by-step answers, together we did ask some incredibly valuable questions that we hope will spur you on in your own relationship with these matters. About Bethaney Wilkinson Bethaney Wilkinson (she/her) holds space for change as a writer, facilitator, leadership coach and spiritual director. She is author of The Diversity Gap: Where good intentions meet true cultural change (HarperCollins Leadership), and hosts a podcast by the same name, which has been downloaded over a quarter of a million times worldwide. She is also the lead writer and curator of A More Beautiful Way, a blog and podcast series dedicated to slowing down, simplifying, and finding the Sacred in our everyday lives. She has dedicated more than a decade to exploring the intersections of community, racial justice, and social change—specifically in the organizational context. When she's not leading racial equity efforts for teams, or sitting with folks exploring their spiritual journeys, you can find her stewarding a one acre homestead called Cedar Wilde  with her husband Alex and their two dogs, Isla and Bear.

In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and Bethaney Wilkinson as we talk about her life's recurring theme—the diversity gap. Bethaney shares what you can expect in her new book entitled The Diversity Gap: Where Good Intentions Meet True Cultural Change, how she believes solutions translate to communities, and how she does her work in race and equity despite it being an extremely taxing endeavor to be in.Are your intentions only a starter? In Bethaney's book The Diversity Gap: Where Good Intentions Meet True Cultural Change, she said, "when it comes to diversity, our good intentions are only beginning." In her quote, Bethaney talked about the short-sightedness of intentions. The tendency of intentions to be the end all be all for people. In diversity and inclusion, this consolation is often used as a band-aid when the attempt wasn't received or didn't work. And that's the problem. The problem arises when the reaction becomes "oh, well, I meant well" instead of "what needs to shift?" This isn't about dismissing peoples' intentions, Bethaney believes. Transformation needs to be looked at seriously when it comes to race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.About Bethaney Wilkinson:Bethaney Wilkinson is a world-class facilitator. She is host of the popular podcast, The Diversity Gap, and is the founder of The Diversity Gap Community, an online learning platform for leaders seeking to pair their good intentions for diversity with true cultural change. 9:29 – Bethaney 101 She is a facilitator and racial justice educator who helps teams be more supportive of diverse groups of people. 10:14 – What led to her passion? She ended up doing the work after trying to support people in her community. She wanted to fill the gaps and help people work together. 12:41 – Challenges organizations faced One of the biggest challenge was many leaders go-to action was let me diversify my team and board. That intention was positive, but they weren't asking If their culture supported diversity. 14:38 – Media hype versus real change If you're not experiencing the harmful effects of racism, it is very easy to turn it on and off. Think of it like an iceberg. What you see is diversity, and most people stop there. Below the water is where actual transformation and reconciliation happens. 19:53 – Creating culture change Culture is the stories we tell ourselves – who is the victim and who is the hero? Focus on values, the ways you behave and what you prioritize. 26:03 – Fear of making mistakes You will say the wrong thing, and you will do the wrong thing. After you get over that hump, the real work is being willing to receive feedback. 31:15 – Receive feedback A good lesson for any leader is to be able to receive feedback. 37:22 – Get to know you Best concert she's ever attended? Rising Appalachia FEATURED QUOTES Do you want to do the hard work it takes to maintain that relationship? How are we willing to change to adapt to actually serve people who we're not practiced at serving? If you're not experiencing the harmful effects of racism, it is very easy to turn it on and off. You will say the wrong thing, and you will do the wrong thing. After you get over that hump, the real work is being willing to receive feedback. The gap between good intentions and real change is a big one to fill. While many companies are interested in making their workplaces more diverse, it's not enough to simply want more inclusion. Thankfully, that's what our next guest is working to solve. Bethaney Wilkinson is the author of The Diversity Gap, a guide to instituting diversity efforts in workplaces. Bethaney's lived experience as a Black woman in Georgia has been a driving force in writing The Diversity Gap. Bethaney, Lee, Reuben and Hazel are passionate travelers who love adventure. She shares tales from the road and awesome travel tips. You can follow Bethaney on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. PRICELINE TIPS  To figure out what hotels are offered in the Express Deals as "mystery" hotels, find an express deal that looks good and look at the price, percent you are saving and the amenities of the hotel. Then do a normal search on Priceline and sort by the star rating, amenities and location offered by the Express Deal. Then look at the percentage off and try to figure out which hotel it is. Stick to properties that are rated 8+ by previous guests. With Name your own price, you typically get the same hotels that are on the Express Deals so work out which Express Deals are interesting first and figure out what hotels they are, and then offer $10-15 less than the Express Deal. If it is not accepted, you can add another location to bid again to keep trying to see what their acceptable price point is. When you rebid, raise your bid by $5.00, up until you get to the Express Deal price. Priceline works very well in big cities like New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, etc., but there are not too many Express Deals in smaller towns and cities. Primarily use Priceline for shorter stays vs. stays greater than three nights. Use the app for last minute deals. Sign up for the cash back rewards site where you get 5% cash back reward on Priceline bookings. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Bethaney loves her Skechers Go Walk shoes. She also loves dresses because they are easy. Bethaney also recommends keeping the family in similar colors, which looks great for family photos. APP OF THE WEEK Touchnote is a mobile app that allows you to turn your smartphone photos into a physical postcard so you can easily take a photo, design your postcard, add an address and text and they print and mail it for you.  MENTIONED ON THE PODCAST How to book cheap five-star hotels in Las Vegas with this amazing Priceline hack Using Priceline Express deals to save big on hotels Two ways you can save even more on Priceline   FOLLOW US AND SPREAD THE WORD! She provides a great argument against the people who think that because kids won’t remember their travels, it’s not worth taking them. Lisa Luken of Simple Joy Living has taken several long (and many short) road trips with her three children in their quest to visit every state in the US and she has some great tips for taking kids travelling. Her and Amanda also chat about some of the great lessons both the adults and kids have learned from these experiences. And finally, Adam of Bilingual Monkeys tells Amanda how his Japanese-born-and-raised kids enjoy the experience of returning to visit the American side of their family. -- Click here to listen -- Are you ready to feel better? If you’re looking for exercise that will improve your balance, your flexibility and strengthen your body as well as your mind, then meet Bethaney Pilat, Owner and Founder of Inspire Yoga Studios. In this podcast, Bethaney answers the most commonly-asked questions about yoga, tells newcomers what to expect from their first class, and fills us in on the benefits of this invigorating and life-affirming practice. _________ Many of us are looking for a way to get fit — especially in January, not to necessarily to compete in an IronMan competition or walk the red carpet, but just to be able to sit on the floor and play with our kids or grandkids, or maybe walk nine holes of golf with our friends, or get through a shift at work without being completely worn out.  That’s a rough place to be, to say, “I don’t have the mental or physical energy to do the things I want to do.” That’s like saying, "I’m not even healthy enough to try to get healthy.”  If that’s how you’re feeling, I’m really excited for you to meet my friend Bethaney, because she and her husband Adam have created a couple of places where everyone can feel welcome and encouraged to pursue their own health, in their own time, with their own individual abilities and disabilities. And all without judgement or competition or a scoreboard. Bethaney On How Inspire Yoga Studios Began Inspire is really a story of discovering connection. I was a new mom, struggling with postpartum depression. And I had lost my fire, my connection to myself. I felt like I really just needed to rekindle who I was. I loved being a mom — don’t get me wrong — but also felt like part of me had been lost along the way. I wanted to find that again. I had been a long time yoga practitioner prior to having my son, so I got back into the practice more seriously when I got to feeling a little bit better — when I felt I could get back on my mat again mentally and physically. When I started practicing again regularly, I began feeling sparks of that connection — of who I was — and I began feeling good again, like I could carry on and do more of what I was meant to do. With that, the practice gave me back what I needed in that moment, and I knew that, looking around, I wasn’t the only new mom out there. I wasn’t the only one who experienced postpartum depression. I wasn’t the only one who felt lost.  -- I knew that if I needed that sense of community and connection, there were hundreds of other people in my own neighborhood, in my own community who could benefit from the benefits of yoga as well. -- So I took it upon myself to create that place. I felt like I could create a space that other people could benefit from, as I would myself. And that’s what I set out to do. And that’s what she’s done! Brag Time I had to ask Bethaney about the awards Inspire Yoga has won over five years they’ve been in business, because it’s really kind of amazing that such a young business has seen such success. Bottom line, they’ve won Best of Denton County every year since opening, and Best of Flower Mound every year they’ve had the competition. And their teachers win Best Yoga Teacher awards year after year. So Bethaney, what’s your secret? Why are your studios winning and winning and winning? It’s obvious: It’s our teachers, and our students who feel like they’re in a wonderful place when they’re there. It just shines in every interaction you have with the people in the studios. I practice at Inspire three or four times a week, and I love all the teachers. They’re all highly trained and helpful, and the environment is open and accepting. Listeners, if you’re intimidated by the ‘gym experience’, then you need to give this a try, because it’s not a competition at Inspire Yoga. It’s an environment of acceptance, and most importantly, self-improvement. Our Questions About Yoga I’m not flexible! Can I do yoga at all? Absolutely! I tell students,
