Dave Paulsen, the current head coach for Holy Cross men's basketball team, joins this week's episode of @Notevend2 . Coach Paulsen has been coaching since the late 80's and has a ton of knowledge that he gives throughout the episode. Paulsen played basketball for @WilliamsCollege and would later lead Williams to the programs first, and only, National Championship. Paulsen finished his career coaching the Ephs with a 170-53 record- giving him the 2nd most wins in Williams basketball history. After a successful career at Williams, Paulsen moved on to coach at Bucknell University. In his first head coaching role at the Division 1 level, coach Paulsen won three Patriot League Coach of the Year awards ('11, '12 & '15). Under Paulsen, Bucknell became the first Patriot League team to win three consecutive regular season titles. Paulsen currently holds the highest winning percentage in Bucknell history (.588). A big part to Bucknell's success was the addition of future NBA player, Mike Muscala. Muscala was a two-time Patriot League POTY while competing against future NBA all-star CJ McCollum. Coach Paulsen left Bucknell after seven seasons (2008-15) to coach at George Mason University and Fordham University. Paulsen coached plenty of players that would eventually become successful professional players, including Tyler Kolek. In 2023, Paulsen took the head coaching job at Holy Cross; in his second year leading the Crusaders, he's led the program to wins over high major programs, and the teams first conference tournament win since 2019. The Crusaders are currently 5-4 with 4 more games until Patriot League play begins. Hear about Paulsen's 28-year successful career, his experience coaching future NBA players, and what went into the dominance his teams had at Williams and Bucknell. Guest: Mark Fields, former president & CEO of Ford Motor Company and chairperson at PlanviewIn 2005, Mark Fields was asked to run the Americas for the Ford Motor Company, a role he would serve in for 7 years, later becoming COO and then CEO. His wife and kids were used to relocating for Mark's job, but had just put down roots in Florida. He told them that this time, they should stay put — he would commute between Florida and Detroit every week, and call home for an hour every night. “I probably communicated more with [my wife] because we were apart, than if I was there,” Mark says. “Because if I was there, I'd come home for dinner, we'd spend a little bit of time together, I'd grunt at her, and then I'd go back to my emails, and ignore the kids. Whereas, by being away, I actually had really focused time every day to talk.”Chapters:(01:01) - The auto business in ‘89 (05:27) - The business now (08:47) - Ford vs. Trump (11:44) - Becoming a leader (17:35) - The next chapter (20:01) - Relocating the family (24:45) - Bring the kids to work (29:19) - “You have one life” (33:52) - Ego and purpose (42:06) - Retirement adrenaline (45:10) - Leading with passion (48:06) - Avoiding bankruptcy (52:55) - Grading Mark's CEO years (55:12) - The board (58:32) - Electric vehicles (01:04:50) - 24 Hours of Le Mans (01:11:36) - Selling a $580,000 car Mentioned in this episode: Harvard Business School, Ronald Reagan, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, CNBC, Volkswagen, American Icon, Donald Trump, Rutgers University, Mazda, Hertz, the Range Rover, Michigan University and Michigan Stadium, Mamoon Hamid, work/life balance, Mark McLaughlin and Palo Alto Networks, the Great Recession, GM, Chrysler, the North American International Auto Show, Bill Ford, Argo AI, Chariot, autonomous vehicles, Ford v Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari, the Ford GT, Jaguar Racing, and De Beers.Links:Connect with MarkLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm
In this episode Eric Bond and Patrick Lafontaine joins us to talk about the life in industry vs the life in academia. Eric is a PhD student at Michigan University under Max New, he works with some pretty cool esoteric cubical agda stuff. Before starting his PhD he has spent some time at the consultancy companies Two Six Technologies and 47 Degrees doing some cool functional programming and formal methods. Before that we were pals doing an internship at Galois, and even before that he finished his masters with Benjamin Delaware at Purdue, Patrick's current advisor. Patrick has just returned from his internship at AWS in the automated reasoning team. So in this episode we talk about their research, their academic and industry experiences, how's the industry looking like for opportunities in PL and all that.

Then they discuss what the best tourism attractions in Vancouver are, and reminisce about old jobs. After, they take an in depth look at the best of the worst Canucks ever, and build an "all-time worst lineup" for the Canucks. Lastly, will Ryan Kesler get a spot in the Ring of Honour? The guys talk about what that distinction means, and who in Canucks history deserves such accolades. To workshop a new opera in front of an audience is a little like agreeing to a trust fall: at some point, you've just got to surrender to the unknown and… trust. Andrea Fellows Fineberg and Anna Garcia return to the orchestral workshop for The Pigeon Keeper, a collaboration between Santa Fe Opera's Opera For All Voices (OFAV) initiative and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD). Andrea and Anna introduce folks to Caitlin Lynch, Assistant Professor of Music at U-M, and Jayce Ogren, Director of Contemporary Directions Ensemble at U-M, the visionary duo responsible for bringing The Pigeon Keeper to the campus. Together they go behind the scenes of OperaLab, their new initiative to connect SMTD students with opportunities to workshop and perform contemporary music from living composers. They also explore how the themes of the opera connect to modern realities with student musicians; learn about community support for refugees, asylum seekers, and others seeking humanitarian protection with Freedom House Detroit; and find out what advice principal artists would give to future cast members. The episode ends with audience reflections on loss, exclusion, and opera as a catalyst for hard conversation. “The arts,” said one workshop goer, “can facilitate tangible action, dialogue, and change that can come from this emotionally resonating work.” It's insights like this that keep OFAV commissioning new works and collaborating in inventive ways. It takes a village - and multiple revisions! - to mount a modern, original opera. Key Change co-hosts Andrea Fellows Fineberg and Anna Garcia journey to an orchestral workshop for The Pigeon Keeper, a first for Opera For All Voices (OFAV)! Imagine a stage filled with an eight-member student orchestra, four principal singers, and a women's chorus. Drop in the composer, librettist, and members of the OFAV team. Truncate the rehearsal period and invite an audience for a live presentation plus a feedback session. Now, you understand the excitement and angst surrounding an orchestral workshop. Andrea reconnects with Stephanie Fleischmann, librettist, and David Hanlon, composer, the imaginative duo behind this poignant story of home and hospitality in a time of conflict and need, along with Kelly Kuo, music director & conductor. We also hear from the extended community of artists and students of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, who are shepherding The Pigeon Keeper from page to stage–with Daniel Millan, clarinetist; Nathan Harah, Kosmo; Ava Hawkins, ensemble; Jamiyah Hudson, ensemble; and Rada Grin, mother of Nathan Harah. “As people who've been fully invested in this project, it's often very difficult to be objective about what's actually being communicated [by the piece],” says Kelly, who notes that university collaborations, like this one with the U-M, provide the creative team with invaluable contextual information. Workshops also allow students to interact with professional companies. “The chorus is made up of undergraduates volunteering time outside their own classwork and their other choruses,” marvels Kelly. “It says a lot about their commitment to this project.” “It's speaking to their hearts,” observes Stephanie. “That makes me feel like the message of the piece is reaching all people.” But how did the audience respond? You'll have to wait until our next episode to find out. Thank you to Caitlin Lynch, Jayce Ogren, and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. John continues "they provided the essentials for us, but if there were things we wanted above and beyond that, they needed to be earned." HIs parents were good parents who taught their children to help others, be active in the community, volunteer for others, etc. "They had very high expectations for the person they wanted me to become in life".John had a tragic accident when he was a young boy. In the second half of our candid conversation with Judge Lauren Lake, we begin with the game "OBJECTION or SUSTAINED" sparking lively debates on fashion choices of celebrities like Melania Trump and Shannon Doherty and discussing the impact of legendary figures like Norman Lear. Throughout our show we circle back to themes of personal growth, relationships, and life's challenges. Judge Lauren Lake shares her experiences and views on dating, remarriage, and the intricacies of blending a new partner into a family dynamic. The discussion expands to cover broader topics like the importance of checking egos and fostering support in relationships, with her honor providing her unique insights. Runway Rundown is another highlight where Pol, Patrik, and Judge Lauren offer their frank and often humorous critiques of celebrity fashion. Their commentary on Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey's outfits showcases their keen eye for style and detail. A core focus of this episode is Pol's mystical talents, a gift he attributes to his Armenian heritage. These abilities are showcased vividly during the unique "Coffee Reading" segment, where Pol astonishes everyone, especially Judge Lauren, with his precise and personal insights. He not only reads into her past and present but also foretells future opportunities, such as a TV project that resonates deeply with Judge Lauren. Pol's guidance on the sentimental value and proper care of her father's Michigan University class ring adds an intimate and heartfelt dimension to the session. The episode is not just about entertainment; it's a journey into the depths of intuition, emotional connections, and the unspoken bonds we share with our loved ones. Pol's readings and the discussions that follow reveal a side of Judge Lauren that resonates with many, highlighting the universal themes of love, loss, and the pursuit of personal fulfillment. As the show wraps up, listeners are left with a blend of emotions, from the joy of laughter to the introspection triggered by Pol's readings. Judge Lauren's parting words about where to find her work serve as a gentle reminder of the diverse paths our lives take, all interwoven with the threads of fate and choice. 5 Cs of History, Contingency #1 of 4. The U.S. healthcare system is the way it is because of decisions made by people at various points in the last century. America's healthcare issue is the result of a series of interconnected decisions and events and catastrophes. This episode is a part of our 5 c's of history episode and today we are exploring contingency. Contingency is “The idea that every historical outcome depends on a multitude of prior conditions; that each of these prior conditions depends, in turn, upon still other conditions; and so on. The core insight of contingency is that the world is a magnificently interconnected place. Change a single prior condition, and any historical outcome could have turned out differently.” So we're going to do an overview of the American health insurance system and touch on some key points along the way. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 10 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Diving into our first interview this week, we have Montana Dobrovich-Fago talking with Patrick Smith, the head of visualization at MPC Visualization Studios, a major visual effects company in Los Angeles. Through the interview we learn about Patrick's past studying computer animation at Savannah College of Arts and Design, to his current role at MPC where he has worked on projects such as Avengers: Infinity War, Nope, Prehistoric Planet, and Emmy award winning Chip ‘N' Dale: Rescue Rangers. Patrick discusses what it is like to Head the visualization department including where he finds creative freedom in the position, and how he and his department navigated shifts in the industry due to COVID19. They conclude with some tips and tricks from Patrick for creatives hoping to navigate a similar career. Gianna Ormonde brings us to a close this week with her interview of Bloom Nutrition's Head of Creative Marketing, Nareh Vartanian. Ormonde leads in with Vartanian's education background by discussing her degree in Creative Advertising from Michigan University. The pair go on to discuss how Nareh started as a Graphic Designer for Bloom and what the journey then was to Head of Creative Marketing with this growing company. They also discuss what is entailed in being the head of a creative department, including some of the struggles and challenges she has encountered in the role. The pair end the interview with Vartanian reflecting on some personal experiences and offering insight and advice to those hoping to carve out a career in the Creative and Cultural Industries.

How Can Ultrasound destroy cancer cells and even increase immune response elsewhere? Are there any implications for a resonant field based understanding of matter? In this episode we have the fascinating invention of Histotripsy (https://histotripsy.umich.edu/), the non-invasive destruction of cancer cells using ultrasound to look into. Alongside the other headline news that bioengineers are also using acoustics to pattern replacement heart tissue, makes the field of bioacoustics one of the most exciting for the future of medicine. It is of course the implications of this for the resonant vibrational nature of matter that make this of interest to us on the show, as we attempt to get closer to a true understanding of the nature of reality through our shows on the implications of Einstein's ‘matter is energy' findings and quantum mechanics. We get into this after 45 mins or so. We are lucky enough to be speaking today with one of the inventors of Histotripsy technology, Zhen Xu, Associate Professor and Graduate Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Michigan University. She's won many awards for her research, including from the American Heart Association and from the National Institute of Health. 00:00 Intro 07:25 Destroying Cancer Cells with Ultrasound 08:50 Issues with tissue heating and toxicity in other non-surgical techniques 09:50 Cavitation: the creation, expansion and collapse of bubbles - gas pockets in the tissue 11:40 Ultrasound propagates through the vibration of tissue particles 13:36 Acoustic Scalpel: Cavitation bubbles are highly visible on ultrasound imaging, for high accuracy treatment 14:45 No spread of tissue heating, so no healthy tissue damage 16:00 The discovery happened by mistake 19:45 She developed new devices for a new phenomenon 21:40 Toxicity of the destroyed tumour is removed from the body in a few months 24:30 Immune response to tumerous cells after treatment, possibly from the debris 25:40 Live cancer cells alter signal pathways to confuse the immunes system 28:00 But once dead the the debris can are noticed by the immune system 29:45 Future tumours or relapses in different locations are picked ups by the immune system 33:30 Treating neurological disease, brain blood clots and epilepsy too, across the skull protection 40:30 Patterning and forming new cell structures using sound (Stanford Med research): Structuring vs destructing using sound 44:30 Resonant frequency in various types of matter and biological tissue 45:00 No evidence from the lab for a resonant theory of tissue/organ health 48:50 Nikola Tesla, “If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration” 52:00 The implications of a wider wave-length fields, for the creation and maintaining of matter and biological life's structure 56:30 Bioelectric component in organ development (TUFTS Study): The formation of life depends on more than DNA 1:01:00 A field based understanding of physical matter, rather than matter generating fields References: Dr Zhen Xu 'Histotripsy: the first noninvasive, non-ionizing, non-thermal ablation technique based on ultrasound' Paper Dr Zhen Xu - Histotripsy Group Cosmos Magazine Article on Histotripsy Dr Cliff Cho, Dr Zhen Xu - “...Immune responses that enhance cancer immunotherapy” Paper Sean Wu and Utcan Demerci, Stanford Medical School, Engineering Heart tissue using Bioacoustics Havana Syndrome Nikola Tesla quote, “If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration” Micheal Levin, TUFTS university, “changes in bioelectric signals cause tadpoles to grow eyes in back and tail”

Continuing my look back at some trailblazing women in the world of sports, today I look at Janet Guthrie who was the first woman to compete in a NASCAR Winston Cup race and the Indianapolis 500. She went to college and graduated from Michigan University in 1960 and worked in research and development as an aeronautical engineer. She then became one of the four women chosen for the scientist astronaut program with NASA but was eventually not eligible to continue chasing that dream because she didn't have a doctorate degree. When that didn't work out she jumped to car racing and had an amazing career that saw her break down barriers while struggling to secure sponsors as a woman. Despite that, she ended up being inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1980) and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006).Visit my website: saxinthemorning.com for merchandise and other links.
