Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Ken and Betsey usually discuss politics. Today, they set aside the political turmoil in the headlines and discuss Christmas. Ken's most recent Substack reflects on the central scene that is the focus of the celebration of Christmas by Christians all around the world - the Nativity. Joseph. Mary. The baby Jesus. It's a wide-ranging conversation around literalism, fundamentalism, and a contemplation of what is real and true. From Charles Dickens to Karen Armstrong, they share their childhood experiences, Ken's performance of White Christmas in a posh restaurant with a couple of carolers in Victorian dress, and neighborhood displays of inflatable Santas, Snowmen, Grinches, Mickey and Minnie, and of course, Nativity scenes. The movie kicks off with this guy selling snow globes on the street, but no one cares. We're all just too busy! Beatrice walks by on the phone, and a car splashes her boots with water. Ugh. She goes to meet her best friend, Emilia, for coffee to talk about their staycation Friendsmas. Emilia comes up with an idea—instead of a staycation, they go to Christmasland. It's a town fully devoted to Christmas, including the North Pole Inn. They make every guest feel like family. Emilia is pumped. Beatrice is less than thrilled and says, “Nah, hard pass.” But after nagging her about it a ton of times, she finally gives in.Right as they get to the Christmasland: 5 Miles sign, they get a flat. Emilia is convinced this is all part of the magic of Christmasland. Right on cue, a hot guy pulls up in a truck and offers to give them a ride. But there's one trope that hasn't happened yet… the ex-girlfriend. Enter Scarlett, Ethan's ex, who suddenly comes into town.Beatrice is finally like, “Okay, you've taken this skit too far.” Ethan is like, “I don't know what you're talking about… all of this was real.” But Beatrice isn't having it and leaves. Finally, Ethan explains to her that he's in charge of the Grinches but that he loves her. And Porter? He's real, too. And somehow, Beatrice is just totes fine with it all, and they kiss.
WELCOME TO THE MWSA PODCAST FOR THURSDAY, DEC. 5TH The ‘changing face of poverty'… it's a term that more and more organizations are using… and according to the latest ‘quality of life' survey, more Calgarians than ever before are struggling to meet basic needs. We discuss the current ‘need' in our City with Susan Brooke, “Vice-President of Community Impact and Partnerships” for the United Way Calgary and Area. Next – it's our “Mental Health Moment” with Karen Gallagher-Burt, Social Worker and Mental Health Advocate. This time out, Karen shares with us the importance of taking a ‘Mental Health Break' – and the signs you should be on the look out for - when it's time to do so. And finally – “It's the most wonderful time of year”. A time for gift giving and receiving - BUT – it's also a very busy time of the year for those ‘Grinches' known as ‘Porch Pirates'. As a consumer, do you have any ‘recourse' whatsoever if you've fallen victim to a package that's been snatched off your front porch? We tackle the topic with Ben Stickle – Professor of Criminal Justice at Middle Tennessee State University.
Christmas is calling and our heroes have failed to decorate Grapple HQ. That doesn't stop them from loading up on the jolly joy of the yuletide season with a tinsel laden extravaganza of sporting analysis and insight, as this Graptacular podcast edges toward the conclusion of its exceptionally merry first season. Santa's workshop is abuzz with speculation about the contract of Ben Hunt and the Broncos, and these two little Elves just can't help but remind one and all that THEY TOLD YOU SO. How does he fit, who goes, who stays? It's a puzzle that would have even Clark Griswold struggling to bullshit his way out of, and our noses are shining red with all the intrigue. Also stuffed under the Christmas Tree is a veritable sprawl of rugby league players vying to take one of QLD's 4 NRL teams to the North Pole of Premiership glory. The Grapplers run the rule over the top 30 squad's of each club, and speculate wildly on who fits where, when, how and what they might need to do to actually take that coveted step underneath the mistletoe of Rugby League's ultimate gift. Laurie Daley is the Marty McFly of State of Origin coaching, call us Grinches but we're not entirely sure this trip back to the future is in the spirit of the season. A semi-rare reappointment for the Blues gig has our heroes pondering if the Bellamy/Daley combo can deliver the gifts like the OG Santa, or if it's more like some old dude making a bit of pocket money by dressing up in a suit and posing for pics at the local Westfield. The NFL is a long way from Ballymore, and it's well worth a stuff into the speculative stocking to work out just what Jordy Pataia is up against in his quest to slide down the chimney of talent identification and stick the landing. Can this ultra talented Wallaby and Red wrap himself up and nestle snugly under the proverbial tree of glory? The numbers suggest he's driving the sleigh into a blizzard, but isn't Christmas all about belief? Also on the lunch table: Why are the Matildas the Kamala Harris of Aussie sport? And let's pop a christmas cracker to celebrate the career of Fatty Vautin, and pay tribute to the life of Neale Fraser, who becomes a spirit of Christmas past and leaves a sizeable bootprint in the snow of Australian tennis. It's merry, it's bright, it's the Grapple Podcast. Dig it.

She was trying to help boost morale but the station grinches had something to say about that!
Es war eine frostige Dezembernacht, als C-Bas mal wieder allein vor dem Fernseher saß, während um ihn herum die Weihnachtslichter funkelten und festliche Musik durch die Straßen drang. Doch in seinem Herzen – nichts.

Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. Frank has been resisting the urge to buy Weigel's eggnog but has been seeing online ads for Weigel's new delivery service. Frank's friend Houston Vandergriff played a shepherd in the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville. Frank met Houston when he played a toy soldier in the Nutcracker with the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association. Becca knows Houston from his volunteer work on the Culinary Arts stage at the Tennessee Valley Fair. Houston is a photographer and advocate for people with Down syndrome. He gave Frank a calendar with beautiful photos from his worldwide travels. Visit https://www.downsandtowns.com/ The Knoxville Ice Bears had to postpone their games for the weekend after the Nativity Pageant because of an equipment malfunction that prevented the ice from freezing. Frank recalls a similar problem from two years ago when Kathryn Frady was scheduled to sing the national anthem and Frank was scheduled to drop the puck but the game had to be rescheduled due to soft ice. Becca lost at Whamageddon when the song “Last Christmas” played at the Christmas party for her company's employees and their children. Frank realized that he lost his own similar game when he heard the song “Mary Did You Know.” The lyrics of the song are contradicted by the Gospel of Luke. Frank's friend Bean says “Last Christmas” is not really a Christmas song and the movie Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. They just happen to take place at Christmas. Becca believes that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Frank learned that Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was almost ruined by the Christmas decorations visible in the background of the Phoenix scenes. Hitchcock solved the problem by displaying the words “Friday, December 11” on the screen at the beginning of the film. Frank was listening to ChristmasFM when the song “The Christmas Shoes” came on. Frank is frustrated that the kid in the song left his dying mother's side to go shopping for shoes instead of spending time with her. Frank wonders what the dying woman would do with the shoes. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Becca is disappointed with Frank's opinion of kolaches, a pastry that can be filled with sweet or savory fillings. The one that Frank tried seemed like a hot dog in a bun. Becca suggests trying different fillings, perhaps with cheese. Frank and Becca were pleased with how well things went at the Karns Christmas Parade. Frank also announced the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade and watched the stream of the parade in downtown Knoxville. He feels there are too many Grinches in the parades. He also noticed an increase in Grinch decorations around town. Frank noticed some inflatable Buc-ee's Beaver decorations. Becca and her husband dislike inflatables because of how they look when deflated during the day. Frank and Becca both went to see the Christmas decorations on Gray Eagle Lane off Bob Gray Road. Frank saw on the news that the owner of the house with the most decorations became president of the homeowners association. All but two of the houses on the street are decorated. Christmas lights in Knoxville map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pi5dKsbWhgAmrJkWA Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland has moved from Smokies Stadium to Soaky Mountain Waterpark. THE 2023 GRINCH AWARDS God is the Issue Podcast with Brad Bright Today I am giving the Grinch Award to a very deserving company. I'm sure you all remember the story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas? by Dr. Seuss? The Grinch couldn't stand Christmas. so he decided he would steal it. Do you realize there are real life Grinches? People who hate Xmas. Companies who hate Xmas. They want to get rid of it. They may not look like the Grinch, but they think like him. Think about the places where you shop. Would you say that any of them “GRINCH” on XMAS? Yes, I just used “Grinch” as a verb. It's powerful as a verb. You can see it. You can feel it. You can touch it. You can smell it. You can taste it. Before you jump to conclusions, let me say that BOYCOTTING is not the answer. However, you do need good information. In light of that, today, I am going to present the Grinch Award for 2023, to the company who best personifies the spirit of the Grinch. Here are some of the criteria I used in determining the winner: Do they replace the word “Christmas” with the word “Holiday?” Do they forbid their employees from saying “Merry Christmas?” Do their websites pitch “Holiday” this-and-that, but rarely or never mention “Christmas?” Do they hijack Christmas as a platform to promote causes that offend the God of Xmas? Every company has the right to honor, ignore or demean Christmas as they see fit. However, as a consumer, you have the right to spend your money WHERE you see fit. This year as you go Xmas shopping, visit the websites of the stores that sell the products you want. Walk into the store. Look around. Do they embrace Christmas? Do they Ghost Xmas? Do they hijack Xmas? Do they sexualize Xmas? Then ask the GOD of XMAS what He wants you to do. It's between you and God. Not you and your pastor. Not you and your spouse. Not you and your doctor. Just You and GOD. You can be a part of the solution. Your money can be a tool to promote what's Good. WHERE you spend your money, is just as important as HOW you spend your money. Look for ALTERNATIVES. But remember, don't get angry at the Grinches for being Grinches. Their problem is not their behavior, their problem is their hearts. Their hearts are 3 SIZES TOO SMALL. Only God can fix that. You do your part and let God do His. I pray that you may experience the true meaning of Xmas this year. as you remember God's gift to you— a newborn baby in a manger. Remember: GOD is the issue—in every issue. This is Brad Bright. Thanks for joining me today. Please remember to like, subscribe or share this podcast. Merry Christmas!

Regardless of what you celebrate—Christmas, Hanukkah or the Winter Solstice—your plans probably include gift-giving. The CLE Foodcast Holiday Gift Episode aims to help you with that daunting task with an hour or so of suggestions for all types of gifts. I invited my friend and small biz advisor Pat Bennett to join me and we share some of our favorite local businesses, products and entrepreneurs. We recorded this episode from the Van Aken District where a collection of small, unique locally-owned businesses are thriving. Don't miss Van Aken District's Small Business Saturday activities on Nov. 25, but as you know at the CLE Foodcast we believe in shopping small, and local, all year! In this episode we share many gift ideas for you, and a number of them can be found at the Van Aken District on the "East Side." This episode was also created in partnership with Cookin' Genie, a woman-owned personal chef company that is accessible to all of us...not just the rich and famous! Special thanks to Chef Doug Katz for being a supporter of the CLE Foodcast.
