Todd McDonald is the co-founder & Chief Strategy Officer at R3. In this podcast we discuss R3's Product Vision and their views on market trends, market needs and R3's long term product investment. What is blockchain? Blockchain is a way for multiple participants to join a network and update the state of that network without having to trust someone to coordinate amongst them. For businesses, Todd sees blockchain as a way to connect with more customers and more businesses without having to worry as much around the trust factor. Three market trends Back in September of this year Todd presented at CordaCon a presentation entitled “R3 Product Vision: Market Trends, Market Needs and R3's Long-Term Product Investment.”In it he started by analysing three market trends: “Everything is an asset”, “push-pull of (de)centralisation” “Plan ahead for regulation”. Everything is an asset Blockchain has the ability to create digital scarcity. Essentially anything that you can prove ownership of can become an asset. Assets can be digitally mobile such as NFTs and/or they can be used as collateral for a loan. A digital asset of course can be the digital manifestation or representation of a real physical asset but equally it could also by a pure digital asset. Pure digital assets, such as the purchase of digital property in the Metaverse, have recently seen a bit of an explosive growth. Republic Realm purchased a $4.3 million 24x24 digital piece of land, whilst Metaverse Group in November made a $2.43 million purchase of parcels in Decentraland. Push-Pull of (de)centralisation Blockchains are custody and software. They're the ability to custody digital assets in the software layer without having the need of human beings. Todd shared with us that some of the biggest investors in this space so far have been existing intermediaries. Financial market infrastructure is heavily investing in distributed systems and blockchain. He then explains what he sees as the different facets of the decentralisation journey: You need critical mass and become successful. There needs to be a journey to attract people to a network and distribute the roles of that network. Potentially over time the network can become more distributed to decentralised. What is interesting about the crypto side is that with tokenomics all participants can be incentivised from day one onto a decentralised network Progressive decentralisation a term coined by Jesse Walden, from Andreesen Horowitz, talks about starting out within a bootstrap minimum viable ecosystem, ie. quite centralised, which as it grows can progress into a decentralised one Plan ahead for regulation Once regulation starts it pretty much only increases. This comment isn't specifically related to crypto regulation but more on financial services. There is an increasing amount of regulatory imperatives such as open banking, GDPR, and Central Securities Depository Regulation (CSDR). Modernising market infrastructure SIX digital exchange became live on the 18th of November 2021, when SIX, launched a CHF 150 million ($162 million) tokenised digital bond with Credit Suisse, UBS Investment Bank, and Zürcher Kantonalbank acting as the joint lead managers. What is interesting about this new digital market infrastructure that SIX launched off an R3 Enterprise Corda blockchainis that it leverages an existing ecosystem that SIX had. Second it has the ability to handle an asset through its lifecycle from cradle to grave. Three the settlement process, of settling into what is in effect into a central bank digital currency. What this illustrates is a way for these new tokenized assets to have higher velocity and to be able to reach across borders in a way that regulators are ok with. Corda & Conclave Early on it with the launch of Corda, it became clear that industries wanted to bootstrap networks where the founding participants wanted to control those net...

Thousands of Kia Sportages in New Zealand could be recalled over fears engines could catch fire.Just recently, more than 57,000 Kia vehicles in Australia were recalled over a potential electric fault that could lead to the vehicles catching fire, even with the engine turned off. After being made aware of this recall, Kia New Zealand has announced that it's in the process of releasing a similar recall that will include approximately "15,000 Sportage and 120 Stinger" vehicles in New Zealand. “The safety of Kia owners is paramount and, whilst there haven't been any historical incidents of this specific issue happening in New Zealand, we are proceeding with due caution and will issue a recall notice,” said Managing Director of Kia New Zealand, Todd McDonald.“We will be proactively contacting all owners of affected vehicles and asking them to take their vehicle to their nearest authorised Kia dealership for inspection and repair, the cost of which will be covered by Kia New Zealand.”The specific vehicles in question over in Australia are the Sportage models built between MY2016 and 2021, and Stinger models manufactured between MY2017-2019. Kia is yet to confirm whether the New Zealand recall will affect these same vehicles. - with text by Andrew Sluys, DrivenLISTEN ABOVE
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are shaking up traditional finance and shifting the tectonic plates of investing, but the technology underlying digital assets — blockchain — may eventually have a bigger impact on the world. Today, most applications on public chains such as Ethereum are centered around the economic layers of cryptocurrencies, such as decentralized finance (DeFi). But for a country like China, where public chain applications may not always be aligned with local regulations, permissioned chains are presenting corporations an alternative as well as greater protection from the volatility of cryptocurrency prices. “If we ran an application on a public chain, the revenue must be in cryptocurrency. Then, the cost is in cryptocurrency, the revenue is in cryptocurrency — that makes no sense,” Yifan He, the CEO of Red Date Technology — the company behind state-backed Blockchain-based Service Network (BSN) in China — told Forkast.News in a video interview. “Next year, the cost could be more than your revenue.” BSN recently scored the licensing rights to R3’s Corda Enterprise and Corda-based Open Permissioned Chain to resell the enterprise blockchain for developers in China, which would allow Chinese banks and other companies to adopt Corda’s technology “Large corporates are coming to these networks to help improve their working capital, to help finance their business day-to-day,” Todd McDonald, R3’s co-founder and chief product officer, told Forkast.News. “The volatility of having to pay for transactions in a cryptocurrency is sort of the opposite of what they’re trying to achieve.” According to He, there are at least five banks in China that have approached Red Date to build apps using Corda, or CorDapps. Corda was once a storied technology from abroad that piqued the curiosity of research centers and development teams across the mainland. These curious developers never had access to Corda’s permissioned blockchain — until now. “Now, it is very easy to access our network based on Corda, for everybody.” He said. “We really want the high school students, the colleges, to just have a class teaching how to program Corda.” As Beijing leads ahead of the pack among major nations in developing a central bank digital currency, the nation has also been building out the infrastructures for the Web 3.0 era through ambitious initiatives like BSN. “The focus within Europe is more on, what is the potential for something like a digital euro as more of a bigger project across the European Union,” McDonald said. “I would love to say that in the U.S. there is an equal amount of common investment on the infrastructure side, but it’s really being led, obviously, by the private sector.” Watch He and McDonald’s full interview with Forkast.News to learn more about how China’s BSN is looking to leverage Corda’s open-source protocol to drive further interoperability on the network, what the future might hold for BSN and other state-backed networks, the limitations of focusing too closely on cryptocurrency as an application, and more.

Tony Griffin, a renowned Irish athlete studying at Dalhousie University in Halifax, had lost his father to cancer only months prior and was cycling to raise funds for others suffering from this illness. Todd McDonald says of meeting Tony for the first time, “What struck me the most was that he was countering his extreme sadness over the loss of his father by immediately doing something to help others. I remember him telling me the best way he knew how to deal with grief was to find others suffering from something worse and help them out. That resonated with me then, and still does today.”“God is fair; he will not forget the work you did and the love you showed for him by helping his people. And he will remember that you are still helping them” . There is a controversial start to this week’s podcast as P&L’s managing director Colin Lambert ponders whether the US really does have an “innocent until proven guilty” ethos in its legal system, before debating whether a firm, no last look, order book can really be spoofed? He argues “intention to deal” is fairly easy to ascertain and also makes another one of his predictions, this time about how demand for data could stimulate activity on firm liquidity venues. Lambert is then joined by Todd McDonald, co-founder of R3, to discuss central bank digital currencies and the advance of enterprise blockchain into the market environment. McDonald discusses how moves that are only now coming to the forefront of peoples’ thinking have actually been underway for some years and explains the impact this evolution on fiscal policy as well as the more traditional areas of payments. Interestingly, McDonald feels that the latest innovations in blockchain away from CBDCs are, possibly for the first time, being commercially driven, something Lambert sees as being a vote of confidence in the new technology. This new approach could lead, McDonald believes, to a significant change in how we view financial markets and traditional assets. Simon is with Anthony Macey, Martin Bartlam, Partner and International Group Head of Finance & Projects and Fintech Global Co-Chair at DLA Piper, Noelle Acheson, CFA and Editorial Producer at Coindesk, and Todd McDonald, Co-Founder and Head of Partnerships at R3, to go over the biggest blockchain stories of the week. First up the panel looks at crypto unicorn, Bitmain considering $18 Billion IPO, one of the world's largest. The cryptocurrency mining company is filing for an initial public offering (IPO) potentially as high as $18 billion this September at a market capitalization of $40 to $50 billion. Then they discuss Facebook's Marcus stepping down from Coinbase board. David Marcus is stepping down from the board of directors at cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, citing his new assignment at Facebook leading the social media giant's blockchain strategy. Barclays denies crypto trading desk plans as staff removes ‘Digital Asset Project’ LinkedIn Info. Barclays told Cointelegraph that they have “no plans for a crypto trading desk.” As of press time, Duval and Tyrer’s LinkedIn profiles still show positions at Barclays working with 'digital assets,' but all information detailing the specifics of the jobs is not listed. Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan invest in Axoni's $32 Million funding round. Enterprise-focused blockchain startup Axoni has completed a $32 million Series B funding round led by Goldman Sachs and Nyca Partners. Also participating in the round were Andreessen Horowitz, Citi, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Y Combinator and Digital Currency Group, among others. R3 publishes a new post-quantum signature algorithm tailored to blockchains. Corda team has recently announced a new digital signature scheme that unlike RSA and ECDSA, it will remain secure even against a powerful quantum computer. The panel manage to explain quantum computing. Criminal activity in cryptocurrency has dropped 80% since 2013. An agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has noted that Bitcoin’s (BTC) role in crimes has dropped to just 10% of transactions, while transactions themselves have “grown tremendously”. Simon and Sara sit down with Noelle Acheson Coindesk, Editorial Producer and Joon Ian Wong, Coindesk, Managing Director Europe/Asia to discuss the latest blockchain news, including: Todd McDonald had a Corda, The FCA is letting Blockchain play in their sandbox, and Coinbase get their custodial party started. We kick off with Binance eyeing a $1 billlion profit with a few discussions on why Binance is bothering to release this information now. And how with such a fragile market they may not be on top for long, with many younger companies biting at their heels. There's also a few interesting points made on how regulation may interact with crypto exchanges in the near future. We move on to Coinbase targeting insitutitional investors. There are few rumours that institutional investors have long been waiting for a custodial product in crypto that fits their needs, could this be it? We also discuss Vitalik Buterin's provocative comments on centralised exchanges and if these exchanges are even a good idea. All this and more on this week's episode of Blockchain Insider.
