Chaim Finizola is the ClaimShare Director and the head of business development for emerging markets over at IntellectEU. In this podcast we discuss ClaimShare’s confidential computing solution built on top of R3’s Conclave and Corda Enterprise platform for the detection and prevention of “double dipping” fraud in the insurance industry which runs in the several billions of dollars each year.   What is blockchain? Blockchain is a technology that allows different actors to collaborate with each other without having to trust each other. Having a database in the form of a distributed ledger you can have not only the data decentralised, but also the way the data is handled in a decentralised manner. Independent of the discussion of centralised versus decentralised, Chaim reminds us what is important is to focus on the business use case and then determine the best approach.   What is confidential computing Confidential computing allows different actors to perform private computations on specific data sets and process data without other actors being aware of each other and without them being able to see what data is being processed. The party that is hosting this black box whether it’s a regulator or a network operator they can’t see what is being processed within the black box. An example of such a black box is the Intel SGX chip which has enclaves where the data can be processed in a fully confidential way without revealing any data to external parties. Insurblocks recorded a podcast with Richard Brown, CTO at R3 entitled "Confidential computing - introduction to R3's Conclave". “Double Dipping” Fraud KPMG has estimated that detected and undetected fraud make up between 5% to 10% of insurers’ total claim payouts. “Double-dipping” fraud a key contributor to fraud, costs the insurance industry several billion dollars each year, which inevitably leads to higher household insurance costs Double dipping happens when one actor for one loss event goes to multiple insurers to request a same payout. For example, a customer whose had a car accident will go to insurers A, B and C to get a payout from each one of them. This is quite a large problem for insurers which today has been extremely hard to detect. Insurers are usually unaware of this problem as they do not have a way to detect if their customer are insured with another insurer and if a payout has been made on a claim or not. There has been attempts by insurers to share information via a centralised database but that came up with a number of complexities from a regulatory standpoint and from a GDPR one. In addition, centralised databases run the risk of getting hacked or of leaked sensitive information.   IntellectEU IntellectEU are the developers of the ClaimShare solution. The firm was founded over 15 years ago as an integration company in the payment sector. They have done over 400 integrations, mainly with SWIFT, in addition to other payment rails. Since 2014 they have been working with DLT and were the first to perform a SWIFT to Ripple integration. In the blockchain space, IntellectEU has been working first with Ripple, then with Ethereum and in 2016 they were one of the founding members of Hyperledger. Since 2017 they have been working closely with R3 Up to now they have been working with 40 capital market, insurance and telco projects for using blockchain and emerging technologies such as AI, confidential computing and quantum computing.   ClaimShare Chaim introduced ClaimShare is the first platform that allows the detection and prevention of double dipping fraud in the insurance industry. ClaimShare uses blockchain technology to allow the sharing of public information to match data and match claims based on colour, location and date, for example. They then use, confidential computing part to match sensitive data of the claims that can be the named user, their address and birthdate.

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are shaking up traditional finance and shifting the tectonic plates of investing, but the technology underlying digital assets — blockchain — may eventually have a bigger impact on the world. Today, most applications on public chains such as Ethereum are centered around the economic layers of cryptocurrencies, such as decentralized finance (DeFi). But for a country like China, where public chain applications may not always be aligned with local regulations, permissioned chains are presenting corporations an alternative as well as greater protection from the volatility of cryptocurrency prices. “If we ran an application on a public chain, the revenue must be in cryptocurrency. Then, the cost is in cryptocurrency, the revenue is in cryptocurrency — that makes no sense,” Yifan He, the CEO of Red Date Technology — the company behind state-backed Blockchain-based Service Network (BSN) in China — told Forkast.News in a video interview. “Next year, the cost could be more than your revenue.” BSN recently scored the licensing rights to R3’s Corda Enterprise and Corda-based Open Permissioned Chain to resell the enterprise blockchain for developers in China, which would allow Chinese banks and other companies to adopt Corda’s technology “Large corporates are coming to these networks to help improve their working capital, to help finance their business day-to-day,” Todd McDonald, R3’s co-founder and chief product officer, told Forkast.News. “The volatility of having to pay for transactions in a cryptocurrency is sort of the opposite of what they’re trying to achieve.” According to He, there are at least five banks in China that have approached Red Date to build apps using Corda, or CorDapps. Corda was once a storied technology from abroad that piqued the curiosity of research centers and development teams across the mainland. These curious developers never had access to Corda’s permissioned blockchain — until now. “Now, it is very easy to access our network based on Corda, for everybody.” He said. “We really want the high school students, the colleges, to just have a class teaching how to program Corda.” As Beijing leads ahead of the pack among major nations in developing a central bank digital currency, the nation has also been building out the infrastructures for the Web 3.0 era through ambitious initiatives like BSN. “The focus within Europe is more on, what is the potential for something like a digital euro as more of a bigger project across the European Union,” McDonald said. “I would love to say that in the U.S. there is an equal amount of common investment on the infrastructure side, but it’s really being led, obviously, by the private sector.” Watch He and McDonald’s full interview with Forkast.News to learn more about how China’s BSN is looking to leverage Corda’s open-source protocol to drive further interoperability on the network, what the future might hold for BSN and other state-backed networks, the limitations of focusing too closely on cryptocurrency as an application, and more.

Andrew Speers, Director of Product and Innovation at RBS, is passionate about user experience and developing customer centric propositions. In this podcast he discusses the important role blockchain can help as an enabler of other technologies to delivering great user experiences within the financial industry and beyond.   What is blockchain? Andrew recognises that there is no standardised definition to blockchain and his definition comes from as a business user instead of a technologist, engineer or coder. Blockchain is just a distributed ledger technology (DLT). That DLT sits on top of the internet. It is a network of nodes. A node has a unique identity and it stores data.   Applications are built on that network like apps in the app store. Nodes can participate in one or many apps, depending on the blockchain. Andrew reminds us of a few more truth regarding DLTs: Not every DLT needs a blockchain Not every DLT has a crypto asset or crypto currency attached to it Not every DLT   Disruption within a fragment financial industry Consumer Connectivity Insights 2018 reveals over 69 percent of global consumers would consider changing their bank, retailer or insurance provider due to a disconnected experience. For Andrew this has happened due capacity utilisation within financial services firms. The financial industry is fragmented and is being disrupted. It isn’t facing disruption it is being disrupted. The issue at hand is that the banking industry is focused on products along lines of technical expertise rather than building products along the user journey or the user experience. If an individual or a business has a multi-product need it fragments as it moves within the bank. The client first goes through an originations function, then into the credit assessment function, then into operations and/or bespoke product knowledge such FX trading finance, insurance risk and others. Complicated clients with complicated needs have to go through a number of different silos within a financial services firm which creates a hugely disconnected experience for them. DLT is coming to a maturity point now where it's helping financial firms to knit some of this together to create client centric user experiences by having a distributed architecture with identifiable data from corporates. These can be seamlessly stitched together and bespoke user propositions can be created. Clients can now have a little of FX attached to a little bit of credit assessment, attached to a little bit of trade finance with the exchange of data can be automatically transacted on the distributed ledger thanks to smart contracts, thus improving the user experience.   Challenger banks and DLT Andrew recognises that these type of challenger banks are doing some great work. For specific parts of their business they are seen as challengers. RBS looks to embed the existing or incumbent technologies they’re using to catch up a little bit or to stop them taking transaction and their clients off the periphery as they build scale. RBS is looking to DLT and how DLT allows banks to attach identity to client data and to their transactional data. It allows RBS to develop solutions with greater efficiencies as RBS does not need to constantly exchange information between the client and itself and their different departments internally, those fragmented silos that were mentioned earlier on. RBS doesn’t have to process, recheck and reprocess those same data points continuously. It also means that for DLT clients sitting on a shared protocol such as R3’s Corda Enterprise, who have 57 other banks on their network, then theoretically they are accessible by anybody else which creates further user experience benefits and efficiencies as well.   Examples of blockchain initiatives in the financial sector that generate better user experience Identity Billions of people and corporations have an identity.

This is your daily roundup for Sunday, September 22, 2019. Wells Fargo pilots a stablecoin for internal settlement, Upbit delists 6 privacy coins, and CipherTrace develops a tracker for tracking illicit tokens. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota Upbit Delists Privacy Coins South Korea’s Upbit exchange has announced the delisting of privacy coins monero (XMR), dash (DASH), zcash (ZEC), haven (XHV), bittube (TUBE), and PIVX (PIVX). The six privacy coins will no longer be supported after September 30th. Upbit said money laundering and the possibility of inflows of privacy coins to the exchange were the leading reasons for delisting, following the guidelines of the Financial Action Task Force. This follows OKEX dropping five privacy coins earlier this month. Wells Fargo Pilots Stablecoin Wells Fargo says its blockchain for internal cross-border money transfers is faster and more efficient than SWIFT. Wells Fargo Digital Cash uses R3’s Corda Enterprise software to handle internal book transfers, when funds move from a payer’s account to a payee’s account at the same bank. Unlike JPMorgan’s JPM Coin, Wells Fargo’s digital cash will be backed 1-for-1 with fiat. Wells Fargo will hold the fiat currency and will issue digital cash tokens. The tokens are placed into digital wallets and are able to be exchanged. Wells Fargo Digital Cash is strictly an internal settlement service and will go into a pilot phase next year. Using the digital cash would allow the bank to move funds 20 hours a day, rather than only six to nine hours when it relies on SWIFT. CipherTrace Develops Tracker For Illicit Tokens Blockchain forensics firm CipherTrace has developed a mobile tool for tracking bitcoin and ethereum tokens with an illicit history. CipherTrace Scout generates an instant report after inputting a wallet address. US federal agencies like the IRS and FBI already use similar tracking software by Chainalysis. Casey Bohn, a crime specialist and educator for the National White Collar Crime Center, trains agents to use CipherTrace and says law enforcement loves the transaction visualization that it provides. Seed CX Cut Trading Fees Cryptocurrency exchange Seed CX has cut trading fees from eight basis points to five basis points for takers, and  makers will receive a basis point rebate. The lower fees beat out top players like Bittrex and Gemini. Seed CX provides institutional investors with execution and settlement services, including crypto derivatives trading through subsidiaries. EA Trolls Crypto Twitter Video game company EA trolled crypto Twitter by sending out a tweet stating quote “invest in Crypto.” The tweet was intended as a marketing stunt aimed at introducing a new character in its game, Apex Legends Season 3: Meltdown, in which the new character is named “Crypto” – referring to traditional cryptography and not cryptocurrency.

This Week in Crypto - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency News

This is your weekly roundup for the week ending September 13, 2019. The Libra Association stays firm on launching, despite rejection in the EU, KyberSwap introduces a fiat on-ramp, and Binance US is preparing to launch next week. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota   Libra Adds Singapore Dollar To Basket Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it added the Singapore Dollar to it’s Libra basket of fiat currencies. According to bloomberg, Facebook wrote in response to concerns from Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner, telling U.S. senators that the initial basket of currencies that will back its Libra cryptocurrency will likely include the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen, the British pound and the Singapore dollar. Facebook also left open the possibility that the Libra Association might launch Libra outside the U.S. even if regulators inside the U.S. still have concerns. Libra Seeks Swiss License Then, FINMA confirmed that they received a request from the Libra Association for an assessment of its Libra project under Swiss supervisory law. FINMA released new stablecoin guidelines, noting an increase in stable coin’ projects since 2018.  FINMA will treat stable coins just like existing blockchain-based tokens, with a focus on the economic function and purpose of a token. FINMA stated “The requirements under supervisory law may differ depending on which assets (e.g. currencies, commodities, real estate or securities) the ‘stable coin’ is backed by and the legal rights of its holders.” The Libra Association is seeking a swiss payments license, as they asked FINMA for an assessment of how they would classify the planned Libra project and issuance of a ‘stable coin’ under Swiss supervisory law. According to Reuters, the Libra Association stated “We are engaging in constructive dialogue with FINMA and we see a feasible pathway for an open-source blockchain network to become a regulated, low-friction, high-security payment system.” France To Block Libra Project Then at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) conference on cryptocurrencies, finance minister Bruno Le Maire strongly opposed Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency stating “I want to be absolutely clear: In these conditions, we cannot authorise the development of Libra on European soil.” Le Maire reportedly expressed concerns that Libra may “substitute itself as a national currency” and potentially cause financial disruption. Libra Stays Firm On Launch Despite regulatory scrutiny, the Libra Association is staying firm on the launch of the Libra cryptocurrency. In an interview with French publication Les Echos, Libra managing director and COO Bertrand Perez addressed the concerns of regulators about Libra posing a threat to financial stability, stating that “It is their monetary policies that will influence the Libra through the basket and not the other way around.” He added that the reserve will be invested in the basket currencies and in very short-term government debt. He also said that the reserve would amount to no more than $200 billion. Perez readdressed that the U.S. dollar should have at least half the weight of the basket and that “If there is a catastrophe on a currency or a crisis between now and the Libra [launch], we could remove it from the basket, but this decision should be put to the vote and taken by a two-thirds majority of the members of the association.” Perez ended with saying that the Libra Association is firmly maintaining their launch schedule, between Q3 and Q4 2020. No Crypto-Crypto Tax in France According to Bloomberg, France will not tax crypto-to-crypto trades, but will tax gains when they are converted back into traditional fiat currency. French finance minister Bruno Le Maire stated “We believe that the moment the gains are converted into traditional money is the right time to assess tax,” Mastercard Pilots Cross Border Payments Blockchain Mastercard has partnered with enterprise blockchain software provider R3 to pilot a new blockchain-powered cross-border payments solution. The project aims at connecting faster payments schemes with banks backed by Mastercard’s clearing and settlement network. According to R3, the platform will be built on Corda Enterprise, the commercial version of R3’s open-source Corda Network.  KyberSwap Introduces Fiat On-Ramp Non-custodial exchange KyberSwap has announced a partnership with Coindirect to provide a fiat to crypto on-ramp. KyberSwap users can use credit and debit cards to purchase Ethereum, but will incur a 3.5% fee. KyberSwap says there will be no complex KYC for purchasing small amounts. The platform currently supports Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens.  Coinbase Fund Coinbase has launched a USDC Bootstrap Fund. The fund invests USDC directly into decentralised finance protocols. The USDC is tied up in a smart contract protocol and is available for borrow by any counterparty willing to provide crypto collateral and pay a floating interest rate. The first investment will be $1m USDC for Compound Finance and $1m USDC for dYdX protocol. EOS Hard Fork v1.8 The EOS network is expected to undergo a hard fork on September 23rd at 13:00 UTC. This is the first consensus upgrade that requires a hard fork on the EOS network. Block producer ColinCrypto says “EOSIO 1.8 enables many positive features, such as the Voice social platform and a reduction of inflation from 5% to 1%. As such, this is a very important update.” According to block producer EOS Nation, 29 of the 30 top block producers have committed to upgrading. Binance US To Launch Next Week Binance US is planning to open registration and deposits next week on September 18th. After registration, six cryptocurrencies will be available for deposits including bitcoin, ethereum, XRP, bitcoin cash, litecoin, and tether. The new U.S. exchange will not offer services in New York due to the ‘BitLicense’ regulatory requirement. As of August, Binance had not yet applied for the license. The launch of Binance US comes after the exchange banned U.S. customers in June following regulatory uncertainty. Binance Launches BUSD Stablecoin Binance is opening trading for its new stable coin BUSD starting September 16th. BUSD was created in partnership with the Paxos Trust Company, which already issues its own dollar-backed and gold-backed stablecoins. The new stablecoin has obtained regulatory approval from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). Binance has already issued stablecoins pegged to bitcoin (BTCB) and the British pound (BGBP). BUSD will be backed by U.S. dollars on a 1:1 ratio Cryptocurrency Adoption In Cuba A report from U.S. News suggests early signs of cryptocurrency adoption in Cuba, as one of the first Cuban crypto exchanges Fusyona is becoming active. The U.S. trade embargo cuts Cubans off from many of the financial services available in the West and Cubans cannot obtain credit or debit cards for international use. Some Cubans have turned to cryptocurrencies to make online purchases and investments. Jason Sanchez, a local Cuban who uses Bitcoin, to purchase parts from an online Chinese store told U.S. news “This is really opening new doors for us.” Fusyona currently has 1,300 users on the exchange. Interstellar Gets New CEO Interstellar, the company behind the stellar blockchain is getting a new CEO. Current CEO Adam Ludwin is stepping down to work on Pogo, an app-focused company targeting interoperability between mobile wallets. Pogo will be structured as a subsidiary to Interstellar. Zelle co-founder Mike Kennedy will be the new CEO starting September 15th. Zelle is the mobile payments network owned by several large U.S. banks including JPMorgan Chase, Citi and Bank of America. Kennedy, has been an advisor to the Stellar Development Foundation since 2017. Lubin Joins Hyperledger Board Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin is joining the governing board the Hyperledger project by the Linux Foundation. ConsenSys recently became a Hyperledger premier member, saying it will work on interoperability between blockchains and promote standards to support enterprise-grade blockchain environments.

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

On my daily tech podcast, I often talk about new solutions that leverage technology. But today, I wanted to explore the world of Blockchain Innovators in Trade Finance. TradeIX are building the world’s first open platform powered by blockchain and distributed ledger technology. The best way to describe TradeIX is as a ‘Network of Networks’ for global trade finance. It is the most connected and secured platform infrastructure for banks, asset managers, B2B networks and value-added service providers. TradeIX and R3 also launched Project Marco Polo as a joint undertaking together with over a dozen of the world’s foremost financial institutions active in Trade Finance including BNP Paribas, Commerzbank, ING, and Natwest. Usually, I would just invite TradeIX onto this podcast to talk about how they are transforming trade finance through technology. But I wanted to try something different. I wanted to get companies based all over the world onto one call and see if we can show how they are all collaborating with each other to reshape trade finance all by leveraging technology. Today's Guests Nicole Lefevre is an associate at R3 which is an enterprise blockchain software firm working with a broad ecosystem of more than 200 members and partners across multiple industries from both the private and public sectors to develop on Corda, its open-source blockchain platform, and Corda Enterprise, a commercial version of Corda for enterprise usage. R3’s global team of over 180 professionals in 13 countries is supported by over 2,000 technology, financial, and legal experts drawn from its global member base. Andrew Speers is the Director, Product, and Innovation at NatWest within the RBS group. Andrew has been working in the Financial Services industry for over 15 years. During this time he has held various positions with leading global banks in roles ranging from Sales to Product Development. As a member of RBS Group, within NatWest Trade & Working Capital Services team, Andrew also covers areas such as Blockchain / DLT, Emerging Technology, Digitisation, Fintech Partnership and identifying new and exciting opportunities to help the banks client base to grow and prosper. Alain Verschueren is the Head of DLT trade & treasury solutions at BNP Paribas which is a leading bank in Europe with an international reach. It has a presence in 74 countries, with more than 192,000 employees, including more than 146,000 in Europe. The Group has key positions in its three main activities: Domestic Markets and International Financial Services (whose retail-banking networks and financial services are covered by Retail Banking & Services) and Corporate & Institutional Banking, which serves two client franchises: corporate clients and institutional investors David Sutter is the Chief Strategy Officer at TradeIX and is an experienced Fintech entrepreneur and a blockchain/DLT expert. He was one of the first to foresee the benefits DLT could bring to financial services and in particular trade finance. Over the past years he helped pioneer and design the technology’s application for trade finance. He joined TradeIX in 2017 as Head of Platform Strategy to develop a roadmap for the trade and working capital finance platform and for the Marco Polo Network. David also devised an ambitious and ground-breaking vision for the Trade Finance Industry, for the Marco Polo Network and for TradeIX which fundamentally differentiates them from other players and networks in this field. As the Chief Strategy Officer, he will continue defining and designing the future of TradeIX and the Marco Polo Network. We discuss how Marco Polo is providing cutting-edge open account trade solutions, robust suite of trade specific APIs, sophisticated rules engine, and open, standard core infrastructure. A secure, single source of truth for critical trade data including identities, purchase orders, invoices, shipping and logistics information, trade assets, financing activity, and credit risk is no longer a pipe dream, it's a reality.

Welcome to the first episode of our new News Flash series, where we share the latest developments in the blockchain space, straight off the press. In today’s episode we have Ryan Rugg, Global Head of Insurance at R3 and a regular speaker at Insureblocks. R3, which featured in one of our previous episodes (R3 – The blockchain banking consortium) started in 2015 as a consortium of financial institutions that joined forces to test blockchain solutions. Three years later, their hard work has culminated in an exciting new project and we are proud to announce the release of Corda Enterprise to the insurance industry. Corda Enterprise is R3’s commercial offering that brings greater enterprise capabilities to the Corda platform. It builds upon Corda’s functionality, enhancing availability, security and performance.   Corda Corda, the blockchain created by R3, is the only blockchain that has been designed and built specifically for business. Corda’s focus on privacy, security and scalability distinguish it from other blockchains. Unlike Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, where all the information is shared between every node on the network, Corda shares information on a bilateral and multilateral level only with parties that need to see it. This choice has certainly paid off as there are currently over 200 financial institutions, regulators, insurers, trade associations, professional services firms and ISVs that are working on Corda. Many of these have featured on Insureblocks, such as B3i, which replaced the IBM Hyperledger Fabric with Corda, Insurwave and RiskBlock. Corda also appeals to industries beyond insurance. Fusion LenderComm, a syndicated lending platform and GuildOne’s Royalty Ledger, a blockchain solution for the oil and gas sector, both utilise Corda. This wide participation across industries is the reason Corda is an open source project. R3 wanted Corda to be a decentralised and open environment where every company can work with others or create and share their own innovative solutions. Continuing in this spirit, Corda and Corda Enterprise are fully interoperable. Anyone can remain on Corda without procuring the Enterprise licence. Anyone can upgrade to Corda Enterprise and still work with applications on the Corda blockchain.   Why Corda Enterprise? The whole idea of Corda is to enable businesses to transact directly and privately, reducing transaction costs and streamlining operations. However, many large users faced technical, regulatory and compliance issues that prevented them from using blockchain internally at scale. After listening to Corda members’ requests, R3 is launching Corda Enterprise and has implemented additional functionalities so that every business can benefit. These extra features enhance security and make Corda Enterprise easier to scale: Blockchain Application Firewall - enables Corda Enterprise to be deployed inside corporate data centres while retaining the ability to securely communicate with other nodes on the network. This is a unique feature that is not present in any other blockchain 24/7 support Predictable release schedules Governance, performance and availability monitoring Enhanced security Disaster recovery Support for Oracle and SQL databases Corda network The Corda Network People often talk about ledger interoperability but forget about interoperability within ledgers themselves. Within differently designed networks, such as Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, users cannot seamlessly operate from one application to another, leading to trapped assets in different channels. In reality businesses want to operate with more than one application at a time. With Corda Network, members have a unique ID. This means they have a single identity on the platform and can seamlessly operate within all applications, whether on Corda Enterprise or Corda open source.   Starting out: Corda or Corda Enterprise?
