This episode is an ode to listening to your body. Listening to the cues we are instinctively given, and exploring this relationship through food, through emotion, and through rest. Chiara shares common traits of disordered eating, some of which are so familiar and prevalent, that they have been adopted by society as norms. In this episode, we revisit the topic of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) with our special guest, Accredited Exercise Physiologist and health coach, Sarah King. If you missed our previous episode with Sarah on HA, we've linked it in the show notes for you.You can find Sarah on Instagram at @sarahlizking or visit her website for more info on her work in this space.Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) is responsible for around 30% of cases of secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. In this episode, we delve into the topic of HA, clarifying what it is and dispelling common myths, like the misconception that it only affects individuals in smaller bodies or with eating disorders. At The Dietologist, we often see people with HA struggle to seek support because the solutions seem simple in theory: eat more, move less, and manage stress. However, we explore the complexities and barriers people face when trying to implement these changes, which can be rooted in body image issues, diet culture, eating disorders, habits, and fear of weight gain.Sarah shares practical strategies that have worked well for her clients in each aspect of HA management: nutrition, exercise, and stress. To book a session with The Dietologist team for a personalised approach to managing HA and supporting your fertility, head here.Want to keep listening? TRIGGER WARNING: Eating disorders are discussed in this episode Calories are universally recognised as a means to measure the amount of energy in foods that are present on the pack of every food we buy. This has been used as a way to monitor the amount of energy we take in through our food and implemented in certain weight loss programmes. In more recent years it has gained a lot more popularity through certain apps. However whilst calories can give some indication of the units of energy in food they do not give any data on the nutritional value and quality of food which is why this method has come under more scrutiny. So much so that the phrase “calories in, calories out” for weight loss is really not that straight forward at all and has been refuted by many. We want to see if calorie counting has any validity or use in helping us to support our health and wellbeing or is it just a total waste of time? The rules:Rose has to count calories for a week using an app which will have been calculated according to her age/height/weight and meet the target amount over the course of the week. She has to upload everything she eats and drinks for the duration of the week and note how she is feeling throughout the week both physically and mentally.Does she find this useful or just a way to feed into a dysfunctional relationship with our food?Listen in to find out! This season is kindly sponsored by Ancient and Brave.
