Dr. Peter Lidsky posits that aging is not merely a process of accumulating damages, as commonly believed, but rather a programmed adaptation akin to a part of the immune system. Executive branch constraints and the posture of the media have shifted in significant ways over the past two decades. Lyrissa Lidsky and Christina Koningisor, law professors at the University of Florida and the University of California San Francisco, respectively, argue in a forthcoming law review article that these changes—including the erosion of certain post-Watergate reforms and the decline of local news—have created a First Amendment disequilibrium. They contend that the twin assumptions of the press's power to extract information and check government authority on the one hand, and the limitations on executive branch power on the other, that undergird First Amendment jurisprudence no longer hold, leaving the press at a significant First Amendment disadvantage. Lawfare Research Fellow Matt Gluck spoke with Lidsky and Koningisor about the current state of First Amendment jurisprudence, the ways in which the press used to be stronger, executive branch power on the federal and state levels, how the authors think our current First Amendment architecture should change, and more.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. The government often weaves false sentencing narratives about our clients:  they are born bad, uncontrollably violent, no concern for others, no respect for the law.  There's always a more truthful, powerful, and humanistic story to tell.  And in some of those cases that story could be LEAD POISONING! The fact is, the probability of those who have been poisoned with lead and other toxins as children are much more likely to run afoul of the law because of frontal lobe damage affecting judgement, impulsivity, executive functioning, and a host of other impairments.  Moreover, there's a significant correlation between lead poisoning and violent crime.  External factors such as stress and trauma exacerbate the effects of lead poisoning. I'm sure I've  missed this issue more than a handful of times in the 1000+ cases I've handled, because I didn't know what I didn't know on this subject.   I don't want that to happen to you. Therefore, in order to put this issue on all of our radars, helping us get set for sentencing is a world-class expert on lead poisoning, neuropsychologist Dr. Ted Lidsky.   IN THIS EPISODE:   What are common ways a child can be exposed to lead; How do you quantify or prove lead exposure if it happened so long ago; Half-life of lead in the brain and bones; Some telltale signs of lead poisoning; Lead causing problems with impulse control; Socio-economic disparities of lead poisoning and help to ameliorate the fallout; Why a child can appear normal yet still have significant brain damage; The importance of “effect modification” in developing the whole lead poisoning narrative.   If you think you need an expert to deal with a led poisoning issue in your case, reach out to Dr. Lidsky at:  tlidsky@gmail.com

Annie interviews Katya Lidsky, a writer, podcaster and frequent dog fosterer who lives in Austin, TX. She recently started a podcast called The Animal That Changed You, and interviewed Annie about an animal that changed her (head over and check out the episode! https://www.katyalidsky.com/podcast). Katya, who refers to herself as a "soft core" animal activist, tells Annie about loving and losing a dog who helped her heal from her longtime struggle with an eating disorder. In her dog Ophelia's final days, Katya wrote her love letters daily. Annie lends her some advice on introducing a foster dog to her current dog, and the two discuss their thoughts on how vegetarianism relates to being a dog lover -- Katya doesn't eat meat, but Annie does and... has complicated feelings about that fact. That point in their conversation moved Annie to share a section from the 2010 book by Jonathan Safran Foer Eating Animals: The Case For Eating Dogs. Loving our pets is absolutely fundamental to making your pet partnership work. And yes, it is work a lot of the time. Bringing a new animal home to your existing pets can be a tough thing to get right. It can take a lot of time, energy, and effort, so loving them is a big part of staying sane and keeping everyone happy. But sometimes, love isn't enough. There's bound to be a little tension, but with a lot of work, training, patience, and management strategies, that should all pay off. But sometimes, it just doesn't. You might have tried every tactic under the sun to help everyone get along, and it still might not work.   In a coaching call, I spoke with Katya Lidsky, animal lover, writer, and host of The Animal That Changed You podcast. The Nuclear Fusion Energy Delusion? feat. Gerrit Bruhaug

Fusion is supposed to be even more powerful than fission but without the baggage. It resonates with the appeal to nature fallacy with notions of bringing the power of the sun down to earth. 39 years ago Dr. L. Lidsky wrote that "The scientific goal of fusion energy turns out to be an engineer's nightmare." Building a reliable, affordable power plant that requires achieving temperatures hotter than the sun and as cold as physically possible within several meters of each other all under the materially challenging conditions of high energy neutron bombardment is only the beginning. Low power densities and parasitic load further chip away at the potential performance of "the ultimate solution" to our clean energy challenges. Gerrit Bruehogg is a nuclear engineer with a background in fission reactors and particle accelerators who is currently doing his thesis at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics on inertial confinement fusion. Join us for a lively discussion that leaves no subatomic particle unturned.

Join host Elise Marquam Jahns and Isaac Lidsky for an amazing hour of inspiration. Isaac Lidsky may very well possess the most eclectic resume in business. He has been a child television star, a Supreme Court clerk (for Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and the founder of several businesses. He graduated from Harvard at age 19 and Harvard Law School in 2004. Perhaps most striking, Lidsky is only 40, and he is blind. Born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina, from age 12 to 25, he slowly lost his sight. Neither his youth nor his blindness has limited him. Lidsky's recently published book, "Eyes Wide Open," explains the powerful insight that inspired him to achieve his most ambitious dreams despite losing sight to a blinding disease. Today he is dedicated to helping others live and lead well-empowered, mindful, and accountable lives. Listen to his TED Talk (which gained over 1 million views within the first 20 days of release.) Isaac Lidsky “may possess the most eclectic resume in entrepreneurship” according to Inc. Magazine. He played series regular “Weasel” on Saved by the Bell: The New Class; graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen with a degree in mathematics and computer science; graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude; served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg; argued more than a dozen appeals in federal court on behalf of the United States and never lost a case; started a tech company that sold for $230 million; transformed a struggling $15 million concrete subcontractor into an industry-leading $150 million construction services company in five years; and founded Hope for Vision, a nonprofit organization that funds the development of treatments and cures for blinding diseases. Lidsky was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina that caused him to gradually lose his sight. Lidsky lives in Windermere, Florida with his wife, Dorothy; their triplets, Lily Louise, Phineas, and Thaddeus; and baby Clementine. Favorite Success Quote “Try not to become a man of success, rather become a man of value” ~Albert Einstein Key Points 1. Make Your Own Definition of Success Each and every day, we are bombarded by images, videos, and social diatribes about what it means to be a success. Fancy cars overtake us in traffic, well-dressed men dating beautiful models captivate our attention, and the “Houses in the Hills” earn both our scorn and envy. And most of us allow this societal autopilot to determine our goals, dreams, and ambitions. We all want to make millions, sleep with beautiful women, and have a luxurious lifestyle, but we never stop to ask ourselves why. We define our success by the world’s standards instead of our own, and as a result, most of us are angry, confused, and frustrated. But there is another way. You have the power to create your own definition of success. To decide for yourself what is important and what is not. To create your own goals based on your deepest values and desires. Forget what society says. Success is subjective. If you wake up each morning, happy, fulfilled, and full of life, then you are a success. The only question that remains for you to answer is “What is my definition of success”? 2. Your Reality is Determined by Your Choices  If you are drawing breath and reading this paragraph right now, then chances are, you have been through the ringer. And if you haven’t, then you might want to put on your raincoat, because there are a couple of storms on the horizon that are headed in your direction. Struggle is an axiom of the human experience. Everyone has challenges, problems, and setbacks. So why is it that two people who are faced with exactly the same circumstance can create massively different results? One simple word. Choice. In each moment, you have the power to choose how your circumstances will affect you. You can choose to believe that life is happening for you, that everything happens for a reason, and that you will achieve your goals and dreams. Or you can choose to believe that life is happening to you, that people are all inherently evil and trying to hurt you, and that you are doomed to a life of failure. The choice is yours. But as the Knight in Indiana Jones said “Choose wisely.” 3. There is No Tomorrow  Yesterday no longer exists. It is nothing more than a series of mental projections that often occurred in a completely different manner than you remember. Tomorrow has not yet arrived and never will. All that we have is right now. This present moment. Take a minute to appreciate it. Enjoy the next breath you take, feel the chair underneath you, listen to the sounds around you. Each moment that we have is a gift, you must learn to appreciate it and be grateful for it instead of waiting for a tomorrow or “Someday” that may never come. 4. Reframe Fears as Fiction In AA, they define fear as “False evidence appearing real”. And truthfully, that is all that it is. Most of the things that we worry about, lose sleep over, and allow to paralyze us will never come to fruition. The worst case scenarios almost never happen, and when they do, they are rarely as awful as we initially imagined. Fear is nothing but fiction. Every fear that is holding you back and preventing you from achieving your greatness is little more than fiction. It is a projection that your 10,000+ year old brain is creating to try and keep you safe from an imaginary fate. Realize this. Embrace this. And step into your fear and take massive action. 5. Get Congruent with Your Values  We live in a world that utterly and completely lacks integrity. I don’t mean this in the sense that we all run around lying and breaking our promises, but rather in the sense that what we think, say, and do rarely align. Most people think that they want to be rich, they say that they want to be well-off, and then they act like they want to be poor. People say think that they want to be shredded and healthy, they say that they want to be in “Decent shape”, and then they act like their body is a playground to use and abuse. People are rarely congruent and almost never in integrity with their values. You need to realize that you cannot have your cake and eat it too. You cannot say that you value health and well being and then abuse your body, skip the gym, and deprive yourself of sleep. You cannot say that you value wealth and then spend every penny you make and waste hours on end in front of the television. If you want to be successful, whatever your definition of success is, then the first step is to get in integrity with your values. What do you want? Say it. And once you say it, go and do it. It’s that simple.

As Inc. Magazine reported, “Isaac Lidsky may possess the most eclectic resume in business. Over the years, he has been a child television star (he played series regular “Weasel” on NBC’s “Saved By The Bell: The New Class”), a Supreme Court clerk (for Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and the co-founder of an internet startup.” The full list of his accomplishments is far longer: Lidsky graduated from Harvard at 19 with an honors degree in mathematics and computer science. He then founded [x+1] with MediaMath’s Joe Zawadzki, which was later acquired for $230 million. Fascinated by the burgeoning field of “cyberlaw,” Lidsky left [x+1] and returned to Harvard to attend law school and graduated magna cum laude in 2004. As a U.S. Justice Department lawyer, Lidsky argued more than a dozen appeals in federal court on behalf of the United States and never lost a case. Along the way, he founded Hope For Vision, a nonprofit organization to fund the development of treatments for blinding diseases and within 5 years grew it to a dozen cities nationwide and more than $5 million. In 2011 Lidsky returned to his entrepreneurial roots. He purchased a small, struggling residential construction subcontractor and led the development of a proprietary suite of logistics and ERM software to transform it. His reinvented construction services company grew more than tenfold in its first five years, and today it boasts annual revenues in excess of $250 million. In 2016 Lidsky set out to share with others his empowering approach to living and leading, and he was promptly recognized as a visionary thought leader. His first book, Eyes Wide Open, hit the shelves as a New York Times best seller in March 2017. TED invited Lidsky to present a mainstage TED Talk at TEDSUMMIT 2016 in Banff, Canada, and it was viewed more than a million times in its first 20 days. Lidsky now consults and speaks to organizations around the world on issues including leadership, accountability and self-empowerment. In 2018 Lidsky returned to his adtech roots, founding Underscore CLT and taking the helm as its President. Lidsky is determined to lead the development of a new technology infrastructure for digital marketing, using blockchain and related technologies to mitigate the industry’s longstanding structural challenges and to deliver on its untapped promise. Perhaps most striking, Lidsky is only 39, and he is blind. Born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina, from age 12 to 25 he slowly lost his sight. As Inc. reported, “ISAAC  LIDSKY may possess the most eclectic resume in business.” Series regular “Weasel” on Saved by the Bell: The New Class, he graduated from Harvard College at 19 (cum laude) and from Harvard Law School (magna  cum laude); served as a Supreme Court law Clerk (to two Justices); was a Justice Department litigator (undefeated); and worked for an elite international law firm. He had a legal resume that most lawyers could only dream of. But after having his triplets, who required over 70 days in the NICU, Isaac re-evaluated what he wanted out of his life. He left the law to buy a failing construction subcontractor in order to try his hand out at entrepreneurship.   Though originally the jump seemed to be a failure, Isaac turned the company into a highly profitable construction services company (ten times larger) that now boasts annual revenue over $250 million.  I got to talk to Isaac about how he was able to walk away from law, after building such a prestigious career, to follow a path more true to himself.   Isaac credits his experience going blind in his early twenties from a rare genetic disease as being the reason he is able to create his own reality and live Eyes Wide Open. He gave a main stage TED Talk on the subject of living Eyes Wide Open that was viewed more than a million times in its first three weeks. He also has a book by the same name, “Eyes Wide Open”, that is a New York Times, USA Today and Indie bestseller, and was named one of the Washington Post’s top 10 leadership books to read in 2017.   I got to find out what it means to live Eyes Wide Open and how we can all strive to live that way. I’m endlessly inspired by Isaac and hope to live my own life with Eyes Wide Open.   Here is what we chat about in this episode: Why he walked away from the glamour of Hollywood after finding success on Saved By the Bell: The New Class. How going blind taught him about the subjectivity of sight and how we create our own reality How fear replaces the unknown with the awful and how it keeps us stuck Why Isaac left the law, after an incredibly prestigious career, to run a construction company How he determined what was important in his life and how that changed his decision-making process How we can all live our lives Eyes Wide Open   Resources mentioned in this episode: Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl Where to find Isaac: Website: www.lidsky.com Twitter/Instagram/Facebook: @isaaclidsky Follow along for more: www.lessonsfromaquitter.com https://www.facebook.com/lessonsfromaquitter https://www.instagram.com/lessonsfromaquitter/ https://twitter.com/quitterpodcast

Comprised of 30 sessions total--each requiring only about an hour of time each week--the program interactively engages users in numerous entertaining games designed to enhance and maintain focus.  They're focused on reaching three main markets: those who struggle with ADHD, those who want to improve their performance in sports by more easily attaining a state of being “in the zone,” and then those who fall into the elder category and wish to strengthen or maintain mental capacity. Excellent Brain is currently being offered at no cost to schools in Israel, and those who have used it report higher grades in school, improved performance in sports, and longer-lasting attention spans, all of which can revolution a person's life.   Press play to learn more about this exciting new program, and visit www.excellent-brain.com for additional information or to purchase the program itself.

In this episode, Tim has a great conversation with an extraordinary man, husband, father, leader, businessman and author. Lidsky shares what he’s learned from going blind at a young age and how it is one of the best things that’s ever happened to him. OUR CONVERSATION: We are disabled with self-limiting assumptions we tell ourselves We all misperceive success and values We all have our blindness in our human condition We are creating the reality we are experiencing How we convince ourselves that the things we are thinking and doing are objective truths The world is full of examples of people who’ve overcome unspeakable circumstances and found meaning and joy in life Not taking control of writing your own narrative is a choice Positive habits Isaac has built into his life Having a real vigilance to separate out the difference between what you know, you think you know and what you need to figure out How we try to identify and cling to heroes and villains in the face of fear How fear shows up and fills in the blanks in your life with the most awful scenarios possible What fear did in his life when Isaac started losing his sight The importance of practicing your disciplines daily Every instance in our life can yield knowledge, wisdom, and strength The importance of quieting the noise and getting back to our strength Living your life with an open heart and open mind An open heart begins with being open and accessible to yourself first Own your emotions and the responsibility for your emotions The importance of introspection The power and ruthlessness of words Writing and how it is an invaluable tool How we speak to others like attorneys and listen like five-year-olds (THIS NEEDS TO BE FLIPPED) Confronting life’s challenges with initiative, humor, grace and an empowering new vision How effort without purpose is entropy How we have ultimate agency over every thought and action Isaac’s Uphill challenge that he had to overcome Three things Isaac is optimistic about over the next 12 months RESOURCES: Book: Eyes Wide Open by Isaac Lidsky Website: Lidsky.com Instagram: isaaclidsky Facebook: @IsaacLidsky LinkedIn: Isaac Lidsky Twitter: @isaaclidsky TedTalk: What reality are you creating for yourself? Isaac Lidsky is an entrepreneur, bestselling author, and coveted speaker. But that brief description doesn’t do justice to his remarkable resume. Lidsky was a child television star, appearing as series regular “Weasel” on NBC’s “Saved By The Bell: The New Class.” Lidsky left his acting career and went on to graduate from Harvard at 19 with an honors degree in mathematics and computer science. He returned to Harvard to study law and became the only blind person to clerk on the U.S. Supreme Court (for Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg). He later took charge of a struggling construction company and grew it tenfold. Lidsky was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina. From age 12 to 25, he slowly lost his sight. Using insights from his experiences, he authored the New York Times bestseller, Eyes Wide Open: Overcoming Obstacles and Recognizing Opportunities in a World That Can’t See Clearly. He founded a nonprofit organization to fund the development of treatments for blinding diseases and within five years grew it to a dozen cities nationwide. - Get your FREE copy of my e-book. On Wednesday March 15, 2017, host Janeane Bernstein will chat with former Saved by the Bell star-turned-entrepreneur, Isaac Lidsky, who shares his journey of becoming blind…and then learning to see with “Eyes Wide Open.” In his popular new TED Talk "What reality are you creating for yourself?," former Saved by the Bell teen star-turned-entrepreneur Isaac Lidsky recalls how the sales person he waved to in the store was really a mannequin, and how he reached down to wash his hands and realized it was a urinal and not a sink. He learned of his diagnosis at thirteen: Retinitis Piegmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that would lead to his blindness by age 25. After initially believing his blindness signaled the end of his independence and achievement, Lidsky found other pathways of perception, turning his life around with his Eyes Wide Open philosophy. He graduated from Harvard Law School, worked as a law clerk under the guidance of Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and eventually became a highly successful entrepreneur and family man. In his new book EYES WIDE OPEN: Overcoming Obstacles and Recognizing Opportunities in a World That Cant’s See Clearly, Isaac Lidsky probes the many facets of perception, detailing the neuroscience of sight and drawing on his own experience to show how our perception shapes—and often limits—our reality. Isaac Lidsky will share how his journey taught him to: · face fears in moments of crisis or extreme change and shape his own reality; · focus his viewpoint when it came to so-called “weaknesses;” · tackle the perception of luck; · listen with “eyes wide open” to better understand what others are communicating. Isaac Lidsky shares how to live with freedom from self-limitations and to lead life with deeper awareness, understanding, accountability, and success. About the Author: Isaac Lidsky has an eclectic resume. He played “Weasel” on Saved by the Bell: The New Class; graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen with a degree in mathematics and computer science; graduated from Harvard Law School and served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg; transformed a struggling $15 million concrete subcontractor into an industry-leading $150 million business; and founded Hope for Vision, a nonprofit that funds the development of treatments for blinding diseases.
