Elle Russ chats with Tyler Cartwright - 15 years ago, Tyler was nearly dead. He weighed a quarter of a ton, he was falling asleep while driving, while talking, and while working. He was eating 12,000 Calories per day chasing blood glucose spikes and crashes just to stay awake. His A1c was in excess of 13, and he was nearer to death each day. A series of events over time and his own desire to improve brought him face-to-face with the gravity of this situation and he began to fight for his well-being for the first time in nearly two decades. He shed 300 pounds of excess body weight and has maintained the loss for over three years. His A1c, BG, and all markers of metabolic health have returned. Tyler now coaches and teaches others how to do so, both through his cofounding of Ketogains with Luis Villaseñor, and through his recently published book, Kintsukuroi: Rebuilding Hope & Embracing Change. His work and his coaching have helped thousands of people to succeed and inspired countless others to pursue their goals. He is an international public speaker, loves a great conversation, and enjoys reading on various topics (with a library well over 2500 books). His wife, Jamie, and their daughter live at home outside of Nashville, TN with their dog Dixie. VIDEO EPSIODE HERE

If you look in a textbook of medical physiology, hydration is water and electrolytes in specific ratios. If you just add water you end up in a hyponatremic state; a low sodium state and this explains things like hand swelling. Most people are familiar with experiencing their hands swelling up when they go hiking and they drink lots of water, they're sweating like crazy, and they're swelling up because virtually nobody supplements with sodium... ...When our sodium levels are low, we will tend to get edema and this is when our hands, feet, and brain will also swell. This is what kills people when they over hydrate with only water like in hazing events or while training for and running in marathons. The next time you go hiking, drink pickle juice or LMNT, and notice how you don't swell." - Robb Wolf Why Sodium Is So Important When You Sweat "When we sweat, we mainly excrete sodium. We don't really excrete potassium or magnesium; there's a little bit but it's orders of magnitude different. So, in that high sweat scenario: a sauna, exercise, ruck marching; stuff like that - you need to mainly focus on sodium. Over the course of a month yes we need sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphates, bicarbonates - all of the electrolytes but in that time course of a hard, physical event or sauna, the main problem is the rapid and significant loss of sodium. So, that is another reason why you really have to target that." - Robb Wolf Achieving Stable Sodium Levels Pre, Peri, and Post Workout "Adequate post training or post stress sodium dramatically enhances recovery and there are a ton of mechanisms for why but one of the things that adequate sodium levels effect is cortisol release because it's less of a stress. If the body is getting adequate sodium, it's signalling the body that it's okay and it has enough nutrient resources to be able to recover. So pre workout sodium intake is really important depending on the duration of the event and then on the recovery side we also need adequate sodium and electrolytes.... ...During the workout, sipping a drink like LMNT that will keep you well hydrated. When I was trying to do training like this ten plus years ago I would just be absolutely crushed after a workout and I think it was because I wasn't properly addressing my electrolyte levels like I am today. This pre, peri, and then post supplementation is really important to be on point if you want to optimize the whole workout experience." - Robb Wolf Links From Today's Show Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Click here to get your FREE e-book, The Fundamental Guide To Fasting by Robb Wolf 357 Robb Wolf 103 Robb Wolf The Case For Better Meat | Robb Wolf What Is Wellness? Tyler Cartwright is the co-founder of Drink LMNT, Keto Gains, and At Go Health. Since coming to grips with his own ill health and beginning to lose 300 excess pounds, he’s been on a mission to teach others to take control of their own lives & health. • After years of shouting and teaching about the need for electrolytes in low carb and ketogenic diets, he finally stopped waiting for someone else to make a product that would help people. He and Luis partnered with Robb Wolf and his wife, Nicki Violetti, to bring LMNT Recharge to the market to help people who were certain that they could not perform, could not endure, and did not do well on low carb diets to realize that it wasn't the diet, it was the salt! • In today’s episode, Tyler discusses the science and importance of electrolytes and hydration and busts the myths that go along with these highly misunderstood topics. If you’re looking for the truth about electrolytes (especially salt!), hydration, how to do it all correctly, and why you should care about electrolytes, you’ll definitely want to tune in! Oh, and there’s a really funny story that Tyler tells us at the end :) • Tyler lives outside of Nashville, TN with his wife, Jamiee, and their daughter. You never asked for it, but he's been brought back. Tyler Cartwright rejoins the show to talk about the movie his father stars in, Roadside Prophets. Roadside Prophets is the worst movie we have watched so far. It is an incomprehensible mess that wields the worst qualities of the 90s. Somehow both timeless and aged to perfection, the navel gazing gen x narrative goes exactly nowhere, and feels justified in doing so. Yes, we did deceive Tyler in the beginning of the show.
Well, you asked for it. The old crew is back together. Dylan isn't happy about it, but here it is. Forced to watch The Journey Of Natty Gann (1985), Tyler Cartwright and Adam Hales join us as we reveal the underpinnings of a movie with literally no value whatsoever. Yes, there's a lumber angle. Yes, there's a labor angle. Don't let Lucas tell you otherwise. You'll be so delighted listening to this.

Tyler and I go over all things Keto as far as macros, nutrients, controversial topics, and using your knowledge to help people. We answer questions like whether or not calories truly matter, as well as how important ketone levels are. We end the show by talking about how there is far too much hate circulating in the community, and how we all need to focus on our common goal: to help people. Have a listen and enjoy!
Elle Russ chats with KETOGAINS co-founders Luis Villesenor and Tyler Cartwright. Luis has always been passionate about fitness due to a personal interest in improving his own physique. Always curious in learning the “whys and how’s” of how it all works, he has been studying and researching nutrition and strength training since he was 17.Upon discovering ketogenic diets in 2001, Luis has been on a low carb regime ever since, which he has used to favorably recomposition his body and improve his health. Luis decided to develop KETOGAINS to share his experiences and knowledge and help people attain their health and fitness goals. Luis is regarded as one of the most experienced and knowledgeable persons on Low-Carb / Ketogenic dieting, and is the “go to guy” when applying a Low-Carb diet for Bodybuilding and Strength Training by well-known and respected insiders, leaders, influencers of the low carb/paleo and general fitness community. Tyler Cartwright has a fascination with learning, reading, and self-improvement. A decade ago, with his weight at a hulking 505 lbs, his doctor told him, "All-in-all you're as healthy as a horse, but you're also as big as one. I'm not going to test your blood for what I know we will find, because I think you can fix this with diet and exercise." After pressing the issue, he tested his blood at a private lab and found his HbA1c to be over 13 (Type 2 Diabetes). Upon hearing that, he embarked on a journey to leverage that knowledge along with some passing experience and knowledge of a ketogenic diet to improve what was sure to be a food-shortened life. Along the way, in addition to resolving Type 2 diabetes, he shed 295 lbs without the aid of surgery or medication. His wife has lost over 125 lbs. Ketogains can assist you with your fitness and health goals through the knowledge, experience, and passion of their multidisciplinary team of professionals with varied and complimentary experiences, qualifications, and skills that have helped define and refine their protocols: Nutritionists, Fitness Trainers, Health Coaches, MDs, Dentists, Plastic Surgeons and Scientists and Researchers are part of our Coaching and Advisory Team. Tyler Cartwright, founding member of Ketogains, LLC (ketogains.com), shares his incredible journey back to good health and fitness, and the many ways that his keto-focused company can help people reach their fitness and health goals more efficiently. Cartwright is walking proof of the benefits that are available through the Ketogains' methods for he began his path back to good health at 505 pounds. Together with the support of his wife who had reached 300 pounds herself, they have found success over the past decade, both having reduced their weight significantly through diet and exercise. Cartwright has successfully stayed within 10 pounds of his current weight of 205 pounds and his wife, now down to only 160 pounds, has maintained her new weight for several years thus far. Cartwright discusses the origins of the ketogenic diet. He and his Ketogains' partners observed that while keto was not a new concept, as weightlifters and bodybuilders have long been using it to cut weight and meet goals, it was not, however, is properly introduced as a means to better health and fitness for the non-athlete. He delves into the various diets, from paleo to keto, vegan to vegetarian, and discusses their individual merits, frameworks, and strategies to success. Additionally, he discusses micronutrients, the advantages of taking in a sufficient amount of protein, and the benefits of chewing and digestion. And he explains how many have misinterpreted the ketogenic diet, making the assumption that keto means ‘eat as much as you want' when it simply does not, for as he states, caloric intake still matters. As the Ketogains team acknowledges, ketosis is a healthy side effect of their general macro and micro recommendations, but it is not the goal. Ketogains is a unified community-driven exploration of the path to physical excellence through ketosis. The team at Ketogains states that a ketogenic diet can assist most anyone to achieve personal goals of better health; increased endurance, strength, or speed; an increase of muscle mass; or the goal of simply sculpting a leaner body. It is an evidence-based path towards one's ideal body recomposition. Simply explained, a ketogenic diet is one that causes ketone bodies to be produced by the liver, that then shifts the body's metabolism away from glucose and on towards fat utilization. He stresses the importance of energy balance and calories, in coordination with a successful ketogenic diet. He discusses the challenges of rapid weight loss that sometimes perplex people after they feel like they have plateaued, but have often become, perhaps unknowingly, more sedentary. Cartwright explains the methods he and his team use to help those who find themselves gaining weight again, in spite of their efforts to do the right thing in regard to diet and exercise. He states that at this point they begin to look very carefully at exactly what someone is eating, down to the details such as how much is being consumed, their micronutrients, clinical diagnosis, as well as genetic or metabolic factors. Additionally, he discusses various products and supplements, insulin levels, and exogenous ketones. He also discusses ketone esters and their new popularity in the market. He cautions however that exogenous ketones are not a successful way to lose weight, but that successful weight loss is more often through hormonal balancing and caloric intake. Cartwright's career focus, which he is passionate about, is in working with clients who seek to change their lifestyle, behavior, and the nagging mental impasses that stand in the way of their success. Cartwright has experience working in bootcamp environments and individually with those just starting their journey, as well as others who have had some success and want to go further, and also those who feel they need to change what they are doing altogether, to find a new approach. He is keenly interested in biochemistry and bioenergetic factors, as well as the psychology of change and non-surgical fat loss through various methods including the ketogenic diet. Cartwright is recognized as a Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN), a Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT), and a Specialist in Bodybuilding (SB) by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA).

Marty Kendall is an engineer, a speaker, and a writer. He’s analyzed a bunch of data and built some cool, free technology. He’s also brought a lot of people together who are working on cutting edge, practical information. He runs a group where some of the smartest people in nutrition are interacting daily, sharing information and studies and clinical experience. This includes Dr. Ted Naiman who was my first guest and who we bring up a few times in this episode. These are not anti-carb people, they aren’t dogmatic, they don’t let other interests or beliefs enter the picture. They're after information and truth and are working towards healing people and changing lives. They’re coming at this from all sides and from all over the world. Some are doing the research, some are just interpreting it and thinking about it from new angles. Ted is in the clinic daily, putting it into practice and reversing diabetes. Marty is building tools and thinking about it from his engineering perspective. I love people who think about it this way - I’m like a broken record, because I’m an engineer too. We need to stop thinking that only a doctor can be an expert on nutrition. Why would they be? They have extremely little or no nutrition specific training. They are brilliant when it comes to a million other things, but they aren't the end-all be-all of nutrition They can be though. But so can an engineer who dedicates years of their life to researching a topic. Not everyone who does this will be smart or correct, but some are. These are the people I get on the podcast. Ivor Cummins, Tucker Goodrich, Gabor Erdosi, Dave Feldman soon, and now Marty Kendall. There’s many more as well, and I’ll continue to find them. Enough of my ranting - just a quick word on the Food Lies documentary. It’s going really well and being pushed forward daily. I just booked our trip to Maryland to film with Dr. Bill Schindler. Matt Lalonde’s presentation at AHS 2012 https://youtu.be/HwbY12qZcF4 Cronometer is a great app to track food and nutrients https://cronometer.com Nutrient dense foods are less insulinogenic, more satiating, and less energy dense Try to quantify things because nutrition is confusing enough I disagree with Joel Fuhrman’s nutrient density scoring system His version of nutrient density is variable and is based on what you personally aren’t getting enough of If you’re getting enough micronutrients, you’re very likely to be getting all the protein you need Can’t make a perfect diet because too many factors - season, cost, preference, etc. Some of the most nutrient dense and satiating foods are leafy greens, fish eggs, seafood, liver We’ve always sought after nutritious foods throughout history, with or without knowing it He mentions my recent episode with Tucker Goodrich https://www.peak-human.com/home/tucker-goodrich-on-vegetable-oils-being-at-the-heart-of-modern-disease on seed oils and how unnatural and energy dense they are Modern foods are engineered to trick us - they tastes delicious, but have no nutrition The book The Dorito Effect chronicles this https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22609354-the-dorito-effect?from_search=true It’s a cliche for a reason - eat real foods Trying to formulate a low insulin diet for his wife with type 1 diabetes that is also nutrient dense What are the most nutrient dense foods? Amazing benefits of seafood Modern food is dog food - stuffed with cheap grains and vegetable oils with huge profit margins for big food manufacturers at the expense of the consumer’s health Satiety Used 587,000 day worth of publicly available food data from MyFitnessPal to do some data crunching Fed state, glucagon, and type 1 diabetes closed system insulin pump How to eat less and manage hunger? In this episode we discuss: How people tend to get indoctrinated into dietary “camps” Why fixing your hormones can lead to weight loss… to a point. How the body can use fat directly as a fuel source Who needs to be showing high ketone levels and who doesn’t Why you don’t need to fear protein Why you should be focusing on whole foods. If fat loss is your main goal, you may not need extra fat in your diet Why calories DO still matter, even on keto What the heck is a CICO-path!? Busting myths around gluconeogenesis. Getting down and dirty about loose skin More fasting myth busting Why there is no silver bullet for fat loss AND MUCH MORE!!!!
