Episode 476 - Bruce Stock - We Throw a Curve Ball with Switch Pitcher and The Canadian Veterans PartyMeet Local Author & Veteran Bruce StockBruce Stock was in Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; he was the first PPCLI officer to become a vice-regal aide-de-camp to the Governor-General. He served at Rideau Hall with the Vaniers from 1964 to 1966 and was there with the Governor-General and Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson as they inaugurated and unfurled the new Canadian flag in 1965. On leaving the forces, Stock specialized in corporate communications and media relations, becoming a speechwriter for the founder of Shoppers Drug Mart and well-known philanthropist Murray Koffler. He was asked to re-enlist as a Public Affairs Officer for the Canadian peacekeepers during the Bosnian War in 1993. After the Dayton Accords ended the conflict in 1995, he returned to Bosnia as a Public Information Officer with the UN International Police Force.He concluded his military service with mandatory retirement, while working as a media relations officer for Emergency Measures Ontario, he played a key role in the Provincial Operations Centre during the devastating ice storm of January 1998. As a member of this team, he received the Amethyst Award, the province's highest award for achievements made by public servants.It's not his only award. In recognition of his 40 plus years as a practitioner, teacher, mentor and visionary in public relations, Bruce was inducted into the College of Fellows of the Canadian Public Relations Society in 2010. In recognition of his military services, he was recently honoured by the London Knights in their 2021 Remembrance Day ceremonies!Bruce now lives with his family in London, where he continues work as the President of a consulting firm, The Great Communications Secret. He joined the Canadian Forces, enlisting in January 2007, spending 15 years, beginning with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and ending as an Intelligence Operator involved in Cyber Intelligence and Warfare. His passion for his heritage and service led him to the front lines of Ukraine in 2022 after the illegal Russian occupation, sustaining injuries from artillery as a foreign fighter.But most importantly, Dustin is a listener of this podcast. The conflict claimed the lives of more than 2.5 million people and cemented the great power rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. Yet, the Korean War is largely a forgotten chapter of history. Wayne Eyre - Wikipedia Eyre was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1988.[3] In 1993 Eyre, who was a captain at the time, was deployed to Croatia as part of the United Nations Protection Force. He took part in Operation Medak Pocket in which he commanded a reconnaissance platoon, which witnessed the aftermath of ethnic cleansing in the village of Lički Čitluk.[9] He became commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 2004.[10] He went on to become commander of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in 2009 and,[3] after that, Deputy Commanding General of Operations for the United States Army's XVIII Airborne Corps in 2012, in which role he was deployed to Afghanistan.[10] He was appointed General Officer Commanding 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West in 2014.[10] In May 2018,[11] Eyre became the first non-American to serve as deputy commander of the United Nations Command in South Korea.[11][3][12][13] He was succeeded by Vice Admiral Stuart Mayer of the Royal Australian Navy in June 2019, and returned to Canada as Commander Military Personnel Command.[14] On July 12, 2019, it was announced Eyre would be appointed the commander of the Canadian Army, effective from August 20.[14][15] Eyre was appointed acting chief of the Defence Staff on February 24, 2021, following the stepping aside of Admiral Art McDonald pending an investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.[16][17][18] He was promoted to full general on August 13, 2021[19] and appointed as the official Chief of Defence Staff on November 25, 2021.[20] Eyre was made a Commander of the United States' Legion of Merit on April 24, 2021.[4] He had previously been appointed as an officer of the American order while a brigadier-general in 2015 and,[21] in 2020, was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster (second award) to the Legion of Merit.[22] On March 15, 2022, Eyre, along with 313 other Canadians, was banned from entering Russia, in protest of the Government of Canada's opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[23] --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tango-romeo/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tango-romeo/support

When Russia invaded Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put out a call to foreigners with combat experience to come and help. Paul Hughes, a former marksman and paratrooper with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, went. Paul has been in Ukraine ever since, where he founded HUGS: Helping Ukraine, Grass Roots Support.Run out of a garage through donations and volunteers, HUGS mostly helps fix army vehicles and distribute food and supplies to Ukrainians. But when Paul got a call asking him to cross Russian lines to rescue a six-year-old Ukrainian who'd been separated from her mother, he knew he had to accept the mission.  On this week's Storylines, CBC reporter Danny Kerslake, an old army buddy of Paul's, catches up with his friend to hear the story of how Paul risked his own life to save another's.Produced by Danny Kerslake. He had this sneaky suspicion that better food and exercise could lead to better outcomes. So, Robb was interested in health at an early age. He was a California State powerlifting champion and got into Thai boxing and jujitsu pretty early on. It led to an undergrad in biochemistry, and then he was looking at either medical school or the research track. In college, Robb was experimenting with his diet. He was tinkering with a low-fat, high-carb vegan diet. Robb ended up making himself very sick. On his vegan diet, Robb was on a blood sugar roller coaster all the time, he had all these gut issues, and his depression was in pretty rough shape. Eventually, he changed over to a paleo diet, and it saved his life. [08:30] Spoiler Alert: Not Everyone Knows What They Are Talking About on The Internet If you're new to eating a raw diet or keto, you need to know the basics. Paleo, keto, and carnivore all revolve around protein. Providing nuance can be confusing when starting a new lifestyle. It's valuable to look at a variety of different people when finding advice on the internet. Learn from people who have had success in their lifestyle and are flexible. Remember, when starting a new lifestyle, it should be simple. [14:45] Are You Having A Hard Time With Keto? Robb Wolf Explains Why A lot of the problems that people experience is just inadequate sodium intake. If you keep your electrolytes up, you can often subside cravings. Keto can be a train wreck if you are a high-intensity athlete. On hard training days, you may or may remain in ketosis despite eating 200 grams of carbohydrate per day. In August 1993, the 2nd Battalion PPCLI, (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) augmented with several reserve units engaged in the largest battle since the Korean War. The place, was a little town in Croatia known as the Medak Pocket. The Croatian Civil War is largely forgotten by the world, but not by those who were there. For some reason, precious little has been written or recorded about the Croatian Civil war, and very little of the history has been preserved. The United Nations invented a new term, "Ethnic Cleansing" to replace the word Genocide, so as to minimize the reality of the slaughter of civilians in that region. The French forced attempted to hold the ground, but failed in their mission. They were replaced with the Canadian troops, who held the ground despite incredible odds. For more than four days the battle raged on but the Canadians held firm, keeping the Croatians at bay. Out manned, and out gunned, the Canadians were successful in keeping most of the Serb civilians alive. The Canadian Government, and the United Nations buried the story. To this day most Canadians have no Idea about the courage and gallantry of their Soldiers at the battle of Medak Pocket. He had this sneaky suspicion that better food and exercise could lead to better outcomes. So, Robb was interested in health at an early age. He was a California State powerlifting champion and got into Thai boxing and jujitsu pretty early on. It led to an undergrad in biochemistry, and then he was looking at either medical school or the research track. In college, Robb was experimenting with his diet. He was tinkering with a low-fat, high-carb vegan diet. Robb ended up making himself very sick. On his vegan diet, Robb was on a blood sugar roller coaster all the time, he had all these gut issues, and his depression was in pretty rough shape. Eventually, he changed over to a paleo diet, and it saved his life. [08:30] Spoiler Alert: Not Everyone Knows What They Are Talking About on The Internet If you're new to eating a raw diet or keto, you need to know the basics. Paleo, keto, and carnivore all revolve around protein. Providing nuance can be confusing when starting a new lifestyle. It's valuable to look at a variety of different people when finding advice on the internet. Learn from people who have had success in their lifestyle and are flexible. Remember, when starting a new lifestyle, it should be simple. [14:45] Are You Having A Hard Time With Keto? Robb Wolf Explains Why A lot of the problems that people experience is just inadequate sodium intake. If you keep your electrolytes up, you can often subside cravings. Keto can be a train wreck if you are a high-intensity athlete. On hard training days, you may or may remain in ketosis despite eating 200 grams of carbohydrate per day. [19:40] It's Critical To Keep Your Electrolytes Up To Help With Sugar Cravings You need adequate sodium. Otherwise, you may suffer from lethargy and fatigue. If you are fairly active and live in a hot, humid environment, your base level of sodium intake needs to be higher than what you probably think. If you're eating a minimally processed diet, then a lot of your food doesn't come with salt. You need to add salt to your diet or make sure salt is included in your foods. If you have an electrolyte imbalance, it can feel like you're hungover. Participant's Bio: Erin Sikorsky is the Deputy Director of the Center for Climate and Security and the Director of the International Military Council on Climate and Security. She is also an adjunct professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, and serves on the advisory board to the Smith College Center for the Environment, Ecological Design, and Sustainability. Previously, she served as the Deputy Director of the Strategic Futures Group on the National Intelligence Council (NIC), where she co-authored the quadrennial Global Trends report and led the U.S. intelligence community's environmental and climate security analysis.  She is also the founding chair of the Climate Security Advisory Council, a Congressionally mandated group designed to facilitate coordination between the intelligence community and U.S. government scientific agencies.   LGen (ret'd) Mike Day CMM, MSC, CD, was born in Windsor Nova Scotia and grew up in Ontario, Quebec, and Birkenhead England prior to joining the Canadian Forces in 1983. Initially trained as an Infantry Officer he joined his Regiment, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and he has commanded at every level and rank, in a variety of units, and deployments around the world. The majority of his field and command time has been as an Operator within Canada's Counter Terrorist and Special Forces community commanding both Joint Task Force Two ( JTF 2), Canada's Special Operations Forces Command as well as a variety of other command assignments. He has also served in a variety of Senior Staff appointments including employment as the Canadian Armed Forces senior Military Officer in the Defence Policy Group, and the Chief Strategic Planner for the future of the Canadian Armed Forces. MGen Kelsey began his career in 1985 as a soldier with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. Commissioning into the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) in 1988 and later joining Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) in 2000, he has served in West Germany, the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. This is what kills people when they over hydrate with only water like in hazing events or while training for and running in marathons. We don't really excrete potassium or magnesium; there's a little bit but it's orders of magnitude different. Over the course of a month yes we need sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphates, bicarbonates - all of the electrolytes but in that time course of a hard, physical event or sauna, the main problem is the rapid and significant loss of sodium. So, that is another reason why you really have to target that." - Robb Wolf   Achieving Stable Sodium Levels Pre, Peri, and Post Workout     "Adequate post training or post stress sodium dramatically enhances recovery and there are a ton of mechanisms for why but one of the things that adequate sodium levels effect is cortisol release because it's less of a stress. If the body is getting adequate sodium, it's signalling the body that it's okay and it has enough nutrient resources to be able to recover. Bio: From Avonlea, Saskatchewan, Prohar graduated from Notre Dame College as valedictorian and male athlete of the year before joining McGill in 1994. While at McGill, Prohar earned a degree in economics and political science, played one season at defensive back in football (1994) and four years of hockey (1994-1998). With the hockey team, he wore No. 4 and suited up for 132 career contests, playing both up front and on the blueline, winning the Dick Pound award for proficiency & leadership in his last year. After graduating, he enlisted in the Canadian military, climbing the ranks to Commanding Officer and Chief of Staff for the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry before retiring after 21 years of service. In his time with the Canadian Forces, Prohar deployed to Afghanistan four times. Notably, he earned a Medal of Military Valour while attached to U.S. Special Forces, as well as a Meritorious Service Medal for work with the Afghanistan National Army. He currently resides in the Edmonton area with his wife Jody and two children, Owen and Emily, and works for the City of Leduc as the City Manager. University is about personal growth, the relationships you make, learning to communicate, making friends and learning to overcome adversity when things don't go your way. Leadership: The leader should consider his/her role in “Shared hardship” or “shared experiences”. The higher you get in an organization, the easier it is to not share in the hardships of the people actually doing the job. Make sure that as you rise in the ranks you stay in touch with the people that are doing the work. Understand not just the job they do, but who they are. Teaching leadership: “You gotta walk the walk”. You have to be out there doing it and you have to show that you are willing to what you are asking other people to do. Transferable lessons learned from sport: “Sometimes the easy answer, isn't the right answer”. It might not make a difference to take shortcuts in the short run, but in the long run it might make the difference between getting the puck out or your equipment malfunctioning in battle. You need resiliency, which means doing the right things, regardless of what is happening all around you. In high pressure situations: Trust your training. Maintain a clear mind. Be resilient. Trust the people around you. Drill. Practice. Execute. Mentorship: It's important to take examples of bad mentors and note the things that you don't want to do in your life. You can learn just as much from poor leaders as the good ones. Habits: Sleep hygiene and exercise. Getting a good night rest makes you a better person for the rest of the day. Mastery: The ability to impart knowledge upon someone else. The ability to teach someone a skill that you know or have.

Special Remembrance Day Episode 2020 Sergeant Lorne Ford is a son, father and decorated Canadian soldier whose one great wish was to lead his soldiers into battle. He was given his opportunity when he became section commander of three section with the princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He was headed to Afghanistan. It was six months after planes flew into the World Trade Center, and 2,977, people were killed, on September 11th, 2001. He was deployed in February, 2002. And on April 17th, 2002, he was part of the worst friendly fire incident since the Korean war, what became known as the Tarnak Farm Incident. I am honored to be speaking to him on this Special Remembrance Day Episode. Casualties of the Tarnak Farm Incident The soldiers who were killed were: Sergeant Marc D. His experience working with the Chickasaw Nation for two years as he helped to develop some of the infrastructures of their health risk assessment program.  Good morning VGR I am Arthur Laramie,  I am a Veteran of 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, joining the military in 2008, and serving as a Patricia from early 2009 until 2015. I was then posted to JSR, where retired via medical release in 2017.  During my military career, I completed two tours to Afghanistan, first as a Door Gunner in Kandahar, and second as a Convoy Ops driver in Kabul.  My efforts to bring awareness and aid to fellow members and veterans began with the establishment of my clothing-line, HAF (Hard As Fuk) Apparel. Our mandate at Hard As Fuk Apparel is to bring together members and veterans who are suffering from PTSD, OSI, Anxiety and Depression. The goal is to create a community that acts as a beacon of light in for those in the dark places. If you see any one wearing this brand you know they are safe to talk with and can actively listen. Our ultimate goal is to grow the brand to the point of being able to hire only veterans.  My second endeavour is The Iron King Ltd., a physical fitness facility that caters to the environmental needs of those service members, veterans, police, corrections, fire fighters, paramedics and nurses who have to deal with their stressors due to service. This facility is a home-away-from-home. It’s designed to create a comfortable and welcoming environment. Our staff are Mental Health First Aid qualified, and many of our members that are not service-persons make mental health their first priority. This space is meant to be a healthy choice to get out aggression, anger, frustration, sadness and pain, rather than those suffering turning to alcohol and drugs. We also host Project Trauma Support Peer Support group meeting every Sunday from 7pm to 9pm. Legitimate and true no-judgement zone. Come as you are, and be appreciated and cared for, for just that. Personally, business aside, I am making a difference by being open, honest and vulnerable. Actions speak louder than words, and participating in events like the Town Hall meetings, engaging people in their wants and needs, establishing my own political career, but most importantly, being a the best husband and father that I can be are ways I am leading the way in embracing my diagnosis, owning my life, and rewarding myself by helping others.
