Our first episode of the week focused more on the pitching side of the ball, so this time we’re looking at the offense. First, we tackle the Tommy Edman narrative, which may have grown larger than the skill set the player brings to the table. Then we quick-hit through Tyler O’Neill, Yadier Molina and Paul Goldschmidt. We spend a lot of time looking at the players profiles at Baseball Savant. Be sure to check out Tyler O’Neill’s ridiculous, create-a-player video game sliders. We ended the episode with some recommendations for your time on this off-day. Ben Humphrey suggests this Yahoo! piece on how humidors are coming to more MLB parks - including Busch Stadium. Ben Godar recommends the book A False Spring by Pat Jordan, a memoir from a “bonus baby” pitching prospect who never reached his potential. Get on the email list at cardinalsoffday.substack.com

Locked On Cardinals - Daily Podcast On The St. Louis Cardinals Podcast
Baseball rarely has just one hero, but Tyler O'Neill did his best Superman impression last night. He had two hits, a key stolen base and a remarkable game-ending (and gave-saving) catch. Dylan Carlson and Tommy Edman also added sparkling defensive gems in the sixth to help get the Cardinals out of a jam. John Gant needed every help from his defense he could get, but he delivered his best start when the Cardinals needed it the most. The Cardinals now send Carlos Martinez to the mound, in hopes of a series win in LA. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards played baseball this weekend! Sure, it was just two games and you really can't draw a lot of conclusions about them, but Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) had fun discussing them anyway. (There's a little bit of a rabbit trail about conditioning which leads to minor league talk, but you aren't really surprised about that, are you?) Harrison Bader, Tyler O'Neill, and Matt Carpenter are off to good starts. Can they continue? How much do you put into some early homers, anyway? All that and a bit on one of the surprising options for the rotation. Baseball is back!
It's Winter Warmup Weekend but that doesn't mean the news is just abundantly flowing. In fact, Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) spent more time than they ever have talking about the Cubs, which just tells you how quiet things are. Still, WWU at least gets the players in town to talk about things, even if they are in cliches, so the guys discuss Harrison Bader, Tyler O'Neill, Carlos Martinez, and Alex Reyes, among others. Plus your weekly dose of Nolan Arenado talk!
This week the guys talk about how nice it is that the Cardinals of St. Louis finally clinched a division and are headed back to the playoffs. Also, they mention that sweet sweet DEVIL MAGIC that the Cardinals seemingly have. They mention how unassuming Mike Shildt is but profess their love (at least some) for him. A shirtless Tyler O'Neill is always a good topic along with the Bench Mafia tag. Many thanks to the listeners and please give us a review and subscribe! ACKNOWLEDGE US CARDINALS (even though i finally think we forgot to mention it while recording)
It may be Friday the 13th but the 13 Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) are concerned about is the magic number keeping the Cards from the playoffs. Even with a 3-3 week, St. Louis maintained its four game lead in the division, even with the offense not really doing its best work. How concerning are the sputtering bats? Why has Tyler O'Neill not been seen in a week? What do the Cubs and Brewers have to do to catch the Cards and what is the likelihood they will? Plus rabbit trails about resigning Marcell Ozuna, if Jack Flaherty would agree to an extension, and the bench work of Matt Carpenter (another 13) and Jose Martinez. October is coming--even if the weather would disagree--and it's looking like St. Louis will be a part of it!
200 episodes in the books! Nate, Van, and Ron bask in the glory of merely existing for a long time by announcing a special giveaway for the show. They also take time to actually talk baseball (in between drinking) and discuss Tyler O'Neill, Homer Bailey, and next year's value of Tyler Glasnow and Luis Severino!
Cole and Ryan discuss the shortened Week 15 format, some guys who have been targets of trade rumors, Tyler O'Neill's dynasty value, and Fleaflicker's Most Added and Most Dropped lists, and some players who might be facing innings limits down the stretch and how to navigate that if you're relying on them to win your league. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dynasty-diamonds/support
The dynamic duo is back together again! In the return of both Tara and Alex, they revisit the idea of the potentially problematic outfield arrangement, including Marcell Ozuna and Dexter Fowler. The changes to the equation in the last couple of weeks are dramatic enough to earn a few extra minutes of show time, too! With both Ozuna and Fowler swinging hot bats, does the outlook change for the Cardinals daily lineup? What happens when Harrison Bader rejoins the active roster on Wednesday? And where do the at bats for Tyler O'Neill come from now? Plus, Alex connects Ozuna's wild wall climb, Fowler's home run "assist" and Martínez's unique swing to a little bit of history in this week's Chirp of the week! Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. Spring training is in full swing, but should we even be looking at the stats yet? Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) dive into that topic especially when it relates to Dexter Fowler. Does the fact that Tyler O'Neill is one of the few having a strong spring put more pressure on Fowler? The first cuts of the spring have finally happened and Ryan Helsley was one of them while Dylan Carlson was not. Does that really mean much of anything? Finally, like Tommy Pham before them, Jordan Hicks and Jack Flaherty had their contract renewed when they couldn't come to terms with the team. Is the system, like Flaherty says, broken? Plenty of good spring talk for your listening ears!
Hitters still aren't hitting, except Tyler O'neill, Are Fowler and Cecil still on the hot seat, Molina is back, Pitchers are looking good, Hicks is filthy
It's the first ever Chirps Mail Bag episode! Alex and Tara took your questions and, after talking about Bryce Harper one last time, answered them in long-winded fashion. What? There's a lot to be said about Tyler O'Neill and Brett Cecil! The outfield is crowded, and the bullpen is, too. Is there room for everyone's favorites? And, to prepare you for the Chirp of the Week, who would YOU call "Mr. March"? In many ways, Spring Training is one, giant math problem. The equations that result in a 25-man roster are anything but elementary, especially with such complications as "too many pitchers" or "five players for four spots." That's precisely the predicament the Cardinals appear to be in, and while competition is good and healthy, it still means there will be tough decisions to make before the club heads north. This week, Tara and Alex take an early look at what some of those decisions might be, and which players may draw the short straw. Does Jedd Gyorko remain with the team? Can José Martínez and Tyler O'Neill both find enough at bats as bench players? Will Drew Robinson's left handedness be the key to his MLB roster spot, or will Yairo Muñoz's strong 2019 campaign give him a leg up? Plus, Alex's Chirp of the Week features the one and only Willie McGee. At Winter Warm Up, John Mozeliak created some apprehension about Marcell Ozuna's physical readiness. When Yadier Molina followed that up by expressing his hopes that the slugger - who has spend the winter in the Dominican Republic - would be ready for Opening Day, the panic ensued. So, this week, Tara and Alex break down the Ozuna conundrum: - Is he healthy? - Why doesn't the team know anything? - Is it reasonable to worry that he might not be capable of playing a key role as planned? - With this knowledge (or lack thereof), why aren't the Cardinals all-in on Harper? - Does this set up to be Tyler O'Neill's big break? Also, it's Alex's birthday week. So, wish him the happiest of celebrations to him! "The trade deadline has passed, Tyler O’Neill IS Sex, and the Cardinals are good again!!! Let’s PaD, shall we?!" - Kyle
The trading deadline has come and gone and the roster looks....a lot like it did last week. One glaring difference, of course, is the fact that Tommy Pham is now a Tampa Bay Ray. Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) discuss the trade of Pham as well as the other deal of the deadline, Oscar Mercado to the Indians. (Though, of course, for more on the return from both trades, we recommend Colin Garner and Kyle Reis.) Pham moved, which was a surprise but shouldn't have been, but Jose Martinez and Bud Norris are still on the roster. Is that a mistake? The guys also get into the improved play as of late, at least from an interest standpoint, and talk about how Harrison Bader and Tyler O'Neill are both going to get playing time. How long can you run with Dexter Fowler? Where does the pledge to his playing time end and the expectation that Bader and O'Neill can push this team begin? Where does Mike Shildt and the front office draw the line. There's also Carlos Martinez talk and various other tidbits (and hopefully a softer intro) so we hope you enjoy!
Tristan H. Cockcroft and A.J. Mass discuss the replacements for Welington Castillo (4:30), rookies to look out for like Gleyber Torres and Tyler O'Neill (20:00), a Closer Carousel (26:00) and more. Plus, they take your #06010MLB questions.
Al Melchior, host of the Fantasy Baseball Hour on the FNTSY Sports Radio Network and writer for Fangraphs and Fantrax, joins us today to discuss a plethora of waiver pickups and examine expectations for a few top prospects. Some of the many questions Bobby and Al answer are who they would prefer to own between Jack Flaherty, Alex Reyes, and Zach Britton (10:05), whether Tyler O'Neill (21:35) has a shot at receiving regular playing time, and which unowned catchers are good stopgap options for Welington Castillo owners (42:53). We also spend time predicting when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (16:49) will finally get called up, share our thoughts on recent Pirates' call-up, Austin Meadows (26:53), and figure out if Willy Adames (39:20) has been called up for good, or is just having a cup of coffee in the majors. Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. A masterful performance by Jack Flaherty on Sunday highlighted so many positives that the youth of the Cards bring, which means Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Bird Seeds, @tarawellman) spend plenty of time talking about how that all works with the current lineup. With Alex Reyes coming back, can even games like Sunday's save Flaherty's major league spot? Do you run the risk of some of this talent withering at Memphis? You also have Jordan Hicks and Tyler O'Neill doing work this week and making the show. Can the Cards find a place for O'Neill's bat, for instance? Much of the talk is about the manager, however. We didn't plan it that way, it just sort of happened. From Flaherty's 120 pitches to Hicks' four games in five days to the disconnect on who is going to play shortstop, if you are a big fan of Mike Matheny.....this one might not be the show for you.

Patrick Reed. The Tyler O'Neill trade. Philadelphia Flyers goaltending. Jose Bautista. These are some of the things that really grind on Geoff's gears, nevermind the stuff on Brendan's list, such as the lack of Bob Cole in the playoffs. We start the episode with an update on the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, and some of the positives emerging from it. We finally do a wrap up on the Masters, which featured an unlikable winner (and the crowd confirmed it), before talking a little baseball, including the Mariners start to the season, and a reflection on the above mentioned trade. Changing gears into hockey, we talk a little Canucks, with the culture change of accountability in the organization, and a look at the upcoming playoff series in Utica, including the tough decisions AHL coaches are faced with. We go around the NHL playoff picture, with some updates on our prediction records, and also look at the coaching vacancies that have started to appear. All this plus our usual best and worst in Garbage Time!

Another weather postponement means Jeff spent four days in Chicago to see a total of one baseball game. Jeff and Brenden talk about today's roster developments and the possibility that Greg Holland may take some time to find his stuff again. There's also discussion on the evolution of the bench, the usage of the newly-promoted Tyler O'Neill, and the possibility that Kolten Wong may be starting to wear out his welcome. The minor league season is upon us, and it's still freezing cold. Memphis, however, is off to a blazing hot start and their offense is easily the best in the PCL. Tyler O'Neill as already hit four homers. Springfield's roster is bare, and Woodford, Helsley, and Greene struggled the first time through the rotation. Palm Beach's lineup is the deepest of all the affiliates, and they've shown more power than Kyle expected. Peoria only played four games before we recorded, but Juan Yepez is mashing the ball.
MLB Pipeline's Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis take on questions from Cespedes Family Barbecue's Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman regarding the Top 100 prospects. Among the topics: whether Tyler O'Neill can get time in the Cardinals' outfield (2:25), which Rays prospect will break into the Majors first (4:10), if Francisco Mejia can develop into a catcher for the Indians (7:15), where Scott Kingery fits into the Phillies' infield (11:45), if Willie Calhoun will hit enough to force his way into the Rangers' lineup (17:45), whether Luiz Gohara will start the season in the Braves' rotation (20:20) what Walker Buehler's 2018 campaign could look like (24:25) and where White Sox phenom Luis Robert will play this season. (29:50).
John bails on Kate this week because he is "moving," so Jamey Vinnick of Scout.com joins the show to talk about the Mariners' latest trade. They talk about the power of seeing Tyler O'Neill in the flesh, break down Andrew Moore's recent tough start, and talk about the new (old) Felix Hernandez. Jamey, who has spent time in Everett and Tacoma watching Brayan Hernandez and Brandon Miller, gives his evaluation on what the Mariners gave away, and Kate discusses who she thinks might amount to the most valuable piece in the trade. They analyze what David Phelps brings and discuss his strengths and weaknesses, and speculate about whether or not he could potentially help the Mariners rotation in 2018. They also watch the Mariners make Felix feel like his old self by giving him no run support over seven strong innings. That part is less fun. You can skip it. Finally, they take some Twitter questions and are simultaneously struck by a craving for Capri Sun and Fun Size Snickers (Kate) and pepperoni pizza (Jamey). John and Kate are joined by Jen Mac Ramos to discuss their experiences following the Mariners most successful minor league team this year - the High-A Modesto Nuts. Jen is fairly new to Lookout Landing but far from new to baseball or baseball writing. They can be found writing for Beyond the Box Score (Sabermetrics), McCovey Chronicles (Giants), Purple Row (Rockies), as well as working as a stats intern at Baseball Prospectus and contributing to The Hardball Times. They also filmed a group of minor league baseball players chasing chickens for us this year. Together we discuss the experience of learning to love minor league baseball, finding a connection to a team when it can change entire organizations in a single year, and the impression this year's dominant Modesto team has had on all of us. In an organization slim on high-end talent, we discuss at a few players who have made adjustments this year to improve their value, including OF Braden Bishop, OF Eric Filia, OF Luis Liberato, and OF/3B/C Joe DeCarlo. We also discuss the delight of home run derbies, be they in Miami, Tacoma, or, as Jen was witness to, on an aircraft carrier. Afterwards, we take your Twitter questions, including Tyler O'Neill future possibilities, Yankee Candle education, and VERY MIXED REVIEWS of Rich Aurilia. Music: Let's Go Crazy - Prince, You're a Wolf - Sea Wolf, Modesto, the Home I Know - Mick V. Rubalcava Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
