Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! Fulton County may have reached a tipping point as Democratic commissioners resist a court order requiring the appointment of two Republicans to the elections board. A judge has ruled that Fulton County Commissioners must appoint Julie Adams and Jason Frazier to its Board of Elections, as the law mandates no discretion for the commissioners to reject them. When the Democratic-majority Board of Commissioners declined, the court held them in contempt and imposed a $10,000-per-day fine. That penalty is now paused because the commissioners have appealed. Also, we got an early start to election season this year in Georgia as Debra Shigley and Jason Dickerson are headed to a September 23 runoff after finishing 1/2 in the August primary to replace Brandon Beach in a special election for SD21. Shigley, the lone Democrat in a seven-candidate special election led the primary with about 40% of the vote and Republican Jason Dickerson finished second with 17.4%, edging out Cherokee County Commissioner Steve West (17.1%).  We also touch on some updates to the Lieutenant Governor's race, as there are not 4 declared Republican candidates including Senate leaders Steve Gooch, John Kennedy, Blake Tillery, and Rep. David Clark. Sen. Greg Dolezal may also enter. On the Democratic side, state Sen. Josh McLaurin is the only announced candidate so far. The campaign is shaping up around high-stakes policy debates, particularly GOP efforts to eliminate Georgia's state income tax. The wolves continue to run from Dahlia through the storm in the bayou, and Hayley and Jackson, as usual, struggle to be good Alphas. Mary finds away to warn the pack when magic is afoot, but the Crescents find themselves in an all too familiar position, and I'm not talking about hanging out in a junkyard! At the compound, people do eventually decide to check if the dagger did indeed keep Klaus down, and face the consequences when it doesn't. Despite everyone trying to stop him,Klaus gets his revenge on many people: he pulls the Andi Star on Elijah, puts Rebekah and Marcel in a difficult situation that they may have overreacted to, and absolutely demolishes Hayley and Jackson. But Cami shares a plan that (of course) Klaus had ready, and sets us up for the finale!

Episode #249: Nathan Ruser, a geospatial analyst focusing on human rights, sheds light on a deeply troubling situation unfolding in Myanmar's Rakhine State. Ruser has meticulously detailed the actions of the Arakan Army (AA), revealing a pattern of arson attacks targeting Rohingya villages. These attacks, which spanned from late April to May 2024, have displaced tens of thousands and razed numerous communities to the ground.Ruser's insights highlight the complex interplay of military strategy and ethnic tensions. He explained that while the Myanmar junta has historically used divide-and-conquer tactics to destabilize regions, the AA's recent actions appear to be both retaliatory and strategically targeted. Despite their public denial, satellite imagery and eyewitness accounts suggest a coordinated effort to burn Rohingya settlements following the capture of military positions.“To say to the Arakan Army that if you want to be part of a future democratic federalized Burma, this is unacceptable! And to hope that despite the nationalistic take that the Arakan Army's had, and their clearly nationalistic bent, [I would] like to think that they would rather play a role in a future federalized Burma then act as a pariah state sandwiched between India and Burma. And in their statements, that they have shown as much willingness to align themselves with the national resistance, [which] does show that they would prefer a role in a future without the military. What they said and what they do is a different matter, and they've quite explicitly said that they are only looking for autonomy within a federalized Myanmar. They're not looking for independence.”

But as climate change continues to exacerbate wildfire seasons and a growing body of scientific research supports using fire to fight fire, Indigenous groups in the Klamath Basin are reviving cultural burning practices that effectively controlled forest fires for centuries. In an episode originally published June 2022, National Geographic photographer Kiliii Yüyan introduces us to people bringing back this cultural practice and teaching the next generation how to use fire. Year after year, wildfires have swept through Northern California's wine and dairy country, threatening the region's famed agricultural businesses. . Evacuation orders have become a way of life in places like Sonoma County, and so too have exemptions to those orders. Officials in the county created a special program allowing agricultural employers to bring farmworkers into areas that are under evacuation and keep them working, even as wildfires rage. It's generally known as the ag pass program. Reporter Teresa Cotsirilos investigates whether the policy puts low-wage farmworkers at risk from smoke and flames. This story is a partnership with the nonprofit newsroom the Food & Environment Reporting Network and the podcast and radio show World Affairs. Then KQED's Danielle Venton introduces us to Bill Tripp, a member of the Karuk Tribe. Tripp grew up along the Klamath River, where his great-grandmother taught him how controlled burns could make the land more productive and protect villages from dangerous fires. But in the 1800s, authorities outlawed traditional burning practices. Today, the impact of that policy is clear: The land is overgrown, and there has been a major fire in the region every year for the past decade, including one that destroyed half the homes in the Karuk's largest town, Happy Camp, and killed two people. Tripp has spent 30 years trying to restore “good fire” to the region but has faced resistance from the U.S. Forest Service and others. Twelve years ago, the Forest Service officially changed its policy to expand the use of prescribed burns, one of the most effective tools to mitigate massive, deadly wildfires. But Reveal's Elizabeth Shogren reports that even though the agency committed to doing controlled burns, it hasn't actually increased how much fire it's using to fight fire. The Forest Service also has been slow to embrace another kind of good fire that experts say the West desperately needs: managed wildfires, in which fires are allowed to burn in a controlled manner to reduce overgrowth.
