This is a masterful message from Pastor Duane Roberts of Calvary Chapel. Also, a big shout-out to Dr. Ashley Schimschock and Nurse Sam at Veterinary Emergency Group of Boynton Beach for their assistance in helping me with the much-needed formula for two baby kittens that were left in a box in a garbage can located in a parking lot where I feed very hungry felines. Someone had left three newborn kittens out in the cold; one of them was already dead. Slick Puppy and I normally have kitten formula, but this time we were out. Well, the Lord is great when he provides wisdom when needed,, and I thought I might be able to go to Veterinary Emergency Group in Boynton Beach to see if they could help me with some formula. When I went in I was greeted by Dr. Ashley Schimschock and one of the nurses, Sam. They were both kind and empathetic for these babies, and provided me with the kitten formula as it was so early in the morning, no stores where I could purchase would be open for a few hours, and these kittens needed nourishment immediately. They could not have been more helpful and professional. Jaggy and I thank you for tuning in and SHARING!

Jessie Brown, LVT, serves as the Blood Bank Director at Veterinary Emergency Group. She has over 19 years in specialty and emergency medicine, experience in management and operational roles, and developed and ran a regional veterinary blood bank. In her previous position at BodeVet, Brown established a comprehensive donor colony, performed FDA level advanced transfusion medicine including but not limited to apheresis procedures and held training boot camps to teach other veterinary professionals about establishing and maintaining their own in-house blood banks. Brown's experience in the profession, her deep understanding of the critical need for blood and blood products in veterinary practice, commitment to excellence, and passion for advancing the veterinary profession makes her an asset to VEG, veterinary blood banking and the profession as a whole. Her goal is to remove supply driven transfusion decisions for our patients and allow veterinary professionals the opportunity to treat based off of what is best for their patients. During her downtime, she finds joy in hiking with her husband and dogs - bonus points if it is in the Pacific Northwest, and playing with her two cats. Brown's motto is: Blood is life so pass it on! Sponsored by VEG As a career emergency veterinarian since 2003, David Bessler, VMD, has a passion for helping people and their pets when they need it most. His intense focus on families made him realize emergency care was broken and wasn't working for anyone. Bessler took a holistic view of the ER experience, from start to finish, and from every angle, to make it better. Pets would be treated like people and pet parents like human beings. In 2014, armed with a vision and a dedicated team of like-minded people—the first VEGgies!—he purchased his first VEG hospital. They worked to reinvent the emergency experience. It was in this first hospital that VEG became “not normal,” in a good way! This new experience was fully transparent, with an open floor plan. They created a comfortable setting for pets, even if that meant getting on the floor with them; and keeping people and their pets together throughout treatment. Bessler also defined a positive company culture to make sure VEG would deliver on this revolutionary shift. It was exactly what pet parents and emergency vet professionals wanted, as VEG has the highest NPS in the vet industry. During his 20+ years in the field, Kenichiro Yagi, MS, RVT, VTS (ECC), (SAIM), has dedicated his career to reimagining veterinary nursing. He obtained his VTS certification in emergency and critical care as well as small animal internal medicine and achieved his master's degree in Veterinary Science. He is currently the Chief Veterinary Nursing Officer for Veterinary Emergency Group, and the Program Director for the RECOVER Initiative. Over the years, he has received the Veterinary Technician of the Year award by NAVTA, the Veterinary Technician of the Year award by the California Veterinary Medical Association, the RVT of the Year award by the California RVT Association, and the AVECCTN Specialty Technician of the Year award. He is also an advocate for the Open Hospital Concept, encouraging veterinary practices to invite the pet owners to “the back” as a part of the team.
Dr. Tannetje' Crocker joins the podcast to expand on a previous episode where she and Dr. Roark discussed the ethics and implementation of intentional discounting. In this episode, Drs. Crocker and Roark talk about the feedback from that episode, what they see as valid criticism and what they disagree with. The conversation then turns to a larger perspective on supporting pet owners who struggle to avoid finance, and the realities of working in a corporate emergency practice vs owning an independent clinic. She is passionate about mentorship and empowering veterinary professionals to embrace the profession and find joy and success. Growing up Dr. Crocker competed on horses and was inspired to become a veterinarian. Since graduation she has worked as an equine ambulatory vet, small animal general practitioner, and emergency veterinarian. She currently lives in Texas with her spirited 10 year old daughter, funny 6 year old son, and supportive husband of 16 years. She works as an ER Veterinarian for Veterinary Emergency Group in Dallas, TX. Recently she was excited to purchase Alta Vista Animal Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. She plans to continue her support of fellow veterinary professionals, both virtually and in person through her various endeavors.
“By bringing customers to the back along with their pets, they were able to see everything that was going on. And so we did that for transparency reasons. What we discovered then is when the pet owners we call customers were able to see the caregivers, what they were doing, they were really appreciative. It added value in their eyes to the work that we were doing." — David Bessler It's a 2-for-1 episode! This week Carol speaks to two leaders at Veterinary Emergency Group–aka VEG– David Glattstein and David Bessler. VEG is revolutionizing the veterinary emergency industry through a "Vegolution", a holistic experience for pet owners in emergencies. Their organization currently has 41 ERs for pets across 14 states and treats over 300,000 emergencies annually. Both founders recount how luck and timing played a role in their successful partnership, and how they prioritize differentiation at every point for all their teams and employees. You'll also learn about VEG's unique "nerd program" to produce highly-skilled emergency doctors and nurses. The episode also discusses the misconception of dreading or avoiding the veterinary ER and how the company is changing that perception. They explore the historical precedent for separating patients from their loved ones in hospitals and how their “open” concept changes that.Looking at the current state of emergency medicine, the founders delve into a post-Covid issue: the quickly growing pet population and the shortage of veterinarians. BIOSDavid Bessler, founder, and CEO of VEG, is a veterinary professional who is passionate about transforming the outdated veterinary clinic model in the United States. He believes that the cramped and cluttered spaces of most clinics create an unwelcoming environment for pets and their owners. David is determined to inspire change by educating future veterinarians about the importance of clean and modern clinics. He recognizes that legacy practices are difficult to change, however, he is committed to making veterinary care better for both animals and their owners.David Glattstein, co-founder and President of VEG, is a visionary who worked with Bessler to revolutionize emergency veterinary services. David's expertise helped scale VEG to a nationwide level. He is passionate about the added dimension brought by customers interacting with each other, what David calls the 'holistic thing.' David believes that everyone will benefit from open and holistic participation in the process.Learn more about David Bessler and David Glattstein and VEG.You can find more information on all our episodes at Vertical Elevation, and you can find Carol on LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube.

It would be hard to find someone who knows the veterinary world better than David Liss, MBA, RVT, CVPM – he's never had a job outside vet med, having gone from kennel assistant to a VTS in both emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine, a CVPM, and most recently regional operations director (“managing managers”) for the Veterinary Emergency Group. We could have talked to David about a thousand different things, but when we asked what he'd like to discuss, he picked one of our favorites: communication. David talks about this “soft skill” in scientific terms, explaining how to override our lizard brains by asking questions (another of our favorite things) and how to make people feel emotionally safe while you're engaging them in a tough conversation. Imagine a world where vets and their team members are bubbling with excitement about their job. Where they go on about how great their clients are, they talk about how good their pay is, and about how very fulfilling their careers are... Can't do it? Don't worry - our guest for this episode has been imagining exactly this, and if the buzz out there about VEG is anything to go by, then he and his team of Veggies may well have found a way to make this a reality. VEG, or Veterinary Emergency Group, is a US-based group of emergency-only vet hospitals and Dr David Bessler is the CEO and co-founder. He's been a career emergency veterinarian since 2003, worked with reptiles at the Bronx Zoo, teaches “Veterinary Science” to elementary school children at the American Museum of Natural History and was even been featured on the one and only Sesame Street, and, as you'll hear, he's a man with a very clear vision. So who's this episode for? We'll, EVERYONE in the profession. Whether you're are a vet or a Veg or a nurse or even a vegetinary student, basically, anyone attached to a vet business - there are some things in here that you need to hear. If you are a vet business owner then this is DEFINITELY for you. Join us as we veg with Bessler on topics like why mission, vision and core values are so much more than just corporate speak, how a clinic can 'do shit for free', yet pay well AND still be profitable, why you may be on the wrong island, why the spiritual side of your job is critical for career happiness, and so much more. Go to thevetvault.com for show notes and to check out our guests' favourite books, podcasts and everything else we talk about in the show. In this week's episode of The Veterinary Business Success Show, Brendan Howard is joined by the founder of the Veterinary Emergency Group, Dr. David Bessler. David is a long-time emergency veterinarian who earned his bachelor's degree in animal sciences from Cornell University in 1999 and his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. After graduating, David worked as the director of an emergency and critical care at the center for specialized veterinary care, before moving into the role of a senior emergency clinician until 2014. Utilizing his experience in Emergency Veterinary Care, Dr. David saw where practices were failing and took it upon himself to buy his own small emergency veterinary practice and began Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG). VEG now has now grown into a nationally recognized emergency veterinary business with 18 hospitals across 7 states in America. Tune in to learn how the VEG business plans for emergency practices have enabled happier clients, staff members, and patients.
David Bessler thinks the traditional veterinary medical practice, with its separate treatment rooms, closed surgeries and recovery areas, and hard-to-reach veterinarians is not just outdated, but broken. With nearly two decades of emergency veterinary medicine under his belt, and public education work at the Museum of Natural History and appearances on Sesame Street, he asserts a modern practice is oriented to people, service-based, open, and transparent. Decisions are shared, and authoritarian attitudes are abandoned. His first Veterinary Emergency Group practice tested his ideas … and they worked. There are now 27 Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) locations, with more in the works. Focusing exclusively on veterinary emergency medicine, each practice is completely transparent to the customers. For example: When you arrive, there is no paperwork … because your dog needs help NOW, not after you fill out a form; When you call with a medical question, you get an answer from a veterinarian … not a nurse or a receptionist; When you are waiting for attention for your dog's torn toenail, and it takes a while to get it, you are relaxed and understanding … because you see the heroic efforts the veterinarians and staff are making on behalf of other animals. Why do you see it? Because you're all in one big treatment area. There is no “back room” in VEG hospitals. It's all one open triage floor. And because animal lovers all share an essential love and goodness, you may even feel called to help another person's dog or cat that may be in more serious jeopardy than yours is … and you'll feel great about it. That's all part of the point. Bessler and his partner, David Glattstein, have created a very different breed of veterinary medical practice, one that caters directly to human nature and appeals to our greatest ideals. In this wide-ranging conversation with the charismatic and whipsmart David Bessler, we find out why he thinks that people are good, and why he tries so hard to create openness, togetherness, heroic efforts, and meaningful moments. Also: why puns are an important part of his business' culture. About David Bessler Dr. David Bessler has been a career emergency veterinarian since 2003. He spent time caring for reptiles at the Bronx Zoo, teaches “Veterinary Science” to elementary school children at the American Museum of Natural History and was even featured as Dr. Dave, teaching kids on Sesame Street. Dr. Bessler has a vision to revolutionize emergency veterinary medicine through a holistic, radically open experience for the caregiver, customer and patient. In 2014, he purchased his first emergency vet hospital, which allowed him to bring his vision to life. Today VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group) has 27 ERs for pets in 10 states, treats over three hundred thousand pet emergencies each year, and boasts the highest NPS in the veterinary industry. Courage. Grit. Persistence. Some might call it stubbornness. Whatever you call it - our guest for this episode has it in spades. Dr Mariana Pardo is an emergency and critical care specialist at the Veterinary Emergency Group, in Whiteplains, New York. She qualified as a vet in Santiago, Chile, in 2009, and then moved to the United States where she walked a long long road to the first female emergency and critical care specialist from Latin America - but I won't ruin the story for you here - it's a good one. There are not many people in our field that are working as hard as Ken Yagi is to change it. To know Ken is to know how many Boards and Committees he serves on, how much work he puts in every day to try to make things better, and what it looks like to be the Chief Veterinary Nursing Officer for Veterinary Emergency Group, or VEG. That last point is where we spend the bulk of our time in this episode. Ken Yagi, MS, RVT, VTS (ECC) (SAIM), recently sat down with us to discuss his role inside VEG, the incredible talent that they have acquired, future expansion plans, and much more. You may have seen posts online recently about the higher wages and benefits VEG offers to veterinary technicians, and we wanted to know what they're putting in the water (or coffee) at VEG and whether or not this is sustainable. They believe it is and our profession will be better for it. We could talk to Ken for hours about so many different things, but with the current job market, we felt this was a good first step. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. David Bessler of Veterinary Emergency Group or (VEG) which has exploded on the scene of ER/Critical Care since 2014. What has been fueling the growth of VEG. How his role has shifted and changed over time. What are the core values of VEG and how were they developed. Dr. Bessler's favorite weekly activity. Sometimes you have be willing to pause, reflect, and take a step back to find what works best for you. And this episode's guest is a testament to that line of action. Dr. Kerri Nelson grew up in Denver, Colorado. She is a graduate of Kansas State University and completed a rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. She initially started down the path toward becoming a criticalist, but made the difficult decision to leave a critical care program in New York after 6 months. She moved back to Denver and fortunately was able to reconnect with her love for emergency medicine. After working at a large specialty hospital in a Denver suburb for 2 years, she joined “ Veterinary Emergency Group” in 2019. She is currently the Medical Director of VEG Denver, which opened in September of 2020. Dr. Nelson loves managing critical cases, especially sepsis, metabolic and acid-base derangements, and polytrauma. She is passionate about teaching, and loves working for a company that gives her the opportunity to train newly graduated veterinarians. In our conversation with Dr. Nelson, we cover: Making the difficult decision of leaving the critical care program in New York after 6 months Overcoming challenging work environments and doubters - was told she'd never get a job if leave. The power of positive mentorship How VEG is leading the new frontier of client-focused veterinary clinics, where owners can see and be involved in everything The role of a Medical Director at an emergency clinic Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Nelson can be found running marathons, skiing, riding horses, reading books on leadership and personal growth, and spending lots of time with family and friends.
