In the latest podcast from EMEA Recruitment, we spoke to international fundraiser and keynote speaker Charles Hammerton about his struggles with mental health. “Someone needs to stand up and say, something’s not right here – we need to talk about it.” This podcast episode not only addresses the difficulties of mental health issues, but details how Charles has learnt from his past – and who helped him do it. It’s a difficult topic for many people to discuss, but Charles explains the importance of having an open and honest conversation. Although Charles had a “fantastic upbringing”, his life went through what he describes as a “normal unravelling”, before plummeting into difficult experiences in a short space of time. This led him to have suicidal thoughts, which no one in his life knew he was suffering. That’s where Bandit comes in. Bandit the ferret (now the namesake of his bushcraft business, Adventure Bandits) gave Charles a reason to hold on.  Charles decided to set off on his own adventure and, in his own words, “do me”. This journey led him on a walk across the country, skateboarding across London, and driving to the Arctic Circle and across Europe. He’d even completed his bucketlist by the time he was 25!  Unfortunately, Bandit passed away upon Charles’ return to the UK. Alongside Adventure Bandits, Charles has now formed a mix of different work commitments and hobbies, including keynote speaking.  We discuss why Charles tells his story, his influences and why he’s made some enemies – he even tells us what he’s terrified of feeling on his deathbed!    Here are some helpful time stamps for listening to Charles’ story: Charles’ background and upbringing, hitting the road in a camper van with a ferret 03:00 The importance of talking about mental health 08:00 How a ferret called Bandit helped Charles and inspired his company Adventure Bandits 11:00 The value of talking, how to learn from experiences 14:00 How Charles structures his public talks 16:20 What Charles has learnt from his journey 23:00 Support from the Prince’s Trust 25:30 Charles’ inspirations 28:30 Fears, achievements, work, ideas 38:30 Swimming with Dolphins in the Falklands and making the most of opportunities 43:40 How to connect with Charles 47:00   We hope you enjoy the podcast – remember to comment and share.   If you want to reach out to Charles, you can connect with him through LinkedIn on: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/charles-hammerton-adventure-bandits-bushcraft-1386b1146   Or visit Charles’ website: https://www.charleshammerton.com/ Or: https://www.adventurebandits.co.uk/   Or through Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RealCharlesHammerton Or on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charleshammertoninspire   The podcast is hosted by founder of EMEA; Paul Toms and Executive Recruiter and Senior Consultant; Jenny Callum.   To find out more about EMEA recruitment visit: https://emearecruitment.eu   Follow EMEA Recruitment on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/emea-recruitment-limited/   Or connect with Paul on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/paultomsemea   Or Jenny at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennycallumemea   Please like and share the post so your network can benefit from this advice.   If you have any questions or topics you would like EMEA Recruitment to cover in our podcasts in the future, please send me a message on LinkedIn and we will look to help as much as possible.   #emearecruitmentpodcast #paultoms #jennycallum #emearecruitment #switzerland #thenetherlands #singapore #charleshammerton #adventurebandits

When did you make your first million? Charles got his first million when he was working on his first branch of Cotton Depot. During that time, profit was really good, and he was incredibly happy the moment when he found out he got his first million. During this journey to a million, what were some of the principles that helped you make that first million? A good name matters a lot in the field of fabrics. That's important because the business model in the fabrics industry focuses on loaning.  Charles was fortunate enough that his parents had already built up a good name and that was brought down to him and his siblings. This helped them negotiate better terms with fabric manufacturers that led to better profits for him. What Charles focused on was to protect and maintain his name. He had to always practice a certain level of integrity to keep his name clean and attractive to his business partners. Do you have a separate bank account dedicated to all of your liabilities? At the start of his business, Charles had his own and his business' money mixed in one account. He segregated by putting percentages on his money. He relied on his gut feel. However, when the business gets larger, you need to separate your personal money with your business' money. There should be a strict line between these two. Now that you handle Strat Quad and Dropify, do you still sell fabrics? Charles no longer sells fabrics because he already sold Cotton Depot. His passion shifted from putting up fabric stores all over the Philippines to e-commerce mainly because his heart went where the money was.  e-commerce is a booming industry. Charles decided to fully focus on e-commerce once it grew exponentially bigger than his fabric business. Slowly, e-commerce became his primary livelihood while the fabrics business turned into a hobby.  During this transition, were there times when you neglected Cotton Depot? Charles was not afraid to admit that he was guilty of neglecting the Cotton Depot at that time. It reached the point where mismanagement occurred. Fortunately, he already foresaw this happening and it led to his decision to sell the business.  They didn't sell the business because it was on a decline. In fact, it was still making a profit. Nothing was wrong with the technicalities of the business. It's just that Charles' heart wasn't there anymore.  If it was still making money, wasn't it still good passive income? What were some other factors that led to this decision? Passive income is money that comes in without the need for you to manage it. The problem with retail is that it requires meticulous supply chain management. You have to make sure that things are going smoothly. Charles tried hiring people to fill in the gap of him not being focused on it anymore. But when he realized that he no longer wanted to continue minding this business, he already chose to sell it instead. When Charles had already decided to sell fabrics, he had to make sure that he sells the business to someone who has experience. He wanted to sell it to someone who loves the fabrics industry—someone who will spend more to keep it alive. That's why he gave his business to the highest bidder. Was it difficult selling your business? How was your experience? Charles isn't a person that dwells one the more technical aspects of selling a business, mostly because of his upbringing. He doesn't need meticulous documentation or an intricate process, all he needs is the trust between two business people. Support the show (https://tribe.leadershipstack.com/)

We long to belong. The desire to be a part of a community is a fundamental human yearning, yet broad swaths of Americans have never felt more isolated. In fact, four out of ten report regularly feeling lonely, and very few have more than two people they consider confidants. Why is this happening? What can we do about it? Is there an opportunity for businesses and organizations to fill the void? And if so, how do we design for belonging in brand communities? Today, Jeffrey takes a deep dive into the concept of belonging with executive consultant Charles Vogl, author of The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging. Charles describes his personal feelings around being an outsider and discusses the top three trends contributing to the loneliness epidemic in the US. He shares his experience at Yale Divinity School, explaining the pervasive ‘crisis of belonging’ on campus and how that phenomenon informs his current work. Charles also offers his definition of community as shared mutual concern and discusses how brands might foster genuine connection among a customer base. Jeffrey asks why leaders and event planners miss the mark, and Charles uncovers the necessity of facilitating shared experiences and investing in the growth of diverse groups. Listen in for insight on the value of story in revealing what a business values and learn how you can build a brand for belonging. Elise’s guest today is Cowboy poet laureate and published author, Charles “Smokey” Culver. Charles has written over 500 poems and his most recent book — A Wrap and a Hooey — was nominated as the cowboy poetry book of the year. Beyond his poetry, Charles is an expert witness in court cases, a volunteer worker at Habitat for Horses, an avid photographer, and a singer and songwriter.   Charles main passion -- cowboy poetry -- is a form of poetry that first grew out of a tradition created by cowboys and hands working on cattle drives and ranches. After a long, hard day of work, they would gather around a campfire and entertain one another with tall tales and folk songs.   This episode, Charles “Smokey” Culver tells us all about cowboy poetry, the cowboy lifestyle, and the Cowboy Code; his range of passions and the work he does outside of writing; his life philosophies; and some of the many reasons he loves poetry. Charles also recites several of his poems ... from beautiful, to nostalgic, to absolutely hilarious — he can do it all.   Topics of Discussion: [:45] About Elise’s guest today. This week we go deep in part two of my epic four-hour conversation with documentarian and gonzo journalist Charles Shaw – one of this show’s most requested return guests. In part one, Charles laid out the map of the problem: a world in crisis, an age of epidemic trauma and addiction. In this episode, we get into his self-experimentation with sleep deprivation to understand the hallucinatory reality of America’s homeless, his journey of healing and recovery working with entheogens and military veterans, and how facing and embracing our darkness with humility and courage may be the only way we can prepare ourselves to make a meaningful contribution to our world. Get ready for a heady brew of grit, dark humor, grief and relief, and the luminous truth that awaits us on the other side of suffering…Support these vital conversations with a small monthly contribution:http://patreon.com/michaelgarfieldSubscribe on Apple Podcasts • Stitcher • Spotify • iHeart RadioJoin our Facebook Discussion Group––––––––––––––––Part One:https://www.patreon.com/posts/16862172Charles on Youtube & Vimeo:https://www.youtube.com/user/UnheardVoicesArchivehttps://vimeo.com/nomadcinema“Meeting The Self You Aren’t,” excerpts from my talks with Charles on the 2010 Light & Shadow Tour:https://evolution.bandcamp.com/album/meeting-the-self-you-arentIn October and November 2010, I traveled to thirty cities across the United States with journalist and documentary film-maker Charles Shaw on what we called "The Light & Shadow Tour." Half our time was spent filming interviews for his documentary about the War on Drugs and prison industrial complex; half our time was spent engaging audiences in deep discussion on the role of what psychologists call "the shadow" in personal and cultural transformation. The shadow is the part of ourselves so profoundly disowned that it shows up not as a quality of the self, but a trait of other people - not a choice that we are making, but a fate that imposes itself upon us. And to whatever degree we continue to refuse acknowledgment of our shadows, we remain the desperate victims of life instead of its joyous collaborators. It isn't easy to write a new story of the self - and to constantly re-write that story, when new truths come to us in the form of disarming companions, rude awakenings, and other surprises. But it is the work set out before us, if we are to live as whole people and give the most of ourselves to the birthing of a new and better world.––––––––––––––––IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:- How seeking validation for his work made him miserable, but he moved through the crisis and the victimhood into a new sense of completeness;- How service to other people in the trauma and addiction healing process as an intake and integration facilitator at ibogaine clinics accelerated his own healing;- The puzzle of figuring out how to use psychedelics as part of the healing process for people with diagnosed mental disorders, for whom the action of psychedelics is still poorly understood;- The homelessness and drug addiction situation in San Francisco, a city in crisis and an “open-air asylum”;- How he took a personal journey into the insanity and delusional states of America’s growing homeless population through a gonzo journalist’s approach of firsthand speed use and sleep deprivation (up to nine days at a time, under clinical supervision);- What he learned from three years of intense work with entheogens about the experience of death and the emotional process of moving through epochal transitions;- Hanging out with the “shadow people,” the characteristic hallucinations that externalize our own repressed internal voices when we start to lose our minds;- Our resistance to treatment and medicine, because keeping things the way they are is easier, because healing is an ordeal that challenges our identities;- Getting to the heart of the inquiry of “Why am I doing what I’m doing, here?” and “What do I WANT?”- What it is to lose touch with the young and hungry, eager and determined artist that we used to be and then to find it in a painful retrospective, and to realize it was because we were out there seeking validation, hustling, instead of giving our lives to the work;- Is the conversation to identify the problem, or to critique by creating and move toward solutions?- How do we even TRY and turn the global conversation toward concerted action for positive and universal (planetoid) change?- We manage to sneak some Blade Runner 2049 in there…- Aging and growing older in our culture, which nobody wants to talk about;- A Luke Skywalker-esque critique of now-institutional festival culture;- The Pluto Transit (!!!);- Hungry Ghosts;- Going into the heart of darkness with veterans on ayahuasca and understanding what teamwork can do for psychedelic healing;- His dialogue with ayahuasca about visiting his late sister in the underworld, and how he found his peace with her passing;- Dodging the psychedelic messiah complex;- The astrology of Jesus and Piscean martyrdom;- How study of the archetypes inform our passage through the phases of our lives;- The truth about how being a prophet is a difficult, unappreciated act, not this glamorous role we imagine it to be;- How his film The Plastic People, on Tijuana and the deportation crisis, led to sweeping reforms in Mexico and pissed off countless Trump supporters on Netflix;- The challenges of documenting the secret history of the ibogaine underground;- The futility of protest in the postmodern information warfare landscape;- What Charles thinks was REALLY going on at Standing Rock, and how it’s related to the infiltration and disruption of the Women’s Movement;- How the government collects and processes intelligence on protesters and other political dissidents;- Can you have fun and still effect social change?- How learning the surprising hidden story of his own family changed how Charles thinks about identity and the human condition;- Big Mind Process and listening to the voice of “The Damaged Self”;- And more!––––––––––––––––CHARLES QUOTES:“I thought I was doing the right thing the whole time. I thought I was fighting the good fight. But at some point, you have to ask yourself why you keep ending up in the same situations.”“We are way too liberal with our use of the word ‘insane’ in our culture. Most of what people call insane is just plain suffering. End of story.”“Power is power for a reason. You want to take that shit on firsthand, you’re going to get hurt. A lot of young people don’t realize that.”“Healing’s an ordeal, and that’s the thing: most people check out too early. They actually make a decision on some level to just rather live their lives in dysfunction and unhappiness and keep repeating patterns and cycles rather than go through it, and go through the ordeal… Healing Land requires a stay in Shadow Land. If you want to heal, you gotta go through Shadow Land first.”[With homeless delusional behavior] “The drugs aren’t the problem, it’s the lack of sleep.”“Hoffman tested the acid, Shulgin tested the MDMA, I tested the insanity.”“Even Elon Musk cannot save the world, and frankly, I don’t think he’s a very palatable human being to begin with, but people love him and he’s kind of a sacred cow and you can’t criticism him, but I say ALL these billionaires are shifty and you can’t trust any of them.”“I’m not very good at killing myself. I should probably STOP.”“I don’t have to know how to do it right to know you are doing it wrong.”“Being a prophet means you’re never going to experience the things other people experience in life…it means you’re going to be alone and your whole existence is defined by your alienation from the status quo. But if you can accept it…”“Anybody who thinks there aren’t informants in the Native American community does NOT know the history of the Native American community.”“What is healing all about? So much of it is about accepting shit you can’t control.”“I’m not saying I’m better than anyone. I’m unique. I serve a unique function. And right now my unique function is to try to make the people that are the least understood in our culture more understood. I can do that. And I’ve sacrificed everything – my life, my body, a family, stability, everything – in pursuit of this, now across my fifth platform, the fifth group of despised subcultures. And I’m just going to keep going until we get to all of them. I may put the brakes on when we get to pedophiles – I’m not sure I can make an argument for that – but I study the people that do. Because it’s all about compassion. It is ALL about learning compassion.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
