The Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, has recently warned of a loneliness epidemic in the United States and has cited research suggesting that loneliness can be as toxic to our health as 15 cigarettes per day. Unfortunately, societal trends do not support people getting together in real life. Attendance at virtually all community gatherings is on the decline, whether we are referring to social groups, religious organizations, or even picnics.Sadly, our 35,000-year-old brains are not wired for the isolation we are experiencing these days. Our social brains crave community and togetherness, and even the most introverted of us need some communal connection, but we rarely know how to do it or where to even look. And that is why I'm so happy to speak with Charles Vogl (https://www.charlesvogl.com/). Charles has spent time in diverse communities such as the Peace Corps in Zambia, Yale University where he did his master's degree in spiritual traditions, philosophy, and business., and here in Silicon Valley where he has served at Google's Vitality Lab. He is the author of a book I loved called The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging. Charles speaks about the principles that help communities thrive and why we need them. I agree with bestselling author Richard Leider, who said of the book, "At last, here is an insightful guide to create the community you have envisioned for yourself and others." Amen, brother.   So, listen in as Charles and I talk about the art of community.

Today, we're living in the loneliest time in history. Despite the marketing campaigns from major social media companies claiming to be able to connect with one another, technology, globalization, and urbanization have driven humanity at large to be more isolated, disconnected, and disengaged than any other time in human history. Charles Vogl has made it his mission to help reconnect us and to build better communities. Charles served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Sub-Saharan Africa where he worked on justice for human rights abuse and providing rural health care for his host village. Later he created Broken English Productions documentary film company in NYC. His PBS projects won numerous international awards, including the Amnesty International Movies That Matter Award. He then began advising and developing leadership and programs worldwide within organizations including Google, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Twitch, Amazon, and the US Army. Over the course of his work, Charles has authored numerous books such as, “Building Brand Communities: How Organizations Succeed by Creating Belonging,” “Storytelling for Leadership: Creating Authentic Connections” and the book that we wanted to chat to Charles about, “The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging.” Charles sat down with us to discuss the consequences of the epidemic of loneliness in America, and how you foster a strong community through connection, boundaries, and genuine care.  At a time when only 15% of workers are engaged at work, and layoffs are sweeping across industries, it's more important than ever to create strong communities within the workspace.  So, with that…let's bring it in!

Mężczyźni i kobiety mają inne motywacje do wolontariatu (mężczyźni chcą działać z innymi, natomiast kobiety, by pomagać innym). Granice dookoła społeczności nie są po to, by trzymać inne osoby z dala od społeczności, a po to, by osoby w społeczności czuły się bezpiecznie. In coaching, especially, there is a high level of independence and self-direction so community can end up secondary to other business aspects. But connection and community are integral parts to your business success. They can go a long way to relieving the pressure you may feel to do everything alone, to figure everything out yourself. That powerful support system cannot be overemphasized. We all need one another. For this episode, which is Part 4 of my 6-week series: “The Big Whys”, I asked four members of The Coaching Collective for their thoughts on community and support. We talk about what makes a community the right fit for each of us since it is definitely not one-size-fits-all. As we talk, we also give you a taste of what The Coaching Collective community is like. True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.” ― Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone “Belonging is the opposite of loneliness. It's a feeling of home, of “I can exhale here and be fully myself with no judgment or insecurity.” Belonging is about shared values and responsibility, and the desire to participate in making your community better. While you build your business, creating connections and community is an integral part of success. Community is two-fold: connections with your clients and connections for your business. He’s an executive consultant who works with leaders in tech, finance, media, government and social change organizations. He lectures and leads workshops across the country, and is a regular guest lecturer at the Yale School of Management and Yale Leadership Institute. They’re often designed and cultivated with purpose and intention. Today’s guest has identified seven time-tested principles for growing enduring, effective and connected communities. These communities could be small, like your immediate family, or they can be larger, like a thriving yoga studio or a church with a congregation 10,000 strong. We live a hurried, jam-packed life. The days and months fly by in a flurry of routines and commitments. We're constantly in motion with a never-ending onslaught of distractions to occupy our minds and hearts. Tuning into ourselves has become nearly impossible. But in my experience, the only way to live an awakened, authentic life is to find space for reflection and time to tune in. We need to come home to ourselves and take ourselves off autopilot. With love, compassion and zero judgement, we need to wake ourselves up. We long to belong. The desire to be a part of a community is a fundamental human yearning, yet broad swaths of Americans have never felt more isolated. In fact, four out of ten report regularly feeling lonely, and very few have more than two people they consider confidants. Why is this happening? What can we do about it? Is there an opportunity for businesses and organizations to fill the void? And if so, how do we design for belonging in brand communities? Today, Jeffrey takes a deep dive into the concept of belonging with executive consultant Charles Vogl, author of The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging. Charles describes his personal feelings around being an outsider and discusses the top three trends contributing to the loneliness epidemic in the US. He shares his experience at Yale Divinity School, explaining the pervasive ‘crisis of belonging’ on campus and how that phenomenon informs his current work. Charles also offers his definition of community as shared mutual concern and discusses how brands might foster genuine connection among a customer base. Jeffrey asks why leaders and event planners miss the mark, and Charles uncovers the necessity of facilitating shared experiences and investing in the growth of diverse groups. Today, Jeffrey explores the creative process with Srinivas Rao, the founder and host of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast and author of the recently released Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake, and Marty Neumeier, Director of CEO Branding at Liquid Agency and author of several books, including the forthcoming business thriller SCRAMBLE: How Agile Strategy Can Build Epic Brands in Record Time. Srinivas and Marty explain how they make decisions about which projects to take on, discussing the tension between what they have been called to create and market demands. They address the significance of ongoing reflection and self-awareness in carving a path of personal and professional mastery and offer insight around putting your imprint or signature on any project you take on, learning best practices—and then challenging them. Srinivas and Marty also describe how they measure the value of their own work, seeking self-mastery rather than obsessing over marketing metrics. Jeffrey asks them how they work through doubt in the writing process, what surprised them in the creation of their latest works, and how they foster openness in creative collaboration. Listen in for advice on leveraging a support system to navigate crises and learn how to design a fulfilling life and business with an eye to creative mastery and meaning. While a grad student at Yale, Charles Vogl organized a dinner series. Using principles distilled from 3,000 years of spiritual traditions, he created a community connecting himself and others. (Some of the) Seven Principles of Belonging: To craft our communities, Vogl proposes we welcome new members through some type of initiation. He also tells us how to implement rituals (formal and informal) and create "temples" or sacred spaces for community gatherings and ceremonies. Borrowing a term from C.S. Lewis, he speaks of "Inner Rings," the most complex concept in his book. Inner rings can be the mark of a mature community. They are made up of experienced, wise people who teach and mentor newer members. No Magic Formula: We should not feel overwhelmed trying to apply all seven principles of belonging. Instead, by using even one or two principles of belonging, we can strengthen a community. According to Vogl, the key to success (and a nice place to begin) is making sure the important people in our life know we care about them.
