Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Since embarking on a solo career in 1999, John has recorded seven solo albums: Phunk Shui, 100 Miles of Life, Mississippi Mile, The Bluesville Sessions, Good Road To Follow, Arkansas and most recently Live from Nashville with the Good Road Band. In addition, his 2017 autobiography “Change of Season” released by St. Martin's press became an Amazon best seller. This year John and his wife Aimee have partnered with the streaming broadcast service NugsTV and co-producer Drive Entertainment Group to create a virtual celebration of stories and songs called “OATES SONG FEST 7908“. Inspired by a live series of shows that they created in 2010 at the historic Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, CO. “OATES SONG FEST 7908” will be a free streaming concert with all donations and proceeds going to FEEDINGAMERICA.ORG. The broadcast will feature an all-star roster of artists all of whom have volunteered their songs and performances to help families without food across the nation. “ My wife Aimee and I are committed to Feeding America's mission to feed America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage us all in the fight to end hunger. In a country like ours…no family should have to go without food.” John continues to tour the world with Daryl Hall, and perform solo as both a musician and public speaker. He also produces, collaborates and develops new artists and has recently completed a series of songs for the upcoming feature film “Gringa” to be released soon. John and his wife Aimee reside in Nashville, Tennessee and Aspen Colorado.

We took the show on the road for Food & Wine's Classic in Aspen, CO at the Wheeler Opera House. Then Associate Food Editorial Director Chandra Ram joins the conversation to talk about what she's seen in home cooking trends, from translating restaurant-level experiences into a recipe and the lasting change Covid has made in home cooking. Then we talk Southern food with Chef Tiffany Derry of Southern Table and Roots Chicken Shack in Texas. She looks at her relationship to Southern cuisine and how important it is to represent her roots authentically and showcased with a spin. Aspen Extreme, the American drama film inspired by writer-director Patrick Hasburgh's early ski days, turns 30-years-old on January 23, 2023! Apparently 30 is the pearl anniversary?! Released in January 1993, this ski film re-directed the trend of slap stick comedy ski movies of the 1980s and early 1990s. Sure, the story is familiar, two friends head west in search of a better life and lots of distractions get in the way of them achieving their dreams. A well-worn path, for sure, but the amazing ski sequences (frozen waterfall?!), throwback gear and likable characters and familiar settings make the movie a cult classic for many skiers. Fun fact, the movie is viewed annually every November at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen. In 2021, Ski Magazine published a reflective interview with writer-director, in which Patrick Hasburgh shared lesser known facts about the making of the movie. The most profound; he had an entirely different movie in mind! Beware the cutting room floor. John Oates is one half of the best-selling duo of all time, Hall & Oates, as well as an accomplished solo artist. Singing from the time he could talk and playing the guitar since the age of five, John Oates was destined to be a musician. Born in New York City, his family moved to a small town outside of Philadelphia, PA in the early 1950s, a move that would change the course of his life. (http://bettereachday.me/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/download-2.jpg) Soaking up the sounds of the 60s, John was influenced by the nascent folk scene, bluegrass, delta blues, and ragtime guitar styles, while also immersing himself in R&B legends such as Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. One of his biggest mentors was his guitar teacher Jerry Ricks, who had spent time on the road with Mississippi John Hurt and Son House, and introduced John to the music of Doc Watson and Reverend Gary Davis, passing down their signature finger and flatpicking styles. John Oates met Daryl Hall while attending Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. The two began collaborating and playing music together, marking the beginning of their historic partnership. It's a brand new edition of The Dana Gould Hour Podcast. I like to think of the show as an audio Pop Tart, you NEVER quite now when it's going to pop up, but in the interest of some sort of regularity, and with my awareness that nature abhors a vacuum and that I, like many others, NEED a deadline now and again, we are trying, trying, trying to get the shows out on the first or second of every month. Is the world throwing up roadblocks to make that difficult? YES. The good news is, these roadblocks are sort of cool. For example, for the past year I've been working on a proposed television show for IFC called Stan Against Evil. It is, for lack of a better term, a cross between The X-Files and All In The Family, and I am happy to announce that it just got picked up and will be on your televisions this fall. But yeah, this fall. Gee, that's kind of soon and we still have to do… EVERYTHING. BUT we're going to do our best to get everything for the TV show and the podcast done on time. The good news is this, me and spare time are a terrible combination, so hopefully this will all work out for the best. In the meantime, you have amazing episode right in front of you. The estimable Greg Proops, he of the Smartest Man In The World Podcast is here and his new book, The Smartest Book In The World. You can follow him at @gregproops Also, the creator of one of my favorite podcasts – Ken Reid, he of TV Guidance Counselor fame is here. Follow him on Twitter @KennethWReid. I will say, although we look nothing alike, lucky for Ken, all of our other similarities are striking to the point of creepy, and you can actually here me getting increasingly spooked by them as the interview progresses. Me? I will be in Philadelphia, Pa at Helium on March 3, 4 & 5th 2016 and at The Wheeler Opera House in Aspen on March 11th 2016. Then I will return to one of my favorite places in the whole wide country, Portland, Oregon to play the Helium THERE on March 24th, 25th and 26th 2016. So, lots of places to see me do my clown act. We did it. It's the first episode of The Dana Gould Hour podcast for 2016 and we juuuust missed January but when I tell you I had homework this month, I had homework. But everything's getting turned in on time and hopefully, we'll have some cool stuff to announce in the not too distant future. Lots of stuff coming up this year including my new special and album, tentatively entitled Mighty Mouth. More about that in the not-too-distant future, where, as Elvis Costello sang, everything will be free. This is kind of a special episode. I saw Star Wars and had very mixed emotions about it. Nothing to do with the movie, but my reaction to it was somewhat strange, and so I have, quite bluntly, my two closest friends in the word on to talk about it -- Ken Daly and Rob Cohen. But, since we know each other SO well I was afraid the conversation would devolve into a series of grunts and eye-rolls, we brought in a ringer, comedian Dan Telfer, who's CD Ocean Of Panic, you can buy. Dan is a Star Wars-knowin' motherfucker and it's a deep dish conversation that goes to some surprising places and I think you'll enjoy it. Also, the always hilarious and entertaining April Richardson is here (@APEY) and her partner in crime and comedy, life and love (but not really) Chris Fairbanks, (@ChrisFairbanks).And as for ME? The movie Southbound hits theaters and I believe VOD in Feb. 5th. Called "A cinematic miracle" by Roger Ebert.com, Southbound a is terrific little horror movie if you like that sort of thing, so go git it. Feb 18, 19 and 20th, 2016 I will be at The Comedy Bar in Toronto, Ontario. I will be at The Wheeler Opera House in Aspen on March 11, 2016 and Helium in Portland, Oregon, land of food trucks, on March 24, 25 and 26th, 2016. Details and ticket links on the live appearance page at http://DanaGould.com
The Ladder, Ladder Tour programme and House of Blues DVD After the review of The Ladder last week from Mark Anthony K, I thought I would find out a bit more about this time when Billy Sherwood was writing, recording and performing with the band. So I have looked at Jon Kirkham's 'Time and a Word - The Yes Interviews' book and a YouTube video of a concert fro the US Ladder Tour. What did Billy Sherwood think of The Ladder? What can we learn about Sherwood's live performances from this YouTube video? How will Billy step into Chris' shoes? Also this week, I received the press release about the AndersonPonty Band's new album and DVD. Jon Anderson and Jean Luc Ponty I read the whole press release in the episode but here's an extract: One of the most eagerly awaited releases of 2015 by the AndersonPonty Band, featuring music icons Jon Anderson and Jean Luc Ponty, is scheduled to hit the streets early Fall 2015! “Better Late Than Never” is the new album taken from a live performance, and enhanced with innovative production. The package includes a bonus DVD featuring outstanding performances by the band captured in September 2014 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado. The AndersonPonty Band has created some breathtaking new musical compositions. “Better Late Than Never” also showcases rearrangements of classic YES hits like “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”, “Roundabout” and “Wonderous Stories”, as well as some of Jean Luc Ponty's beloved compositions, with Jon's lyrical vocals and melodies enhancing the music and creating a very special and unique sound such as “Infinite Mirage” a new song incorporating Jean Luc's classic tune “Mirage”. Welcome to Valley Roundup, a review of the top news stories in the valley in the past week Glenwood Springs has two new council members. It looks like the Thompson Divide will be safe from oil and gas drilling. But, what about other areas and how do residents there feel about that sort of activity in their backyards? There’s movement and millions of dollars in play in getting a base village built at the base of Snowmass ski area. Meanwhile, a new executive director has been hired at the Wheeler Opera House. And, an Aspen City Council candidate is being scrutinized for something he did 10 years ago. Joining me this week are Curtis Wackerle, editor of the Aspen Daily News, Jill Bethard, editor of the Snowmass Sun, Randy Essex, editor of the Glenwood Post Independent and Michael Miracle, editor of Aspen Sojourner magazine. Welcome to Valley Roundup, a review of the top news stories in the valley in the past week. The Aspen City Council this week chose a brewery/business incubator/TV station to be the new tenant at the old art museum. The long dormant Buffalo Valley property outside of Glenwood Springs looks like it will become an apartment complex. A new aerial fire center is coming to the Rifle airport. And the citizens of that town may just get a dose of fluoride in their water. Aspen’s elected officials made development a bit stricter in the land use code but a citizen referendum may make it null and void. Should there be dams over 100 feet tall built at the headwaters of Castle and Maroon creeks in order to preserve our water resources? Meanwhile, plans are in the works to expand the Wheeler Opera House with a theater next door. And the top local guy in charge of the company developing Snowmass Village has been replaced by the parent firm in New York. Joining me this week are Curtis Wackerle, editor of the Aspen Daily News, Andy Stone, columnist and former editor of the Aspen Times and Randy Essex, editor of the Glenwood Post Independent. Ophira Eisenberg is one of the most lovable human beings and powerful performers I have ever met in all my years in entertainment. She is the darling of NPR, being heavily involved in their successful story telling series The Moth and she also hosts the weekly NPR game show Ask Me Anything. Because of these sterling credits I had expected her to be more of a story based performer, but even though her personal stories do pop up in her live performances I was blown away by her stand up comedy skills and how hard she throws down her comedy thunderbolts. I first met Ophira briefly last summer in Amsterdam when I finished my week at Toomler and she was just arriving to do hers. Even slightly jet lagged her ebullient personality shined brightly and I liked her instantly. This past weekend we were both doing the Aspen Laff Festival in Aspen, Colorado. There were brilliant comedians galore and the camaraderie was tight with all of us watching each other's sets and enjoying our time together performing at the Wheeler Opera House. I was happy to get to know Ophira and to laugh at her battle tested tales of a life fully lived. She is originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada but now makes her home in New York City. She is someone I would love to do anything with, be it touring together, working together on a project or just hanging out playing Scrabble. She has a quick wit that is always ready to stab you with a punchline and an easy infectious laugh that is as pleasing as it is calming. If you are unaware of her presence on this earth, after listening to this conversation you will like her as much as I do and that is why it is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Ophira Eisenberg! Intro song: Cutting Room (Hot Pants) – Oceanliners Stand-up clip 1 & 2: Bangs – Ophira Eisenberg Stand-up clip 3: As is – Ophira Eisenberg End song: Leaving on a Jetplane – Peter, Paul and Mary Recorded in Aspen, Colorado. On Episode 49 of the Enormocast, we rebroadcast audio from the 5point Aspen event from Feb 2013. During that event, I hosted Alex Honnold and Michael and Hayden Kennedy in front of a capacity crowd at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen. Honnold is conspicuously low key, Hayden is a smartass, and Michael drops wisdom … Continue reading "Episode 49: On Stage with Honnold and Kennedy²."
