On this weeks Podcast, Ian and Tom are joined by Mr #footywatch, Andy Stone and Paul Jenkins Print Sports Editor at Reach newspapers. Andy Stone described his positive experience at Welton Rovers, highlighting the club's resilience and the contributions of long-time volunteers, whilst Paul reflects on the strong showing this season from North Somerset sides, Clevedon Town and Portishead. Andy highlights his #NonLeagueVolunteersDay initiative, urging listeners to celebrate their Clubs volunteers on February 8th.
This week on One For The Road i am joined by Andy Stone. After an early ADHD diagnosis in his teens Andy struggled greatly through 2 school expulsions and thus had an early introduction to drugs and alcohol. Through his 20's and early 30's unable to hold down a long-term job or to succeed in the classroom the shame of failure and the guilt of under achieving caused prolonged bouts of victim mindset and poor mental health. Being unable to cope Andy sought help from both private and NHS mental health workers and was prescribed Ritalin, Valium and SSRI's in conjunction with an ever increasing drinking tolerance and cocaine habit. Until, at the age of 34, Andy's health reached the point that serious steps needed to be taken! Once through residential rehab and into the fellowships of AA, NA and OA Andy was then able to make a drastic recovery! On his new trajectory not only has Andy been able to educate himself as to the reasons why his neurodiversity caused him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but to utilize that same condition to propel him into the record books. Andy has elevated his health and fitness to the level of setting a Guinness World Record in endurance triathlons, swim with 23 species of shark without a cage and he now training to swim the English Channel later this year with plans to go on and become the first person to ‘officially' swim the Atlantic! With a documentary of his story due out later this year, a budding career in pro speaking and mentoring neurodiverse teens in alternative education Andy is out help others to educate themselves so as no to fall into the same traps he did.If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. In a dramatic turn of events, the Kansas Reflector, a news affiliate of the non-profit States Newsroom, found itself at the center of a contentious battle with Facebook. Sherman Smith, the Editor-in-Chief of the Kansas Reflector, revealed the unfolding saga during an exclusive interview with Mike Blinder, Publisher of E&P Magazine. The saga began when Facebook rejected an editorial titled "When Facebook Fails, Local Media Matters Even More For Our Planet's Future," authored by Dave Kendall and published on the Kansas Reflector's website. The piece highlighted Facebook's rejection of Kendall's documentary on climate change as too divisive, emphasizing the importance of local media in disseminating crucial information. Shortly after attempting to share the editorial on Facebook, the Kansas Reflector faced a startling development. Facebook not only rejected the post but proceeded to remove all past posts linking to the Reflector's website. The platform deemed the Kansas Reflector a cybersecurity threat and contacted every individual who had interacted with the Kansas Reflector's page over the past four years, sending notifications labeling the site as “questionable,” prompting widespread confusion and concern among followers. Smith recounted a conversation with Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone, who acknowledged the platform's error in blocking the Kansas Reflector's posts. However, Stone's apology, delivered via Twitter instead of Facebook's own channels, raised eyebrows and underscored the lack of direct communication from the social media giant. Smith pressed Stone for further clarification on Facebook's actions and the potential implications for media outlets. Stone's response left Smith with lingering concerns about Facebook's accountability and transparency, particularly regarding its content moderation policies and the impact on journalistic integrity. The exchange highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of Facebook's role in shaping public discourse and its responsibility to uphold press freedom. Smith emphasized to Stone the widespread impact of Facebook's actions, reminding him that individuals who had interacted with the Kansas Reflector's page were told that Facebook deems their site as questionable. Smith highlighted the detrimental effect this had on the publication's reputation and audience trust. Despite raising these concerns, Stone expressed his inability to rectify the situation beyond his initial apology on X, leaving Smith and the Kansas Reflector team frustrated with the lack of concrete action or recourse. This exchange underscored the broader implications of Facebook's content moderation decisions and the challenges faced by media organizations in navigating such platforms while maintaining journalistic integrity. As the situation continues to unfold, Smith remains committed to keeping the public informed and holding Facebook accountable. He underscores the importance of transparency and urges Facebook to provide a credible explanation for its actions. The Kansas Reflector's battle with Facebook underscores the challenges facing media organizations in the digital age and raises critical questions about the power wielded by tech giants over the dissemination of news and information. As the story continues to evolve, it serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing struggle to preserve press freedom and protect the public's right to access information.

The owner, Jack Sweeney, announced the arrival of the account on Threads with its first post last week, marking a fresh start for the dedicated followers of Elon Musk's travels. Threads, which was launched on Wednesday as an offshoot of Instagram, offers users the ability to post text content. The app has already gained significant traction, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reporting 70 million new sign-ups in just a few days. However, legal concerns have arisen as an attorney representing Musk-owned Twitter has suggested the possibility of taking legal action against Threads, alleging the unauthorized use of Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property. In response to the accusations made by Musk's attorney, Meta officials have denied any wrongdoing, with Andy Stone, the communications director, stating that none of the Threads engineering team members are former Twitter employees. The controversy surrounding Threads highlights the intense competition and legal battles among social media platforms, as they vie for users and seek to protect their intellectual property rights. The individual behind the suspended Twitter account, Jack Sweeney, rose to prominence for publicly sharing transponder information from Elon Musk's private plane, disclosing its take-off and landing locations. Initially, Musk had allowed the account to remain on Twitter, citing the importance of free speech. However, he later reversed his decision and suspended the account, claiming it violated physical safety concerns. Sweeney then returned to Twitter with a new account named ElonJet but Delayed, which now provides information on Musk's plane on a 24-hour delay. In addition to Twitter, Sweeney maintains similar accounts on other social media platforms, including Instagram and Bluesky, where he tracks planes used by notable figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, former President Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Jeff Bezos, Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift. Reference article: https://www.npr.org/2023/07/09/1186680246/elon-musk-private-jet-twitter-threads
In a development that intensifies the battle in the social media realm, Twitter has hinted at legal action against Meta, previously Facebook, over its new text-based application, Threads. Twitter alleges that Meta has unlawfully utilized its trade secrets and intellectual property in the creation of Threads, which amassed tens of millions of users within a week of its launch. The new app, billed as a text-based version of Instagram, positions itself as a direct competitor to Elon Musk's social media platform, and its debut appears to be stirring controversy. The legal threat came to light on Wednesday in a letter addressed to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta. The letter, written by Alex Spiro, a lawyer representing Twitter, accuses Meta of recruiting former Twitter employees to develop a "copycat" app. The Associated Press reached out to Spiro on Thursday for additional details on the potential lawsuit but received a rudimentary, automated response from Twitter. The company's standard procedure when journalists seek comments. The development marks an escalation of tensions between the two social media powerhouses. Twitter's challenge comes after the introduction of Threads on Wednesday, an app that is rapidly attracting users dissatisfied with recent changes to Twitter. Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter last year for a staggering $44 billion, has made significant modifications to the platform that have been broadly unpopular among the user community. Threads' development team is said to be devoid of former Twitter employees, a point Meta spokesperson, Andy Stone, emphasized in a Thursday post on Threads. “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that's just not a thing,” Stone wrote.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Did you know there's 2 Christmas carols titled "All I Want for Christmas Is You"? The infamous one is 1994's by Mariah Carey, but there's another one overlooked from 1989. Andy Stone sued infringement because of that June-November 2022, wishing more recognition for his band Vince Vance & The Valiants. A new law that would give news organisations more power to negotiate fees for content shared on facebook has been proposed in America. In a throwback to Facebook's stoush with Australia over similar laws in 2021, Meta has threatened to spokesperson Andy Stone said the company would remove US news content from the platform if the legislation goes ahead. In Australia the tactic led to significant backlash and was ultimately unsuccesful. Both Facebook and Google made agreements with Australian news outlets to pay for content. Broadcasting minister Willie Jackson said in a statement on Sunday said the New Zealand government was considering introducing similar legislation, modelled on the Australian and Canadian models. Technology writer and correspondent Rory Cellan spoke to Mani Dunlop.

Zoom crolla in Borsa. SHOW NOTESStanford's Evelyn Douek and Alex Stamos weigh in on the latest online trust and safety news and developments:An article with bombshell allegations against Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, appears to be based on forgeries, but the news outlet continues to stand by the reporting and now claims a technical expert at the publication was hacked. - Aditi Agrawal/ newslaundry, OpIndiaMore: Last week, an article was published by The Wire, a nonprofit Indian digital news organization, claiming an internal Instagram report revealed an official in charge of social media for India's ruling party, the BJP, had special privileges to report pieces of content to Instagram and have them taken down automatically.Meta spokesperson Andy Stone denied the report saying that that was not how the XCheck program worked, and that the “the underlying documentation appears to be fabricated.”But Wait, There's More: The next day, The Wire published a new article claiming to have an email in which Meta's Stone asked employees how the document leaked.Meta CISO Guy Rosen denied the allegations and explained how he determined the evidence and email were forgeries. Then: This weekend, The Wire released another story standing by their reporting with evidence that the internal email and report URL were real. The story included a video explanation of their technical analysis.Meta's Rosen responded debunking new claims, and other experts (including Alex) pointed out flaws with purported technical evidence that the internal emails were real. We're Still Not Done: Meta released an updated blog post debunking the purported internal system shown in The Wire's video as an external account created after the story was reported. The Wire responded in a statement saying that the reason why Meta keeps denying their reporting is to try and get them to publish more information that will reveal their sources but they “are not prepared to play this game any further.” The statement was later edited to delete the description of a “personal” relationship with a source.Got All That? Here's Some Context: India is pushing ahead with legislation that would create a government-appointed panel to review user complaints about social media content moderation decisions. - Megha Mandavia/ The Wall Street JournalMeta officials are also reported to leniently apply policies, such as those barring hate speech, for the Indian ruling party. Newley Purnell, Jeff Horwitz/ The Wall Street JournalYe, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has reached an agreement to buy the conservative social media platform Parler. The move marks a growing trend of billionaires buying social media companies when their posts are moderated. - Ryan Browne/ CNBC, Marlene Lenthang/ NBC News, Bobby Allyn/ NPR, Kelly Hooper/ PoliticoThe Katmai National Park and Preserve's Fat Bear Week bracket voting tournament was marred by an attempt to artificially inflate votes for 435 Holly over Bear 747 in the semifinal round. Contact sports often look towards grappling sports for help in preparing athletes for contact. While there is much to be learned from grappling, there are also key differences as well. This is true when taking ideas from any sport to another, and a lesson Ollie Richardson learned first hand working in elite rugby and MMA. On this week's podcast he shares his system for contact preparation, how it came about, and how to best adapt ideas from other sports. For more information on this topic, read the complete show notes at: https://www.hmmrmedia.com/2022/04/hmmr-podcast-episode-271-tackling-and-grappling-with-ollie-richardson/ » Support the show: join HMMR PLUS to get full access to our coaching resources. More notes: This episode is brought to you by HMMR Plus. Become a member for full access to our videos, articles, and podcast archives. This month's site theme is preparing for contact, so keep an eye out for more on the topic in the coming weeks. You can find more information about training for field sports and contact sports here. To learn more from Richardson, you can follow him on Twitter (@Fighterstrength) and Instagram (@OllieRichardson). For more on the topic of contact preparation, listen to our last episode with USA Football's Andy Ryland. Also recently we discussed preparation for boxing with Duncan Ogilvie. Life hasn't been easy for Andy Stone. As someone who struggled with addictions, he knew that a big part of his future success of living without drugs or alcohol, he needed to distract himself with something that would challenge him and also keep him on a path to good health. And so the ‘crazy' idea of completing 70 Ironman 70.3 in 70 days was born.To put it in context, an Ironman comprises 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile cycle ending with a 13.1 mile run. Over 70 days and starting on Monday 4th April, Andy will: 84 miles of swimming (equivalent to 4x the English Channel) 3,920 miles of cycling (equivalent to cycling from Land's End to John O'Graots 4.4 times!) 917 miles of running (equivalent to running from London to Edinburgh 2.3 times!) This huge physical and mental endurance challenge that will see him swim, ride and run 5000miles in 70 days, the distance from London to China! Is Andy insane? Yes… but in a healthy way. He's using this epic world record attempt to build a supportive team around him and also build back his own inner support systems. Having previously batted with mental health as well as his alcohol addictions, this challenge means more to him than the potential of a world record. As a PADI scuba diving instructor, Andy has a huge love of the ocean but has seen first-hand the impact that humans and over fishing is having on our marine life. That's why through this challenge he's raising money for ocean conservation charities the Blue Marine Foundation and the Shark Trust. This isn't the first challenge Andy's taken on. Earlier this year Andy completed 17 consecutive sprint triathlons in 17 days, raising £1,300 for the Stroke Association in the process.
In sports like rugby and American football there is the contact paradox. Players are bigger and collision forces continue to increase. However the amount contact allowed in training continues to decrease. So how do we prepare for something we cannot train much? Coach Andy Ryland has a few ideas. On this week's podcast he discusses the skills involved in contact, and how to best physically prepare for them off the field. For more information on this topic, read the complete show notes at: https://www.hmmrmedia.com/2022/04/hmmr-podcast-episode-270-prepare-for-contact-with-andy-ryland/ » Support the show: join HMMR PLUS to get full access to our coaching resources. You can learn more about USA Football's courses and certifications on a variety of topics, including contact, on their website. One of Ryland's tackling presentations is also up on YouTube. We referenced the 2014 video posted by the Seattle Seahawks about their approach to tackling which was heavily influence by rugby and sparked a revolution in how coaches think about tackling. This week, Hussein and Phoebe are joined by tech writer and journalist Chris Stokel Walker (@stokel), the author of Youtubers : How YouTube Shook Up TV and Created a New Generation of Stars and TikTok Boom: China, the US and the Superpower Race for Social Media. We talk about what a "Platform" actually is, at a time when Facebook is under heavy criticism for its scale-chasing practices, and whether rival platforms like TikTok are being forced to pursue the same growth model, as well as whether Platforms can ever be meaningfully regulated or treated like a public-service utility. We also talk about Facebook's PR Guy, Andy Stone, whose strategy largely seems to amount to: Get mad online but actually emphasise that you are, indeed, laughing. Does this indicate Facebook going off the rails? Or do they just realise that they can do this now and get away with it? Anyway, we conclude, as always, that this is Nick Clegg's fault. The Facebook whistleblower who released tens of thousands of pages of internal research and documents indicating the company was aware of various problems caused by its apps, including Instagram's potential "toxic" effect on teen girls, called on Congress to take action against the social media platform in testimony before a Senate subcommittee Tuesday.Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old former Facebook product manager who worked on civic integrity issues at the company, faced questions from a Commerce subcommittee about what Facebook-owned Instagram knew about its effects on young users, among other issues."I am here today because I believe that Facebook's products harm children, stoke division, and weaken our democracy," she said during her opening remarks. "The company's leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer but won't make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people. Congressional action is needed. They won't solve this crisis without your help."She emphasized that she came forward "at great personal risk" because she believes "we still have time to act. But we must act now."Urging Congress to take actionHaugen's identity as the Facebook whistleblower was revealed on "60 Minutes" Sunday night. She previously shared a series of documents with regulators and the Wall Street Journal, which published a multi-part investigation showing that Facebook was aware of problems with its apps, including the negative effects of misinformation and the harm caused by Instagram, especially to young girls."When we realized tobacco companies were hiding the harms it caused, the government took action," she said in her opening remarks. "When we figured out cars were safer with seat belts, the government took action. And today, the government is taking action against companies that hid evidence on opioids. I implore you to do the same here."Following the hearing, Facebook issued a statement attempting to discredit Haugen. "Today, a Senate Commerce subcommittee held a hearing with a former product manager at Facebook who worked for the company for less than two years, had no direct reports, never attended a decision-point meeting with C-level executives — and testified more than six times to not working on the subject matter in question," the statement, tweeted by spokesperson Andy Stone, read. "We don't agree with her characterization of the many issues she testified about. Despite all this, we agree on one thing; it's time to begin to create standard rules for the internet."Facebook is no stranger to scandals, and it's not the first time the company has been the subject of Congressional hearings. Nor is it the first time Facebook's public image has been shaken by a whistleblower. But Haugen's documents and upcoming testimony come amid broader scrutiny of Facebook's power and data privacy practices, and have already spurred bipartisan criticism of the company's influence on children. It remains to be seen, however, if it will create momentum for any meaningful regulation. From outage to outrageThe testimony came after a tumultuous day for the company. Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went down for about six hours on Monday. In her testimony, Haugen said, "Yesterday, we saw Facebook get taken off the internet. I don't know why it went down, but I know that for more than 5 hours Facebook wasn't used to deepen divides, destabilize democracies, and make young girls and women feel bad about their bodies."She added: "It also means that millions of small businesses weren't able to reach potential customers and countless photos of new babies weren't joyously celebrated by family and friends around the world. I believe in the potential of Facebook. We can have social media we enjoy, that connects us, without tearing apart our democracy, putting our children in danger and sowing ethnic violence across the world. We can do better."Beyond the documents, there's also the power of Haug...

Another walking morning over the Melbourne Causeway with my wife, Lori, this early day. Less people than I've seen since starting this…also less auto traffic. Could just be what Wednesdays are like. Also saw Manny, the lead singer for @The Spring. He was involved in a conversation on their way up and over the causeway, so I chose not to interrupt…maybe next time!
