How a 10-day experiment in calling God “Waldo” helped me begin a love affair with the God of MY understanding. Other people’s “takes” of their own Alt. Higher Power. Where’s Waldo, and how did I find God in him? In a relentless effort to fill my personal God-Shaped-Hole, I’ve journeyed through a variety of faiths and soul seeking - from Synagogue to Catholic school to an Ashram, Wicca, shamanism, all the way to good ole JC. It wasn’t until I began my journey to a PERSONAL relationship with the unique God of MY understanding (a sort of Ms. Potatohead deity, whom I lovingly call Waldo) that my vision of what is possible really began to expand and my access to uninhibited conversations about “The Divine” began. The interpersonal connections that my playful experiments of “God” have fostered are some of the most real, raw, and magical relationships I’ve ever known... and an unfiltered connection to myself is at the very top of that list! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unboxinggod/support

"Glassing is the art of sitting on a high spot and looking for wildlife." (See what we did there? #opticspun) 3:00 - Quarantine Us: Dishes = low priority; Mud season = meh; Comfy overalls = a harbinger of changing standards of what you will and won't wear in public  10:00 - What is glassing? It's the art of sitting on a high spot and looking for wildlife... OR, hunting with your eyes, not with your feet 10:30 - How do you pick a glassing spot? Let's talk about mule deer for a moment.  12:00 - Wisdom from Brad Brooks of Argali - Mule deer know their home ground... they come back to it time and time again.  13:00 - Look for the best vantage point... look for a high spot without tree obstruction. Spots that overlook basins are winners. 15:00 - Good glassing involves sitting and waiting. Get comfy. 16:30 - Mule deer feed in the morning... then they mosey around. Moving mule deer = easier to spot than bedded deer. Best times to glass are early mornings and 3 p.m. onwards.  20:00 - Improving your eye for game: Investigate every twig/rock... look closely. And if you see nothing, wait and look again. Movement is a giveaway. 24:00 - Glassing is sort of like Where's Waldo... your eye gets sharper at finding the details that clue you into game the more time you spend out there.  28:00 - Go glassing in the off-season. Bring coffee/donuts. Again on being comfy. 32:00 - Optics... they're particularly useful in Western hunting. It's probably not the equipment to skimp on. 34:00 - Jess uses Mavens 35:00 - Optics specs - magnification by objective size. Higher magnification means your field of view gets smaller. 38:00 - Glassing arm exhaustion is a real thing. Prop yourself up on something... Jess has a winning ball cap trick. 39:30 - Binoculars vs. spotting scopes 42:00 - Other good makes: Zeiss, Vortex, Swarovski, Maven 43:00 - The app-adapted scope is a pretty fun luxury 45:30 - Know how to fit your binos to your face and how to adjust them

Safety-behaviors (or compulsions) don't scream and shout, saying "Hey, I'm a compulsions. Stop me." They have something to be gained by not being stopped. "What?" you ask. Well, if you're not identifying them as compulsions, you're not stoppin' 'em; and of youre not stopping them, then your anxiety-related disorder will continue on and on. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chris-leins/support

Often the Christian life can be a bit like Where's Waldo. In moments of doubt and anxiety, or even in moments of joy, we can find it difficult to see Christ in the midst of our life. We need to know where to look and it is The Church which teaches us where to look through the mystery of Her Life in Christ. In the first reading we see the joy of the crippled man after he is healed and we see that it is this witness of joy which convinces the people in the Temple of God's power and wonder. In the Gospel the disciples see Jesus in the Scriptures and in the breaking of the bread. Both of these things are not mere past events, they still happen to us today. For the Readings of the Day, see the USCCB.

So random. First off, it's Thursday night. Second, we came into this podcast with zero plan. Just a need to put something out into the Ethos because we didn't have the chance to record last week. I would love to say we were on our A-game, but that would be a bald-faced dirty ass lie. With Tomas choking on his own saliva almost to death halfway through the podcast (can you find the edit? It's like a weird audio version of Where's Waldo?) and Maigyn just having an off night, it's more like a D-game, but what can we do? However, we bring our stream of consciousness like no other. No need to wonder what our conversations are like, because this is one of them. Only with microphones. And the posting to the internet for the rest of the world to hear if they ever happen down this path. You're welcome.

Remember Where's Waldo? It began as Where's Wally? in 1987, a book of crowd scenes created by a British illustrator named Martin Handford. He started hiding Wally in the middle of these complex backdrops as a way of helping readers focus more closely on his artwork. Children of all ages quickly began spending hours staring at pages trying to find the weird looking guy with the striped shirt, glasses, and the pom-pom hat. There was such a sense of triumph when he was finally found after a diligent search... until the page was turned and a new search began. You might be surprised to know that there is a version of Where's Waldo? happening in our lives right now. We are looking for answers that seem to be harder to find than Waldo ever was. The backdrop of our society is as complex and confusing as it has ever been. How do we make choices day to day? How should we live as the church in our fractured times? Our Waldo is wisdom, and we need it more than we realize. This week, we will continue our study on First Corinthians, A Better Way. We'll discover how the Apostle Paul addresses the divisions in the Corinthian church with a discussion of wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, Paul tells the church that the solution to their problems cannot be seen in the wisdom of the world, but only in the wisdom of God. Paul makes it clear that our "Waldo" can be found. I hope you'll join us this week as we learn what wisdom is and where to find it.

Mark first came to Aaron's notice on the Cartoonist Kayfabe YouTube channel. The hosts Jim Rugg (Street Angel) and Ed Piskor (X-Men Grand Design, Hip-Hop Family Tree) did an episode showcasing picture books that spotlighted Mark's underrated classic, “Who Needs Donuts?” On this episode of Speech Bubble, Mark explains the bizarre story of how the book got its non sequitor title among other unlikely tales from his life as a prolific cartoonist for The Village Voice, The Washington Post and other equally high profile American publications of record, including The New York Times Book Review. In all three of the publications named here, Mark wrote and drew long-running comic strips – the most well-known of which was arguably McDoodle Street, which developed quite a cult following in the pages of The Village Voice among the miscreants living in 1970s New York. He tells Aaron that inspiration for the content of such a thing came on long meandering walks through the city streets at all hours of the night where he would just let his mind wander into all manner of dreamy tangents. Later, in his rent-controlled apartment – where he once heard the music of Kris Kristofferson wafting through the floor boards – he would draw what he saw. What came out was often a Where's Waldo-esque acid trip where every inch of the panels were covered in a warped-ly detailed cityscape with sight gags strewn throughout. Maybe this was at least partially due to the fact that both Mark's parents were gag cartoonists themselves. In fact, growing up he sometimes found himself playing in the backyard with the real Dennis the Menace (son of the strip's creator Hank Ketcham). In addition, to its busy pages, McDoodle Street gained attention for its biting social commentary and satirism. A combination Mark was later asked to repeat when targeting America's seat of power for his Washingtoon Strip in the Washington Post and then his Boox Strip for the New York Times Book Review. Though special in their own right, these two strips never quite captured the imagination like McDoodle St., which ended abruptly, without explanation. Mark offers that explanation here and in the pages of the newly published McDoodle Street collection from The New York Review of Comics and Penguin Random House Canada, which he came to the Toronto Comics Art Festival to promote at the time of this interview.
