On Friday's show: Mayor John Whitmire has announced a new push "to end homelessness." The plan calls for increased local funding and more collaboration between the city and county. Whitmire also wants to make it illegal to sleep in public spaces. We learn what all the plan entails. Also this hour: From a lawsuit over off-duty officers carrying weapons in some area hospitals, to a new baby elephant at the Houston Zoo, our panel of non-experts contemplate The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And Houston native Attica Locke, who's got an extensive resume writing novels and for television, talks about incorporating Houston and East Texas into her writing, including her latest novel, Guide Me Home, the final installment of her Highway 59 trilogy, which centers around a Black Texas Ranger named Darren Mathews. She also discusses what it was like working with her sister, Tembi Locke, in bringing her memoir, From Scratch, to the screen for the Netflix series of the same name.
In every deep relationship, there comes a point where we are asked to give up something of ourselves or change in ways we never anticipated. Who will this make me? What will this love cost? Tembi Locke fell in love with an Italian chef named Saro when she was studying abroad in Italy during college. Their romance was a story for the big screen. (Quite literally. One starring Zoe Saldana.) A rare illness upended it all. Tembi spent ten years as Saro's caregiver before he died. In her grief, Tembi took their young daughter back to Sicily to see what of her husband she could find there—in his culture, in his food, and with his family. In this conversation, Kate and Tembi discuss: becoming the architect of your life the effects of long-term caregiving (both the beauty and the cost) who grief makes us If you liked this episode, you'll also love: Katherine and Jay Wolf on what caregiving costs us Thomas Lynch on how we become who we miss John Swinton on living at the speed of love Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. Back on December 1, 2019, Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed actor Tembi Locke who had just published her memoir, FROM SCRATCH:A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. The daughter of Black student activists in Houston, Locke penned a courageous story of love, family, and healing through the story of the romance between her and her Sicilian husband Saro, and his untimely death. In our interview we discussed how she met her husband while in Italy on a semester abroad from college, his family's opposition to their marriage, and how her Sicilian mother-in-law's love after Saro's death helped her heal. FROM SCRATCH became a New York Times best seller and a limited Netflix series. The series, “From Scratch,” became an instant global hit, spending weeks on Netflix's Top Ten List in over thirty countries around the world and earning six NAACP Image Award nominations. On Thursday's show: After Gov. Greg Abbott and others have called for investigations into alleged irregularities at Harris County polling places, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced she is launching a criminal investigation. We learn the latest and discuss what it all means. Also this hour: While there has been plenty of backlash to recent antisemitic remarks from celebrities, what steps are being taken to address such remarks and incidents here in the Houston area? And what can be done to counter them? Then, after former astronaut and incumbent U.S. Senator Mark Kelly survived a tough re-election challenge, his twin brother, Scott Kelly, talks about spending nearly a full year in space, which he documented in his book, Infinite Wonder. We revisit our 2018 conversation with him. And we hear how a Houstonian's chance encounter in Italy turned into a love story that's now streaming on Netflix. Tembi Locke talks about the story – and the food – that inspired From Scratch, from a 2019 conversation she had with us upon the release of her memoir by the same name.
This week I'm talking to the author and inspiration of From Scratch, Tembi Locke! This was a very special interview to me. First up, Who's on Content?! This Week?! Is Netflix's From Scratch which has been on everyone's tongues and tissues in the past few weeks. The 8 episode limited series depicts the beautiful love story of Tembi Locke and her husband, a Sicilian chef named Saro. It is one the rawest pieces of content EJ has experienced and it was only right that he dissects what makes it so. Next up, EJ chats with Alex Hill of Just Add Hot Sauce about her recent transition to being a fulltime food creator. As a marketer by trade, Alex suffered from imposter syndrome many times where she started and stopped her online career a few times until fully leaning in and betting on herself. Her content celebrates the culture of family and heritage with every post. Interview Highlights: Recognize what drives your passion and lean all the way in! Who's on Content?! This Week?! Netflix's From Scratch has been on everyone's tongues and tissues in the past few weeks. The 8 episode limited series depicts the beautiful love story of Tembi Locke and her husband, a Sicilian chef named Saro. It is one the rawest pieces of content EJ has experienced and it was only right that he dissects what makes it so. Featured Guest: Award Winning Author of In Bibi's Kitchen, Hawa Hassan connects and invites people to eat and learn from her Somalian table. When she launched her hot sauce line for Basbaas Foods, Hassan was just looking for an entry point to start a global conversation around the need for diversification of available foods on grocery shelves that also connected people to the culture and communities of those cuisines. As a proud Somalian, she needed to find ways to diversify the content of our people and the narratives that were being shared about them. Understanding that food is the best cultural gateway that explores the ways in which we are all connected as humans, she's on a mission to continue inspiring others to explore the foods around the world as a way to better connect with communities far and wide. Interview Highlights: It's better to invite people into an idea rather than tell them what to do or how to do it. Keep the community first - community cultivating content will always reign supreme as the community becomes invested in you! Industry disruptors allow for diverse representative storyteller that connects and expands the experience one could have or share. This week's episode is a story of love and how love can change your life. It's a story about marriage, family, health and grief but at its core is love. Love at all costs. Tembi Locke is an actress and an author and now the co-writer and executive producer behind the new Netflix's series, ‘From Scratch', based on Tembi's beautiful and heartbreaking life story which she wrote about in her New York Times best-selling memoir. ‘From Scratch' has been adapted and produced by Reece Witherspoon and stars Zoe Salanda. As an actress Tembi has appeared in TV shows, comedies and films including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Beverly Hills and 90210. But it's her improbable and extraordinary story which has captured attention; meeting and marrying her Sicilian husband Saro, winning over his estranged family who rejected his life choices, including Tembi as a black American, and ultimately caring for Saro as he died. Tembi writes so beautifully in her memoir about her life and the intimacy of witnessing Saro dying and raising a grieving child. Her story is defiant and moving. It's about bringing families together despite their differences, changing your life because of love and the challenges that come with that. It may even change your idea of romance and what it is to love someone. On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we are doubly thrilled to welcome sisters Tembi and Attica Locke about their new Netflix series, From Scratch, which is based on Tembi's New York Times bestselling memoir of the same name. We didn't think our hearts could be any more full after watching this beautiful, epic story of love and loss, but discussing it with Tembi and Attica brought us to even higher emotional highs! We chatted with them about how adapting it for the screen made for a deeper exploration of motherhood and mothering in all its complicated glory; how Tembi bearing witness to her grief allows others to be seen, but also translates the full embodiment of grief for those who haven't walked that path yet; the realistic and mature depiction of love and partnership in the series, going well beyond the “meet and cute” and giving us the sticky middle of a relationship; how Attica's intuition guided her choices for the writers room and the collective sisterhood that brought this book to the screen; what a “from scratch” moment can look like in all of our lives; and the ways Tembi and Attica's astrological signs make them the perfect team!
In honor of Mother's Quest turning 5, all season we've been sharing Throwback Thursday episodes from the archives. I've been excitedly anticipating resharing this episode with you with actress, author of the memoir From Scratch, and now co-creator and executive producer of the Netflix series by the same name, Tembi Locke. Since the limited series release just a few days ago, From Scratch has already climbed to the Top Ten in 74 countries and has captured the hearts of so many. Throughout my day today, I've been alternating between watching the show and relistening to my episode with Tembi, also beautifully dedicated by her sister and show co-creator Attica Locke. The combination of the two has rekindled an appreciation in me for honoring our ancestors, for the power of answering the call of our heroes journey, and of looking for light in the darkness to guide us through challenging times. Tembi says at the beginning of our conversation that she hoped it would be evergreen and we could find new meaning if we returned to it in a different time. That intention came true. This episode is a gift that feels just right for today. Like it did for me, I hope it provides the wisdom, inspiration and light you seek right now. The World is Filled with LightningIn 2019, The New York Times asked Attica Locke what moved her most in a work of literature. Attica's response came back with one word: Wisdom. The New York Times rightly knew who to go to for this question. Attica is a five-time published, New York Times bestselling author. If you've yet to read one of her crime and suspense filled novels but have watched an episode of Empire or Little Fires Everywhere (or her upcoming Netflix Limited Television Series From Scratch produced and written with her sister Tembi Locke), you have had a glimpse into the worlds that Attica creates through the magic of her imagination and her pen. Her office is filled with awards for her creativity. When Attica writes, Hollywood and New York take notice, because something good is about to happen. But when Attica sits down to write, there are no critics in the corner applauding (this is no waking ritual of a 17th Century monarch). No studio executives rushing in to read and then approve the latest edits. It all begins with Attica showing up to face an empty Microsoft Word Doc, a flashing cursor, and an idea. An idea of what could be. Showing up is a recurring theme in Attica's journey as writer and human. The act of being present, taking up space and trying – even in the face of doubt – are essential ingredients for living. She says, “Your ability to then be additive to the lives of others, starts with you being able to show up for yourself.” Before I can give to others, my cup must first be full. In our conversation, Attica and I both show up and struggle together through the most challenging questions of our times as we contemplate what the world is and what it could be: Will this democracy last? Can black people afford forgiveness? Can we defeat the illusions of scarcity that Attica identifies as the central question of crime in her work? Our conversation is funny, sometimes raw and tear filled, but mostly it is the dialogue between two life-long friends who spend an hour together in fellowship as the world around us is filled with lightning. Attica sums it up in the final moments of our conversation, “The thing I care about on planet earth is kindness. Kindness. Kindness. And recognizing peoples' humanity.”Now that, Attica, is wisdom.Attica InformationAttica on IGPatrick InformationPatrick on IGPatrick on LinkedInFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com

Tembi Locke is an actor, an author, a screenwriter, and a producer who really knows how to connect with her audience. Her New York Times bestselling book, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home was Reese Witherspoon's 2019 Book Club pick. Reese loved it so much, she's executive producing the adaptation for a Netflix series where Zoe Saldana will star as Tembi. Tembi's memoir, From Scratch, is a sweeping, autobiographical romance that follows an American woman as she falls in love with a Sicilian man while studying abroad in Italy and then builds a life with him in the United States. When she unexpectedly loses her young Italian chef husband to illness, she's challenged to pull herself through grief so she can raise their adopted daughter as they would have raised her together: with hope, joy, and infinite love. Cooking becomes a way for her to be close to Saro both in Los Angeles and in his mother, Nona's kitchen, and why mourning food (morning with a “u”) offers comfort and sustenance. It's why a bowl of pasta always makes us feel better. Tembi has over sixty film and television credits under her belt as an accomplished actor and is currently recurring on Never Have I Ever, a comedy created by Mindy Kaling. Offscreen, Tembi is a nationally recognized speaker for her keynotes on resilience, loss, and motherhood with her TEDx talk viewed by individuals and nonprofits worldwide.
