In a rerun of an *absolute hit* episode from last holiday season, we're talkin' Thingies with Alison Roman, the woman behind a SLEW of recipes we cook all the dang time. We know you know her, but JIC, she's the author of NYT bestselling—and gifty!—cookbooks Sweet Enough, Nothing Fancy, and Dining In, she doles out the most delightful kitchen content in A Newsletter and on her Home Movies YouTube channel, and she delivers guidance of all kinds on her Solicited Advice podcast. In essence: She's full of thoughts, and we want them all. First things first, what we would bring to a pilot kid-gift swap (thx, Leslie!): Spirograph, Yellow Owl Workshop DIY Pin & Flair Kit, Bastien Contraire Stencil Kit, Majo Ideas Art Pack, and Pop Tubes. Alison's tabletop Thingies include beeswax candles (try Greentree Home Candle—maybe in the sangria color?!), candle holders *in general* (e.g., this Sophie Lou Jacobson one), and interesting serving platters including Bordallo Pinheiro's. For the bod, she loves using Laneige's lip mask as lip balm, and Davines's Vegetarian Miracle Mask for her hair. On the food front, how about chopped fermented chilies—use them to make her Brothy Chickpeas with Calabrian Chili (and/or these chickpeas)—and, for dessert, Kolsvart gummies. Share your Thingies with us at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, and @athingortwohq, or drop them in our Geneva! YAY.
This week, we've got some Carter Family music from Dale Jett, some old-time country from Lulu Belle & Scotty, and some banjo picking from Junie Scruggs – Earl's brother. There's some fine bluegrass in here from Aaron Foster, Jeanette Williams, Roland White, and the Earls Of Leicester, a great band called ‘Sideline', and some straight-ahead picking from Nothing Fancy. The ‘best of bluegrass'.
Scott Lavene is a singer-songwriter from Essex, England. He releases his third record, Disneyland in Dagenham, on May 10th, via Nothing Fancy. He then tours the UK in June. Rich's New Year begins after the Super Bowl. With upcoming trips to warm cities Los Angeles and Miami, he shares his diet & exercise routine. Rich breaks down fundamentals of nutrition that—if followed—will result in satisfying a majority of health goals. Nothing fancy. Just simple and effective. In 2024, Rich isn't even going to a gym but workouts that can be executed any where in the world. Biggest advice: Stay away from sugar and greasy food. Be aware that sugar is trojan horsed into many products consumers wouldn't think. Ask your self: Is this natural or unnatural? Consider our body a biological processor—don't make it complicated for it. Rich's Website

Today is a quick and dirty pep talk on something that has helped me to become a far more precise, intentional and profitable business owner. As someone who got super sidetracked on my way to building a highly successful 7 figure business (that ultimately didn't feel aligned to my values and lifestyle) it's now more important than ever to me that I'm intentional in my decision-making. That doesn't mean everything is always right or that I don't pivot or change what I'm doing. It just means I try to be as intentional as possible when it comes to my business strategy and make data-driven decisions. One small but critical shift has helped me build a more profitable and sustainable business and this is what I'm sharing with you today.LINKS:Download my Metrics Tracker
Alison Roman, the best-selling author of cookbooks such as, “Nothing Fancy,” and, “Dining In,” teaches Stephen how to make a just-sweet-enough tart for dessert. Alison's new book, “Sweet Enough,” is available everywhere now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In Sweet Enough, the New York Times bestselling author of Nothing Fancy offers over 85 rustic and simple yet sublime sweets designed for people who think they don't have the time or skill to pull off dessert. In conversation with Abby Phillip, CNN's senior political correspondent and anchor of “Inside Politics Sunday.” This program was held on March 30, 2023.
Alison Roman is enjoying being an “elder millennial” and not feeling the pressure of being on TikTok or even doing all that much on Instagram, the platform that helped make her reputation (although she did meet her boyfriend when he slid into her DMs). “I do furniture shopping on Instagram,” she says, describing what she calls her fraught relationship with the app. “That's what I use it for.”The queen of viral recipes is no longer as known for #TheCookies or #TheStew as she is for simply being a food and media personality. She has just published her third book, Sweet Enough (already a bestseller), she has a thriving YouTube channel, her A Newsletter boasts more than 220,000 subscribers, and she very almost had a CNN show that ultimately hasn't seen the light of day because of the network's fickle business strategy. But there's also that other thing: the cancellation. In a May 2020 interview with a small newsletter, Alison criticized Marie Kondo and Chrissy Teigen's business empires, which led to critics—and then a Twitter mob—accusing her of anti-Asian racism. Alison apologized and self-criticized, profusely, but she lost her New York Times column and some friends along the way. Three years on, she's feeling a lot better about her career and position, but it still smarts. “To have the entire world, what feels like the entire world, wanting you dead and telling you what a bad person you are and how horrible you are, and just wild stuff—I wouldn't wish that upon anybody.”This conversation is packed with Alison's insight and wit, and a steady dose of self-reflection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. https://anewsletter.alisoneroman.com/ Show notes * Subscribe to A Newsletter on Substack* Find Alison on Instagram, YouTube, and her personal website* Alison's books: Dining In, Nothing Fancy, and, published this week, Sweet Enough* Alison's New York Times column* The milk girl meme mentioned* [02:39] Using Instagram as a tool* [06:32] A writer rather than a creator* [09:23] Trying journalism * [11:08] Starting the newsletter * [17:14] Alison's fraught relationship with social media * [20:54] Reaching “visual success” * [28:00] Becoming a pastry chef * [31:03] Writing tips from Bon Appétit * [37:01] Striving for longevity * [40:16] Sweet Enough * [43:25] The exorcism of writing * [46:48] On speaking out * [49:49] Being canceled in 2020* [54:49] On resilience* [1:03:31] Future AlisonThe Active Voice is a podcast hosted by Hamish McKenzie, featuring weekly conversations with writers about how the internet is affecting the way they live and write. Big bold flavors and a big bold personality — Alison Roman brings it all in this book about “having people over” and not “entertaining,” thank you very much. From one Starstruck favourite to another…Rose Matafeo everyone !! I'm back in old rainy Blighty, and returning - in fine form if I say so myself - to cooking duty! Whilst gazing at the Matafeo powerhouse, I made a lovely slow roast chicken from Alison Roman's book ‘Nothing Fancy' and mum did a Saffy's LA inspired salad - it was perfect and minimal effort. Rose spoke to us about growing up in New Zealand, resenting reggae in her teens and her love of Goat Curry. She also offers up Samoan dishes and her secret to the best fry up. We ranked meats, Rom Coms and fell in love to be honest. Enjoy this episode. Go go go! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Alison Roman is back to talk about her new cookbook, Nothing Fancy, which just came out yesterday. It's as beautiful as her first and filled with recipes developed around the idea of having people over. That's right: not entertaining, just having people over. Abby Hughes - July 22, 2022. Despite opening in June of 2020 — a time that was really hard for bars and clubs — comedy bar Nothing Fancy is thriving. SHOW NOTES:THE STORY:Today's story is written and recorded by Amanda. It is the story of a box, which is 'nothing fancy' on the exterior, but incredibly meaningful inside. We will let you discover what the story is about by listening to this episode. We were once again humbled to receive such a personal and thoroughly touching story for the podcast.DISCUSSION:We mainly discuss what it means to leave something truly valuable behind. Utterly taken by Amanda's description, our recommendation is of a film where something - 'nothing fancy' is passed on in a similarly meaningful way. The film is Cinema Paradiso, a classic which we decided to revisit after recording this story.Thank you, Amanda for sharing this moment with us. The holidays are upon us, which means we're all probably thinking about, talking to, and meeting up with more family members than at any other time in the year. And that's not always easy. “Family by definition is complicated,” says photographer Gillian Laub, whose new book and exhibition called “Family Matters” explores the dynamics within her own tight-knit family, and the political rift they're still trying to mend. On this episode of Next Question with Katie Couric, while Katie takes a short break, special guest host Alison Roman (chef, cookbook author, “Dining In,” “Nothing Fancy”) steps in to talk with Gillian about the awkward intimacy of photographing her family and how the lessons of Gillian's personal story transcend the specifics of her “live out loud” relatives. Katie will return in two weeks. Gillian Laub's photography book “Family Matters” (Aperture) is out now. Her exhibition of the same name is at the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York City through Jan. 10, 2022. Alison Roman is a New York-based cook, writer, and author of the New York Times bestselling “Nothing Fancy” and “Dining In” cookbooks. She is the creator of a bi-weekly YouTube series called Home Movies as well as a weekly newsletter not-so-cleverly titled A Newsletter. Social media is constantly evolving. And keeping up with the trends is challenging for anyone, let alone those of us who actually have a business to run too...For example, recently, Instagram announced that they wanted creators to focus more on reels than images. The meaning of this is simple - videos posts will now receive a MUCH heavier algorithm than image-based ones. When we first heard of this update, we were shocked. Instagram was always, first and foremost, a photo-sharing app, even when it introduced Stories to compete with Snapchat. But now, it feels like the end of an era. We're officially entering the zone where TikTok-style marketing is the cheapest and most powerful tool we can have in our arsenal. But here's the tiny problem: if you're a millennial like us, TikTok probably gives you nightmares.Let's face it, there's a lot to dislike about TikTok - most of it is cringy, confusing, and needlessly shallow. But, we also can't deny that TikTok is the place to be if you want to market smartly, without creating a huge dent in your bank account. So, how can we use TikTok in a way that aligns with our values?Well, that's exactly what we'll be discussing in today's episode! If TikTok feels like a mangled mess, this episode is for you! We discuss how we feel about TikTok, how we're planning on using it intentionally (so no pointing and dancing), why we think it's so addictive, and more! Here's a peek at what else you can expect: What we love and hate about social media in general The terrifying future of huge tech companies deciding how we should market our business Why it's easier than ever to be manipulated by what's trending How to be intentional about using TikTok Why it's important to put your big girl pants on as an entrepreneur (even if that means doing things you dislike Once you're done listening to this episode, find us on Instagram (@heymarvelous) and tell us how you're planning to use TikTok moving forward!Resources: Instagram's New Focus Eleanor Beaton - And She Spoke Catfishing Friends on TikTok Nothing Fancy - Alison Roman ARQ Underwear This week's Joys: Instead of a hustle this week, we're bringing you two joys, one for each of us!Our first joy is a cookbook. ‘Nothing Fancy' by Alison Roman is exactly what it sounds like - a cookbook full of simple recipes that are super delicious! Our second joy is underwear. Well hey there everyone~~ Welcome back to Nothing Fancy. In Nothing Fancy I'll be cooking up some of my favorite recipes and I'll walk you through every step of the way while also talking about some history behind the dish, it's meaning to me, and whatever else I talk about. Today's episode is about a spicy tuna bowl. A quick and super tasty pantry-raid recipe that's a distant cousin of the Hawaiian poke bowl. Tuna, veggies, rice, what's not to love! As you listen along, feel free to pause, rewind, or jump back to an earlier section if you need too. Ingredients 2 5oz. cans chunk tuna 1 tbsp gochujang ½ tbsp soy sauce Around ⅓ cup of mayonnaise 1 tsp ginger paste 2 cups white rice Bag of frozen veggies (this can be sugar snap peas, green beans, a veggie medley, whichever. I like a veggie medley that has peas, green greens, corn, and carrots) 1 tbsp sesame oil or hot chili oil If you want to follow along with me on my food journey, find me on Instagram @AustinEatsATL Follow my website and blog at AustinEatsATL.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/foodwithbenefitspod/support

Ellen and Heidi talk to Mary and Nina. Mary has two established and successful businesses- one in the healing arts and the other teaching people to bake bread. She is grappling whether to just put her focus on the sourdough business, even though she feels the sadness of having to leave the medical practice behind. Nina is a dynamic 18-year-old with lots of ideas and dreams, specifically about teaching writing and/or music. She also wonders about her tendency to start lots of projects and not finish them and asks if it is better to go with her natural multi-tasking tendencies or whether to train herself to do one task at a time to successful completion. We also talk about the documentaries ‘Knock Down the House' and ‘Nothing Fancy' as well as Erin French's new book ‘Finding Freedom'

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. OPENING ILLUSTRATION:A few years ago our family was traveling from Kansas out to Washington DC. We had figured out that if we left after I preached one Sunday that we could make it to… You guessed it, Kentucky to stay for the night. Actually, the plan was to stay in Louisville and travel the rest of the way the next day. So, I booked the hotel on a website that will remain unnamed and we booked it out of Kansas. By the time we got into Louisville, it was midnight… Kansas time… Do you know how wrong it is that Kentucky is on Eastern time when you are driving this way. We pulled into the hotel, I was exhausted, tired as all get out, I woke Jen up, everyone else in the car was asleep. I'd driven like 11 hours and all I wanted was to crash into a comfy bed. I wait in the car with the kids as Jen goes in to get our keys and find out where the room is. that's when I see her come out with one of those looks on her face. you know those looks where you think, I would not want to be the person who put that look on her face. She got in the car and she said, “they don't have a room for us, they gave it away…” I don't think I've ever quite understood the idea of “No Room in the Inn” before that… Have you ever wondered why Mary and Joseph are traveling to a place where they need to find a guest house? It's because there is a census that has been initiated and everyone has to go to their home town-the town is overwhelmed with people-Bethlehem was not a large town-Mary and Joseph have been looking for a place to stay and they can't find anything… They are stuck having their baby in a manger - a space that was designed for animals… But what was that space like? Was Jesus born in a cave? Was he in a barn? Where was He born? [5 Minute History Lesson] It's time for a 5 minute history lesson with KentMost people have a misconception about where Jesus was born. This misconception came from Christmas songs, Greeting cards, and even well meaning pastors. The word in Greek for “guest room” in vs. 7 where it says She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. The word is KatalumaIf Luke had wanted to say Jesus was born in a Motel 6, there were Greek words available to him to use to convey the idea of an inn. And let's honest, would you have been looking to a Motel 6 to give birth in when you likely had family that lived in the town you were in? A kataluma was used to refer to a guest room (which doubled as storage when there were no visitors https://www.ucg.org/the-good-news/was-there-really-no-room-in-the-inn), it would have been off the back of the house. What Luke is telling us is that the guest room was already taken so Mary and Joseph had to give birth in the manger. We all have this picture of the manger being a barn, and some pastors will tell you it was in a barn, but scholars actually think the manger was probably a room off the front of the house. This idea comes from "Justin Martyr in the second century A.D. stated that Jesus' birth took place in a cave close to the village. Over this traditional manger site the emperor Constantine (A.D. 330) and his mother, Helena, constructed the Church of the Nativity" (2005, p. 1669). But Archaeologists have found that, ancient Jewish people had a room in the front of the house that you would walk into first - it was a small long room that they would bring their animals into during the night to protect from theft and to use their body heat to help keep the house warm on cool nights. They would put straw down for these animals. It was a part of the house. What is most likely happening is Jesus was born in this house or possibly this room, swaddled and then placed in the trough of this room, which would have worked nicely for a cradle. He was likely born into the house of a kinsman, a family member who would have felt like it was their duty to care for Mary and Joseph. It is also possible that the placement of them in the manger is due to Mary being pregnant outside of wedlock, although whether they would have known that or not, we don't know. [back to kent]What we do know, is that Mary and Joseph had a place to stay. It's interesting to me that the part of the story we have focused on so much is the fact that there was no room in the Kataluma - I get it, it drives your emotions, you end up thinking, “How could they…” But what we miss is that, while the guest room was full, whoever it was that owned this manger, gave Mary & Joseph what they had. It was warm, dry, the noise would have been dampened by the straw. It was a place where the mess of birth could easily be cleaned out and replaced with new straw. I'm telling you, for Every Christmas of my life I've missed the gift that was given for Jesus because all I saw was what wasn't available to give I know a lot of people who feel like this, like they don't have much to offer Jesus.-People who aren't rich-Don't feel like their gifted at anything - ordinary-don't have influence People who just work normal jobs, have normal families, are normal people. What I love about this story of Christmas is that the miracle was found in the normal Jesus does this all the time-He takes what is normal or weak about us and turns it into His strength -A boy only had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes - Jesus took the normal and fed 5,000-Jesus took a donkey - and rode into Jerusalem like a King-Jesus took Paul in His weakness and said 2 Corinthians 12:9My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. I know you might not feel like much, but you are exactly who God is looking for! 1 Corinthians 1:27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God Chose you! You have something you can offer to GodThe question you have to figure out how to answer is… What is it that I can offer to God? [Part 3]I wanted to give you something practical todayA way for you to Advance the Kingdom by living for God and loving people The 4 P's of Giving a “Nothing Fancy” only “Normal” Gift to God: Open your bibles to Romans 12:1-2Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. A posture you assume ILLUSTARTION:You can now buy devices to help with your posture, to keep your body in the right position to maintain health… I need a device that shocks me when I eat sweets :) Your posture matters, right, we've all seen the elderly gentlemen who's almost bent over and thought about how uncomfortable it would be and felt sorry for him. Paul tells us that our posture matters when we think about our walk with Jesus, he says it this way… Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Offer your bodies as living sacrificesPaul has just got done describing the incalculable mercy of God, and He says - “in view of that mercy” offer your body as a living sacrifice… You know this is a conundrum - most sacrifices died. But Paul is asking us to live our lives in a way where we are living as an eternal offering to God The posture we assume is to live life through the lens that every breath you take is a breath taken FOR God - a living sacrifice. 2. A post Mortem you conduct ILLUSTRATION:Murder mystery shows use the autopsy room as a way to give you tons of information about the episode you are watching in a very succinct way in order to move the mystery forward quickly. It's an ingenious way to tell a story… For our purposes, your post mortem that you need to conduct is about starting to unravel the life of Jesus from the life you've lived… Paul says it this wayDo not conform to the pattern of this world This is huge, it's something I don't think many of us take the time to do… We don't CSI our own thoughts and behaviors to determine if they are something that has been birthed by God or by our cultureBYou'll see, but giving a gift to God, that's acceptable, is about being in His will, and you can't be in His will if you are not in His will… meaning you are operating on a different set of values This means looking at what informs your thinking-are you more informed by a political party than the scripture?-does your view of leadership come from the word of God or the world?-How about your money, your family, parenting, how you pass on spiritual training to your children, sexuality, drinking, lying, etc. The post mortem is about looking at where you come from so you can start going where you want to 3. A position to takeDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I don't mean position like you would think politicallyWhat I mean is that you position yourself under the word of God-that as you allow your thinking to be transformed and your mind renewed by learning to answer the question What is the God way of thinking about this? This means studying God's word-spending time with believers-etc. 4. A path to walk There is this interesting passage in the bible, Acts 16, Paul is planning on going into Asia and he says the Holy Spirit kept him from going there and then he has a vision of a man in Macedonia… It's interesting to me, because Paul was just doing his best to do what he believed God wanted him to do, and God was reaching in to gently direct him - like helping a kid learn to ride a bike, you let them balance but occasionally reach in to correct their balance Paul says if you have done all these things-Assumed a posture of a living sacrifice-Performed a post mortem to understand where you came from-Taken a position of submitting your thinking to God's way of thinking Then…Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. You can walk the path of “trying” for God This is where as you give yourself to God he can take your Normal and turn it into miracles… CLOSING:I used to have this buddy who would always offer to help me with things but would never follow through. It was probably one of the most frustrating things ever. God is not just looking for empty lip service, but he's also not looking for the best, the brightest, the wealthiest… God is simply looking for those who are available and willing… What could happen if you gave God your parenting - and reset your thinking on it? What could happen if you gave God 15 minutes a day in the morning to spend in His word? What could happen if you turned off the radio every time you were driving and prayed the whole time? What if you gave your life to Jesus and found salvation Him? Look, Jesus is looking to take normal and create a miracle, are you ready to give it to Him? Why not spend some time talking online or with your family about what you could start giving to God?
