Mitchell Mesenbrink joins the show to discuss what he's been up to since the NCAA season, why he chose not to compete on this international circuit, and how he's starting to feel the itch to get back on the mat. He shares what his training has been focused on, talks about the non-bonus win at NCAA's over Hepner, and opens up about the role faith plays in his life, describing the "God-shaped hole" he believes everyone has. Mitchell also reflects on the family atmosphere at Penn State, what winning the Hodge Trophy meant to him, the influence of his parents throughout his wrestling journey, and takes part in a fun coaching word association segment. The conversation wraps up with stories about Ben Askren's impact on the sport, thoughts on Ben competing at Real American Freestyle, and answers to a variety of fan-submitted questions.TIMESTAMPS:0:00 - Start of Show01:00 - What MM Has Been Up To06:00 - Decision Not to Compete This Circuit09:00 - Getting the Itch Again13:00 - The Training Focus20:00 - The Non-Bonus Win over Hepner26:25 - God-Shaped Hole in Our Hearts33:45 - The Penn State Family40:45 - Winning the Hodge45:35 - Family & Role of Parents55:25 - Coaching Word Association58:00 - Impact of Ben Askren01:02:10 - Ben Competing at RAF01:04:10 - Fan QuestionsMM ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/mitchell_mesenbrink/MM ON X: https://x.com/Mitch_MesBe sure to SUBSCRIBE to the podcast. Today we're sharing something special that was previously only available to The Breaker community on the MBB Substack page. We were joined by Elizabeth Gilbert—celebrated author of Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic—to discuss her newest book that explores a rarely-addressed topic: the dangerous impacts of co-dependency and sex and love addiction. We discussed how her path took her from the stability of a suburban marriage into a profound, life-altering romance with her best friend-turned-lover, Rayya Elias. And we explore the “untouchable darkness” that followed, where a relationship with a relapsing addict revealed Elizabeth's own deepest addiction and codependency. Elizabeth describes her descent into unmanageability, contemplating both murder and suicide—her only perceived options out of the pain—before experiencing a spiritual revelation and hearing the voice of what she now knows is her Higher Power. While we often investigate the life experiences that shape our behavior, Elizabeth asserts that understanding “why” we suffer is rarely enough to heal us. Many of us attempt to fill a persistent internal darkness with food, drugs, sex, work, or porn, but ultimately, that “God-shaped hole” is only filled through a direct relationship with a power greater than ourselves. Our live also covers: - Visions and the Voice of God: The specific spiritual revelations and “visits from beyond” that have directed Elizabeth's writing career and her path to love. - The Dissolution of Fear: A look at the numerous spiritual revelations that led her to be rid of fear, anger, and shame. - Discovery vs. Recovery: Why understanding the “why” of our behavior isn't enough to change it. Elizabeth reminds us that our peace cannot be held hostage by the expression on another person's face. We invite you to watch this session as we explore the “invisible line” between love and pathology and find our way back to ourselves. In this thought-provoking episode, we explore a surprising and increasingly discussed idea: **going to church even if you don't believe**. Using a recent article by **Esther Walker** published in **The Times** on March 11, 2026 as a backdrop, we dive into the cultural conversation around faith, tradition, and why people still attend church even when belief feels uncertain. Why do some people continue to participate in church services despite doubts? Is there value in the rhythms, community, and practices of organized religion—even when personal faith is still developing? In this episode, we explore the **pros and cons of legalism in organized religion**, discussing how structure, tradition, and discipline can sometimes feel restrictive, yet can also provide a framework that keeps people connected to spiritual truth. We also reflect on the timeless concept often described as the **“God-shaped hole”** in the human heart—the idea that every person has a deep spiritual need for God. If that space isn't filled by Him, we naturally try to fill it with other things: success, identity, politics, relationships, or countless modern “gods.” Our conversation explores how this longing points to a deeper reality: humans are wired for relationship with their Creator.Throughout the discussion, we encourage **faithful attendance at church**, whatever your starting point may be—even if belief feels fragile or distant. Why? Because Scripture reminds us that faith often grows through exposure to God's Word. As we see in **Epistle to the Romans 10:17**, *“faith comes by hearing.”* Simply sitting under the teaching of Scripture, hearing the gospel, and participating in the life of the church can plant seeds that bear fruit in time.We also talk about the danger of faith becoming nothing more than **childhood recitations or cultural habits**. Many people remember prayers, hymns, or Bible stories from childhood, but never move beyond familiarity into **a real, personal relationship with God**. This episode invites listeners to revisit those memories and ask deeper questions: What do these truths really mean? What would it look like to know God personally rather than simply knowing about Him?Finally, we reflect on the cultural moment we're living in—one where identifying as Christian can sometimes lead to labels or assumptions, including being categorized politically. Instead of reacting defensively, we discuss how Christians are called to **bear witness to the world through the character of God Himself**: a Father full of love, compassion, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. In this episode, we explore:* Why some people attend church even without strong belief* The benefits and pitfalls of legalism in organized religion* The idea of the “God-shaped hole” and humanity's search for meaning* Why regularly hearing God's Word can nurture faith over time* Moving from childhood familiarity with faith to a living relationship with God* How Christians can reflect God's love and grace in a culture that often misunderstands faithWhether you're curious about Christianity, returning to church after years away, wrestling with doubt, or simply thinking about the role of faith in modern life, this conversation offers thoughtful perspective and encouragement.**Tune in as we discuss why showing up might matter more than you think—and how hearing God's Word can slowly transform hearts over time.**
Unlearning Religion - God-Shaped Hole There is a unique relationship between the gospel and what we have, what we want, what we need, and what we think we need. Let’s face it, money can make people do weird things. What we do with money and what it does to us can be life-giving or life-robbing. When we allow the gospel to define our material desires we then view ourselves as infinitely loved, infinitely treasured, and infinitely secure.
Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind - The Julian Jaynes Society Podcast
The God-Shaped Hole in Your Mind: Julian Jaynes's Groundbreaking Ideas on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind Explained in Just 16 MinutesWhat if human consciousness, as we know it, is a recent invention? In this fast-paced 16-minute presentation, we explore the revolutionary theory of psychologist Julian Jaynes — a mind-bending journey into the origins of thought, the voices of ancient gods, and the breakdown of the “bicameral mind.” Whether you're new to Jaynes's work or revisiting his ideas with fresh eyes, you'll leave with a new perspective on what it means to be conscious — and why that might not be as timeless as we think.Produced by Marcel Kuijsten.Learn more about Julian Jaynes's theory or become a member by visiting the Julian Jaynes Society at https://www.julianjaynes.org.Read our latest book, "Conversations on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind":https://www.julianjaynes.org/book/conversations-on-consciousness-and-the-bicameral-mind/

There is a God-shaped hole in me. A narcissism entrancement holds me, but I can break the spell when I invite Jesus into the void. There once was an Australian sitcom that I used to watch. It was called Kath and Kim. The two central characters were Kath, the mother, and her daughter Kim. In the series, there was a line repeatedly said from mother to daughter. Look at me Look at me Look at moi (‘me', but in a deepening lengthy tone) Kath would say these words to get her daughter's attention. In this episode of the "On Meaning" podcast, Tamir Dortal hosts world-renowned historian and public intellectual Professor Niall Ferguson for a fascinating conversation about the role of religion in contemporary society.Professor Ferguson, known for his nuanced perspectives on history and current affairs, delves into his personal journey from atheism to Christianity, explaining the reasons behind this significant shift in belief. He discusses the challenges of raising a family and navigating morality without a religious framework, emphasizing the importance of religious education for cultural understanding and ethical development. He further explores the historical context of secularization, contrasting the West's trajectory with the more turbulent experiences of communist regimes. The discussion then takes a surprising turn as Professor Ferguson analyzes the emergence of "wokeism" as a new form of pseudo-religion, drawing parallels with historical examples of political ideologies filling the void left by traditional faith. He also examines the complexities of inter-civilizational dialogue in a globalized world, advocating for greater understanding and engagement between different cultural traditions. What do you picture in your mind when we ask you what the God shaped hole in your heart looks like? Are we dealing with a two-dimensional jigsaw puzzle piece? Or a three-dimensional hole like a punctured ball? Or are we talking about the hole in the top of every glass? (Or the hole in every drinking straw?) We're here to grapple with this concept that is commonly taught in Christianity.Mentioned in the episode: You Have Permission Podcast Pensèes by Blaise Pascal 108. Many have had someone tell them, or grew up hearing, that we all have a “God-shaped hole” in our souls or hearts, and that only faith in (or a “personal relationship with”) Jesus can fill it. What do they mean by this? Where does this idea come from? And what are the consequences, intentional or not, of this way of understanding the human person and the Christian faith? Dan tackles these questions in this week's episode Linktree: https://linktr.ee/StraightWhiteJC Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 For access to the full Orange Wave series, click here: https://irreverent.supportingcast.fm/products/the-orange-wave-a-history-of-the-religious-right-since-1960 To Donate: Venmo: @straightwhitejc https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/straightwhiteamericanjesus SWAJ Apparel is here! https://straight-white-american-jesus.creator-spring.com/listing/not-today-uncle-ron Learn more about your ad choices.
