314: The UK (Hearts) the NFL - With Ben Isaacs

Domestically, American football has never been more popular (or prosperous) than it is today - yet questions continue to circle among the ownership class of the NFL as to how the pro game can continue to grow outside the confines of its current 32-team franchise structure.   While the feasibility of pursuing more club expansion within the US is hotly debated, there is no denying that the true future of the league's fortunes rests on its ability to more reliably tap into the massive fan fervor for pro pigskin building in international markets. Ben Issacs ("The American Football Revolution: How Britain Fell in Love with the NFL") makes the case that the UK might be one of the most logical regions to put on the league's shortlist - buttressed by a surprisingly strong history of interest in and support for the game - especially in London, where nearly three dozen regular season games have been played since 2007. In fact, the British Isles have been fascinated with American football for much longer than that - and Isaacs takes us through some of the evidence, including: the NFL's American Bowl pre-season exhibition series during the 1980s; the post-season 1984 USFL Wembley Stadium matchup between the champion Philadelphia Stars and the Burt Reynolds/Tim Bassett-owned Tampa Bay Bandits (for the long-forgotten "Jetsave Challenge Cup"); the ill-fated NFL-sponsored World League of American Football (with the 1991 World Bowl champion London Monarchs); and the reconstituted NFL Europe/Europa and its still-revered Scottish Claymores.   + + +     BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The American Football Revolution: How Britain Fell in Love with the NFL (2023; US pre-order): https://amzn.to/3seLF9D   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

In this episode, Jeff and Barton discuss how he overcame so many obstacles to make the NFL and why he wrote the book "Tackle Life Head On".  Through his stories of never giving up on his dream of becoming a professional football player, we learn how his mindset helped him overcome asthma, foot issues, and more to make it to the NFL.  In the second part of the interview, Jeff talks about how the nineteen concussions over his professional career took their toll on his brain and has left him disabled.  Jeffrey Matthew Ogden (born February 22, 1975) is a former American football wide receiver, kickoff and punt returner in the NFL  for the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins,  and Baltimore Ravens. He played college football at Eastern Washington University.  Dallas CowboysJeff Ogden  was signed as an un-drafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys after the 1998 NFL Draft.  He had some notable preseason performances, but never developed into a consistent wide receiver. In the regular season, he usually was the team's fifth receiver and played mostly on special teams, making 10 tackles (tied for sixth on the team). In 1999, he returned 12 kickoffs for a 21-yard average and made five special teams tackles. In 2000, he was allocated to the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe,  where he ranked fifth in the league with 44 receptions for 635 yards, despite missing the last two games with a sprained right foot. He also had 7 touchdowns, while helping the team finish with the league's best record (7-3) and winning World Bowl 2000.  He returned to the Cowboys with a sprained foot and later injured the left one, which caused him to miss most of training camp.  On August 22, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh round draft choice, which the team later used to select Peter Hunter.  Miami Dolphins[In 2000, he reunited with offensive coordinator Chan Galley, who was his head coach with the Dallas Cowboys and also found a niche as a returner. Against the Green Bay Packers, he returned a punt for an 81-yard touchdown, the third-longest punt return in team history.  He also finished the season with a league leading and franchise single-season record 17-yard punt return average.  In 2001, his 11.8-yard punt return average ranked eighth in the NFL.He left as the Dolphins' all-time team leader in punt return average (13.7-yard) and third all-time in punt return yards (700 yards).Baltimore RavensOn September 10, 2002, he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens to play on special teams. He appeared in 3 games and was declared inactive in 10, while sharing punt return duties. He wasn't re-signed at the end of the season.Ogden's most productive season as a wide receiver was in 1999, when he caught 12 passes for 144 yards in 10 games. He caught his only touchdown reception in 2001. He ended his professional career playing in 67 games, registering 28 receptions for 304 yards and one touchdown.Jeff Ogden's new book: Tackle Life Head On can be found on Amazon or by going to http://www.LiveHeadOn.comConnect with Jeff Ogden on Instagram @Jeffrey_ogden212JOIN BARTON'S Premium membership:  donate $3 / month or become get coached by Barton for $150 / month (limited to first 10 applicants).  https://themindsetforge.supercast.comConnect with Barton on Instagram @bartonguybryanBarton's Podcast Website is:  https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/For more info on Joining the Mindset Forge Premium membership for $3 / month (Donors Level) or $150 / month: https://themindsetforge.supercast.com

By popular request, we begin our exploration of the enigmatic 1990s international experiment known (initially) as the World League of American Football with a deep dive into its first championship team – the London Monarchs – with author Alex Cassidy (American Football's Forgotten Kings: The Rise and Fall of the London Monarchs). Resurrected from an idea originated (but never launched) by the NFL in 1974 called the “International Football League,” the WLAF was formed in 1989 as both a spring developmental circuit as well as an operational test bed for full-fledged expansion of American football into markets outside the United States. Eventually comprised exclusively of European teams by 1995 (later under the banners “NFL Europe” from [1998-2006] and “NFL Europa” [2007]), the first two seasons of the WLAF also featured a Canadian franchise (the Montreal Machine) as well as six in the US – most of which (Orlando, Birmingham, Sacramento, San Antonio, Raleigh-Durham [1991], and Columbus, OH [1992]) were historically forlorn pro markets. The Monarchs played their first two seasons at the original/famed Wembley Stadium and became an immediate sensation in London, averaging over 40,000 fans per game – including a league-record-setting 61,108 for the WLAF’s inaugural World Bowl 21-0 championship over the Barcelona Dragons on June 9, 1991.  Though the team never achieved the level of success or stability in the years that followed (the league’s return in 1995 began a peripatetic journey of future home stadiums across London, as well as Bristol and Manchester), the Monarchs boasted a memorable array of characters that – like other WLAF/NFLE teams – consisted of veteran NFL journeymen and promising young developmental talent from both the US and the Continent, including: Kicker Phil Alexander, the league's 1991 points leader (and now Managing Director of Crystal Palace); RB Victor Ebubedike, the first European native to score a touchdown (vs. the Orlando Thunder, 4/6/91): Journeyman NFL QB Stan Gelbaugh, 1991’s WLAF Offensive Player of the Year; and Former Chicago Bears Super Bowl-winning defensive lineman William “Refrigerator” Perry. World Football League researcher extraordinaire Mark Speck (And a Dollar Short: The Empty Promises, Broken Dreams, and Somewhat-Less-Than-Comic Misadventures of the 1974 Florida Blazers) returns to the podcast to discuss the incredible story of Orlando’s first professional sports franchise – and the crazy challenger football league that hastened both its creation and demise. The Florida Blazers actually originated in late 1973 as the Washington Ambassadors, one of the originally-envisioned charter WFL teams to begin play the next summer.  From the outset, franchise owner/oceanographic engineer Joseph Wheeler had difficulties raising financing and securing a lease for DC’s RFK Stadium – and by March, had moved the team to nearby Norfolk, VA – with no better luck.     Hastened by a nervous WFL Commissioner Gary Davidson, Wheeler sold the club in May of 1974 – a mere two months before the start of the season – to an Orlando, FL syndicate led by former New England Patriots player and executive Rommie Loudd, which had just lost (to Tampa Bay) a bid to get an NFL expansion team.  Quickly setting up shop in a small and rickety Tangerine Bowl, the newly rechristened Blazers finally got their act together (at least on the field) with a surprising array of veteran (ex-Jets Bob Davis and Larry Grantham) and rookie (eventual league co-MVP Tommy Reamon) talent assembled by NFL star coach Jack Pardee – who rose to the league’s elite and ultimately to the World Bowl championship game.  Incredibly, off the field, the franchise was a financial disaster – riddled with poor attendance, non-existent marketing, inadequate financing, unpaid bills (and players) – and an owner who ultimately would up in jail for tax embezzlement and narcotics trafficking. And we’re only scratching the surface! Check out all the great World Football League garb and gear from our friends at: 503 Sports, SportsHistoryCollectibles.com, and OldSchoolShirts.com!

We had a great catch up with Scottish Claymore Quarterback Jim Ballard earlier this month. We chatted to him about his time in Scotland, his great success in World Bowl 96, ask what he's up to now and also get his thoughts on the rookie QBs in the NFL so far this season. We also discuss the importance of a development league and look ahead to what the Alliance of America set up might offer from February.  As Cameron is in London this week, we'll keep our week 7 and 8 awards for episode 25, so keep them coming via Twitter.  Make sure you follow us on twitter - @ScotlandNFL or Facebook - www.facebook.com/ScotlandNFL/ and share your thoughts on this episode.

We conclude our conversation with WFL researcher Mark Speck (WIFFLE: The Wild, Zany and Sometimes Hilariously True Story of the World Football League; World Football League Encyclopedia; . . .And a Dollar Short: The Empty Promises, Broken Dreams, and Somewhat-Less-Than-Comic Misadventures of the 1974 Florida Blazers), as we find the league limping its way through an inaugural 1974 campaign that featured two mid-season franchise relocations (Houston to Shreveport, and New York to Charlotte), two outright team collapses (Detroit and Jacksonville), dwindling attendance and TV ratings, the ousting of league founder/commissioner Gary Davidson – and a championship “World Bowl” between two cash-strapped finalists (Birmingham and Florida) that was only allowed to take place after the IRS agreed to accept the game’s gate receipts as payment for an overdue tax bill. A return for an improbable second season in 1975 was made possible only by dissolving the league entirely and legally reconstituting into a second incarnation (inexplicably with the same name), under the stricture of resort developer/Hawaiians owner Chris Hemmeter’s eponymous operating plan that called for franchise deposit fees, limited budgets and player revenue-sharing based on business success.  But with no renewed national TV contract (TVS declined the option after Joe Namath spurned the Chicago Winds’ lucrative offer to jump), a now-highly suspicious fan base, and far less press coverage than the previous year’s spectacle, the “new” World Football League fared even worse – folding entirely and for good on October 22, 1975 – after just 13 weeks of play. Under the coaching of Rod Rutherford in 2013, first team All-PSAC wide receiver Terrill Barnes was the first Crimson Hawk to go over 1,000 yards since Carmelo Ocasio in 2002. Barnes finished the season with 63 receptions, rushing for 1,014 yards and 8 touchdowns. Barnes went over 150 yards in three games and had a receiving touchdown in eight of eleven games.   In 2012, Rutherford was part of a coaching staff that led the Hawks to a 12-2 record and a NCAA playoff appearance.  Prior to IUP, Rutherford spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as a graduate assistant at Pitt, coaching the linebackers and wide receivers. TOPICS: Segment #1: "Robert Gallery Quits On The Raiders" Free agent Robert Gallery was "asking too much" to resign with the Raiders according to their official media statement. So the Raiders former first round pick will not be returning to the team in 2011. Raider Greg tells the story and gives his opinion. Segment #2: "Chuck Bresnahan is the Raiders Defensive Coordinator" Originally labeled simply as "Defensive Coach" after his hiring several weeks ago, the Raiders have officially announced that Chuck Bresnahan will be the Raiders Defensive Coordinator. Raider Greg predicted it all along, and so did most other people, and Greg tells the story. Segment #3: "Interview with Gene Taylor, Ex-NFL Wide Receiver and now Firefighter Co-worker with Raider Greg" Gene sat down and talked with Greg while they were on duty at the fire station on various topics concerning the NFL....least of which was the threat of an NFL Lockout. Gene had just started his rookie year in the NFL in 1987 when the players went out on strike, so he gives Greg his unique perspective on this topic. He also tells us all about his career which included playing for the New England Patriots, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Canadian Football League as well as the "World League" in Europe. Gene also has some Raider connections. Besides growing up in Oakland, one of Gene's college team-mates at Fresno State was none other than Raiders running backs coach Kelly Skipper. Gene also tells a story of how he crossed paths with Hue Jackson while playing in the World League. Hue was coaching for the London Monarchs, Gene played for the Barcelona Dragons, and they faced off against one another in the "World Bowl". Gene gives his personal insight on what it's like to play in the NFL, and I think you'll really enjoy this interview. This will be Part One of a two parts. Part Two of the interview will be on our next podcast, Show 305. You won't want to miss it. Segment #4: The Boneline (our toll-free voicemail line) 1-800-620-7181 Here are this week's callers: 01.
