Alena Pitts is a 16-year-old actress, author and vocalist. The Kendrick Brothers’ movie, War Room, marked Alena’s professional acting debut, with Alena being cast in the major supporting role as Danielle Jordan. The movie was a box-office hit in 2015, becoming the 6 highest grossing Christian film in box office history. The film immediately launched Alena headfirst into the spotlight at the age of 11. Shortly after, Alena started on a new journey and co-authored a three-book fictional series aptly titled, Lena In The Spotlight (Zonderkids, 2017). The books are written with her mother, Wynter Pitts, author and founder of For Girls Like You Ministries. Though having experienced unbelievable success, Alena’s journey has not come without loss. She tragically and unexpectedly lost her mother on July 24 , 2018. Though the pain has left her and her family heartbroken, they are not without hope and are using Wynter’s passing from death to life as an opportunity to share the hope found in Jesus Christ. Alena has found that sharing her story in song and writing has brought her the most healing. Alena remains very grounded and values her relationship with Jesus Christ as her highest priority, followed by her commitment to her family including three sisters, Kaitlyn (13) and twins Camryn and Olivia (11). She and her family reside in Franklin, Tennessee. We chatted about: Her passion for acting (and how this developed at a very young age) Her starring role in the film War Room What God taught her about prayer through the experience of being a part of War Room Advice for another girl with similar dreams of creating, acting or writing Balancing public ministry with the normal life of a teenager Her running career (of course we had to talk shop about this!)

Then, my friend Jonathan Pitts is joining us to talk about his story of faith. He’s the executive pastor of Church of the City here in Nashville, and I know you’re going to be unbelievably encouraged by his story. Finally, we’ll spend some time journaling through what it looks like to have peace that passes all understanding. Let’s go! Do This When You Feel Hopeless We’ve all had disappointments in our lives. I’ve had my heart broken in many different ways. I’ve been in the hospital with my 3-year-old as he was hooked up to all these monitors to see if he was going to be okay. And he was. But at that moment I was terrified. I've lost family members. I've had family members and close friends go through tragedies in their life. I’ve also gone through seasons of darkness and wilderness where I felt like God didn't see me and didn't remember me and wondered if He was mad at me. Have you felt like that? Have you gone through disappointments or heartbreaks or tragedies? The kind where all you can think in those moments (even if you’ve had a lifetime of faith) is, God, where are you? Do you even see me? Do you even hear me? Do you know what I'm going through? We look to our heartbreak and draw conclusions about the character of God. But when you look at Scripture, God never said it would be easy. There’s example after example of disappointment, trials, valleys, temptations and seasons of darkness. It’s full of people feeling lost and scared and forgotten. It's full of those moments when we feel like He doesn't see us, or that He's left us or abandoned us. Or maybe it’s that He's just not good. But you know what? Scripture also reminds us that even though we’ll go through those seasons, God is with us. Even though we’ll go through darkness, God is good. And even though we’ll go through seasons where we’re full of fear and anxiety of the unknown and experience heartbreak, disappointment and tragedy, He sees us, He's with us, and He’s still good. How to Overcome Loss with Jonathan Pitts I’m so excited to be sitting down with Jonathan Pitts today. He’s the executive pastor of Church of the City in Nashville, co-author of Emptied: Experiencing the Fullness of a Poured-Out Marriage, and President of For Girls Like You. Jonathan had to learn how to trust God after losing his wife Wynter Pitts. His story of faith despite the hardest circumstances really moved me, and I know it will move you too. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: Centering yourself on the present—especially when your heart is broken Choosing a posture of gratitude, even in hard times Knowing who you are and whose you are Having hope despite life’s disappointments Believing that God works all things out for good Remember This When Life Is Hard . . . “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33 (NIV) There are so many things in life that we want but can’t necessarily have. We can’t have control or every desire fulfilled. We can’t always have our plans work out exactly as we want them to. Things aren’t always going to be easy. But what Jesus reminds us again and again is that we can have peace that passes all understanding despite our circumstances, our heartbreak and our tragedy. Remember: This world is not our home. We will have trouble, but God is still good—He is with us and He is for us. Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you process what it means to have faith—even in your heartbreak. Think back on some past times when you’ve been disappointed and remember where God showed up. Write down specific examples of how God carried you during those difficult times. How did you change as a result of that suffering, tragedy, disappointment or heartbreak? What changed in you? How did going through that actually strengthen your faith? Where do you need God to show up right now?

Four hours later, she died in his arms. In an incredible display of courage and faith, Jonathan shares about his darkest moments of heartbreak, the true definition of love, how marrying for happiness is a mistake, and on a lighter note, the LEAST romantic thing you can say to your fiancé. My cousin Wynter, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly a year ago. I can't believe that it's been a whole year. Time passes so quickly if we are not intentional about slowing it down. So when the anniversary of her death rolled around yesterday, I stopped time. I spent the day listening to Wynter's voice from [...]
We are still in the summer series of re-releases of parenting episodes. This week marks the anniversary of my friend Wynter Pitts passing. Wynter meant so much to me. She was a strong, beautiful, creative woman who not only encouraged me in my work but also in motherhood. I am so thankful to have known her. This episode was my first conversation with Wynter where we talked about so many aspects of motherhood. We talk about how God changed her perspective on being a mom, how to know when your child is ready for social media and how to foster the relationship between your daughters. And if you want to hear more with Wynter, she and her husband Jonathan joined me on Episode 97 where they talk about raising their kids. Connect with Sarah: Website // Instagram

#69: Jonathan Pitts: How to Experience a Poured-Out Marriage Shortly after Jonathan and Wynter Pitts celebrated fifteen years of marriage and in the midst a move from the Dallas area to Nashville, TN, Wynter's heart failed. She left Jonathan and their four daughters bewildered and heartbroken, but also hopeful. Even though we do talk about marriage in this episode, you will be encouraged whether or not you are married. It's a special day here on the podcast as we welcome Jonathan Pitts- pastor, author, and husband to my friend, the late Wynter Pitts. The very day she passed away, Jonathan and Wynter turned in a book on marriage called Emptied. I thought talking about this book, and Wynter, and Jonathan's transition to Nashville, would be great at the end of TSF Couples 2019. Hope you'll enjoy this very moving and honest conversation with Jonathan. (We love you, Wynter. You are missed here.) https://twitter.com/PittsTimes6 https://forgirlslikeyou.com . . . . . http://anniefdowns.com #thatsoundsfunpodcast ... join in the conversation wherever hashtags are welcome. :)
My guest for The Happy Hour # 232 is Jonathan Pitts. Jonathan is the Executive Pastor at Church of the City and husband to my friend Wynter Pitts, who God called home July 24, 2018. Jonathan and Wynter have four daughters, and on the show today I had the honor to talk with Jonathan about what life has looked like since her passing. Jonathan starts off sharing how the ministry Wynter started, For Girls Like You, is continuing and growing. We then get to hear so many incredible stories of how God has shown Jonathan and his family that He's always been with them as they've walked this road. He talks about learning how God is with us in the present, and because of this truth it is possible to grieve and experience joy in the same space. My faith was so encouraged listening to Jonathan speak about hope amidst suffering. I was reminded that even when there is pain now, it is not wasted. God can use all things for His good and His glory, and there is joy coming in the end because of the cross. Friends, I loved Wynter and am so honored to get to share Wynter's life. Andrea J. Evans loves Jesus with all her heart. She is the wife of Sean Evans and the mom of three children or three “wonderfuls” as she calls them. They are 14, 12, and 10 years old. Let’s just say her life is pretty full with a teenage boy and two tween girls. She considers her children as one of her greatest gifts from the Lord. Andrea has been married to Sean for almost twenty years. Andrea loves to write poetry and has been published in two books, Life Happens But You Can Finish by Dr. Draper and Dr. Love-Manning and God’s Girl by Wynter Pitts. Andrea loves to encourage other women to live to their fullest potential. She values relationships with other women and works hard to cultivate them. She and Sean also have served together in marriage ministry for the past 15 years. She is an east coast girl who has been planted in the DFW area. Andrea says, “She’s not sure what God is up to, but she knows it has to be something big.”
Alena Pitts is a 14-year-old actress, author and vocalist. The Kendrick Brothers’ WAR ROOM marked Alena’s professional acting debut, with Alena being cast in the major supporting role as Danielle Jordan. The movie was a box-office hit in 2015, becoming the 6th highest grossing Christian film in box office history. The film immediately launched Alena headfirst into the spotlight at the age of 11. Shortly after, Alena started on a new journey and co-authored a three-book fictional series aptly titled, Lena In The Spotlight (Zonderkids, 2017). The books are written with her mother, Wynter Pitts, author and founder of For Girls Like You Magazine. Though having experienced unbelievable success, Alena’s journey has not come without loss. She tragically and unexpectedly lost her mother on July 24th 2018. Though the pain has left her and her family heartbroken, they are not without hope and are using Wynter’s passing from death to life as an opportunity to share the hope found in Jesus Christ. Alena has found that sharing her story in song and writing has brought her the most healing. Alena remains very grounded and values her relationship with Jesus Christ as her highest priority, followed by her commitment to her family including three sisters, Kaitlyn (12) and twins Camryn and Olivia (9). She and her family reside in Franklin, TN.
“The opposite of love is not hatred, but indifference.” Elie Weisel If you’ve been here for a while, know that we don’t usually interview men on this show (Quick shout out to past guest guys like Joel Smallbone and Van Moody). Most of our guests are female because one of our main goals is to highlight positive role models for girls and that means, most of the time, those role models are women. But we’re switching things up for today’s show, and I’ll tell you right now -- this one’s gonna be a tough and emotional one for me. When Brent and I got started in ministry and trying to impact girls, come alongside and support them to walk in their God-given identities, we started to reach out to a lot of different people mostly because we were entering uncharted territory for us. We had both spent time working in the professional world. So we started to branch out and build relationships with lots of people all over the place – church leaders, people in the book publishing and media industries and we found so many amazing people who helped us, supported us and as you know even now the circle of folks who have dedicated their lives to helping girls follow Jesus, be who God made them to be, that circle is a small one but we did find one couple we immediately gravitated to and became friends with for a lot of reasons – Jonathan and Wynter Pitts. And while I wish Wynter could be here with us (Be sure to go back and listen to her episode – it’s #71), I’m so excited to have Jonathan here for this interview because I know you’re going to be blessed by this conversation. Father to four girls, Alena, Kaity, Camryn and Olivia, Jonathan’s heart for God and his girls is so inspirational. To me, he is a modern hero of faith whose friendship has meant so much to our family. Don’t miss today’s episode. It’s gonna bless you to hear all about how the Pitts family is adjusting to life in Tennessee after moving there from Texas. Any Friday Night Lights fans out there? #texasforever He also shares a lot about what the Lord is showing him in this season and all about the book he and Wynter wrote together (JP sent in the final manuscript for #Emptiedbook the day Wynter passed away). He’s sharing details and insights for how to approach marriage with intentionality, sacrificial love, and the grace that covers it when we get it wrong. Other questions from today’s episode include: Do you feel like the approach to marriage that you and Wynter took relieved any pressure of you feeling like all the other married people were doing it better? What has it meant to you to carry Wynter’s legacy forward – not just in your shared approach to marriage – but the impact she had in her ministry for girls all over the world? What’s up next for you and the girls and how can we be praying for you? All our married, soon-to-be-married, and single people looking to marry one day, be sure to get over to emptiedbook.com watch the video and download the F R E E devotional. You will NOT regret it!

Prior to pastoring, Jonathan was Executive Director at The Urban Alternative, the national ministry of Dr. Tony Evans in Dallas, TX. Jonathan resides in Nashville, TN with his four daughters. In this special episode, we pause to remember and honor Jonathan's wife, Wynter Pitts, that went home to Jesus far too soon. Wynter brought so much to the world with her ministry and magazine, For Girls Like You. We want to learn from her incredible life and legacy as a mom, mentor, wife and follower of Christ.
"Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?" Proverbs 8:1 When I slow down and consider all of the people I've met since we began this ministry/company, there are a few special people whose voices ring with genuine wisdom and the incomparable truth found in God's Word. They are the voices that I was looking for as a mama. Above the roar of culture, they are the voices our girls need to hear. They are powerful weapons in the fight for our girls. My dear friend Wynter Pitts had a voice like that, and she used it to empower parents to lead their daughters to Christ and encourage girls to live with the gospel at the center of everything. When she suddenly passed away less than two weeks ago, the girl ministry community, as well as my own home and family, were rocked. But what began in sadness and confusion ended with incredible peace and a rallying by the body of Christ unlike any that I have ever seen. On behalf of the team at Bible Belles, it is my honor to re-release the interview I did with Wynter a few months ago. It's title, "She Is Yours," carries with it special meaning for me today, as I think about every girl who was and will be affected by Wynter's words and life, and as I think about my sweet friend who is now safe in the arms of Jesus, the One to whom she belongs. Lord, she is Yours. We celebrate her today, and we carry her legacy into tomorrow.

Jonathan and Wynter Pitts have four beautiful girls. At one point, three of them were in diapers at the same time. As you can imagine, Wynter was overwhelmed. But in the middle of the exhaustion and discontentment, she found purpose and contentment. During this time, the Lord revealed to her a need he wanted her to fill for girls in today’s culture. Today, she leads a ministry called For Girls Like You, a magazine for girls that unravels the heart of God for them. Her passion for raising girls who find their identity in Christ is contagious. In this episode, Wynter, along with her husband Jonathan, who serves as Executive Director for the Urban Alternative (the ministry of Dr. Tony Evans), describe practical ways they shepherd the hearts of their girls. Fellow dads, you also want to listen to what Jonathan has to share. The conversation in this episode is so rich and applicable to each of us, but to dads especially, Jonathan will encourage you. Here are a few highlights from this episode: How to see the art of parenting as Kingdom work What it means to invite our kids into our world How to strive for presence, not perfection Why we need to give our kids more credit The power of turning things outward for our kids The difference between good intentions and intentionality You cannot listen to Jonathan + Wynter without one of their many insights sticking on you. Wynter is the founder of For Girls Like You Magazine and the author of several amazing resources that are very popular in the Weidemann household - For Girls Like You, You're God's Girl Devotionals For Tweens and She is Yours- Trusting God as You Raise the Girl He Gave You. Jonathan and Wynter Pitts join me for Episode 97. I was so happy to invite Wynter back on the show and loved getting a chance to chat with her husband, too. Wynter is the Founder of For Girls Like You and the author of several tween books. Jonathan is the executive director of The Urban Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans. They recently wrote a book called She Is Yours—Trusting God as You Raise the Girl He Gave You.You see, they have four daughters. So their house is loud, messy, busy and fun. They fully understand what many of us are walking through as we raise our daugthers. We waste no time and dive right in to the hard stuff. We talk about what to do if we have a hard time viewing our kids as gifts from the Lord. We talk about the power of prayer when it comes to raising our kids. And we talk about how to help them develop their relationship with God, with their parents and with the world around them. Takeaways From Our Conversation: I think one of my favorite parts of the conversation about influence. I know this is true for me that so often we worry about the influence that others will have on our kids. We wonder if we should change schools or churches or sport teams. Scott and I just had a conversation about this very thing last week—fearful that one of ours would succumb to peer pressure as a teenager. But Wynter said to think more about what God can do through her—how she can impact and influence the world rather than worrying out how the world may influence her. This requires a shift in perspective. Notice the ways that your child has a positive influence on another. Give your child opportunities to be a positive influence on others and opportunities to impact the world around them. That is a proactive approach rather than a reactive approach to influence. Parenting is about investing a lot of hard work. Children are the types of gifts that require assembly; they aren't batteries included type of gifts. Ask God to help you see them as a gift. Its hard to see beauty when we are distracted by other things. We often view our kids as distractions rather than gifts. Relationship always requires more than anything else does. So much of it is building into what you are already doing. Look around at what you already have in place and work from there. If we want our kids to love others then we need to give them opportunities to flex those muscles. My best first play is to give her back to the Lord. What did you enjoy about this episode? What was your takeaway. Let's continue the conversation on Instagram or Twitter or you can send me an email here. Thank you for following along life with me. I love being apart of your day. And as always, I hope this show helps you survive a little easier.

Wynter Pitts joins me for Episode 57. She is the founder of For Girls Like You which is a resource ministry to tween girls and their parents. She produces some really amazing resources and can't wait for my oldest girl to get them. Since Wynter is a mom of 4 girls, we have a conversation about motherhood. We talk about how God changed her perspective on being a mom, how to know when your child is ready for social media and how to foster the relationship between your daughters. I really, really enjoyed my time with her and I know you will, too. So pull up a chair to my kitchen table and join the conversation. I hope you enjoyed my conversation with Wynter. I loved every bit of it. I especially loved hearing that it is possible for God to change your perspective about your children. I am truly honest when I say that motherhood isn't my favorite role. Doesn't mean I don't love my children, but it's just difficult. Ever since my conversation with Wynter, I have been asking God to give me the desires of my heart--to make my desires His desires towards my children. She said, "God's word will react in our lives." Praying for God to react in my heart. Check out the show notes at SurvivingSarah.com for links to all of Wynter's resources. You'll find custom amazon links so if you choose to purchase the books then the show will get a small kickback. In fact, if you type in SurvivingSarah.com/amazon then anything you purchase whether it is laundry detergent, cat liter or pull ups, then Surviving Sarah will get a small portion of your purchase. What part of our conversation struck you? Let's not let the conversation end here. Come find me @sarahwbragg on Instagram or Twitter or SurvivingSarahPodcast on Facebook. Thank you again for listening. And as always, I hope that this show helps you survive a little easier.
Our interview with mother and writer Wynter Pitts delighted us with surprises. With four girls at home Wynter unknowingly founded a magazine for tween girls. By unknowingly, we mean she didn't set out to make a magazine, she simply was a mom wanting to create something for her daughters. Appropriately named, For Girls Like You, organically developed into a quarterly magazine and is now a project her entire family works on together. But the family's creative flare is not isolated to the written word. Wynter's eldest daughter Alena acted alongside Priscilla Shirer in the box office hit War Room. In this podcast episode we hear what the movie taping process was like, how Alena trained for the double dutch stunts and how a mother's understanding of God's use of her children was broadened. Wynter's interview inspired us to broaden our thinking about how we could be world changers WITH our children right where we are. God's plans for Wynter's family are unique and suited just perfectly for who they are. What next step might you take with your family to walk through a door that God has opened?

Mud Stories with Jacque Watkins - Messy moments worked for our good
Wynter Pitts shares how she struggled to let go of selfishness, learned how to face her trust issues, opened herself to vulnerability, and in the end, how she relinquished control to God. Wynter has a ministry to tween girls called For Girls Like You, and has just released her first book entitled, For Girls Like You: A Devotional For Tweens.
Tissue alert! This one was incredibly special to me - a tearful and honest check in with Jonathan and Peta Pitts during a deeply painful season of their lives.Although, those in the midst of grief will absolutely resonate - I do believe this episode is for every single one of us. Somewhere in our stories, we endure deep loss and are left standing with many questions for God. This week of Thanksgiving can be really hard for many families and I pray this message touches you in a profound way. We talk about Joanthan's loss of his late wife Wynter Pitts, his new marriage to the amazing Peta Pitts, the often unseen role as a step-mom, their recent loss with a miscarriage and then stillborn and so much more. They are raw and honest with their pain - yet incredibly hopeful.I used to host a podcast with Wynter about raising girls. We were about 4 months into the podcast when she suddenly passed away - leaving behind her husband and 4 precious daughters. She was a treasured friend of mine. As you can imagine, this episode was emotional and very sacred to me. You'll hear a moment, when I realize that Peta is an answered prayer of mine. In those early days of Wynter's passing, I begged God over and over again to bring those girls another mother that would love them and see them like Wynter did. And He did that and so much more.My favorite part is when they share that they still choose Jesus, despite the hard questions and doubts. They share this verse that really stuck with me.“Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:68–69)Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show: The Mothering Journal - More on Peta's Writing The Mothering Journal InstagramPeta's InstagramJonathan's Instagram For Girls Like You - magazine and resourcesGod's Story Club (NEW)Jonathan's Book on Loss of WynterI Am Yours by Wynter PittsCourtney & Wynter's PodcastQuestions about death by Tony Evans“Jesus, the Light of the World”: An Advent Devotional for Kids! Our Sponsors:* Check out Factor 75 and use my code messcourtneydefeo50 for a great deal: https://www.factor75.com/Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Well, it makes perfect sense that I have a minor cryfest on this episode. In this conversation with Jennie Allen, we dive into our feelings and emotions and what to do with those. You may have many feelings (like myself) or you may lean towards suppressing your emotions. Either way, we ALL have emotions and it's important to understand how we handle those as faith-filled parents. I get super teary as we talk about our mutual friend, Wynter Pitts, and how her death really sent me for a loop. In that season, I felt grief like I never had before and wasn't sure what to do with that. Jennie is the real deal as you will see. She pauses in the midst of the interview to affirm my grief and why that loss hurt so much. My favorite part is towards the end when we discuss how often our emotions get tangled up with our kids. When they hurt, we really hurt. She gives a couple practical ways we can avoid getting pulled into their worlds so far that we risk co-dependence. Don't miss this episode!
